Well, that would be a good explanation, except that I've seen only 1 other "Wait for Walk" sign in the entire city...near the college campus I used to attend.
If it was the result of a lawsuit, the city would cover its butt by posting the signs at every intersection with a traffic light in the city...and they simply aren't there.

They said that if Lucas was going to do something like that, he'd have cast Denise Richards as Amidala.

Good job.

Few things struck me when I saw this:

1. If the walking man is supposed to be a "universal" sign for walk, why do you need a sign that tells you to wait for walk?

2. If a person cannot read (English), and needs the walking man, how on god's green Earth is he going to read the sign to know that he needs to wait?

3. As Chaltab suggested, the "WALK" sign isn't there. Only the walking man. How long is someone going to wait for "WALK" before they realize its not coming?

Halloween Costumes
Time
The last time I dressed up to actually go out and trick-or-treat, it was a combo.
I was Yacko.
My brother was Wacko.
My sister was Dot.

We went all the way with it too. It was actually a lot of fun.

Last year was the first year I had to work on Halloween. I was hoping for the usual Cleveland Halloween...cold and rainy. I wore shorts, a Ray Nitschke jersey, my Cheesehead, and green face paint.
I gave away little cubes of colby cheese.

I actually had one girl look at me, turn around run away laughing.

This year, I've had a lot of different ideas.
1. Dress up as an old man. Grey my hair a little, get some glasses, put wrinkles on my face, wear some different style of cloths.
2. Harpo Marx. The way I have to interact with people, the silent bit would be funny.
3. Doc Brown/Marty McFly. There is a Delorean at a lot in my neighborhood, and I think it would be cool to buy/rent the car, then drive up in it.
4. random Monty Python character. Gumby, Minister of Silly Walks, Mount Kilimanjaro expedition organizer, etc.. The problem is that none of the kids would know who I am.

That's what I did with this image.

Interesting you mention absentee ballots Bossk.

Have you heard about the trouble in Pennsylvania??
Counties which should have had their absentee ballots mailed by September 20, have not done so. In some cases, this is because of a court case attempting to get Nader on the ballot.

Now, many of these same counties are asking for an extention for absentee ballots to be sent in by. Pennsylvania law states that absentee ballots must be received by 5PM on October 29.

A judge has struck down the request for an extention. The only way to get the extention now, is an executive order by the governor.
Their governor is a democrat by the name of Ed Rendell. He has not as yet said he would sign such an order.

Now, the interesting part: Your average Pennsylvania citizen shouldn't have trouble getting their vote in on time. If no extention is granted, the people who's votes will not be counted are deployed military, in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is roughly 16,000 people from Pennsylvania.
Recent polls indicate that 73% of people in the service would vote for Bush.

So, to sum up, it looks like a Democrat is going to disenfranchise the members of our military. Regardless of whether you support the war or not, don't tell me that its right to disenfranchise our military.

And before you start telling me about "black disenfranchisement" in 2000, let me quote some numbers from the Commision on Civil Rights that conducted a 6-month investigation into Florida's election:

From The 2000 Election: Where's the Disenfranchisement?

The Commission's report asserts that the use of a convicted felons list "has a disparate impact on African Americans." "African Americans in Florida were more likely to find their names on the list than persons of other races."

Other points not in the Commission's report:

Whites were twice as likely as blacks to be placed on the list erroneously, not the other way around.

According to the Palm Beach Post, more than 6,500 ineligible felons voted, despite having their names on the 'convicted felons list. The biggest problem then was that the list ended up allowing ineligible voters to cast a ballot--not that it prevented voters from casting a ballot.

The sole piece of supporting evidence it cites a table with data on Miami-Dade County. Blacks were racially targeted, according to the report, because they account for almost two thirds of the names of the felon list but were less than one-seventh of Florida's population. It is not only meaningless but irrelevant. The vast majority of the people on the felons' list were properly listed. It was illegal for them to vote according to Florida law.

