I think it might be a good idea to treat your fanedits like a Cinematic Universe, of which this is the third installment. If you plan on making movie edits of all these upcoming shows, they’re going to have about that level of interconnectedness.

That’s the plan. I’ll see how this season pans out before deciding on an overarching “Title”. I may just stick to The Mandalorian and have this as episode 3.

I wonder if there will be enough flashback material to make two films: Post-RotJ and Post-Mandalorian. A snippet of the relevant Return of the Jedi scenes could be used as a prologue to the first one.

Looks like we will be getting a lot of flashback material, however, rather than make a movie out of it I’ll probably scale it back as much as I can. My first cut has the opening logos, crawl and first episode at just 20 mins. I’ve cut a lot of the Tusken stuff but I have a feeling that some scenes will need to go back in.
I’m also hoping that the later flashback scenes involving Fennec can be cut into episodes 1 and 2 of the Mandalorian.

I’m very excited for this after your amazing Mando movies! The crawl looks great! And it’s awesome to see the after credit scene stay!

I know there’s been a lot of talks about all the Post-OT shows pulling a Marvel and all lining up for a big conclusion series that wraps all the story lines together.

Just a hypothetical idea for the future… Do you plan to combined all the series together into a series of movies in the future? You say that you will add some of the Book of Boba Fett flashbacks to the Mando movie edits, but what if we get flashback scenes of how Boba got to where he was when we see him in Season 2 of Mando? Or say we get scenes from the Ashoka series showing how she got to the planet we see her on in Mando season 2.

It’d be really cool if by the end of all these Post-OT series, you were able to do a series of movies with all the characters story lines running along side each other.

Obviously this whole idea is a long ways away and also depends on just how well the shows could mesh but it could be something really awesome if it worked out. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

After each post ROTJ TV season I’ll return to the preceding movies and adjust them to produce a continuity. I did it with Mando 1 after the second season was released to put the Tatooine scenes back in. Once BOBF is finished I’ll go back to Mando 1 and Mando 2.

Heres my review of The Mandalorian Episode 1: A vergence in the Force

PROS
Technical details like scene transitions and audio edits are top notch. I didnt notice any audio errors from one episode to another. And for me the more wipe transitions the better. I enjoyed the opening crawl text, it was clear and set the stage.

I was surprised at how far into episode 1 you cut but it still worked. This was a bold choice that paid off. I like the opening shot inside the cockpit where we dont see mando right from the start just a glimpse of his back. This worked well as a mysterious introduction to the character. The merginig of grief carga doing business with mando into one scene worked well without losing any information. I enjoyed looking for those kinds of edits while watching. Streamlining the first episode and cutting out others completely helped keep a logical flow of the movie so viewers wouldnt get whiplash jumping from one planet to the next. The mudhorn encounter is believable considering what you had to work with. Now that scene is followed by mando fixing his armor which is a small change but makes more sense. Moving Kuils montage of fixing IG-11 to the front of the film works so much better here. Originally it seemed like a random exposition scene but now it adds an interesting plot thread that pays off towards the end. Really good job on that. Thankfully arguably the worst scene in the series is gone: the dreaded scout trooper sequence in the last episode. Thank you for not making me watch that again. With that scene removed the pacing and transition between the last 2 episodes is silky smooth.

CONS
My only real complaint of this edit was the inclusion of the gunsligner episode. This was the only time I was taken out of the story as i realized i was going to have to watch one of my least favorite episodes in its entirety. I think this really added alot to the total runtime of the movie as well. I will say i understand why you chose to keep it. Its probably the right decision because there needed to be a passage of time from episode 3 to 7. And if your going to do future edits of shows to movies (i hope you do), Boba Fett finding Fennec Shand is probably important. Maybe if you cut it down a little more? To be fair I think this episode works better here than a standalone episode.

I miss seeing more of Cara Dune (who is one of my faves:D) but i think her introduction worked. When your watching it u assume shes someone he knew from his travels and i dont think it seemed out of nowhere.

NITPICKS
I honestly do not understand the tracking fobs in general, i dont think they make any sense and are just lazy storytelling. I would just take out any reference to them out completely. But that is neither here nor there i just felt like sharing.

I dont like the “helmets” intro on disney plus. Watching it synced to the fox fanfare didnt feel right. i know its just an easter egg and has no consequence. I would have preferred the usual starwars logo to begin the crawl and maybe change the title to simply: The Mandalorian. I noticed there are only 3 ellipsis when the other starwars films have 4.

CONCLUSION
The superior way to watch season 1. Aside from the gunsligner episode dragging down the pacing, i thought this movie told the story better than separate episodes. I really enjoyed watching this edit and dissecting all your decisions. This edit proves sometimes less is more.

