The Phantom Menace -Theatrical Version - NTSC DVD- ADYWAN - NOW AVAILABLE
Time

It would only fit the whole screen if you were watching a pan and scan vhs or dvd.

At least that is my guess.  I don't own a pan and scan copy of menace on vhs or dvd and don't see a point of having one.

Phantom Menace always seemed to have a soft picture but the rental tape when it first came out at blockusbter my bro rented in pan and scan was of dubious quality he brought it back after only twenty minutes into the movie, and the guy at the store told him all the tapes looked like that.  Was a little wait as i remember for the deluxe letterbox tape which i remember being expensive and coming with a film cel and an excerpt of the artbook.

Yeah no shit! Negative 1 is taking all the risk involved and spending his own hard earned money, there never was a donate money thing involved unlike that vapor-ware project.

Things looked far too clean and pristine cgi wise and otherwise in the prequels.

I hope Lucas is bringing back the used universe look.  The beat up vehicles, the simpler costumes that look liked they were lived in.

Will we get the canon introduction of the rebellion and the X-wing starfighter, the A-wing ?

Supposedly since there won't be any jedi or sith in this thing, or skywalkers vader or kenobi, what interesting stuff is there to tell in the form of stories.  They will be just bounty hunter and rebel stories possibly. Or maybe stormtrooper stories from the empires perspective that would be interesting, but probably too risky for lucas to try.

I thought it would be interesting to see Vader  hunt down the remaining jedi, and see Kenobi watch over luke on tatooine and protect him from the distance, and also how he helps keep the location of the twins a secret including leia.  But we never got to see kenobi as a general who served bail organa during the clone wars.

Are the US versions oar, the HD broadcast i watched from cartoon network looked cropped to me 1:78:1 and not the 2:35:1 of the sky HD broadcasts.  I really hate that.

Maybe i'm wrong as i don't have access to the original ts file i can't say, could have been re-encoded improperly.

The season 1 blu ray and dvd are not out yet.  But if the dvd is 1:78:1 i will be pissed, especially if the oar 2:35:1 is blu ray exclusive.  The dvd singles were 1:78:1 so there is a cause for worry.

It would not surprise me if the cropping was the fault of the cartoon network people or that both versions were considered correct as this is all rendered in cgi and not shot live action.

Another thing about the cartoon network besides the pesky commercials is the CN logo pasted on the video the whole time, makes the show worthless for archiving on your dvr.

What can Be done to save the real original star wars trilogy from 1977-1983?
Time

I still wonder though even if Lucas relented and had someone like Robert Harris restore the oot, would all the hatred leveled at Lucas continue.   I mean i don't think the prequels and Indiana jones IV were the greatest films ever, that does not mean i wish the man any harm.  The original trilogy still is as awesome to me now as when it was a new thing.  I still have a great deal of respect for him as an artist, a filmaker and an author.

I just wish i could enjoy his films the way i always watched them, yes including the buried 1997 versions of the trilogy those are also of historical value.

We as fans may feel a sort of ownership over the franchise because we own those memories and emotions attached to those remembrances, but  star wars was never our baby, it has always been george's, we never owned it except maybe adopting it into our hearts.

What do other fans think is a star wars altered and watered down preferable to no star wars at all?

There is another dimension to things when fans have their own children who enjoy the new movies, i don't have any children, but my nephew likes the shiny graphics and cgi of the prequels and films like transformers.

Should we deny the younger generation their enjoyment out of a sort of bitterness?

George Lucas is a brilliant businessman as he is tuned into what the masses and the younger people want to see.  He has made it clear he cares nothing for the 30-40 crowd as he has always made the films for children he claims.

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now
Time

So from what i read star wars and empire both feature the 5.1 from the 1997 laserdiscs.

I have been looking for preservations of those audio mixes for awhile despite favoring the original versions over the cgi enhanced version of the movies.

Ady not wanting to derail your thread, but do you still have the audio or is the original files deleted from your hard drive ?

I think the official extended dvd's are an afterthought much like the dvd versions of the remastered star treks 1-10 were, they announced the blu ray first and i was wondering if it would be blu ray exclusive.  But clearly there are so many people still with dvd they would lose money.  Doing this they can tap both markets and make more money.

Star Wars - Poorly Directed?
Time

The irony of the situation is everything bad said about the films from 77-83 that was not true or based on circumstantial evidence was true of the prequels from 99-05.

I would go even further and add in the 1997 special edition added content and the 2004 added content.

And if malodorous = smells bad. Then that is a perfect criticism of the prequels because  star wars episodes 1-3 are big giant piles of shit.

