Hey Smudger, do you plan on doing a Obi Wan Kenobi edit (The Smudger Cut)?

That was my my intention, but I just didn’t have any free time when Kenobi was airing and there are now a lot of completed edits. My priorities at the moment are.

  1. Have a clear slate for when Andor starts so that I can edit it as the series happens. Looks like there will be enough footage for 2 movies.

  2. Update Mando Episodes 1 and 2 to include some footage from BOBF and add in the fight from the Ahsoka episode. Episode 1 is completed apart from one music transition. Episode 2 is completed other than tightening up the Battle from the Ahsoka episode.

  3. Complete my 2 edits from Bad Batch. Episode 2 is completed apart from the opening pan. Episode 1 needs more work. I need a satisfying way of including some of the Clone Wars arc.

  4. Kenobi Edit.

So Kenobi probably isn’t happening before Andor 😦

@smudger9 I finished your edit and it was pretty great! its amazing how editing can really making a meandering story a lot more compelling haha. Overall i think its a pretty solid effort and i appreciate the time put into it. If you want some feedback i have a few things that i thought might be tightened up a bit!:

-like @g00b pointed out the fighter flight transition to fennec is a tad weird feeling. i think its actually because the triumphant nature of the launch into space is very abruptly cut short when he lands again. i think it would do the scene a lot of good to see him flying through space and even putting the scene back where he flies past the kid in the shuttle. I know that part of the scene is used later to show him leaving to see luke but i think it would do the other scene a lot of good. speaking of…
-like you mentioned, it might be better to excise the whole luke part entirely and add it onto the season 3 edit instead for mando. it doesnt belong at all narratively the way the current movie edit works and feels like some over extended epilogue. it also creates problems when you see grogus choice, which is supposed to be a big deal, smash cuts to him in the back seat which comes off much more comedic then maybe it should feel. it felt dramatically cheap i guess
-the final climax spend a tad too much time too with the mods and the free town people i think for what they have been built up to be in these current edit, it makes it last a bit too long i feel and the pacing ends up being off
-finally the last point i felt is that some of the flashbacks maybe should be added back, and this is really personal and i know you mentioned debating on doing that or not. if you remove the luke scenes and less climax scenes that frees up a lot of time i feel. but boba steeling his ship back and blowing up the sarlac and then the biker gang are such good beats it feels like a waste not to have them in, but for pacing if it doesnt work i understand. maybe doing it in montage form could help? also it feels like there wasnt enough time with the tuskins really to justify even spending some time with them in the flashbacks, maybe more scenes of them bonding like the train scene could help but it feels like something is missing still with them.
-as a minor quibble too, the fight scene between boba and fennec and the red shield guys is still incredibly goofy, that could be tightened up a bit to be faster paced and cooler and less clunky from the original episode

Anyways, i hope these points dont come off overly critical because i didnt spend a whole lot of time praising the rest of the work which i think was very very good. it made these few points stand out more since the rest was very well done! im guessing youve already considered most of these points anyways, but uit doesnt hurt to bring them up i hope! Lin

Thankyou so much for the Review and the points you make are the things that I struggled with most in this edit.

Let’s take the Luke scenes first. The first thing I needed to in this edit do was remove them from the middle of the movie because it totally details the story. This then meant removing Grogu’s arrival on Tatooine and hence his and Pelli’s appearance in the final battle. Once I achieved that the question was whether to leave in the Luke scenes or remove them.
My decision to keep them was for 2 main reasons:

  1. They are great scenes that I ultimately need in this movie series.
  2. Because I was trying to create a “Mando” episode 3 out of the BOBF I felt that I needed the scenes to give Mando enough plot and story progression.

However, it did always feel “tacked on” and way too easy for Mando to find where Luke was. What I will almost certainly do is have the scenes as the opening to episode IV and reference his search in the opening crawl. I can then hopefully
cut from Grogu being told he needs to make a decision to another scene without Din and have the reunion happen off screen.