Thanks for the review. Much appreciated. I agree with your cons. There definitely needed to be time between the first and third acts. Originally I used the Sanctuary episode, but it needed to be changed to the Gunslinger to fit in with the wider Mandoverse. I agree its not a great episode, but I do love a trip to Tatooine! I’m hoping that we get a few flashback scenes in the Book of Boba Fett that I can add in to give it more weight.

Good spot on the Elipses. That wasnt intentional.

Mando EP3: A New Path (A Book of Boba Fett Edit) [RELEASED]
Time

Here is my edit of the Book of Boba Fett. With Din Djarin’s story being a surprise feature and the Boba portions being a bit disappointing with a lot of flashback scenes, I have decided to edit this as episode 3 of the Mandalorian. Headlines are:

  1. Din and Boba’s present stories run side-by-side for the first half and merge on Tatooine for the final
    battle.
  2. The Luke/Grogu/Ahsoka scenes are moved to the end of the movie and Grogu no longer travels to Tatooine.
  3. The flashbacks are largely removed. The only parts that remain are edited versions of the sarlaac escape,
Tusken Gaffi training, Pikes negotiation and Tusken massacre.
  4. The mods are heavily edited with the Krrsantan palace infiltration and capture of the majordomo being
completely removed. The Majordomo is not seen again after the first meeting between Boba and the Mayor.
  5. Cuts and edits have been made to strengthen Boba’s character to have him more in control of the plot.

I have also made a new logo for the series which better fits with the man Star Wars logo:

Here is a full list of changes

Really enjoyed this. I could see the huge amount of work you put into the restructuring to make the narrative seamless, and I appreciated your moving of lines from cut content to keep their value in this movie. Excellent work.

Only nitpick would be the transitions- I didn’t feel like any were necessary, most notably that final iris wipe after Gideon’s darksaber reveal, which came fast after another transition.

I cut the Gideon scene from the first version for that very reason. However, it made sense to put it back in, having had to cut the Gideon survival reveal from episode 2. The only way to avoid the double transition is to have the Gideon scene be the final scene, but that isn’t how Star Wars movies end… they alway end with a feeling of hope, adventure or celebration.

I noticed only one audio error during v2. There’s audio delays during the Armorer’s fight scene against the Stormtroppers. Other than that this was a very well done fan edit, and your v2 will be my go to for Season 1.

Arrrghhh. Well spotted. Don’t know how that slipped through. Replacements are being rendered and will be up tomorrow 😦

Again another smudger9 masterpiece. So I truly enjoyed his v1 as a stand alone but totally understand the need / want of v2 now that season 2 is out there. All that being said it’s just incredible. I’m to the point where I almost want to skip the episodic nature of season 3 and just wait on smudger9’s edit.

Thanks for the review.

I plan on doing feature film versions of all the live action stuff. It’s going to be a busy year!

Just watched this, and I’m impressed. You managed to cut out a whole lot, and it flowed so well. Could certainly have been a blockbuster as-is. I had a great time, and am refreshed and ready for the new Boba Fett book coming out next month.

Thanks Hal. Glad you enjoyed it. A Book of Boba Fett Movie is my next planned project, then one for Kenobi, then probably 2 for Andor. Busy year!!!

Mando EP2: Search for the Jedi [V2 RELEASED]
Time

Version 2 is now completed and will be rendered this weekend. Anyone still wishing to download Version 1 will be able to until Wednesday. Then the links will be replaced with this version.

In short version 2 is an update that fits in better with my Episode 2 movie and hopefully The Book of Boba when released. Main changes are:

  1. Tatooine has replaced Sjorgen as the “middle act” of the movie.
  2. Moff Gideon climbing out of the wrecked Tie Fighter is now in the movie itself, rather than being a post credits scene.
  3. I have removed a lot of the “Mando gets shot” scenes which were just too many in number.

Both clips work well, I would probably favour the second on the grounds that the scenario is a little more straight forward, however both have their merits. Look forward to the final, updated edit

Thanks.

I went for the second one in the end for the reason you stated. The battle scene is now finished, I just need to tidy up the transition from Tatooine to meeting Cara. The Sorgen music is bothering me so I’m having to rebuild the audio to take it out.

The New Republic EP1: A Vergence in the Force 4K (The Mandalorian Season 1 Edit) [V4 RELEASED]

So an update on V2 of Ep1.
I’ve had the Gunslinger scenes edited together for a while, but have been going back and forth on how to fit them into the overall movie.

There were 2 points on which I was struggling. Firstly whether Mando meets Cara Dune before he goes to Tatooine, or just meets up with her after Tatooine. I’ve finally settled on just the one meeting but have slightly extended the scene by cutting in parts of the Sanctuary.
Here is the scene… the audio isn’t finalised yet.

https://vimeo.com/640738207

The second debate is exactly where to insert the space battle preceding Tatooine. I have 2 options.

