'Serenity' dethrones 'Star Wars' as UK's favourite sci-fi film
Time
quote "Star wars here is based on it's merits as a [2 hour] piece of entertainment and NOT what it achieved in terms of advances in movie making."

as a two hour piece of entertainment star wars mightily triumphs over serenity.

a more fair comprison would be which is better Revenge of the Sith or serenity, after seeing serenity i wonder what the hell people where talking about because i was not better than revenge of the sith.

Serenity is obviously part and parcel of the wheedonverse, so i you can take that with a grain of salt. though i would agree with critics that it almost came off as buffy or angel in space, zombies or vampire creatures huh?

Anyone else totally disregard Leia being Luke's sister?
Time
nope i'm actually one of those people who enjoyed return of the jedi.

The fact that vader is luke's father, leia is his sister makes it more like a greek epic or play.

Lucas even played up the greek play connection in revenge of the sith when anakin tries to change fate and thereby brings about his wifes death.

This is obviously a reference to sophocles famous play oedipus rex.

Expanded Universe Unacceptance
Time
well since star wars was created for a sense of fun i hardly beleive people cannot except the EU, because it allows people to have more fun in a universe they love, with characters they love.

far too many people take star wars too seriously rather than at face Value, a series of fantasy films in the vein of flash gordon and buck rogers serials its not serious religious dogma, its for fun.

i would agree with Archie Goodwin who said star wars was the best comic book movie not based on a comic book, lol

I sure i am not the only one who has had more fun reading eu comics and novels than watching the prequels.

The sequel stories though not by George now in my mind take the place of the cancelled sequel trilogy, i could care less if he wants to canonize them or not. I fell in love with star wars for the adventures of luke skywalker, not the vader saga.

Time
yeah too bad serenity did not make enough money to get firefly revived or further films made.

i hardly think it is better than the original 1977 star wars which changed movie making forever and made science fiction and fantasy films a profitable business.

You cannot underestimate George Lucas as a businessman in the 1970's he knew there was an audience there for sci fi films and hollywood was to stupid to relize it.

Newb question: Lucas originated vs. fan fiction
Time
i have the 1976 paperback true first printing of star wars from the adventures of Luke Skywalker with the pre viz artwork by Ralph McQuarrie signed by the true author alan dean foster, i love mr fosters work.

the later printings still have not been changed even though lucas in a foreward written for the 1995 hardback
edition he admits foster authored it.

that makes the very first 2 star wars novels published the work of Alan Dean Foster, the sequel novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye was also penned by him.

Where to enter EU?
Time
if you like non continuity, or alternate universe star wars tales and the infinities trilogy are good.

I love the duel between vader and maul in tales, the Kyle Katarn story they had, as well as the ones that tied in with the first two kotor games.

and lukes son Ben Skywalker as a jedi knight, that was awesome.

The vader in rotj infinities was cool, and the manga volumes of the original trilogy are awesome. even Kia Asamiya's phantom menace is good. they never produced one for attack of the clones or revenge of the sith.

Where to enter EU?
Time
well the expanded universe began in 77 with the marvel comics take on star wars, through 78 with the star wars holiday special and splinter of the minds eye. as well as brian daley's han solo adventures.

for years the original novelizations were considered canon as well as the radio drama, don't know where they stand now because the prequels made several point that screwed with or altered continuity like obi wan being owen lars brother in the return of the jedi novelization which was in george lucas script but was dropped from the movie.

if i was a new fan wanting to enter the EU i'd start with the Dark Empire comics and possibly the truce at bakura and work my way through the thrawn trilogy.

if you prefer classic trilogy era theres an ongoing comics series called rebellion, there is shadow of the empire novelization for a non existant movie, and zahn's newest novel allegiance set during the classic era.

theres enough diffrent eras, characters and stories to pretty much satify anyone, theres 30 years of comics, cartoons, books, and video games to sort through. quite a daunting task my friend.

i myself prefer the EU before the prequels bacause every novel did'nt have to written backwards to tie in with them.
the only exceptions i have are the NJO novels, the dark nest and legacy eras.

as much as i hate the prequels Matt stovers novels Shatterpoint and Revenge of the sith are really well done. traitor tries to connect with the prequel era zenoma secot and vergere.

The Go-Mer-Tonic™ Thread - Today's Topic: Whose your favorite author and why?
Time
both evolution and creationism could be taught in schools because evolution cannot be proved either than the christian view of creation. that fact that they teach it as fact is ludicrous it is darwin's theory of evolution, not darwin's fact.

I myself believe Christianity has it's time and place and that is church, peoples own worship time, at home, or in faith based schools. I don't think public schools should be the place for this debate.