Now, the starfighter transition. Again this is something I tried to fix but there just isn’t the footage to achieve this without removing the Rhodian child.
I’m really determined to keep the Rhodian child scene where it is because it works so well as a motivation and pointer for Mando’s journey and when I remove the Luke scenes it will give the needed emotional weight to end the movie, a bit like ESB.
I’m hoping that when Mando S3 comes it will give me enough new starfighter scenes to correct this transition.

With the Mods and Freetowners in the final battle, I felt I had to keep their scenes in because Mando recruiting the Freetowners is basically what brings Mando and Boba’s stories together. Without them having a significant part in the final battle it doesn’t give the stories a reason to connect. And since I removed the awful Mod speeder chase and the Krrsantan palace infiltration, the final battle is the only time we really see the mods “in action”.
For version 2 I will look at how it plays out removing the sniper scenes and remove that if it works.

The flashbacks… I must confess I really didn’t enjoy them as much as others, but ultimately I cut them down to the minimum in order to keep the story moving. In terms of Boba’s journey what we needed to know was how he escaped the sarlacc, how he lost his armour, how he became part of the Tusken tribe and learned to use a Gaffi stick (pays off in the Cad Bane fight) and how his tribe got destroyed.
I definitely wanted to cut that dreadful sand monster, and by doing that lots of other stuff needed to be cut. The train chase was cool and does explain the Pike’s spice trade, but the sequence was far too long and then you really need to explain how they get the bikes.
I did consider keeping the scene where he makes his Gaffi stick, but again it made the sequence too long.
The Fenec/Boba scenes and Slave 1 capture was in the edit until the very end, but I finally made a decision to cut them and add them
into my Mando 1 and Mando 2 edits to be released soon. Going to the sarlacc to find his armour never made sense to me, so I never intended to include that.

Finally the assassin scene. I did cut a little out, including the slo-Mo of Boba and the the electro staff. I’ll look at trimming it more for V2.

Again thanks for the input. Hopefully version 2, post Mando season 3, will allow me to put the icing on the cake! 😊

@smudger9 Wow! That was almost as good as I think the Book of Boba Fett can get! I think you’ve done an awesome job maintaining Boba Fett’s character (given the source material) and the flow of the whole movie is great!

I found the transition of the Mando’s star fighter flight into him being recruited by Fennec to be a touch clunky (nothing to do with the editing per say just the two shots being joined, I think the colour tone of them is a bit too similar and the cut seems a bit abrupt). I’d also cut down a lot of Grogu’s training as I think after the climax with the big fight, it seems to drag a bit (similar problem to the end of Force Awakens IMO). I’d think you could afford to lose a lot of Grogu’s training as it does feel quite fan servicey and in the context of your movie, I think its a bit too detached from the overall story. I do much prefer Grogu being absent from that end fight and the decision being placed at the end!

I think you’ve done an incredible job here smudger! Really looking forward to your rereleased versions of Mando ep1 + 2. Glad you got to release the edit! I’ll be keeping an eye on your work! I loved it! 😄

Thanks for the review.

I totally see your point about the starfighter transition. It’s that way because I took out the space scenes to use for when Mando leaves Tattooine. I tried putting the Cob Vanth v Pykes scene in between but it affected the flow of the rest of the movie.

The Luke-Grogu stuff is difficult. There is some great material there but, as you say, it all just feels tacked on at the end. However, that is probably a better alternative to having the movie derailed half way through. I’m kinda hoping that I can remove it completely and use it as the opening scene of episode IV, but I’ll have to see how Mando season 3 plays out first!

The New Republic EP1: A Vergence in the Force 4K (The Mandalorian Season 1 Edit) [V4 RELEASED]
Time

Apologies for the radio silence, I’ve been busy recently. I’ve now managed to complete and release Episode 3, so can go back and update episodes 1 and 2.

For episode 1 I’ve added in the extended scene of Boba approaching the wounded Fennec and added in their post-modification campfire scene. I’ve also done the opening crawl with my new logo. The last thing I’m toying with is re-instating the Jawa scenes…

Time

Finally…… the edit is completed and available in 1080. If you want a Blu-ray version then I will render that this coming week.