This kind of reminds me of that star wars rocks poster.

I am suprised Lucash has not worked with these companies to put out a star wars rockband, as he has sold star wars out as far as you can possibly go.

As a kid i never would have imagined there would be indiana jones or star wars legos, or star wars transformers.

Nor would i have imagined the director/producer/story author  i idolized would have destroyed star wars and Indiana jones in as little as nine years.

I thought it was more pandeing to fanboys nonsense, the whole EU thing with Boba and bounty hunters, and the retcon of making fett some bigger character than he was by:

A.  Adding Boba Fett to Star Wars

B.  creating a bad fake backstory of fett being a clone of a no name jango fett that never existed prior to episode II production dates.  Making Fett an annoying little snot of a kid not unlike anakin from episode 1.

Now that it is too early to have boba fett and jango is dead they make a bad boba fett knockoff called cad bane with a bad accent, It is absolutely stupid, but ater all this is for non critical children who will watch anything that cartoon network tirds out.

The focus should have been on the Jedi, or the sith.   That stuff interests me not no name cannon fodder like republic troopers and bounty hunters.  The Jedi should be believable human characters even when as aliens, and the sith should be menacing not laughably bad pulling strings from the shadows like the prequels, boring.

At least the mmo game the old republic being made makes the mandalorians and bounty hunters interesting as how they have a mercenary relationship to the sith, and builds upon the mythology created in the kotor games and comics.  The clone wars cartoon is more garbage from Lucas, the less he has creative control over these days comes out infinitely better.

Yeah i like the competitive banter and master student relationship between Anakin and Ahsoka, and this kind of brings back the point that we never really saw this relationship form between kenobi and anakin except in the eu comics and animations from genndy and novels, the movies ruined the Kenobi/Skywalker dynamic just as badly as they butchered anakin's turn to the darkside.

Ahsoka is headstrong and stubborn just like Anakin Skywalker, and Qui Gon Jinn. Anakin obviously has always been the exact opposite in temperament and personality than kenobi.  Kenobi is cool, and serious minded and patient almost to a fault. He also lacks a sense of humor most of the time. He puts his sense of duty to the jedi and the republic before his own needs or wants.

Anakin is hotheaded, likes to have fun and breaks all the rules, he also has a sense of humor. He cares not for duty or honor, his puts his own needs and personal relationships and friends before the orders.

He like Luke after him is a jedi who is not free from attachments, a passionate jedi is almost considered the kind of thing to be abhorred by the order.  Almost as badly as a Passionate Vulcan is considered in star trek, lol.

Well i watched it and noticed it looked like a frickin videogame during the opening.  Kind of like Battlefront 2 only i cannot control the action, lol.  Total failure as an animation but nice videogame scene.

Seeing the Saga in order - a review by a first-time viewer....
Time

Vaderisnothayden said:

There isn't any bloody "saga". There's just the Star Wars trilogy and there's the bunch of ripoffs called the prequels.

Actually i beg to differ the saga is:

Star Wars 1977

The Empire Strikes Back 1980

Return of the Jedi 1983.

The best way we have to enjoy the saga at the moment is through the gout, otherwise i agree with your point.

To me the prequels and special editions are all EU since they have very little to do with the Saga as it existed pre 1990's. Just cause lucas comes along and sanctions them as canon does not make them canon in my mind.

Lots of stuff like coruscant is taken right from the EU stuff that does not belong in the canon series as much as i like Zahn's trilogy.

As the original author and creator he had a right to retcon and change things so drastically, but it is strictly unfair to pretend all these happenings happen in the same universe and continuity of the original series why not just come out and admit he erased the real versions and replaced them with an alternate continuity as the new canon?

I do agree that George Lucas has changed the intent and mentality of the entire series as vinh has stated many times, and he is correct in his assessments as far as my opinion goes.  And this from giving it a lot of thought and reading through the secret history of star wars.  It really fucking pisses me off that we were denied the real and true prequel films and the sequel trilogy and giving this shit at the same time as burying the oot.

This great breech in continuity that i will always remember as the false and misleading Hayden Skywalker years, an entirely separate branch of films than the original star wars trilogy i loved and grew up with.

I don't want to sound like some religious zealot, as star wars in not a religion just a piece of fiction.  But was a nice piece of science fiction/fantasy escapism in my youth.  Lucas says the are just movies, and he is right they are just movies, but they moved the heart, mind and spirit and stirred the imaginations of generations of young people.

