Info & Help: Looking for... Raiders Of The Lost Ark - on HDTV
Time
yes but if there are no edits to the picture surely you could replace the soundtrack/dialogue track with one without cuts or censors.

as for the commercial cuts I for one could live with them, as the film is not retouched digitally.

I have read reviews and I would have to concur that the picture on the dvd's suffer from compression and they picture is darker than it should be and the constrast was was too high.

No one should ever trust Lowry to retouch the color of there films, they did a complete hack job on star wars.

and now the color job as nice as it looks on the new bond dvd's is not what the orginal cinematographer intended the shots look overly blue hued and way too much brightness/contrast ajustment just like on the afforementioned films. I also find their "Digital film grain" to be extremely annoying and laughable.

If you watch any of the old criterion bond laserdisc releases you will see what the cinematographer and terrence young wanted the movie to look like, although by the time it was presented on disc the print was dirty amd dammaged a bit.

Info & Help: Looking for... Raiders Of The Lost Ark - on HDTV
Time
has anyone actually ever done a HDtoDVD project with Raiders of the Lost Ark or Temple of doom theatrical versions?

They would be awesome having the 2.0 sound mix and just the original way they looked in theaters without lowry cleanup.

If not does anyone know where you can download them, I don't need a link just a hint for what to look for on google.

Was a HD broadcast on last crusade ever done?

also these files must be like 15 gigs at least.

Has anyone ever captured the audio off the THX VHS tapes ?

years ago they were supposed to release full bitrate PCM audio versions of the trilogy on laserdisc under the THX laserdisc program sadly they were cancelled and never released.

and regardless of whatever anyone thinks on these boards I like the digital audio letterbox laserdisc with CX noise reduction, soundtrack John Willams music has suprising better fidelity on this release over the current dvd one.

Sure the 5.1 ambience is nice and is based on burt's original 6 track but the sound effects tend to drown the music and dialogue out.

And there was no isolated tracks on the dvd's purhaps someone could create one from the expanded cd release and LP for at least raiders. I know film score monthly released a expanded temple of doom cd.

The only expanded last crusade I know of is a bootleg CD. and as much as I like last crusade's music they cheaped out and did not use the LSO like on the first 2 films hopefully on Indy IV they will be back with maestro williams.

one thing I forgot to ask , are the HD broadcasts of the indy films oar our cropped for widscreen televisions.

IF they are cropped that surely would suck, right?

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time
phantom hourglass that is supposed to come out for the ds in the near future is supposed to be a sequel to the wind waker. I wonder if it will be a good game?

if the whole game times you like majora's mask then it will suck.

I also think it is entirely stupid that they mirrored twilight princess for the Wii. and I hate the gimmicky controller so I'll just get the gamecube version and it will be like playing a zelda as usual, as if no time elasped between the release of wind waker and twilight princess. Nintendo can never make a better Zelda than a link to the past that game is one of the best for the snes, along with final fantasy III,chrono trigger, the secret of mana. Just like they cannot possibly make a better metroid than super metroid or a better mario than mario 64.

Final Fantasy XII was overated, the ending of the story was a major let down. Looking forward to XIII supposed to be made by people who worked on VIII. Final fantasy XII had to be a major letdown because of all the people who left SquareEnix. I missed the music of Nobuo Uematso, yes they quoted some of his themes but not good without him. besides the fact that final fantasy XII happens in the tactics universe and should not even be considered a part of the series, just like final fantasy online. whereas as much as I disliked it final fantasy X-2 was canon and part of the series.

The guy who made final fantasy tactics can never top that game he made for the ps1 that game ruled. The story and gameplay were awesome for a tactical rpg.

Now i'm waiting for the release of final fantasy VI: advance.

wondering if final fantasy VII is an exclusive sony title or if we may see it as a nintendo gameboy advance or ds title.

I hope that PS3 remake happens. Final fantasy is what sold sony as a product to me, that is why I and countless other millions of people bought a playstation. that had to be one of the biggest blunders in gaming history, nintendo losing squaresoft. because of nintendo final fantasy III part 2 will never see the light of day, and only exists as a rare demo cart for the nintendo 64. They actually used the game engine on quest 64 what a waste. I will never forgive nintendo for that.

