Actually stretch's suggestion to convert the audio track would allow you to keep using the MKV format, so as long as you're okay with all that demuxing, converting, and remuxing, it's doable.

Actually, when using xvid4psp it would only be demuxing and converting.  You would demux with mkvmerge and then xvid4psp will do everything else in one step.  You want to select Copy for copying the AVC video over.  Then you select Custom for audio conversion to AAC.  I'm not positive but I think you need AAC-LC selected.

Total newbie here saying hi (a relative graybeard who stood in line many times at the Coronet Theater in SF in 1977) and asking one of *those* questions ....

I put the file on a USB drive and plugged it into my Samsung BD-E5300 Blu-ray player. I got video (dear maker, it's beautiful) but no audio. The error message "Not supported audio codec" flashed on the screen. I imagine the player isn't smart enough or is simply incompatible. Is there anything I can do on my end to rescue the situation? I'm not too tech-savvy, but I'll try anything. Thanks muchly.

If it's like my Panasonic BD player you'll need to convert the audio to 'AAC'.  XVID4PSP is a free program that's perfect for converting audio.

Is rutracker invite only because I can't seem to find the sign up page.  The register page is just the guide lines.

You want rutracker.org, not .net or .com.  You also definitely want to use Google Chrome to auto-translate the Russian to English.

Edit:   On the register page you must make sure to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page where it says "I agree with these conditions".

I read both the LOTR books and The Hobbit twice before seeing the movie and I thought it was great. I didn't expect it to be just like the book (how could it, it's part of a lengthy trilogy based on a book aimed at kids) and length isn't a downside in my book, so I was quite satisfied with the way most of it was done.

both the LOTR books??  I thought there were three.

the Hobbit is part of a lengthy trilogy??  I thought it was a single book that was much shorter than any LOTR book.

So no one has any suggestions on a good BD player? seems this thread is dead.

FWIW I'm loving my Sony BDP-S790.

I have 2 completely different Panasonic BD players, one is 2 years old and the other 3 years old.  Both are awesome and I've never had any problems with them.  All I did was read up on several reviews and they didn't let me down.  : )

Actually, it is that easy if you have the right software. Though I'm not sure what the best /free/ software is.

EDIT: Because I can, I'm currently making a DVD5 version of Star Wars v2.5 from the AVCHD (using only English subs and the first 3 audio tracks). I'll be out of town for a couple days so I'll have to wait to seed it on Monday afternoon (US CST).

In the mean time, someone can tell me whether making it from the AVCHD /really/ would cause noticeable compression artifacts instead of me assuming things and talking out my rear end. And if that's the case, said someone should be nice and make a proper DVD5 since I don't currently have the MKV to encode from.

So, I could just burn a .vob file to a DVD, without the folder structure, and it will work?

No, I didn't say that.

VOB files with no folder structure will work on your computer, not on your DVD player. Albeit, since several individual VOB files are used, watching just one of them won't do you any good either.

I have ConvertXtoDVD, and it can use various video sources (including either a complete AVCHD or just its .m2ts file) to create proper VOB files /and/ a proper DVD folder structure that you can use to burn straight to a DVD disc.

However, as has been said, the whole conversation about how to convert this film to DVD (from any format) is moot because a DVD5 version already exists with links on tehparadox. Use that. Don't bother doing it yourself.

AVStoDVD w/ HcENC > ConvertxtoDVD, and it's free.

And pay extra for something I can't currently use. ;)

I'm not sure why you're not getting this.  The 2D copy that comes with the 3D set, which you can currently use, DOESN'T have the green tint.  The 2D-only version has green tint.

Edit:     Version with green tint (2D):

Version that includes a 2D copy that you can use and without green tint:

Gah! Is this a cock up, or more Lucas level fiddling with something that wasn't broken? This is the only new movie I even wanted to buy this year. :/

Will the 3D play back on a non 3D setup?

The 3D version comes with 2D and 3D on the same disc.  Both of them don't have the green tint.  So it's all good, get the 3D set.