Possibly colleges could have intelligent debate on it.

the science of darwins article is almost a hundred years old, and is obsolete. Plus there are startling holes in his theories that have come out in recent years. There are many other theories in science for the evolution of earth man and the universe.

an Elder at my church has a very modified view of evolution as being god's tool, he still did'nt answer my question about the fossil record or dinosaurs being here millions of years before man.

according to some history channel special we started out as amoebas in some sea of goo, then became fish, then apes, then people.

i asked my science teacher how the apes in zoos have not turned into people yet or in some metamophic half monkey, half man state. it would make sense i mean tadpoles become frogs and i have seen ones half in between that change.

I also being a smart ass said to the teacher if man came from apes than your saying god's an ape.

you know like in planet of the apes where they actually have a statue of god who's an ape, LOL

Alien vs Predator 2!?
Time
alien vs predator would have been great if they just stuck to the dark horse comic.

it's a damn shame.

i wish the deadliest of the species was made into a movie that comic rocked.

avp in the dark horse book or the movies as we have it was never intended to be a part of the alien canon right?

it was just official fan fiction existing in an alterate universe kind of like infinities.

I heard a number of years ago the superman one was going to be made into a movie never happened.

speaking of the first flesh gordon i was reading through my old return of the jedi cinematographer that dennis muren worked on the first one.

Blade Runner HDTV (Released)
Time
i thought that since the director's cut was recently released remastered on dvd the HD of it was pulled from being allowed as a preservation?

the only reason this existed in the first place was because the earlier dvd release was shit, as far as i know that's why jay allowed it.

i sure hope the criterion cut will appear on an official dvd release, but i doubt any of the special features will be preserved. I also doubt that cuts going to be on the 3 disc set. as far as i know it's going to be a restored theatrical, the restored director's cut, and a brand new cut being prepared for theatrical release.

the euro cut was never released here except by criterion exclusively and i have never heard whether or not this was appoved by Ridley or just the studio.

Info & Info Wanted: Star Trek Theatrical versions - question
Time
is there an HD version of star trek II: the wrath of Khan theatircal version?

i am excited about all the hd versions of star trek does anyone trade the source hd files on dvdr? through snailmail?

i am only interested if they are similar to the out of print theatrical versions, or have diffrences. if they are the same as the 2 disc collectors/director cut series them i'm not interested, because it's against forum rules to ask for an HD of something that already appears in a lower qaulity dvd release.

i have radix HD2DVD of the theatrical version from dr. g, and the qaulity is very nice if the original HD files look nicer thats quite a shock.

is there not a way to get full quality if you put it on 2 to 3 dual layer dvd?

Hypothetical: 30th anniversary theatrical release
Time
there is nothing wrong with the real original trilogy from 1977-1983. they reflect the times in which they were made which is not a bad thing, they are a part of movie history end of story.

it must kill george that the versions of star wars and empire that were selected for afi list were the original versions and not the extra shitty edition aka. 1997-2004.

he should have left star wars the hell alone, he parted ways after jedi and it should have stayed that way.

the only reason he returned to star wars lack of ideas and he had a cash cow to squeeze, insert any one trick poney joke you like star wars should have been left alone.

am i the only one that believes in the less is more philosophy?

and the 2006 release of the oot, the single biggest disgrace of a release i've ever seen on dvd from a film company which prides itself on being cutting edge, and a fortune 500 company to boot, what a joke.

releasing something in 2006 what was acceptable video qaulity in 1993, could there be any more of a f*** you!, bitch slap in the face to the original fans than this?

Idea & Info Wanted: Is there a way to save Bakshi's Lord of the Rings?
Time
I like bakshi's Lord of the Rings and have always wished for a fan release with an isolated score off of the remastered cd, as well as the deleted gandalf storyboard of of bakshi's site. Been looking for any or all of the scripts for ages by peter s. beagle, that would be really cool to have as a feature in a dvdrom folder.

I have done lots of research and read that some of the animation was done for part 2 but is lost or destroyed.

Bakshi has been selling off all of his production stuff on ebay so any or all pre production artwork in his collection as well as production cels, are being sold off and it's really a shame because they would've been great to be printed up in a book or used on a future dvd release.

Saul Zaentz has blocked the publication of the script by mr. beagle and denies owing him any money based on a verbal agreement over the script, on his site mr. beagle makes a pretty good case for being owed some money because of his inspiration over the jackson films.

now that he has sold all of that stuff and continues to there never will be a restoration or compilation of what 2 would have been like using any completed animation or storyboards as well as the script, sort of like ocpmovie's thief recobbled.

everybody seems to hate Bakshi's Lotr, yet Peter S. Beagles script is far more close to what tolkien wrote than what peter jackson, fran walsh and phillippa boyens wrote. If a yound teenager named peter jackson had never seen bakshi's version the trilogy would never had happened.

Info & Info Wanted: Star Trek Theatrical versions - question
Time
I have both the HD2dvd transfer and the 2 disc sl laserdisc transfer and am keeping the laserdisc one because of the full pcm sound, Jerry Goldsmith's music has never sounded nicer except on the expensive and out of print 20th anniversry cd but that's another story. no one has done a isolated score for star trek the motion picture, yet.