I may have to get a ps3 just for guns of the patriots to see solid snake's last hurrah.

The Super Bowl
Time
nope I will not be watching it. I might catch highlights later on the news.

I am a new england patriots fan (I live in MA).

The greatest thing for me was that the patriots and the red sox both won in 2004-2005. The superbowl and the world series.

Being a fan of new england and MA pro sports it really sucks to be right now. The celtics suck, the patriots chocked for the second time in 2 years, the bruins are abysmal and might if there lucky get the wild card to the stanley cup but I doubt it. Then theres the red sox or as i call them the red suxx. Hopefully they will do better this year became the last 2 seasons were extremely pitiful for the second highest salary team in baseball. i mean the yankees sucked donkey balls in the playoffs and still made it farther.

Now for those over the top ads, they have every year people will be talking about.

I know I'm a sore loser, yet I think it's time for payton manning to win his first ring.

But at the same time I want the bears to crush the indianapolis colts just for shits and giggles. So payton can be the next dan marino. one of those he'll get into the hall of fame but he's got no rings. HA! HA!

Young Indiana Jones... a preservation (* unfinished project *) - a mass of info & ideas
Time
like I said the laserdisc set was released in japan.

the big bone of contention however is that since young indy is 4:3 full frame for the episodes then no good, since there is japanese subtitles within the picture.

The picture mastering on the japanese box set is good for the year it was released 1993, and is probalbly better than any vhs off t.v. Unless of course someone taped them on beta sp or vhs in sp mode in pal.

if you want more info on that set simply go to the laserdisc database and type in a search for young indiana jones.

I just looked at that info on the page there again and it does say subtitles in picture, only contains 15 episodes of the series and a making of.

Young Indiana Jones... a preservation (* unfinished project *) - a mass of info & ideas
Time
the most complete collection ever released I believe is the japanese young indiana jones box set and if you can find that it will cost you a lot of money.

It's much cheaper to collect the sean patrick flannery movie edits that come with lucas talking at the end of the tapes.

they did not sell very well i'm affraid that there will not be a yound indy dvd release or a blu ray release forthcoming as lucasfilm is mum on the subject.

although lucas shot 100's of hours of documentaries for a future release. Who knows what will happen maybe a future blu ray/hd-dvd release that is interactive under the lucas learning license to be sold to schools to teach history?

Info & Help Wanted: Super Space Fortress Macross LD Preservation
Time
is not the streamline dub of castle of cagliostro available on VHS here in the states?

i'm pretty surprised there is not a preservation thread just for the streamline dubs that are not on dvd there are plenty of them.

You would'nt have to preserve the vhs/laserdisc/ordvd video either just rip and upload them as audio files if you had the equipment and nohow which I do not.

the only problems I could foresee is that the audio might not sync properly with the remastered region 1 releases that come without those streamline dubs, but there is probalbly software to fix that.

I have begged and pleaded on these forums for someone to preserve akira criterion special edition CAV laserdisc release as the audio is superior to that on the region 2 fullscreen or region 4 australian dvd's. Plus it does not suffer from pal speedup or heavy compression. (this is only a worthwhile project if someone has an ac3 rf out equiped laserdisc player of good quality and can capture the full bitrate pcm off the discs) otherwise just get the foreign release rip the audio and fix it for ntsc consumption or bear with the speed up problems and no nothing.

The greencapt project has unofficially been abandoned any takers?

Some of the streamline dubs are included in the ghibli laserdisc box set I own I just do not have the equipment to capture the audio. Plus they are only monoural so if you could find them on any region 2 dvd in stereo that is your best bet.

How awful is the english dub on warriors of the wind is it even worth preserving?

Help looking for... Hollywood's Master Of Myth: Joseph Campbell, The Force Behind Star Wars
Time
I too have been looking for this documentary for a very long time and IT is a very hard to come by and rare title, it is not even listed on the imdb.

Molto this is a competely different thing altogether than power of myth, it came out around the time of episode one; The phantom menace and was only aired once I believe on bbc2.

the power of myth dvd is phenomenal quality over those old vhs tapes. Speaking of campbell there is also a memorial piece called the hero's journey and has Lucas on it .