  1. It occurs as Mando leaves Nevarro. In this scenario Mando escapes by entering hyperspace rarer than blowing up the bounty hunter’s ship, the Razor is then forced to exit hyperspace due to the damage sustained in the battle.

https://vimeo.com/640697741
(audio needs a lot of work)

  1. Mando escapes Nevarro and is attacked just after he exits hyperspace.

https://vimeo.com/640697944
(audio needs lots of work and “that’s my line” needs editing out.

Let me know your thoughts.

Hi,

I just watched your EP1 cut and must say that I’m impressed. First of all thank you so much for all the effort.

I really don’t understand the hype about this series since its first season left me yawning on my sofa. Somehow I managed to watch it all, waiting for the plot twist, some development, some change - but there was nothing. So when the second season was aired I was again hoping for more fun watching (I’m a fan, what can I do?) but I gave up after 3 episodes. It was the same guy with no expression (helmet) and a cute green alien with hardly any expression (baby, cgi) fly to some planet, get into trouble (make promises, bad guys show up, monsters), get out of it or flee, repeat. Really disappointing, when you think of the character’s potential.

In your EP1 you managed to streamline and pace the plot, get rid of redundancies, cringe and all the explanatory stuff (Come on Disney, this is made for star wars fans, we follow the force, we know. Stop explaining star wars to us). And I can’t thank you enough for it, it is so much better now. This is the way (repeat 10 times).

But as i mentioned before - I am a fan - since the day I saw episode IV in a cinema that didn’t care about my real age back in 1977. I need to know what’s happening. So, if possible PM me with a link to EP2. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Many thanks. DM sent.

I watched this last night and I have to say that overall, once again, smudger, you did an amazing job. I’m really just in awe of how brilliantly and seamlessly you worked 8 episodes into one movie. So, so well done. OK, I wrote my thoughts down while writing it.

  • Fantastic crawl. It was concise, clear, had enough punch and set everything up beautifully.
  • I adored how it went from the Star Wars theme to the end of that familiar SW end note after the crawl to The Mandalorian music. BRILLIANT!
  • One of the things I like about making a film from a show is that shows have longer scenes that allow characters and beats to breathe and play out (well, good shows do) and you kept that in certain spots. Like in the intro of Cobb Vance. You wisely kept that whole scene as is.
  • On the other hand, I would have cut all but the first scene with the Sand People though. The scenes with the bantha sacrifice not happening and the “negotiations” I didn’t feel were needed because we got all the information that basically happened in those scenes in the town meeting scene–and much more emotionally told. (That the Sand People had studied them for generations, and that the town people would be fighting along side them.)
  • I understand why you cut the entire Frog Lady adventure, but the random landing thrust not working really did come out of nowhere, and it really does feel like we missed something with nothing happening other than the New Republic pilots coming upon them. I don’t know… that might just be because I know what’s there. Still, the meeting with her and her husband, and then Mando dropping Grogu off to them later held so little resonance as well. So, yeah, I dunno. That’s a tricky one. I had no problem with the dripping Razorcrest in the background, it looked like it could be another ship. I just think maybe adding a few more scenes during the flight of interaction could have helped to give more resonance, I guess. I dunno.
  • The tracking device being implanted also comes out of nowhere. I mean, Mando wouldn’t just let anyone touch his ship for no reason. So I kinda wish you’d kept that part in. Or taking out that scene with the tech telling Gideon. Did we really need it? Obviously Gideon has spies everywhere. Then later when Boba mentioned that he tracked Mando that basically made it clear he could be tracked, so Gideon doing so makes perfect sense.
  • By the way…how did Mando find out that Gideon was alive?
  • As much as I loved all the stuff with Ahsoka, I agree with your cuts. They weren’t necessary for Mando/Grogu’s story. I would have just added one more tiny cut. Since you went straight from the explaining why she can’t train him scene to their last scene, I would have cut her line “I can not train him” after “you’re like a father to him” and before telling him to go to the mountain. I think based on the shots it would have worked seamlessly and not been repetitious since we just had the last scene of her explaining all of why she couldn’t train him.
  • Well, re: the above, the explanation of Mando getting the beskar staff is important, though. Hmm… I didn’t remember him getting the spear from the magistrate until he picked it up in the wreckage. I was like what? where? When he picked it up and had to rack my brains trying to figure out where that came from since it was so noticeable and remarked upon. Then I remembered, and of course, it played such a big part later in the fight.
  • I have to admit the whole section with Mayfield and that episode doesn’t feel like it’s missing anything at all. So, I got to hand it to you, it’s completely seamless which means, yup, the Mayfield stuff is completely unnecessary in the first film too. Great, great job. (ETA: Erm… more on that later.)
  • That repeat of that speech to Gideon that Mando makes verbatim is gone? That part was awesome! I’m really surprised you cut that. (And bummed.)
  • So, obviously this was IN the show but the fact that this is all in one “movie” and it’s called Search for the Jedi, it’s SO INCREDIBLY powerful when THE Jedi shows up. I got full body chills, I was grinning from ear to ear, I was more overwhelmed and excited and utterly beside myself watching every single moment with Luke taking out the Dark Troopers than when I first watched it. I was imagining that if this was in a movie how incredible powerful this would be in a theater. People would be hooting and hollaring and going wild.
  • In my opinion, I don’t think that Mando not taking his mask off beforehand works. When you told me earlier that by taking it out we get the full impact of him taking it off with Grogu I thought, ‘oh yeah, that’s true.’ The problem is that it’s not played that way on screen at all… as if Din is dealing with this huge thing of taking off his mask for the first time in front of a lot of people, breaking the code, in fact, taking his mask off doesn’t effect him at all, which makes absolutely zero sense for a guy who has made such a huge deal about it for two straight “movies.” And, of course, anyone who watched the show knows why… he already DID do that when he took his mask off the actual first time. It was hugely difficult for him, he did deal with it, and he realized what mattered was Grogu. So him taking off the mask again so Grogu could see his face was why it was emotionally resonating. That was the beat that hit this time. The first time was about Din and his issues. The second time was all about Grogu and their bond. But if you don’t see Din dealing with all of his mask/face revealing issues it leaves this gaping character hole. Which is why the Mayfield stuff kinda has to be included a bit. I wonder how much of that could be included, but trimming a bunch of the ooh! shocks, near-misses, fake-outs, etc. fat to get to the meat. Hmm…