Apologies for the time this edit had taken. Life is pretty busy at the moment meaning that editing time is limited. I needed a block of time to get this over the line, which I finally got this weekend.

I’ve massively reduced the flashback scenes and just left 3 short sequences in that show Boba escaping the sarlacc, losing his armour, a snapshot of him at the Tusken camp, the Pike negotiation and the Tusken Massacre. Some of the other flashback sequences will be added into Mando episodes 1 and 2.

I’ve also removed the Krrsantan infiltration of the palace to help speed up the story, remove another example of Boba appearing weak and remove more of the mods.

A full, updated list of the changes is in the original post.

In addition I’ve used a new logo that looks better in the opening crawl.

PM if you want a link to the completed edit.

Excited to see your work… I watched episode 1 and 2 with some fellow star wars nerds and we thought they were perfect.

Thanks.

The edit is shaping up very nicely, and despite the variable quality of the series there is enough good material to produce a feature that fits in very well with the standard of Mando 1 and 2.

This looked so close to final release a few weeks ago. I hope everything is okay, Smudger.

Yes, apologies for the radio silence. Life is extremely busy at the moment. Wife, kids, 6-day weeks & triathlon training is leaving virtually no time for editing. I’m lucky if I can scramble together half an hour at a time, and as you probably know when you get to the finishing stages you need a decent chunk of time to make sure everything is coming together.

I’ve now managed to remove the Kintan Striders completely from the edit, implying that the Pykes are the antagonists. My final 2 jobs are to tidy up the final Boba-Fennec flashback and sort out a couple of music transitions towards the end, which are proving very tricky.

It will get there 😃

I’ve gone back and removed the Krrsantan Palace infiltration and edited the Hutt scenes accordingly. This removes one of the flashback scenes, so I’ve simply moved the third one further along and got rid of the fourth flashback which involved the Fennec and Slave 1 scenes.
I’ve also removed the Mods introduction scene and put the Krrsantan bar scene back in. The first time the Mods appear in the movie is now when the Pikes arrive.

Here is the edited segment from the Major meeting to the Pikes arriving.

So, I’ve finally watched your work print of this edit (thank you for sharing btw).

As always, you did a great job with restructuring the show into a movie format.

In this case, you made the show that sucked an enjoyable movie experience. What I liked most was trimming the flashbacks, trimming the motorbike gang, the finale and the scene with Cad Bane, Boba and Fennec. You cut a lot of bad content which is great 😉 and I’m so happy you cut the Sarlacc flashback (when they were looking for the armor).

When it comes to what I’d personally change/improve:
-I still think there are things that could be cut. For ex: the scene where Boba and Fennec steal the ship, I think it could be just ommited. The same for Krrasantan attacking Boba. It could be cut and left ambiguous (like something that happened off screen, this way we avoid the ridiculous scenario where a big wookie just enters the palace and gets straight to the Boba’s chamber). I’d also cut the scene where Boba meets the gang - thet defy him too much in my opinion. If its cut, next time they appear the audience will just assume they ve been working for him as his street soldiers.
-I think it could work well if you moved the first scene with Cobb to the very first scene of the film. I think it could work super well as an opening of the film (though I know it’d require changing the whole crawl which probably is too time and consuming).
-I personally missed some cut scenes from 1x06,I’d just leave it all.
-I agree with ppl that it’d be better to end the movie with cliffhanger (Grogu’s choice would be revealed then in the next movie).

Anyway, overall its a great edit and definitely 10 times better than the original source material.
I LOVED what you did with the final battle. In future, I ll definitely watch this instead of the show (this or just 1x05 and 1x06 together) 😉 you really made it an enjoyable film.

Thanks for the feedback, some really good points here.

  1. Meeting the mods. I really wanted to get rid of this scene, but I felt their introduction was needed otherwise we just randomly meet them later in the movie. I’m not sure it works without that meeting.