PBS also has many, many more hours of interview material done for power of myth but it has never been shown on a t.v. broadcast or even been released on home video.

there are bits and pieces of these extra conversions between moyers and campbell in the book the power of myth by bill moyers.

the power of myth would not have seen the light of day if it was not for george lucas. He let them film it at skywalker ranch, and even help pitch it to PBS and donated funding. almost similar to the way he helped another one of his mentor's kurosawa in getting kagemusha funded and filmed .

the mythology of star wars with bill moyers and george lucas almost is an apocryphal volume to the power of myth.

If George Lucas Did Lord of the Rings
Time
not as far fetched as you would think.

at one point in time Saul Zaentz actually wanted to have George Lucas direct the lord of the rings movies.

Even before he made star wars lucas was a fan of the books. He even wanted to make lotr movies or get the rights to it at some point and instead we got willow.

Even spielberg another fan of tolkien's work was considered but passed on the project because it was obviouslly too expensive to make. These were the times lucas and spielberg where at the height of their powers the 1980's.

george even folowed the making of the lord of the rings trilogy with great interest and said peter had done a great job with the films.

that reminds me of the fact that spielberg was supposed to direct the first harry potter film and had haley joel osment cast in the role. Spielberg wanted to make changes from the novel and wanted free reign in the project and was actually fired by J.K Rowling herself . He was replaced by the director of home alone. I think spielberg was not too attached to the material anyway. of course John Willaims was there from the get go and stayed on through the directorial change to do the music.

That is a big what if. just like if james cameron had made spiderman and had leonardo dicapcrio in it.

Gundam
Time
I only consider the original mobile suit gundam to be of any worth and that includes the movie trilogy.

as an avid fan of anime especially classic anime I put it up there with Macross and Space Battleship Yamato as great classic shows.

The show transformers obviously borrowed elements from both macross and mobile suit gundam.

speaking of mecha brikhaus you forget to mention macross as well as calvary southern cross and genesis climber all three shows chopped up to make robotech.

General Harry Potter Discussion
Time
Does that mean that Harry Potter will finally die and the fad will end?

I hope it all end just like that Pokemon craze.

Is not harry potter for pre teens/teens audience and a lot of people who have never read the books have seen some of the movies which are most very well made or just o.k.

In all fainess i think J.K. Rowling is a hack i mean I read some of the first book and the writing was fairly juvenile and derivative and ripped off of tolkien very badly in some obvious places. I think it's funny because I saw an interview with her on t.v. where she does even try to disguise that she ripped off tolkien heck she said she read those when she was a kid. the fact that she intirely plagiarised one of my favorite moments in the hobbit the one between bilbo and smaug the dragon in the first potter book told me this book belonged thrown in the trash.

Sure she's been forgiven because in the later books her writing got better and she actually wrote up some original material and plots. But I also heard a lot of the later potter books she had help writing possibly even a ghost writer and slaps her name on the cover.

As much as I dislike harry potter I must admit I like JOHN Williams Music for the movies he actually scored. Whomever had him replaced should be shitcanned.

Who ever wanted to ride a broomstick as a kid? does'nt that come off slighty gay too any of you or the fact the hero is slight of build and wears glasses and is a bookish nerd?

When I was a kid of about six or seven years old I wanted to have a green lighsaber and be a jedi knight and take on Darth vader. or Fly the millenium falcon with chewie as my co-pilot. that was cool back in those days but I guess i'm too old for this kid's stuff anyway, my excuse for not getting the potter craze. I laughed out loud when cartman in an episode of south park made fun of the potter dressed up kids when he was playing as lord of the rings chracters with his friends.

No I never played d&D OR magic the gathering but having played the legend of zelda or having read lord of the rings was like a secret handskake it made you cool. That pretty much dates me though As I was born in 1978 and grew up in the eighties . So yeah Transformers were cool, Thundercats were cool, he man was cool, star wars was cool etc, etc.

even though all or most of those things have gone by the wayside the original star wars trilogy is still king in my book even for someone a couple years away from being 30 years old.
And yes lord of the rings is the best book ever written never mind fantasy and will never ever be topped by anything, at least for me.

You can leave all the hack work to rowling and dan brown i'll keep my tolkien. peace.

Any how at least adm's versions of the movies make them at least tolerable to somewhat good.

