Info & Info Wanted: 'The Abyss'
Time

As there is no release date yet for The Abyss blu-ray, would anybody like to make a preservation project? I love this movie, and I have it on PAL DVD and NTSC US laserdiscs - several versions, actually: theatrical cut, plus two copies of each extended edition AC3 and box set.

It could be interesting to use the TC version, as it is 1.95:1 - about 328 lines of vertical resolution, Vs 272 lines of extended edition laserdisc and non-anamorphic DVD (no anamorphic DVD release, AFAIK) and overlay it to the 2.35:1 version, to increase part of the original resolution.

Result could be like this (obviously over exagerated):

I should investigate the best method to get rid of the remaining dot crawl - that should not be there, as the Pioneer HLD-X9 have a good comb filter... maybe I used the wrong settings, but I was sure a safe setting was better than an aggressive one... hope to solve all with a derainbow filter, or i should recap all with the 3D comb filter set higher or at max...

I'm a bit involved in (too many) other projects; I just wanted only to "refresh my mind" with other things... EFNY for example... but "I'LL BE BACK!" to this ASAP!

PROJECT UPDATES

The laserdisc soundtracks (digital mono - you could find it here - analog isolated score and commentary) are ready, and in sync with the BD; french center channel - that is comparable, if not equal, to the mono laserdisc soundtrack - is in sync, too.

I thought to release the mono and isolated score as PCM, while the commentary as AC3 - 384kbps will be overkill, maybe 192kbps is more than adequate.

Now, I only need italian, german and spanish soundtracks, so I could release the project! Help will be really appreciate!!!

Laserdisc Ripping?
Time

I'm not aware of a secure test to know if a sound card could capture bit-perfect; you can try to capture a laserdisc AC3 or DTS soundtrack - just two minutes - and play the result file through your digital amplifier; if it is bit-perfect, you will hear the right soundtrack; if not, you will hear noise - sometimes with wrong settings you could hear the right soundtrack for some dozen seconds, then only noise...

Probably the problem is not in the digital capture, but into the analog one... you could always use RightMark Audio Analyzer to test your soundcard: just connect the digital out to the digital in, run the test, and you should obtain something like this (or better):

Testing chain: External loopback (line-out - line-in)
Sampling mode: 16-bit, 48 kHz

Frequency response (from 40 Hz to 15 kHz), dB: +0.00, -0.00 Excellent
Noise level, dB (A): -95.1 Excellent
Dynamic range, dB (A): 95.1 Excellent
THD, %: 0.0005 Excellent
IMD + Noise, %: 0.0052 Excellent
Stereo crosstalk, dB: -96.0 Excellent
IMD at 10 kHz, %: 0.0056 Excellent

HALLOWEEN - Fixing the audio and re-creating 1999 color timing (Released)
Time

Commentary track on laserdisc is different from the one found on BD - don't know about other DVDs, but on the 1999 THX there is no commentary.

Critrion CAV Laserdisc digital soundtrack: I just finished to sync it to the 35th anniversary BD, and I discovered why the LD track floating around in this thread could be not in sync; the dialogs and the score have different sync for each version... I mean, if the BD music is in sync with the LD music, the dialogs are out of sync, and vice versa...

I managed to put in sync the dialogs only, because a lip sync problem is most noticeable than music cues put a bit out of sync; the finished track discrepancies should be around +/- 8.5ms, often even less - really below than the 22ms reccomendation for film lip sync.

Sync made in avisynth, only adding or cutting the equivalent of a ntsc field(s) (16.734ms); the final file is .flac 44khz 16bit to have a smaller file - obviously it's possible to reconvert it to .wav file without losing any bit!

I tested myself and it seems perfectly in sync, but I didn't watch the whole movie, so further testing is needed. If someone is interested, here you are the link (200MB): http://www.sendspace.com/file/bkh315

FIRST TEST CLIP

comparison between the BD and the [spoRv] version; 120MB, 1920x1080, AC3 5.1, 8000kbps

Here you are the comparison screenshots:

Both BD and HDTV colors, brightness and contrast are untouched. I much prefer HDTV both for colors and overall image; even if it's more grainy, well, it's more... grainy? You know what I mean, right? (^^,)

I'm waiting for your comments!

Take a look at this thread:

http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=2289

there are some screenshots from the LD - it's true, they are not captures but only pictures from TV, but they may be useful too... and I LOVE the black cat... it seems taken off directly from the TV... by the way, they seems really close (if not the same) to the DVD.

I contacted a member on lddb; waiting for further screenshots.

CP, thank you very much... this kind of post, like many others, keeps me going on with my projects!

Back to the project: stamper sent me the central channel of a french 5.1, and it's pretty much the same of the mono soundtrack; I *overlaid* it to the isolated score, and the result seems better than the central channel alone; I'm still working on it, further sync is needed.

During this work, I listened better to the isolated score; John Carpenter is a great composer of minimal electronic music; there is a piano track that reminds me the atmosphere of horror video games like Silent Hill...

Forgot to mention: the BD and LD commentaries are different...

First of all, thanks to nirbateman, Chewtobacca, Doctor M, bkev; you took care and time to download, watch and comment the test clips; your help is really appreciated, and pointed me to the

Possible Candidate #1

This is the same scene of the previous tests; this time I took AnaloClean, HaloClean, put them in the kitchen blender, and voilà! Here you are HaloClean2 - a lot less ghosting than AnaloClean, a lot more details than HaloClean... best of both world, I believe...

http://www.sendspace.com/file/rbk27i

So, if you like AnaloClean details, but hate the residual ghosting, you'll love HaloClean2... (^^,) well, I hope so...

Actually, theatrical Dolby Digital is 320kbps... mainly quality depends from the master; if the master is the same, an higher bitrate should means more quality; many laserdisc AC3 soundtracks used (almost the) same theatrical mixes, while the DVD ones were remixed to be more compatible with the TV audio, hence really often laserdisc AC3 soundtracks were better than their DVD counterparts.