Anyhoo, even with all the few changes I would have made, still, again, OVERALL… just wow, wow, wow. Once again you have done an outstanding job. Kudos, kudos out the ying yang!

Thanks for the review. Some very interesting points.

Removing the Bantha sacrifice could work. It would mean that I could reinstate the Tuskens arriving at Mos Pelgo.

Lots of the Frog lady stuff had to go in the end because of timing. I kept the Republic pilots in to give her and Mando a little more interaction, but that was the best I could do.

Yes the tracking beacon scene isn’t necessarily needed, but it acts as a spacer scene to give a smoother transition between episodes. And there was plenty of time for it to be planted when the Razor was being repaired on Trask.

With regards to Mando finding out that Gideon is alive. It’s implied in the opening crawl that he finds out off screen. This will flow better when V2 of Episode 1 is released which shows Gideon surviving. I had a version where Bo Katan tells Mando that Gideon is alive, but I just couldn’t quite get the dialogue to work.

It was a real shame to cut a lot of the Ashoka stuff, but as you say it didn’t add to the story and in the end was an obvious cut to make. It does remove the Beskar staff origin, but I don’t think it’s needed. You get enough exposition from Boba when Mando pulls it out of the Razor wreckage. We don’t need to know where it came from, we just need to know what it is.

The Mando speech to a Gideon was in right until the end and was a nice spacer scene, but I felt there were too many quick scene cuts in short order, so I cut it.

I agree it would have been better to have the first Mando mask removal in, but that would involve having pretty much the whole episode in there. That would be too much in terms of time and plot.

Well, that’s how I feel when I watch your Mando edits. Btw long time ago, If I remember correctly, you said you d do an alternative version of those edits, titled as STAR wars Episode VII, Ep VIII etc.

By anthology style I meant no opening crawl, just something like “The Mandalorian: A Star Wars Story” 😀

Out of curiosity, I know it’s too soon to say without the original material, but do you think You ll make a movie edit versions of Ahsoka or Obi-Wan or Boba Fett serieses?

I’m currently toying with doing a “complete edition” which involves two 1h 45min movies for each series.
EP1: Chapters 1 to 3 including the opening bar scene and the Jawas.
EP2: Chapters 4, 5, 7 and 8.
EP3: Chapters 9, 10, 11 and 12.
EP4: Chapters 13, 14 and 16
These will probably involve a different intro, and will keep me occupied until the book of Boba.

As for the other series… absolutely. My intention is to make movies from all the live action material. Really looking forward to Kenobi… it should work really well as a movie since it was originally designed to be one.

I’d also like to make a couple of Bad Batch movies, but I’m not sure I’ll have the time.

As always, great job man!!!
I love it. Of course, I miss some bits (ep1 opening sequence, some Ahsoka scenes) but overall, fantastic job, great editing. As a one concise movie, it s even better than the previous one (mostly thanks to the original material, but still).

It really feels like watching a proper Episode VIII made in the 90s 😉

Will you ever consider releasing a version of those movies in style of Anthology Movies (RO, Solo)?

Thanks. And EPVIII from the 90’s…… how amazing would that have been 😃.

In terms of releasing a version in the anthology style - what do you mean?
