//RETURNING TO JEDI\\: NTSC & PAL DVD
Time
I would just like to say i think building empire and returning to jedi are 2 of the best damn documentaries I have ever seen on star wars, period. they make empire of dreams look like a joke, and that won a friggin emmy.

they also had unprecedented access to the lucasfilm archives. I can only imagine what you could've accomplished if you had the same opportunity.

Forgotten Films
Time
someone in this thread complained about atlantis being a ripoff of nadia. what about nadia being a ripoff of almost any miyazaki or ghibli film to that point? It has elements of kiki, castle in the sky and even nausicaa.

sure I know anno worked as an animator for miyazaki and studio ghibli, just thought I would point that out.

as for lion king it may have ripped off kimba but chistopher vogler worked on the script (uncredited), and i have read in his book that he got the idea from hamlet. ( the great shakepeare ripped off hamlet from a germanic source, I have read the original legend in saxo grammaticus) he said he also got the thematic thrust for the film from reading the works of joseph campbell, particularly the hero with a thousand faces.

Info: The Making of The Empire Strikes Back (Michel Parbot)
Time
it's kinda funny gary has a better copy than the LFL archives. what a shame.

then again they made no attempt whatsoever to put out the original docs of the making of the trilogy officially so fans have to rely on bootlegs made from japanese laserdiscs for best qaulity copies.

sadly this rare doc by muchael parbot has never been commericially released on vhs or even on japanese laserdisc.

i was surprised they were even able to get mr. kurtz on the empire of dreams doc as LUCAS hates gary for no apparent reason. something to do with empire going over budget?

I was outraged that Gary and Kersh had no involvement on return of the jedi.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time
I had a friend i made via ebay who was gonna do a 16mm transfer of rotj then he dropped off the face of the earth. He lived in warsaw poland then went to college in germany and have not heard from him since.

he was also doing a telecine of spfx and the making of star wars in 16mm. I don't know if it was legal issues or just plain cost of doing a digital telecine of these projects that made it impossible.

Jambe also would know of the guy I am talking about, his screename /alias was maxiuca.

Howard The Duck - special edition (Released)
Time
this looks sweet. Love the cover art and dig those special features, nice!

Thanks again Dark Jedi, now people can take a good 'ole trip down menory lane with this release. I have not seen it since I was a kid on a rental vhs in fullscreen. A nice fix of nostalgia regardless that people seem to think this is one of the worst movies ever made, those critics.

.:. MoveAlong's - The Story of TESB/The Adventures of Luke Skywalker .:. Complete!
Time
I own the LP album of The story of tesb, the adventures of luke skywalker. So I cannot wait to see your finished project, I love the album and would love to hear it again and see it as well.

I got a question though. will there be a version 2 of the story of star wars in the correct ratio of 2:35:1?

The opening of the return of the jedi album read by the narrator is different than that in the film, what ideas do you have about that. are you going to do a new title crawl with the words altered to match the narrator's?

the guy on the story of star wars album read the title roll up/ scroll. But I was watching puggo's edition of the super 8 and they have a different guy than Roscoe Lee Browne reading it and it is slightly reworded or shortened.

I just wanted to say thank you for doing this project, and I think you have done some wonderful color correction on those 2004 dvd's. who ever knew it was possible?

did you do any further audio cleanup beyond what Scotty Balls did originally?

it is going to be on dvd in PCM sound right. are you going to include a dolby track as well?

Indiana Jones IV
Time
HD can be used to good effect in some cases.

i will say the first spiderman was genius use of the camera. cannot say the same for episodes II and III.

By the way i enjoyed king kong and the lord of the rings trilogy immensely because there was actually a story there.
regardless what medium it was shot on.

there was cgi in the first 2 x-men films and i enjoyed them very much for the story.

I saw Indiana Jones III, or The Last Crusade in theaters and loved it. and ever since have dreamed of a fourth one.

By the way I think Raiders is the Best.

I will quote what I posted then if you don't undetstand my take on HD.

" a discerning eye can tell the difference between a single frame shot on HD or 35mm"

If i can spot the diffrences your telling me cinematographers will not? huh.