  2. Losing the Krrsantan Palace infiltration is also a great idea, but it then removes the motive for the Hutts to give Fett the Rancor.

  3. I like the idea of moving the Vanth scene forwards. It would fit well, not as the opening scene but as the first Tatooine scene… I’ll give that a try.

  4. I’ve been toying with removing the final flashback scene, which includes the Slave I rescue. I’d still like to keep the scene of him gunning down the Speed Bike gang because its a crucial plot point, so I’ll have to add that bit elsewhere.

Great work as always and thank you for sharing your workprint.

I’m left with one major thought:

This is probably just my preference, but I feel like it would be more compelling to end the film with Grogu trying to make his decision. The resolve afterward of him in the ship with Mando just comes too quickly (not your fault — just what you have to work with). Plus, the suspenseful ending could be intriguing.

I know that we don’t know what to expect in the coming season, but one way or another, we will see Grogu end up with Mando, so his decision will be apparent in the next film. Also, the current closing shot could very well be used in that film.

Even if we were never to get another season, I still find that ending to be the most interesting and thought-provoking.

Just my thoughts

Thank you again for the chance to view in advance. I look forward to the finished product!

This is something I’ve debated. The reason I put the scene of Grogu and Mando reunited at the end is because I didn’t want such a crucial event happening off screen and being explained in the opening crawl of the next movie. However, I agree that it feels better to have the movie end with this matter unresolved.

Wow wow wow. Smudger you are amazing at this. I had a blast watching this, honestly the 3 hour flew past. Actually seeing how the Mandalorian arc can be weaved through the entire movie gives me great hope for the edit. I feel all the small choices you made on what scenes to cut were very effective too. I personally enjoy the softer side of Boba Fett from the show (others disagree), but you created a real middle ground that comes to a head when his ‘angle’ is called out by Cad Bane; its really neat. The choice to move Mandos encouter with Ashoka and Grogu’s choice to the end of the film was perfect, it feels a lot more rewarding as the epilogue to the main story (instead of it being squeezed in during act 2). The cut between Grogu in the temple to being in the ship was also pretty fun, very creative stuff.

Since I understand this is a workprint I have a few pointers for the fianl cut 😃

Part 1:
. I would recommend colour correcting the opening shot of the film so it will blend better with the starfield (I can imagine opening shots are a pain in the arse)
. at 1:12 the aspect ratio changes a few times between the Wookie with a hard-to-spell name and Boba Fett
. In my opinion, there were too many shots of Boba Fett’s face during the flashback scenes (e.g. when Fennec was introduced). I understand there was a time jump but the white flash does the job.

Part 2:
. When Mando first flys the N1, the final shot of the fighter is jarring when it transitions into it landing (since there are two shots of a ship back to back, flying in different directions). The shot of Mando in the cockpit works well when transtioning in the landing shot.
. At 21:30, I reccomend cutting the droids line before the explosion, maybe even him holding it up in the first place. It comes off too comical for the tone it needs. I may even reccomend moving the Cade Bane scene in between the explosion and when Boba arrives to see the wreckage, so it works better timing wise.
. At 25:41 there is no audio transition
. At 1:13:30 you accidentally left the previous shot of Mando before the transition.

But apart from that and I think a few flickers of frames from removed scenes, this was edited beautifully. I do however, echo the sentiments of WitchDR ans STF78. With the completed story peaced together the way it is, the flashbacks don’t feel like they have a place anymore. Not your fault at all, you effectively chose the scenes that would best enchace Boba’s story. The problem with the flashabacks was that they felt fan-editty before they were even touched by you. I reckon the one flashback of Boba crawling out of the Sarlaac would be enough; it shows us why Boba needed the Bacta for healing and it’s the fan service moment the EU fans wanted to see in live action.