Research revealed that 239 for the 4,678 African Americans on the Miami-Dade felons' were eventually cleared to vote which represented 5.1 percent of the total number of blacks on the felons list. Of the 1,264 whites on the list, 125 proved to be there by mistake-which is 9.9 percent of the total. The error rate for whites was almost double that for blacks.

The Commission did not hear from a single witness who was prevented from voting as a result of being erroneously identified as a felon. One witness did testify that he was erroneously removed from the voter list because he had been mistaken for another individual on the felon list whose name and birth date were practically identical to his. However, he was able to convince precinct officials that there had been a clerical error, and he was allowed to vote.

The Commission completely ignored the bigger story: Approximately 5,600 felons voted illegally in Florida on November 7, approximately 68 percent of whom were registered Democrats. The Miami Herald discovered that, "among the felons who cast presidential ballots, there were "62 robbers, 56 drug dealers, 45 killers, 16 rapists, and 7 kidnappers. At least two who voted were pictured on the state's on-line registry of sexual offenders."

Furthermore, the Post found no more than 108 "law-abiding" citizens of all races that "were purged from the voter rolls as suspected criminals, only to be cleared after the election." In fact during all the various lawsuits against Florida, only two people testified they weren't allowed to vote because their names were mistakenly on the list.

Of the 19,398 voters removed from the rolls, more than 14,600 matched a felon by name, birth date, race and gender.

I was simply emphasizing how really close it was.

As for the fans, not a day goes by that the fans don't complain about something with this team. After signing him, people were practically ready to declare Jeff Garcia the savior of the franchise.
A couple weeks ago, they were ready to hang him.

So, a missed 2-point conversion wouldn't have made a great deal of difference.

Personally, I go for 2.
My thinking, I've been lucky against these guys all day. I don't want to see that luck run out in overtime.
Which is what happened.

We've already seen here in Ohio that Mary Poppins, Dick Tracy, Michael Jordan and more almost got their voter registration in, thanks to a man being payed off in crack.

On Monday, sheriff's deputies arrested Chad Staton, 22, of Defiance, who admitted to investigators that he filled out about 130 registration cards, making up the names and addresses. He said he was hired by a Toledo woman to solicit voter registrations.

She gave him a choice of cash or drugs for his work, Westrick said. He chose crack cocaine.
There is also a story about over 1,200 voter registrations being checked in Cleveland. The name Jive Turkey Sr. kind of clued in election officials to the possibility that some have been made up.

Finally, while I have no documented story to back it up (sorry, I've been looking), I keep hearing reports about voter registration in Franklin County Ohio, where they are approximately 20,000 more people registered to vote than people of voting age.
...
Hey, what do you know, I found one article:
Republicans, Democrats Trade Accusations of Voter Disenfranchisement
Key Paragraph: "I will tell you what is going on in Ohio that is a concern. If you look at Franklin County, the center of the state, a very important county in the election, there are 815,000 people, according to a census, 18 (years) or older, eligible to vote. There are 845,000 registered voters."

It was close. You were a two-point conversion from losing...if only the Browns had the...how do you spell...cahonas to try it.

Packers blew the Cowboys apart and we got to see another successful halfback pass.

You know the game is going bad when your opponent's punter see's his first action with 9 minutes left in the game. That's about when Packers punter Barker finally got to play.

But seriously, I see some quoted Darwin Awards. Those are among the funniest things I have ever read. Even confirmed as bogus, JATO from 1995 is quite possibly my favorite.
Jet Assisted Take-Off
1995 Darwin Awards Winner
Confirmed Bogus by Darwin
The Arizona Highway Patrol were mystified when they came upon a pile of smoldering wreckage embedded in the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The metal debris resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it turned out to be the vaporized remains of an automobile. The make of the vehicle was unidentifiable at the scene.

The folks in the lab finally figured out what it was, and pieced together the events that led up to its demise.

It seems that a former Air Force sergeant had somehow got hold of a JATO (Jet Assisted Take-Off) unit. JATO units are solid fuel rockets used to give heavy military transport airplanes an extra push for take-off from short airfields.

