Final encoding: which software do you use?
Time

Please post here the sofware you use for final encoding.

I'd like to know the OS, the sofware, the optimal settings for maximum compatibility with hardware standalone disc players, and the encoder used (example: x264 for AVC, HCenc for MPEG2).

This is because I had some compatibility issues with my latest project, and still have not found where the problem lies... probably in the encoding process, but without some references, it's really hard to say.

Thanks in advance to everyone!

The only thing I will do with the video is color regrading: no DVNR, EE or something else. AVC will be used, DTS-HD MA will be copied "as is", and left untouched; I'll use the usual five languages for the soundtracks, with related subtitles; if JetrellFo will be able to find out the Cinema DTS track, I'll use it too.

You wrote about isolated score: is this available somewhere?

kk650's Star Wars Saga: Regraded and Semi-Specialized (Released)
Time

I downloaded both - wow, 1GB EACH! - and I must admit they look so similar that I'm not sure which I like most... probably test3, because it *seems* to have a little bit red less on the whites, but maybe my eyes are too tired to judge this, after watching alternatively some hours of extras from various DVDs and surfing the net... (^^,)

Overall, the colors are OK but, again, my brain keeps saying "faces are a bit too tan for OUR tastes"... maybe they should BE as they are, because they live in a desert planet, after all... so, forget what I wrote and stick with one of your latest settings; I'm sure me and poita will still be happy with the final result!

You are right; the EU BD has lower bitrate in comparison to the US BD, but, again, IIRC, differences are so tiny that maybe could be spotted only using a video projector with a big screen, sitting very close... (^^,)

There are a lot of grain in the EU BD, too - I mean, the "good" grain. English DTS-HD MA will be left "as is". I have not the isolated score, but if someone could provide it, I'll be more than happy to add it, too.

About the extras: I should study and see if the EU BD and EU DVD have the same extras or not; maybe I could always do another BD filled with extras, if there will be enough interest in it...

Info: THE ARRIVAL - Special Edition (seeking a team up) (lots of useful info)
Time

The audio commentary will be added, as the PCM soundtrack, and maybe the AC3 one as well.

I WANT to include extras from laserdisc, but I hate the idea to spend a lot of time on a project, discovering after it's finished there are better sources around... I mean, laserdisc is good, but often DVD is better... this is why I'd like to release a movie only project first - as I have all the sources needed - and add an extra disc later - because *maybe* the KinoWelt DVD extras are the same of the laserdisc, probably with better quality... got the point?

Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) [spoRv] <em>BD-25</em> (Released)
Time

,^…^, presents Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) [spoRv] - special project of Restored version

| Released projects | Projects in progress | Future projects | Mission & Setup |

Mission: to improve Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) contrast and brightness, and replace two wrong shots.

Video sources: Blu-ray, DVD.

Audio sources: Blu-ray, DVD.

Subtitles sources: Blu-ray, DVD.

Project info:

“Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem” was released on Blu-ray in U.S.A. with both Theatrical and Unrated cuts - at the contrary, in Europe only the Theatrical cut was available in Blu-ray.

Despite the fact that it has a good video quality, it has two flaws: image is too dark - even if it is an artistic choice, often it’s difficult to recognize what’s going on - and the Unrated cut has two shots missing, replaced with the Theatrical version.

Some reviews about the image quality:

I was mostly impressed by what I saw (or should I say, could see?)

Aliens vs. Predator Requiem is a dark movie, a very dark movie in fact, perhaps one of if not the darkest I’ve ever borne witness to. Even brightly lit outdoor scenes are dark and slightly murky in appearance.

Detail, what we can see of it, is sharp and clear.

Black levels are fantastic, but sometimes the movie is so dark that its hard to clearly see what is on screen.

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Aliens-vs-Predator-Requiem-Blu-ray/696/#Review

You can’t see a damn thing. AVP-R is beautifully shot and rendered, but 75% of it is in the pitch black, making much of the action indistinguishable. You’ll find yourself straining your eyes to make out what’s going on more often than your brain can endure. God forbid you should watch the film under normal daylight conditions; it might as well be a radio play. Some critics have excused this choice as atmospheric. Others suggest it’s to cover for flaws in the creature suits. Regardless of the reasons, the result is problematic at best.

http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/avprbluray.php

Shadow delineation is somewhat lacking, with many details in the darkness obscured and crushed. Colors are undersaturated, but they match the storytelling nicely, and contrast is overdone.

http://www.widescreenreview.com/hddisc_detail.php?recid=11188

A fault with seamless branching means that the Unrated Edition is actually missing two changes on its Blu-ray release — namely the alternate footage used when the Predalien attacks the homeless people in the sewers, and when Jesse’s body melts in half in the hospital. In both instances, the Blu-ray shows the theatrical footage at these points.

http://avp.wikia.com/wiki/Aliens_vs._Predator:_Requiem_Unrated_Edition

The BluRay Disc contains the R-Rated as well as the Unrated in very good quality. Although especially the second difference between the Unrated Version on BluRay and that on DVD does seem like censorship, it is not very likely that it actually is. What’s more likely, is that the Seamless Branching is responsible for this flaw.

http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=285280

With this project, I’ll try to improve contrast and brightness to reveal more details in particular in very dark scenes, but trying to retain as inky black as possible; the two missing scenes will be replaced using DVD as source - even if quality is lower than BD, I’d prefer to watch them in the proper place rather than watching an incomplete Unrated cut… plus, as different languages will be included, this could be the occasion for many european people to watch the unrated cut in high definition for the first time.

kk650, overall I think your color grading is very good; I'd prefer a little bit of saturation less, but it maybe only my personal taste; white balance is OK to me.

There is only a problem in the final shot of the spaceship; it changes color grading in both your clips - don't know if this is present in the original source, or is due to the color grading.

I like it, you are close, go on!!!

DTS audio preservation .... UPDATE 07 May 2015 ... Work In Progress
Time

Why Spawn Director's cut on Blu-ray is 96min, while on laserdisc is 98min, and Special Edition laserdisc is 97min? Maybe the trailer on laserdiscs is counted in, or the BD has some scenes cut?!?

A little bit OT, but as we were talking about Spawn... do the two Todd McFarlane Spawn animation features (one and two) exist on DVD or BD?