I posted this in the indy IV thread because I was relieved spielberg stepped in and said no HD, were going to shoot this the old fashioned way. Hopefully he can also stop the additions of unusually fake cgi, but who knows now that the physical effects unit has been sold off. perhaps then can hire the services of the lucasfilm employee, or ilm'er it was sold to.

film is'nt any good right so we may as well throw out star wars or raiders of the lost ark, or empire strikes back, , because those old fuddy duddy cinematographers shot them on film. while were at it lets add in wizard of Oz, casablanca, gone with the wind, ben hur, and lawrence of arabia. how about the ten commandements, or spartacus?

most of lucas friends shoot on film and will not shoot on HD despite his trying to make them. Ron howard, Robert Zemeckis, steven spielberg etc.

the older cinematographers will refuse to use HD, so I guess we must throw them away like rubbish and bring in the new kids who are willing to shoot on an unproven technology.

by the way i'm not attacking you or challenging you thecassidy, your opinions are your own as are mine.

But i will challenge mr. lucas for his decisions any day of the week, he ruined star wars period. Not only that but he insulted the filmakers and technicians by pretending the oot did not exist for years. Then he craps all over them again releasing the movies they worked on as bonus material on a shoddy non anamorphic dvd.

I believe history should be preserved and those technicians should be honored not just replaced by cgi or swept under the rug, by someone who prentends there work to be his own even if they were his employees.

using the stargate t.v. series and episode II or the prequels in the same post is presposterous. Stargate is one of the better sci fi shows ever and the prequels sucked. They also looked like a friggin video game. when I go to a movie I want to see a movie not video game cutscenes, or cgi fakeness.

who else thinks movie have become nothing more than a contest between compteting effects houses?

when I go to a movie I want characters and story. hollywood just does not get it and all of lucas freedom from the system what had it been good for?

is it not blantantly obviously that lucas cannot write and thought he could contruct, or write the story in the editing room during post. very, very bad. no one to tell him that is a bad idea. Lawrence Kasdan, Kershner and Kurtz all added to the scripts of the original trilogy. There was also the huycks and of course Leigh brackett.

He did not take his own advise. quote from star wars to jedi from gl " a special effect is just a tool, a means for telling a story. a special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing"

that one quote and sentance from mr. lucas sums up what I think of the prequels.

quote from thecassidy"The general consensus was that apart from the reds being a bit overblown in HD, there was not that much of a discernable difference, and any distance between the two was rapidly closing with the advent of better lenses and other technical improvements".

this is simply not true a discerning eye can tell the difference between a single frame shot on HD or 35mm. I can pick apart movies fowards and backwards and tell where the gaffes and mistakes, jump cuts have been made if done poorly. Sure the everyday filmgoer or average american will not notice, but what about cinephiles. the only reason that lucas used HD video for the prequels is one word "cost". since he had to fund them himself.

Lucas was said to once have the talent to spot fakeness in a shot just like walt disney was able to spot a naked women put in a film in a single frame by one of his animator's, where has that talent gone?

one of the reasons people do not like to watch movies with me is I can pick out the real and the fake. I watched all three lord of the rings and king kong and could tell where the cgi fakery began and ended from shot to shot. I also don't think I am anything special and the filmgoing public is underestimated for their intelligence. Sure there are those dumbasses who like movies simply for there killing scenes, sex, or explosions but I need something more.

hopefully they will hire drew struzan to do the official poster.

Have heard nothing about John Williams or the LSO's return to Indiana Jones but it is still early at this point.

At least Steven Spielberg is directing it, early on there was some indication he might not and old georgie would direct it himself.

having Kathleen Kennedy who worked on e.t. as the producer is also a very good idea. as well as it being shot on film, any dumbass who considers himself a cinematorapher knows HD video does not reach the quality of 35mm motion picture film and is not a lasting format for archiving for the future.

quote"Maybe in a star-powered crossover, Indiana Jones and Robert Langdon can debate about whether or not the Holy Grail really was a cup. "

never compare the great doctor jones to the hackwork of dan brown. They use davinci code in college writing courses as an example of poor writing. imho his books have some of the worst diction i have ever seen and way too many factual inaccuries being brought across as facts, his knowledge of history is muddled as well. Not a very good biblical scholar spent too much time inventing things and ripping off king arthur tales.

the way the character's talk, there conversation style is extremely annoying and off putting in angels and demons.

the hack work only sold because of it's controversial themes, mass marketability does not a good book or author make. I have seen some stuff on the new york times bestsellers list that was crap, should be used as toilet paper to wipe one's ass.

the movie of davinci code is also laughable is is one of the single worst movies ever made in recent years and was a black mark on both tom hanks and ron howard's careers. To follow up a great film like cinderella man with such trite drivel is beyond comprehension.

Music
Time
I like Foo Fighters and Nirvana. I am a huge dave grohl fan.

