Mando EP3: A New Path (A Book of Boba Fett Edit) [RELEASED]
Time

Josanael said:

Hi smudger9,

Wow, this edit really saved The Book of Boba Fett for me! This is now my go to for Mando ‘season 2.5’ for sure.

It feels like it was always meant to be this way (although it probably wasn’t) and makes the story so so much better set up. Besides the obvious cuts, that favor the edit - less of the mods, less of Boba’s incompetence as a gangster boss - I really like the back and forth between the Din and Boba storylines. Especially the choice to open and close the movie with Din makes it more like a Mandalorian movie, where Boba plays an important part than the half-assed Boba Fett show that midway decides to follow Din again, because he’s more interesting.

Although I liked the integration of Grogu in the final battle in the original, I agree that it flows better to not have him there. And maybe his powers were a little bit too strong in that fight in the first place. Anyways, I would’ve never imagined that Grogu could be cut out soo seamlessly - I even opened the original a few times to check, what you have done to make it look this smooth! 😃 The ending was expertly crafted as well. The decision to put Grogu’s jedi training to the end and then end the movie felt super satisfying.

Awesome work!

Wow. Looks like you binge-watched the whole trilogy! Strong work.

Whilst this isn’t the best of the three movies, it was by far the most satisfying because the series itself wasn’t great.

It was a lot of fun weaving Din and Boba’s stories and then bringing them together for the finale.

Removing Grogu from the final battle was probably my most time consuming editing endeavour. I persevered because it made for a much better story to move the Luke scenes to the end. The result was definitely acceptable, but there are some cuts that aren’t quite perfect. The music edits were also tricky!

Thanks again for the feedback.

Mando EP2: Search for the Jedi [V2 RELEASED]
Time

Hi smudger9,

great edit again! Although my heart would’ve wanted to keep the battle between Ahsoka and the Magistrate and the entirety of the mission on Morak, after having watched your edit I definitely understand the reasoning. It’s a little bit odd how the season itself again and again finds reasons for Din to be sidetracked, something I didn’t notice that much when watching the season week after week when it aired. But especially the beloved chapter 15 has only the purpose to find Moff Gideon’s coordinates, so I guess that’s not really a lot in terms of the broader storyline.

I’m especially impressed how your cutting choices from Mando episode 1 to 2 align. This is true for the Mayfeld storyline (introduction in Episode 1 was cut and then the mission on Morak) and the reappearing Mythrol (chapter 1 and chapter 12 cut in their respective edits). For someone without knowledge of the original series this would work really smoothly, I suspect. Speaking of chapter 12 (‘the siege’) cut, the cloning lore might be important for later seasons, but this was such a short bit in the whole episode, that it probably will be possible to recap that when it comes up again.

One thing that bugs me a little bit is the story behind the beskar spear. When the Razorcrest is destroyed and only the spear survives it seems like something important, that is not really explained. Maybe it just bugs me because I know the story behind the spear and the hypothetical first time viewer wouldn’t notice anything off. But I was wondering if the scene where the Magistrate hands Din the spear could be reinstated with cutting off after the line ‘kill the Jedi and it’s yours’. The assumption then could be, that it’s some kind of payment up front - although probably unusal for her character - or the tool to do the killing, since Din mentioned how hard it is to kill a Jedi.

On the technical side I, too, noticed the sound problems in loud scenes. For example at 1:46:10, but the whole battle before and after this suffers in varying degrees from the problem. The ending at 2:36:20 is another example, where the sound gets muddy.

But again: I really enjoyed this, awesome work! 😃

Many thanks.

The sound issue has been mentioned before. It’s not present on Final Cut, so I’m not sure how it’s happened. I’ll try re-rendering to see if it solves it.

This season was much more difficult than season 1, as you say, due to the weekly quest structure. I had to make some really difficult cuts that have more of an impact on the story than I would have liked.

If the cloning story is picked up I don’t think it will be a problem, however the Beskar spear really isn’t satisfactory. I have an edit where the Corvus battle is included, but I don’t like the pacing. Once Mando season 3 is done I’ll revisit this episode to see if I can improve it.

The New Republic EP1: A Vergence in the Force 4K (The Mandalorian Season 1 Edit) [V4 RELEASED]

Hi smudger9,

as others said before me: Very well made edit! Alhtough I’m a huge fan of Mandalorian Season 1, I really liked what you did with it.
I always liked the opening sequence with the Mythrol, but I totally agree, that it’s not necessary to include in the story. Same goes for other parts that were cut - overall the story flows really well that way!

The inclusion of the Jawas and therefore the longer Mudhorn sequence adds the needed bonding time for Mando and Grogu, something I felt was missing in previous versions of this edit. Also special thumbs up for the Boba Fett scenes. The inclusion here feels really natural and gives a better feeling of where Boba is at that time. I think the payoff in Mandalorian episode 3 therefore is a lot better, since we follow Boba much earlier in your edits.

Awesome work, highly recommended!

Thanks for the feedback. Always very much appreciated!