To be fair I shoud have said "phonomenon" not "fad" but I still don't get it's popularity here in the unites states or abroad.

I do like how It incorreges listeracy in the young people of the world though especially children even though I find it to be lacking in most points as a piece of fiction. It incorreges young peope to dream and teaches them values myths etc yada, yada yada.

I also like the fact that a woman can finally be sucessfull at what in previous centuries was a man's job, the Job of fantasy storyteller or bard. Especially since she was poor and destitute and homeless living at the train depot and Is most likely the richest author ever to have lived, impressive.

the harry potter series does help bridge generations though I can talk to kid's who like and read the books and have them discuss the themes motives and myths and I can talk about the silmilarities to star wars and lord of the rings and were all happy!

My nieces and nephew are still too young to read the books hopefully when there old enough they will.

I don't know though my sister who is a strict christian mother might think they will be taught withcraft by the books. I have a feeling they will be forced to read the narnian books and not be allowed to read harry.

I will most likely get my nephew into lord of the rings and the hobbit though because he is very like minded. he love's transformers now and lego.

A Song of Ice and Fire
Time
you are thinking of something completely different altogther. that is fire and Ice the Frank Frazetta movie by Ralph Bakshi.

he is talking about new york times bestselling fantasy author George R. R. Martin's series of novels.

By the way just becuase they optioned the rights startrooper3000 that does not necessarily mean it will get made.

how many times was lotr rings optioned and not made because of the cost since the 1950's at least half a dozen times.

Terry Brooks Elfstones of shannara was optioned but never made. So was his kingdom for sale book. Many studios are trying to cash in on lord of the rings success see chronicles of narnia and eragon for instance. although Lion the witch and the warbrobe was a fine movie and eragon just plain sucked.

The sword of shannara could make for a great movie if only too derivative of lotr, so would a number of wheel of time series books or sword of truths. what were tlaking about here though seriously is adaptation since films hardly ever do the source material justice

I have heard that some film studios have made serious offers to anne mcafree to make dragonriders pictures.

It is funny to think that the High point for fantasy books made into films is peter jackson's trilogy of lotr since it deviated from the books in far too many ways even if it kept the feel of it intact. I have a feeling tolkien would'nt have approved some of the unauthorized changes tom his story nor his estate since they had no say or involvement.

Tolkien enterprises has nothing to do with the tolkien estate since right before his death tolkien needed the money and sold the rights to Saul zaentz for movies television rights and toys ect. i think he wanted to leave for money for his family not imagining that lord of the rings sales in the late 2oth and 21st century wouldve' made his family very rich indeed.

Not to mention that his son chistopher made a ton off of publising his unfinished drafts of middle earth materials. First came the Silmarillion, then unfinished tales all twelve volumes of the history of middle earth series plus a thirteenth volume index and 2007 will see the children of Hurin finally published.

the only other fantasy series I know of transfered to television mini series or film is Earthsea. There was the sci fi channel wizard of earthsea and of course the animated film from studio ghibli not yet released in the united states which takes several liberties with the story.

Now all they have to do is a good big screen version of King Arthur. That adapts Sir Thomas Malory.

The Hobbit will absolutely suck is p.j. is not involved in fact it should be boycotted.

he wants to make some fantasy series I've never even heard of. ]

I've heard Christopher Tolkien has done everything in his power to make sure hollywood never touches the silmarillion. I think that's too bad because some of the tales would make for terrific cinema like Beren and Luthien or Turin and the dragon.

A Song of Ice and Fire

In this series the author said he wanted to portray the chracters realistically and not simply black or white or good vs. evil but more gray.

This is a very new age concept where you as the reader are supposed to be confused as to who the hero or villains in the story are. they tried this with wheel of time series and was somewhat unconvincing.

This is why I dislike anti hero 90's ish type characters and I love the original star wars trilogy because the bad guys and good guys are so well defined. That might not be in vogue with post 911 darkness end of the world shit but so be it.

The prequels sucked and were a downer because we were supposed to root for the dark anti hero.

tolkien's hero's and villains had a very thin line between them because a christian writer would know about the fall of man and sin. although no such words were used in his books sauron and the devil are pretty much the same and the ring as the tempter. Frodo was saved by Grace because like Bilbo he pitied Gollum and forgave him.
