Star Wars 97SE in HD using super resolution & more
Time

Found an old avisynth script to “mix’n’match” colors from two sources, I applied it to this project, adding the '04 colors from the HDTV; here you are a test clip - I used intentionally quite challenging shots at the beginning, so if you like it (or, at least, don’t dislike it too much) I think the rest of the movie should be only better…

Alien saga [Fundamental Collection] (Released)
Time

Alien
I used the D-Theater as main source, and BD as second source, because the D-Theater was the Director’s Cut. Video is a bit wider than BD, and, after a careful cleaning, it retains more details, too. I used the PAL UK laserdisc as it used a distinctly different master; now, for example, the Ash head scene is green, and should be closer to the film colors.
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/205713
as you can see, most of the shots have a wider image in comparison to the BD, except the ones shorter or not present in the theatrical cut

Aliens
BD as the only source, PAL UK laserdisc as color reference; as the LD was the Special Edition, I did all the needed steps to put it in sync with the theatrical cut; I have decided to use a brief (3s) shot from laserdisc, because is different from BD.
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/205714
no more “mono-green-tint” now!

Alien³
BD as the only source, PAL UK laserdisc as color reference; LD colors are warmer and they seems to be color accurate - for example, it’s still blue out of the window in the second scene in Andrews’ office, as in the first one, while in the BD it’s greyish; also, the slight pink shift present in the BD is not there in the LD.
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/205715
pink tint gone

Alien: Resurrection
BD as the only source, DTS NTSC US laserdisc as color reference; it seems this laserdisc, as well as the THX AC3 and earlier DVD, used a silver retention processed print as source or as color reference; colors are warmer, and no sign of the quite heavy pink shift present in the BD.
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/205716
pink tint gone as well; increased contrast, and color variations are fixed - note for example the water in the 5th row and Call’s skin in the 6th one

Note: all versions are the theatrical cuts.

Status: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 released; Alien Resurrection will be released soon.

Opinions, feedbacks, critics, are all welcome!

Star Wars saga - Extra Extended Edition (1080p) (* unfinished project / WIP *)
Time

PC is up and running; sadly, I can’t find a way to let some avisynth plugins work - including some used for some extended scenes… 😦

Add to this I’m without internet connection (apart phone) since ten days…

I would be back on the right track ASAP; meanwhile, all the members who can, and want, help are encouraged to post here, just to gather the forces and prepare for the battle! 😄

The theatrical colors of the Star Wars trilogy
Time

DrDre said:

I can confirm, that during the Mos Eisley entrance scene the orange/yellow droid R5-A2 is indeed more yellow than orange. The shot where Luke and the gang are stopped by Stormtroopers looks somewhat like this:

Bluray regraded:

That reminds me the PAL laserdiscs are indeed not too far from it, color wise:

Image taken from my first project… colors are duller in comparison, due to capture card used, capture settings, laserdisc player, inherent composite nature of the source etc.

Avisynth parallel encoding
Time

Studing a good way to improve speed with avisynth, I tested some different path…

  • New CPU: obvious… but take in account the complete cpubenchmark score, not only the single thread - if, for example, your old dual core CPU has a single thread score of 500 and complete score of 1000, and the new quad core has a single thread score of 1000 and complete score of 4000, it will go four time faster, more or less!
  • Faster HDD (or better SSD): haven’t tried an SSD yet, but I’m pretty sure this will not improve the overall speed.
  • Avisynth 64bit: could indeed improve speed, but it has quite few compatible plugins…
  • MT version and other multithread plugins: could work, but sometimes MT crashes, and other plugins didn’t work - probably my fault
  • Parallel encoding: it works well! Follow me…

I tried this path in the latest days; I didn’t dare to try it with my poor old dual core, dual threaded CPU, but with the new quad core, eight treaded one, I wanted to give it a try… and, oh boys, it works, very well!

How it works?

Well, just take your script, and “cut” it in several pieces - it seems that four pieces works well here, they run the CPU at around 80%, leaving some breath for surfing and other little things; probably it could work with more pieces, but your mileage can vary.

Before

project1.avs
avisource(“your source.avi”)
filter1
filter2
filter3
[/code]

After

project1_part1.avs

avisource(“your source.avi”)
filter1
filter2
filter3
trim(000000,040020)

project1_part2.avs

avisource(“your source.avi”)
filter1
filter2
filter3
trim(040000,080020)

project1_part3.avs

avisource(“your source.avi”)
filter1
filter2
filter3
trim(080000,120020)

project1_part4.avs

avisource(“your source.avi”)
filter1
filter2
filter3
trim(120000,000000)

project1_final.avs

a=avisource(“project1_part1.avi”).trim(000000,039999)
b=avisource(“project1_part2.avi”).trim(000000,039999)
c=avisource(“project1_part3.avi”).trim(000000,039999)
d=avisource(“project1_part4.avi”)

a+b+c+d

Encode them at the same time; speed improvement: from 250% up to 400%, depending on how “heavy” are the filters/plugins…

You know, instead of waiting, let’s say, two days, it’s better to wait “just” 12 hours, don’t you think?

Hope this would be of some help.

The Matrix [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED*
Time

Latest testing gave excellent results; using BD contrast, there are no artefacts; even if colors now are a bit off in comparison to previous version, I learned that DVD was very “flat”, so now, to me, it’s better - fear not, the DVD colors are there, just faces are less green/brown/blue (following the shot tones).

I’m aware that many have chosen the HDTV open matte as the prefferred version - it is quite good indeed, still, BD has better resolution, less compression, and the OAR.

So, anyone interested?!?

Halloween [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED*

Had bad connection lately, so I was forced to use a friend’s one - you noted it, right? 😉

Well, from now on, my projects will be released under a new “label” - agree that it’s nice and more appealing than the old one… and it was time to change something!

PROJECT RELEASED