Smudger9's Andor Movie Series [EP1, EP2 & EP3 Released: 4K; 5.1 Audio] [EP4 WIP]
Time

Here is the summary of the edit with a list of the changes. There were a lot, so minor changes have not been listed.

The edit is split into 3 acts.

 1. Moralana Murder & Escape from Ferrix
 2. Rebel Camp/Deedra’s Investgations/Mothma’s Plans
 3. Heist & Aftermath

The overall goals of the edit are:

 1. Use the classical 3 act structure, with a slower paced second act.
 2. Generally speed up the pacing. Achieved by cutting scenes that do not drive the plot forwards and editing individual scenes to remove excess dialogue.
 3. Remove the sister storyline.
 4. Minimise the use of Kenari flashbacks - those that remain are there to explain Cassian and Maarva’s relationship.
 5. Give Deedra and Mon Mothma’s arcs more focus and progression by altering the order of their scenes and using scenes from Episode 7.
 6. Reduce focus on Syril - his investigations have been removed, as have his scenes on Coruscant. His arc will be developed in Episode 2.
 7. Remove unneccesary profanity and suggested sex acts - not very Star Warsy!

Specific Changes

Opening (1 min)
Star Wars opening Logos.
Custom opening text sequence using Andor Logo with Main Theme and Pre-Mor Shakedown

Episode 1: (33mins cut to 18mins)
Trim Cassian walking sequence to the Leisure Zone.
Completely cut Brothel Scene by transitioning from Cassian Walking towards the Brothel to him walking away from Brothel.

Add wipe between ship leaving Morlana and Ferrix.
Trim B2’s journey to Cassian including cutting the “dogs”.
Trim first flashback scene of ship crashing.
Edit B2’s lines so that only Brasso came by the house the previous night.
Edit and shorten the sequence of Cassian walking to meet Brasso.
Shorten Cassian’s description of his alibi to Brasso.
Cut Brasso’s elaboration of the nights events.
Cut Corporate Security Headquarters scene where Syril discusses the Murders with his superior - Cassian walks from Brasso into the Garage to meet Bix.
Shorten Cassian-Bix conversation to remove references to Cassian having the Starpath for a while, and references to Bix buying the Starpath.

Honestly an ingenious way of cutting out the brothel and the sister plot line all together by stitching the “him arriving and him leaving” scenes together. Also good call on the crawl, I don’t think it was a good fit for the show.

Can’t wait to check this out!

Thanks.

I’ve had a very productive day and think I’ve got a satisfactory, non-saga intro.

Here is a link to anyone that fancies checking it out. It also includes the first 15mins of the edit.

Not much left to do now… just the closing credits, chapter markers and a final watch-through.

So this project is pretty much complete.
The edit itself is finished, weighing in at 2h 46mins, spanning the first 7 episodes.
All that is left to do is sort out the opening sequence. I’m floating the idea of moving away from the saga opening crawl and going with an opening similar to Solo, with a static “crawl” and the Andor logo from the series.

The other little decision to make is whether to include any of the opening Morlana sequence. As it stands the edit opens on Ferrix with the events on Morlana explained in the opening titles.

However, I’ve just put together a very shortened sequence which completely cuts out the brothel. The opening titles would explain that Andor is there to meet a buyer for the Starpath. Let me know what you think.

Here is my edit of the Book of Boba Fett. With Din Djarin’s story being a surprise feature and the Boba portions being a bit disappointing with a lot of flashback scenes, I have decided to edit this as episode 3 of the Mandalorian.

Awesome edit so far my only real hiccup across all three edits is the Beskar spear. Say you view these three in isolation from the actual show it comes out of nowhere and then suddenly in Episode 3 you hear he gained it from a Jedi. Which is an event we never saw.

Is there plan to include the handing over of the beskar spear in future edits? Such as maybe in Ahsoka?

Yes, that needs addressing. I had planned to put the Beskar scenes back into episode 2. However, it really affected the pacing of the movie so I ultimately left it out. I need to alter the Mando-Armourer dialogue to remove the Jedi reference.
There will be a V2 of this movie released after Season 3 of Mando, so I’ll do it then.

Personally I don’t feel like it would affect the pacing too much it’s just hard to edit naturally since it’s in town and the people seem to be celebrating which they shouldn’t be as the village battle was cut. But it’s also a major plot point for the climax (the beskar spear) so I feel like it should be there somehow.

The problem is that season 2 is essentially a series of quests, which makes a movie edit feel like a very long journey. I just felt that the Beskar spear quest needed to be cut to speed up the plot progression.

And yes, he still talks a lot to a person who’s always been so quiet in the Star Wars lore.

His (and all) the speech is quite isolated to their own audio channel on the 5.1 so it’s pretty easy to cut out a lot of Boba’s unnecessary dialog when his helmet is on.

I’ve already cut and altered a lot of Boba’s dialogue in an attempt to make him a stronger character.

Bruv, do you have any sites that you recommend for fanedits as IFDB obviously doesn’t have download links.

I’ve PM’d you the links to my Mando edits.

After watching this through in full, I was THOROUGHLY impressed. Episode 1 of smudger9’s Mando is on its own one of my favorite Star Wars movies, period.