Overall, amazing stuff, we get lots of good Star Wars content pulled from this structurely confusing show and its thanks to your talents. I am planning to do a Smudger Mando marathon on May 4th along with the Depsecialized trilogy, but I couldn’t help watching this early and giving my thoughts 😉

I also would like to show off a custom opening inspired from your edit. I always thought the idea of using some of the concept art along with a crawl like yours would be a neat alternative. I hope you like it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1S_fx_OOy-dPgDKMhhaPj0ZOHsuNYFG2o/view?usp=sharing

Thanks

  1. The opening pan is still a rough cut.

  2. I’ll hunt down those aspect ratio anomalies.

  3. You’re not the first to comment on the N1 scene!

  4. Quite a few of the audio transitions haven’t been finished yet.

  5. The aspect ratio issue is because I’ve used a few zoomed shots to cut out peripheral elements. That will be corrected.

  6. The shot of Mando at 1:30 needs trimming to remove Ahsoka. It is to show than Mando is actually still on the planet and is watching Grogu.

  7. The damn flashbacks!!!

  8. Loved your opening, particlarly the way you produced a custom concept image of the ring world and cross dissolved it to the real thing!

You’ve done a great job restructuring the show and making the Mando and Boba storylines interweave. Overall I enjoyed it and I know there are still a few bits & pieces you’re still working on, but it does feel a little like there is too much packed in. The main issue in that respect is probably the flashbacks, so the dilemma is whether to remove them (except the initial sarlacc escape) and any subsequent references to who killed the Tuscans. My preference would be their removal, along with a few of the present day scenes such as the emotional rancor stuff with Danny Trejo, perhaps trim Luke/Grogu with the floating frogs and the scenes in the hangar when he gets the Naboo fighter (like the rodent thing they chase & shoot). I think that would allow for a tighter viewing experience. Beyond that, there seemed to be a strange shot of Mando’s helmet just before the scene cuts to Luke & Grogu in the Jedi Temple that get out of place, and the wipe transition after the bombing felt a little quick. Overall, for the quality of what you had to work with, you’ve excelled yet again!

There is a lot to pack in and its been a struggle to condense it into one movie. The flashbacks are the main issue but unfortunately they do provide a lot of context for Boba and without at least some of them, its difficult to understand his motivations.
The Danny Trejo scene really needs to stay, otherwise it makes Boba arriving on the Rancor seem completely out of the blue.
The shot of Mando’s helmet has been fixed.

Alright here’s a couple of things after watching through your work print!

You’ve done a wonderful job of blending in Din’s plotline throughout. While I found the show to be pretty meh, the Din parts were great. So them being more sprinkled throughout the whole thing definitely improves it.

Din telling the Armorer he got the Beskar Spear from a Jedi creates a plot hole with your second movie edit. You removed Ashoka giving it to him, so now we have to imply that she did that off screen, or Din ran into another Jedi before going to Tython or before he met Ashoka… which obviously doesn’t work. While this isn’t a huge thing, I think removing the line of receiving it from a Jedi is the best option. I could see this causing confusion for someone going in blind and just watching these edits.

I do feel like too much of the Fett flashbacks are cut. We get too little of his life with the Tusken’s to make his connection to them feel real. No build up to the “biker gang” attacking the village also makes it come out of nowhere and makes it feel like we are missing stuff. I’m still on the side of thinking the Fett flashbacks would fit better being in chronological order as a “B” plot in the Mando movies, since I feel they just bog the pacing down of the current plotlines… even in a massively trimmed fashion like this. This would also allow for less “Bacta Boba” scenes sprinkled throughout, which just push that weak Boba Fett angle that the show suffers from.

The cut from Din trying out his new ship is a little rough. I know you have to remove the New Republic X-wing pilots, since you removed most of their plot in your second movie. I’d have to re-look at the original scene… but maybe keep a little bit of Din hovering above the planet, or just cut him climbing the atmosphere all together.

The Cad Bane “Fennec Shand” line is great way to have him acknowledge her which was a problem I had with the edit I posted a few pages back. Glad you decided to make Boba Fett the one to come to the conclusion to not fight instead of Fennec.

I love that you removed the Majordomo negotiation scene all together. Also so happy to see the chase scene gone, I didn’t even notice its absence in the watch trough lol!

Thanks for the feedback. Some great points there.