Dried desert lakebeds are the location of choice for breaking the world ground vehicle speed record. The sergeant took the JATO unit into the Arizona desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He attached the JATO unit to his car, jumped in, accelerated to a high speed, and fired off the rocket.

The facts, as best as could be determined, are as follows:

The operator was driving a 1967 Chevy Impala. He ignited the JATO unit approximately 3.9 miles from the crash site. This was established by the location of a prominently scorched and melted strip of asphalt. The vehicle quickly reached a speed of between 250 and 300 mph and continued at that speed, under full power, for an additional 20-25 seconds. The soon-to-be pilot experienced G-forces usually reserved for dog-fighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners.

The Chevy remained on the straight highway for approximately 2.6 miles (15-20 seconds) before the driver applied the brakes, completely melting them, blowing the tires, and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface. The vehicle then became airborne for an additional 1.3 miles, impacted the cliff face at a height of 125 feet, and left a blackened crater 3 feet deep in the rock.

Most of the driver's remains were not recovered; however, small fragments of bone, teeth, and hair were extracted from the crater, and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel.

Ironically a still-legible bumper sticker was found, reading
"How do you like my driving? Dial 1-800-EAT-S#!T."

I TEND TO AGREE WITH THAT STATEMENT. THE BASE THEIR VOTE ON EITHER WHAT THEIR COLLEGE PROFESSOR'S POLITICAL VIEWS ARE OR WHAT DOCKUMENTARIES THEY'VE SEEN. UNFORTUNATELY THIS DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AS AN EDUCATED VOTER.
Actually, this particular vote was done by high school age and lower students. At the library where I work, I helped one 10-12 year old with a questions on the Channel One webpage.
She wanted to know what liberal and conservative meant. It was a tough question for me because I didn't want to let myself spew any kind of bias. What I ended up telling her was that someone who is conservative is more likely to agree with Bush, and someone who is liberal is more likely to agree with Kerry. That seemed to be a good enough explanation for her.

An excellent point to make.
Kerry supported the war, until the Deaniacs showed that an anti-war stance was helping Howard "The Scream" Dean, and Kerry began to take an anti-war stance, then people started supporting him, Dean screamed, and it was over.
Although, I haven't heard a great deal from Kerry about environmental policy, beyond things relating to oil.

Bush has done some political manuvering as well. There is a political trick I've heard about where you take your rival parties most important issue, and use it yourself. Clinton did this several times during his presidency (not sure, but I think NAFTA was one of them). Bush used it with the prescription drugs program.

Just wanted to quickly add, the Green Party isn't what I would consider strong left-wing. You want to know what group worries me on the left? ELF. Say hello to America's unsung terrorist group.

Lethe,
I understand that the government needs tax money. Bush, however, is using a different method for increasing the revenue the government gains.
I also understand you're offering your perspective and not trying to attack me personally.

Basic Economics: There are 2 ways to get money. Charge a high price and sell few items or charge a low price and sell many items.
There is a tricky midpoint where the 2 intersect, maximizing profit.
Or, if I could use an alternate example:
Ever play SimCity 2000? What happens when you raise taxes too high? Businesses move out. People leave and revenue drops. What happens when you decrease taxes? Well, if you go too low, you cannot pay your operating costs. If you find a middle point, you maximize income.
Sometimes, you have to decrease your taxes too much to encourage growth. You may have some losses in the short-term, but long-term, you're city is growing and you may be able to raise taxes a point ot 2 without them getting mad and leaving.

As far as outsourcing is concerned, let me ask you...no, I think challenge you would be a better wording, to find out how many jobs have been insourced.
How many Honda and Toyota plants are in the US? What about Daimler-Chryster? Those are 3 major foreign companies that employ thousands of Americans.
It could be tough, and I'm not going to say that there are MORE insourced than outsourced, but it should be something worth looking at.
While you're looking, see how many Heinz factories are outside the US.