I would hope that is what he accomplished with the younger kids and people out there with the prequels, but as i cannot speak for them only my own experience i just don't see it.  But admittedly perhaps i am extremely jaded as a fan, star wars was made for simpler times and for less critical and cynical approaches as modern films seem to show. My nephew enjoys the 2004 original trilogy and the prequels and clone wars, so i guess lucas has done something right and knows his audience and it is children.  Not 30-40 something year olds.

The same George Lucas is involved on this show as was filmed on camera saying the key to the films success meaning episode 1 was jar jar, lol. As in making jar jar a believable cgi creation.  Nowhere does he mention the importance of story or characters, focusing all his energies on the comic relief and not on anakin's story, great idea george.

Then he follows this up with the comment "You can destroy these things. It is possible.  I made more American graffiti and it made ten cents".

"Bounty Hunter"?
Time

If i remember correctly there was supposed to be an Army of mando supersoldiers at one point in during the pre production phase on empire strikes back, and then because it was deemed too expensive they made the general design into Just boba fett and made him a bounty hunter.

It was not mentioned at this point that they were clones but it would not surprise me if that was an old idea of lucas  re-used in the prequels.

I think though i might be wrong that the mando supersoldier was just supposed to be the new stormtrooper in episode V.

It makes sense for the rebels to have lots of goons, imperial henchmen, etc. for cannon fodder for the rebels, lol.

I had always figured Boba Fett and Han Solo had some past not mentioned in the films, as to why fett hates solo.

Fett hating Jedi was explained in the prequels since jango was beheaded by mace windu.

I always kind of saw Fett as doing this job for the money more like a mercenary, in fact the mandalorians are almost exclusively portrayed as a warrior race with an honor code, and many  are mercenaries.

I also always thought he sided with the empire for some reason other than the fact that it pays more.

I always figured it would have made sense for Fett to capture Luke Skywalker, since both the empire wanted him dead or alive, and vader wanted him alive.

Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back had the script feature with the shooting scripts.  For some reason they never did one for jedi which pissed me off being a fan of return of the jedi.

The new star wars site is shit.  all the old features and articles are gone.  90% of the stuff is garbage whether or not you have hyperspace or don't have hyperspace, even the magazine has been garbage ever since andy mangels left.

It is a giant rag on how great lucas is and is almost an advertisement brochure with some pictures and text.

Lucas tinkering borders on obsessive, none of his films on dvd are the theatrical versions except for the indy trilogy which had minor things done to them, willow or howard the duck, tucker the man and his dream, or more american graffiti.

But the young indy chronicles were altered for dvd just like they were on vhs, graffiti was altered, thx 1138 was altered, star wars most definitely was altered, even the prequels were altered.

Episode II and III theatrical releases only exist as bootlegs of the theater release.

Phantom menace theatrical was available on letterbox vhs and japan laserdisc but never on dvd.

Hell Lucas could not even keep his hands off the deleted scenes that were reinstated for star wars special edition, taking out red leaders remembrance of luke's father.  It is still in the novelizations and the radio drama.  Which were considered canon all the way up to until the prequels were started production and then along the way taken out of the canon. Things like Obi Wan Kenobi being Owen Lars Brother for instance were part of the real star wars backstory and thrown out the window when lucas wrote clones.

I find it almost insane to have to change the oot to fit the prequels after the fact and rewrite the saga canon because someone was too lazy to do their homework.

Now everything we were told about Anakin in the oot was just a fabrication by Obi Wan.  Anakin never was a great pilot, never was a good friend.  He never was strong in the force he just had a high midichlorian count, lol.

He was such a strong jedi he could'nt do three backflips over kenobi when kenobi had the high ground, and lost all his limbs but one in a single go with obi wan's lightsaber.

Though the prequels are not really the true story of the oot vader and anakin dual character, they are almost written by an outside unreliable narrator.  You would never think they were written by the same person as the oot, unless he wanted to look dumb and contradict everything he ever wrote.

If Lucas releases the true unmolested versions of his movies restored on blu ray that will be the last of anything i ever by from Lucasfilm.

Here is a list of them:

THX 1138

American Graffiti

Star Wars

The Empire Strikes Back

Return of the Jedi

Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Temple of Doom

The Last Crusade

The indy trilogy already got an acceptable dvd release but as for the rest it is a joke, they no longer exist unless you own the laserdiscs long out of print from before the cgi changes.

Even though Indiana Jones trilogy did have too much dvnr and was not the theatrical colors or it was missing the stereo mix of the three films it was still a far sight better than those botched star wars releases.