  1. The Beskar spear… Yes this is a pattern I’m noticing with Filoni that has carried on from Rebels. A scene that can be easily cut when creating a movie, suddenly becomes important! It was a difficult decision to cut the Ahsoka/Mando battle scene, and I have a feeling the Ahsoka/Thrawn subplot will be referenced in the Ahsoka series, so I’ll make a V2 of Search for the Jedi with those scenes put back in.

  2. The flashbacks… This is the thing I’ve found most difficult with the edit. I’ve tied to put in as little as I needed because I dont like a lot of the flashbacks and I don’t want them to distract from the main plot. I’ll have another ponder over whether I can put some of the flashback content into V2 of Search for the Jedi and V3 of A Vergence in the Force.

  3. I’ll look at the Naboo Straighter scene again to see if I can make it better.

  4. Glad you didn’t notice the speeder chase was missing… took a lot of work to get that removed!

I’m thinking that the entire epilogue with Din meeting Luke and Ahsoka might be better saved for a fanedit of Mando season 3; it’s completely separate from the main plot of the whole film. Just my opinion of course.

I totally agree. However, until we get season 3 I’ll leave it at the end of this movie because it does mean the movie starts and ends with Din’s journey.

I’ve now edited together the final battle. I’ve cut Grogu and the Majordomo (which will allow me to completely remove the dreaded vespa chase) and it works really well. The audio is done except for the two music transitions into and out of the sequence, which I will re-score later.

Here is the link if you want to view it.

Just watched the final battle edit and it looks great. My only comment would be that the conversation in the first scene with Cad Bane, the mayor, and the head of the pyke syndicate jars slightly without the scene of Cad Bane visiting Freetown, particularly the line from the mayor “did you convince the marshall to stay neutral”. If you cut that line and just had the Mayor responding to Cad Bane’s line “you won’t have to worry about Freetown” with “good I want this over as soon as possible” it removes some of the awkwardness of never seeing the “convincing” that occurs between Bane and Vanth and leaves a bit of mystery ready for the reveal that Cad Bane had shot the Marshall for when he’s talking with Boba Fett later. Just a thought.

Great idea, I’ll take a look at that.

I’ve finally got a completed first cut done with nearly all of the sound transitions completed. It weighs in at 2h 55mins, which isn’t too bad considering the work it has to do!.

Its become obvious that this edit is actually Mando Ep3, so I’ll present it as such. The title I’ve gone with is “A New Path” because Mando, Grogu and Boba all choose unexpected directions - Mando leaves the covert, Grogu leaves the Jedi and Boba leaves Bounty Hunting. The logo colour I’ve chosen is “Boba green” to acknowledge that its all from the Book of Boba.

This probably means getting rid of the opening scene of Boba killing Bib and instead opening with Mando. I’ll then cut to Boba in his Bacta tank and the flashbacks will be the story of his survival and rise, with the final flashback showing him taking Jabba’s throne.

I’ll need to watch the cut again in full, but if anyone is interested in seeing the current cut I’ll be able to provide a link next week. PM me.

Looks great, do wish that it would be possible to remove even more of the mods scenes. But that seems like it would be very difficult/impossible.

And there would be no footage left! I had to leave in a bit more of the mods/freetowners side of the battle than intended because a large chunk of the Mando side was cut to remove Grogu, Pelli & the Majordomo.

Looking great smudger!

Like szopman said above I do think it could use some trimming of the dialogue. Something I’d really like to see in the edit is less “smart Fennec -stupid Boba”. I hate that Fennec always has to talk him in the right direction. It just further drives the wedge in his past self being the most fearsome bounty hunter, when he constantly makes stupid moves. You should try removing Fennec talking Boba out of attacking Bane in that scene. Just have him make the smart decision of being more calculated when going against Bane, instead of external forces motivating him to be.

Good idea about the Fennec/Boba dialogue. I’ll see how it feels when I watch the full edit. I agree it makes Boba look weaker, but I like that it adds something to the Fennec-Boba relationship.