As for the rest, about corporations in general.
Let's say we have a Company. The numbers are completely made up.
This company employs 100 union workers at a cost of $300 per person per week. $30,000 per week.
This company has an income of $35,000 per week, pays $1500 in taxes per week, and wishes to maintain a 10% profit, $3500 per week.

Now, Kerry comes along and raises taxes for them. They now pay $3000 in taxes, double what they payed before.
They have several options:
1. they could reduce their profit margin to $2000 per week
2. they could cut salaries across the board by $15 per week (to $285)
3. they could cut staff by 5 people.

Now, Option 1 hurts the company's ability to expand, to make capital improvements if necessary, and survive if something causes their business to drop. Options 2 hurts all the workers and option 3 hurts 5 workers.
Which is the best option?

By keeping taxes low, you encourage companies to grow, become better, employ more people, and ultimately, that helps the worker and the consumer.

Rights:
Alright. I agree that people deserve rights...but what about the polgamist in Utah? He's gotten in trouble because of his lifestyle, but he should be protected, right?
If 2 men or 2 women can get married, why not 1 man and 5 women? What about 2 men and 1 woman? What about a boy and his dog? A middle-aged woman and a banana (sorry for the mental picture).
Welcome to Pandora's box.

Now, the last time I heard anything, and I don't know if this is 100% fact or not, the consitutional amendment would say Marriage is between a man and a woman, but would leave it to the states to decide on civil unions, which, from what I understand, grant many of the privileges that you brought up.

Health Care: Little personal history about myself. I have not, in 6 years working here at the library, missed a day because I was sick. In 4.5 years of college, I missed maybe 2-3 days for medical reasons...wisdom teeth surgically removed. After I got out of college and before I was put on full-time at the library, I was paying $50 per month for coverage that I ended up never using.

I can only go on what I have heard for my opinions. What I've heard is:
1. the health system Kerry wants is similar to that of Canada.
1a. In Canada, the average time waiting for hip replacement surgery is 52 weeks...or 22 weeks if you go to a back-alley clinic. I heard this stat on the radio this morning. If you do a search for 'canada hip replacement surgery waiting time' on Google, you can find some sites that coroborate.
2. That Kerry's plan will cost several trillion dollars over the next 10 years. That money doesn't grow n trees, so Kerry has to raise taxes to get it. See the information above for tax discussion.

3. Bush's plan gives the people an option, using those medical savings accounts.
Why do premiums go up? Because insurance companies have to be paying out so much.
What if you pay cash for some of your medical visits? Insurance companies DON'T have to pay out, so premiums don't go up...or at least don't go up as fast (and you never know, they might go down).

On a related note to the health issue is the medical malpractice issue. Bush wants to put caps on malpractice settlements, which will in turn help to reduce malpractice insurance, which will lower doctors costs, hence lowers their fees, which reduces how much insurance companies have to pay out, which may lower premiums and that helps the average man.

You do make an excellent point Ric. A lot of people "blindly" support one side or the other without knowing all the facts.

I try to hear all the facts, I really do. I just feel that Bush's methods of doing things will have a better long-term outcome than what Kerry wants to do.

I see Bush trying to put more power in the hands of the people when it concerns our own lives.
(ex. Bush tax cuts let us spend more of our own money, Bush medical savings accounts helps supplement insurance costs)

I see Kerry trying to use the government to take control over our lives.
(ex. Kerry wants to have this massive governmental medical insurance program. He'll need money to pay for it, so he raises taxes. We have less control over what our money is used for, and less control over how we get medical help.)

They didn't pick Kerry because they know he is, as Chaltab said, basically a corpse and thus has no heart.

I was just thinking...
Any issue that anyone wishes to bring up about Kerry/Bush can be debated intelligently and logically (i.e. botox comments and monkey faces aren't exactly intelligent). There are times when I wonder if we should do that here, since we end up talking politics so much. Just start a bunch of threads and talk about issues seperately. Not that I expect any of us will change our minds, but it would be an interesting exercise nonetheless.

Would anyone be interested??