I also like stone temple pilots, pearl jam, soundgarden.

I like some of velvet revolver and audioslave.

I like early beatles. some but not all of Led Zeppelin.

I can't stand rap and rock fusion but that is just my preference. I like alternative, classic rock and hard rock, a bit of older metallica.

I guess you could say I like just plain good old fashioned rock and roll.

i am also a huge fan of the works of jerry goldsmith and john williams. On the whole I could'nt care a shit for classical music but I like symphonic music soundtracks.

New Star wars books and other fiction and books thread
Time
has anyone read Allegiance yet by timothy zahn?

I am about halfway through and I must say it is a pretty sweet book.

one funny thing about the book is the icon icorrectly states it as a prequel era novel when it clearly is set after a new hope and before the empire strikes back. Which is classic era and has the imperial insignia.

Also it describes mara's lightsaber as magenta in the book. on the back cover art her saber is crimson red like a sith's saber, like vader's or sidious.

I have a feeling the rare purple chrystal the emperor gave mara in the book (spoilers) was taken from maces lightsaber though it does not say so.

Tempest was also a pretty decent book but I do not like how the galaxy is plunged into darkness again by the skywalker bloodline.

Waiting for exile to come out as well as the first legacy comics series TPB.

I am also looking forward to a dance with dragons by George R.R. Martin and the final wheel of time novel from the very ill robert jordan.

also volume 3 in the inheritance trilogy.

the most eagerly anticipated book by far this year for me is the children of hurin edited by christopher tolkien and illustrated by alan lee. as well as the history of the hobbit.

I am also eagerly anticipating the making of star wars book introduced by peter jackson.

I am very much looking forward to neon genesis evangelion manga volume 10 from viz.

The Puggo Edition - webpage and screenshots (Super 8 transfers - Released)
Time
it will not duplicate or even read in my dvd burner. so much for promising to pif it if i can't even watch it on my dvd player without my player saying it's corrupt. it keeps returning me to the main menu. The audio is pretty good. I never thought super 8 looks so awful thank god I never bought a projector or 8mm reels. the quality is close to starkillers 77 bootleg in places better others worse.

the quality of derann film prints is supposed to be really good if you can track one down for less than a 1000.00 dollars. full feature versions of both star wars and jedi have shown up on ebay before. never empire strikes back impossible to find.

on there website they still have jedi if you have 700.00 dollars.

i have seen 8mm flat prints of all three films complete feature show up on ebay as well. they did not sell because they were not scope. the guy selling them for cheap and they never appeared again. I could have bought each for between 25.00 to 50.00 dollars. I have seen very rare variations of the ken films also a 16mm test production reel black and white silent empire strikes back. There have even been a couple of french releases on 8mm in cinemascope, I even saw a ken films star wars one. as far as I now no such thing exited. also the mexico 8mm star wars. and of course krieg der sterne the cut german release of star wars and empire.

single 35mm reels of star wars appear time to time. one on there now is faded to pink color. I have also seen pieces of 70mm reels or film cels cut from 70mm reels show up once or twice.

I am still kicking my own ass for not bying from star wars to jedi for 150.00, as it was a low fade lpp print. and i lost the auction for the unused revenge of the jedi national screen service trailer.

Howard The Duck - special edition (Released)
Time
the VHS cap thats been around on the internet is shit, I've seen screencaps. So this project will be the best version on dvd to date, unless of course old Georgie will release it on to dvd. But seeing how that is about as likely as releasing the holiday special, good thing for mr. dark jedi.

The funny thing is some of Lucas other failed films are on dvd, Radioland Murders, tucker, willow, more american graffiti. The only 2 I cannot find on official dvd are young indiana jones and howard the duck. However it is rumored that young indy will be released sometime in 2007, around the release of indy IV. No such thing for poor old howard the duck.

People actually got the oot on dvd even if it is not anamorphic, Lucas has never released the original cut OF THX 1138 on dvd, or the pre cg intro american graffiti. Thank goodness for the existance of laserdisc.

Lucas could have included the orginal THX 1138 in the director's cut boxset, I would not even care if it was non anamorphic letterbox. I saw the original version on bravo years ago in good quality too, and wish I had recorded it, sadly it was very rare to see dvr boxes in the home those days now they are almost standard.

Being a fan of Lea Thompson in back to the future I cannot wait to see the howard the duck release .

I would also like to personally thank dark jedi for Monster Squad and The Gate perservations. As well as Twilight Zone the movie.
