4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

So people would be happy with a 2k scan of the IP Criterion style with grain management like The Hidden Fortress?

Or do people really want an 8k scan like the Wizard of OZ straight off the negative.

What resolution does VistaVision come close to anyway?

Supposedly Dysktra tested 65mm neg for the effects but found  it would be too expensive and unwieldy.

All Things Star Trek
Time

Anybody else worried that the next Trek film won't  meet its target date of 2016?

No confirmed director.  And only the first draft of the screenplay was finished on August the 18th 2014 reportedly.  As Orci claimed anyhow.

No news on whether the budget is hugely scaled back because they did not make as much as they wanted on into darkness, etc.

Ever since  Star Wars episode VII was announced with JJ at the helm the next trek has been given little fanfare.

Even the new Bond film seems to get more attention.

Maybe its the lack of news i don't know.  Even Wesley himself Wil Wheaton noted the lack of enthusiasm for the next trek film.  He called it star trek afterthought.

What would have made the prequels better in your opinion?
Time

Better editing, a better cinematographer.

Different directors for each movie.

If Lucas had to write and direct the first prequel he should have collaborated like he did on Star Wars '77 with other writers.

He needed someone to argue over the scripts and the plot and general direction.

Should not have set up the crew like he was making a video game for lucasarts, i swear the making of looks like a computer game production  not a film production because of how much is put into the cgi component.

4K restoration on Star Wars

I understand but was not that the original aim of the special edition to just fix a couple of bad shots.  Clean up the soundtrack and picture.

Then when Lucas got Fox to pay for the whole thing he used it as an excuse to play with his computers as free r&d for the prequels.

Ruining 3 classic films in the process and then deciding the other version had to quietly disappear.

Does Disney ever release a catalog title unaltered?

As to a Faux theatrical version not interested, scan an IP or whatever and get it out there unless a massive restoration is necessary to save the films.

Does starting from the negatives anyway produce a much different product than the original theatrical release print even if nothing is altered?

So its the EU then that created the only illegal hunter killer droids like the one from Kotor are modified to kill.

There is far too much EU minutia to unlearn, before the new movies.

None of that stuff was ever Canon, thanks Lucas story group.  Now all i have to do is forget everything including the original marvel comics.

The Astromech blew away a tie fighter and killed a human being, lol.

Well that certainly violates Asimov's 3 laws of Robotics that George borrowed from.

Or was that just an EU thing that only illegally programmed droids could kill people?

I mean other than the stupid prequel robots who don't seem to be sentient  droids like artoo and threepio.

What did you think the Clone Wars were before you saw Episode II?
Time

But that was as Lucas explained to Spielberg was where the stormtroopers came from.  He had to create a backstory where the robot armies are not so good so they are replaced with clones.

Reminds me of the 1990's every action figure and background character had to have a backstory.

The prequels themselves are a backstory created in 1994 out of pretty much whole cloth.

Darth Vader vs Obi-Wan Kenobi over the edge of a volcano.

You mean after he killed Skywalker that was the original concept.

Vader was a separate character and not Luke's father.

It was in 78 or 79 he decided on making Vader the father.

Yeah imagine a star wars where Luke and Leia and Darth are not related.  You pretty much can only watch the first movie.

Boba was always a Mando as far back as when Joe Johnston created him they just did not have a name for the super soldier.

That's just not true. Boba was just a bounty hunter who wore Mando armor.

That is certainly true in current Canon continuity since its the BS Lucas came up with nearly 30 years after Empire's original theatrical release.

And its the Canon going forward along with the special editions, the prequels and of course the above mentioned clone wars.

The original original trilogy is probably in the same boat as legends if not worse.

Other than Jar Jar and midichlorians, what don't you want in episode 7?
Time

I don't want a scene describing that there is no light side or dark side its really only how the living interpret the force, aka the difference between the living force and the cosmic force.

Nor do i want Palpatine in episode VII having cheated death through some Sith trick taught by his master.

"Luke Skywalker did not kill me i manipulated midi chlorians to survive."

The clip i saw was dumb and unoriginal. Could have been lifted straight out of Return of the Jedi .

Now i know they are clips and not finished episodes so i will wait to review or judge the show, but so far i am not sold on the series.

Anyway the bizarre mash up of Aladdin and Return of the Jedi cannot be the entire show, i hope.

Does anyone have this Japanese Laseridsc of My Neighbor the Totoro?

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/161/

This is suppose to contain the best available version of the original streamline English dub. A dub that has been abandon ever since the Disney dub came out. Needless to say, I would love to sync this to the latest Blu Ray release :)

It is only in monaural and is on the second audio channel.

The best laserdisc source would be the much rarer US release which does not contain the Japanese soundtrack and is chopped to be in the 4:3 full frame format.

Honestly the best i have ever heard the track was on the Japanese region 2 dvd.  Yeah its not lossless but this is a dual monaural track anyway.  Not even sure if this was ever in true stereo.

I did not know there was US Laserdisc. Here it is on lddb,

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/05818/4276-80/My-Neighbor-Totoro-%281988%29

As for being in mono, is that really an issue? As far as I know, there was never a true stereo release of this dub. All DVD's claiming to be in stereo are just dual monaural. This includes the official FOX DVD.
Something tells me this dub was never in real stereo so a lossless mono would be the best one could possibly get for this dub.

What is the standard quality for LPCM single channel monaural?