The cuts are seamless. Not at any point in the edit did it feel like I was watching an edit.

The pacing is excellent, certain scenes are removed in the final act of the film to up the tension and also increase the emotional payoff. Having the audience wonder what happened to Grogru after seeing Kuill dead and then getting the reveal of IG 88 riding with Grogru is extremely satisfying.

Smudger9 knocked this fanedit out of the park.

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. The season 1 material really lent itself to a 3-act movie and resulting edit was really satisfying.

I started watching the workprint, but real life has gotten in the way and I haven’t finished it yet, but I did want to make a few comments on what I have watched so far.

 • The crawl is mostly good, but you can lose the last paragraph. There isn’t that much tell in the official crawls, and besides we actually get that in the “film” itself.

 • I understand why you’re cutting the sister mention as the subplot doesn’t appear to be going anywhere at all this season and if it does pick up in season 2 the flashbacks can always be incorporated there. The problem is that in this opening scene in the bar, there’s clearly missing a transition. It goes from the two officers grousing at Cassian/cut to him walking outside once more. Viewers who watched it know that the woman comes back and tells him the non-info about his sister. But non-viewers are left with… well, nothing. Like I said without anything there it just feels like it’s missing something. I dunno if you can have the woman walking back to him, an implication that something happens with her, I don’t know. It’s just very obvious something is cut there.

 • Cutting most of the young Cassian flashbacks? THANK YOU.

I still have more, but so far, it’s incredibly seamless other than that one section there. It just feels like I’m watching a movie. I’m almost an hour into it, and it’s just excellently done. You are so very good at this.

Thanks Arabian.

The crawl is a bit of a placeholder at the moment. I want to stick to the classical 3 paragraph crawl, bit I agree that it needs more work.

The bar scene is the main issue given that I’ll be cutting the sister subplot.
What I’d love to do is edit it so that he goes into the bar looking for a “buyer”. It may be possible but I haven’t had a deep look into it. Once I go back to the finishing I’ll have a proper look at whether that’s possible.

The way I cut it in the Workprint was done to imply that he was there for pleasure, but once the security guards started to take an interest in him, he decided to leave. I agree that it’s not ideal.

So, I’ve checked the workprint and I must say - very good work.
I like how you cut a lot of boring stuff from eps 1-3. Personally, I’d cut even more, but still, good job. You left what needed to be left, you cut what bothered me the most. I like the structure, the pacing is great, looks like an actual movie.

Also, I’ve been following your fanedit career since the first trailer of your TCW movie edit and I have to say that you improved a lot in terms of pacing and removing stuff. I love your ‘Army of the Republic’ but I always skip the first 35min cause it’s mostly a boring filler that could and should have been cut. Now, I think you mastered the art of sacrificing some scenes for better pacing and more coherent movie structure.

Anyway, great job as always 😉
Tbh, I wait more for the 2nd movie, that part of the season was just so epic ❤️ Can’t wait to see how you will deal with those episodes;)

After seeing what you did with “Andor” I really hope one day you’ll improve Obi-wan for us 😉

Thanks so much for the input. It was really difficult deciding what to keep, particularly the Aldhani scenes. I’d love to have cut more but didn’t want to lose the character moments, particularly Nemik and Skeen.

Out of interest, did the Mon Mothma scenes work for you? I cut a lot out and moved up a couple of scenes from later episodes to tie them in better with the heist.

I’m currently working in a Workprint for episode 2. That’s a challenge with so many separate plots in play, and having all of Cyril’s Coruscant scenes to fit in!

I agree that the first arc should be heavily cut.

EDIT
Since we currently have The Mando, TBOBB, Obi-wan (which I have no doubt one day you ll touch as well 😄), Andor and Ahsoka on the way; maybe you’d reconsider dropping the “episodic” style and try to make them all more like “A Star Wars Story”? Or just to skip “Episode” in the title and then Just leave SW logo there and the title 9f the movie?
It d be more consistent 8 think. Cause if u do a chronological order, you have Episodes 1-3, Solo, Obi-wan, Andor Episodes 1-X (3-4, I imagine), RO, Episodes 4-6,Mando EP 1-3,then probably Ahsoka Episode I (what if its only one and thats it?), then Eps 7-9.

I have considered losing the episode numbers, but I feel that with Mando and Andor having have 4+ movies, without the episode numbers it could get confusing. Kenobi (when completed) will just be Kenobi.

Having seen how season 1 plays out I have completed my first cut. Headline points of the edit are:

 1. Runtime 2h 57mins.
 2. Covers the first half of season 1 and a few scenes from episode 7 to tie up the immediate aftermath of the Aldanhi heist.
 3. Cassian’s sister plot has been removed.
 4. A couple of short flashbacks have been retained to explain how Clem and Marva came across Cassian.
 5. A lot of scenes have been cut to streamline the edit, and many of the retained scenes have been edited to speed them up and trim the fat.

I’m looking for a couple of viewers to give feedback on the first cut before locking it down and tightening uo some tricky music transitions. PM if interested.