He tried slipping a cgi altered shot into Graffiti and hoped no one would notice, just like he did with the HD broadcast of Raiders.  People like me who have seen these historic films dozens of times will spot such a jarring addition even though the image moves by at whatever the frame rate on dvd and TV is.  I know it is not 24fps until blu ray only cinemas could do that.

At this point these other films getting a DVD release would just be a bonus as far as i'm concerned if they are not restored to be viable to strike new 35mm cinema prints or restored on the highest quality home media currently blu ray, then not only does lucasfilm miss out but the original negatives are left to time and age in Lucas vaults.  He thinks 1080p video versions are archival and permanent, which is incredibly laughable because 1080 does not even cover the resolving power of a 35mm release print much less what is on the camera negative.

I will not be buying the incredibly unspecial edition with the new special defects of star wars on blu ray, anymore than i will buy the special edition of e.t. on blu ray, theatrical versions from lucas and spielberg or no sale. The star wars Prequels and kingdom of the crystal numbskull can rot in Lucas vaults for all eternity as far as I'm concerned as i never want to see them again, ever.  I will forever and ever hate that phantom plot movie, attack of the wooden dialogue romance, and revenge of the shit.

The 1997 special edition of star wars will always be preferably to the 2004 despite its defects.  Its on film with actual film grain and true colors, and Hayden does not ruin return of the jedi and the entire saga by his creepy looking almost mug shot face staring back at the audience, at least in 1997,lol.

Boba Fetts voice is still boba fett and not that bad prequels actor.  Yeah Greedo stills shoots, but  that and luke's scream are the worst changes in that version, imho.

Next thing Lucas will have Ewan Mcgregor redub guiness in star wars telling luke about the midiclorians and the end of the film wil have kenobis ghost saying, "the midichlorians will be with you always!"

Rick McCallum has said that they hope that after the live action show's second or third year they could make a spin-off show for a character (like what? a Boba Fett show with Daniel Logan? puke!) and that by the fourth or fifth year there could be at least five separate shows going at the same time.

Five fucking shows? Are they trying to take over television? Talk about a fucking industry! Well, I guess that's where I'll quit trying to follow what Lucas does with Star Wars, because I'm not watching five bloody shows of the stuff.

To me there's something awfully cynical about making a whole load of shows of this stuff. It's like thoroughly milking the thing after it's already been soundly murdered and beaten to deah with a stick.

George, I don't want your five fucking shows. I just want the OOT restored and made available in future formats.

Are you sure he did not mean five different seasons or five different story arcs going on at the same time like has been speculated on the show being an anthology series.

As for bitching and whining i gave up on star wars and lucas a while ago and sometimes just enjoy the conversations and a spirited debate, but lucas destroying star wars is past tense since he cannot really bury it any further than the prequels or the non anamorphic gout and ruined 2004 dvd release with botched sound and colors.

I hate to restate my opinion on where i parted ways with star wars and indiana jones but it is like this.

star wars 1977-1983 R.I.P.

indiana jones 1981-1989 R.I.P.

The other movies are so bad as to be an alternate reality version of the series they claim to be, and i will never accept them as canon.  I would just as soon pretend they don't exist.  For those who enjoyed skull and will see indy V more power to them.

Wanted: Anybody have the ac3 5.1 audio rips of the special edition laserdiscs from 1997?
Time

Just asking because i don’t have them myself and i do have the laserdiscs, only my player can only output the 2 channel digital audio as i don’t have an rf ac3 out.

I remember they sounded like very good mixes in the theater, though i probably saw them in some other audio format than dolby, but not the rare dts presentation that was on the 70mm prints.

Just wanted to hear them again as an audio engineer Steve Hoffman said they sounded like garbage in comparison to the analog 70mm presentation in 1977, which i cannot fathom being true as they had lots of limiting done on the soundtracks in those days, no digital mixing studios or digital audio, when they set about to do the redo in 96 they found the original track masters that the 70mm was derived from where there was almost no generation loss.

My Wish as a Star Wars and Indiana Jones fan. George Lucas please stop destroying Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Anyone else feel the same way?
Time

The more he is involved these days he is with either franchise the worse things are, when it was just the opposite in the past.

Or if he absolutely has to still ruin these franchises at least put both the old trilogies of star wars and indiana jones on blu ray with no cgi changes, do that for American graffiti and THX 1138 too.

Then either way i will be happy because i don't have to watch shit like clone wars season 2, indiana jones V, nor do i own crystal numbskull on dvd or blu ray.

Then there will be those who sit back and watch the train wreck like vaderisnothayden and laugh their ass off.
