Idea & Info: Cinerama 70mm '2001' preservation. Is it possible?
Time

Spaced, we’ve been discussing this, the 1998MGM/1999WB DVDs supposedly have the LD audio mix. Not sure how closely they’ve been compared, however I know the 1999WB DVD has directional dialog. All later releases have reworked audio mixes.

I like the 1998MGM/1999WB for everything except the orchestral parts, however since no one has created this mix synced up to the BD, I settle with the 1999WB DVD.

I would like to see a longer list. I think there are cropped/p&s, partial (partially open matte, possibly zoomed, and lots cropped), and open-matte presentations. FX shots may be an exception and many already mentioned are excluded.

28 Days Later (FS DVD) (open-matte)
A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (FS DVD) (open-matte)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (FS/WS DVD) (open-matte)
Alexander Director’s Cut (FS DVD) (partial)
An American Tail (FS DVD) (open-matte)
Back To The Future (FS DVD) (open-matte)
Blast From The Past (FS/WS DVD) (open-matte)
Brokeback Mountain (FS DVD) (open-matte)

Equilibrium (BD) (open-matte)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (FS DVD) (partial)

Spaced Ranger, you have 2001 in 70mm? In Todd-AO?

In the 1999 Warner DVD there is some distortion in the scene right before the phone call and I wonder if it’s in the LD also.

I prefer the directional dialogue from the LD/MGM/1999WarnerDVD and it’s a toss-up for the orchestral music, however I think the orchestral music from the 2007 Warner release uses the surrounds.

Also, I’m wondering if the 1999WarnerDVD colors are similar to the Kubrick-associated LD prints.

I’m not much of a purist, however more and more, for 2001, I find myself leaning towards, how it originally was…

My question wasn't meant as criticism or anything like that, just a normal question. I actually AM working on "something" The Motion Picture related, that's the reason WHY I asked, because I have absolutely NOTHING to add as bonus materials.

I am also interested in bonus materials. Anyone have a list of what is out there? Is anyone looking into this currently? Thx.

I don't know if this has been mentioned anywhere in this thread. But I would like to add to the first post that the first Region2 dvd of Fantasia (released around 2000) contains the short edit of the film (same as the 1990 VHS) with all the original Deems Taylor voice over narration. And not the long version that was released overseas and where Deems Taylor was dubbed over, even on the segments of his narration that have survived.

I also got hold of a Chinese dvd of the film. This one surprisingly contains one full introduction, where we actually see Deems Taylor talking on screen. The rest is the same as the R2 dvd (voice over intros). I would suppose this is his actual voice that we are hearing.

The R2 dvd and blu ray that have come out in Europe since are the same as the US ones.

Post pictures of the cases, covers, and discs please.

Like TServ said, the R2 is probably a laserdisc release because unfortunately, from what I read, all the official releases had the narration replaced. Hope I'm wrong though.

A question - what is not on the Compendium ?

Trekcore detailed a few items that did not appear there:

There are also a few other bits still left out for unknown reasons, including:

Two deleted scenes from the XBOX Video release:

   "Pike's Office (Original Ending)"

   "Kronos Fight Before Khan Arrives"

The "MTV First" roundtable interview series, totaling approximately 30 minutes

Several minor behind-the-scenes clips and VFX pre-vis videos released via XBOX Video

The six different Port of San Francisco music cues

The Into Darkness 'B-Roll' video

The nine-minute IMAX preview cut of the film's introduction, released with the first Hobbit film

Any leftovers collection should basically be the two deleted scenes, the MTV First series, any of the BTS XBOX Live videos, the music cues and the b-roll. The IMAX preview material would be covered by the ratio-shifting full feature.

Info wanted: General Encoding Question from Projects - Scripters opinions wanted.

All in all, unless you're willing to invest a lot of time, what you're asking isn't worth it and this thread just seems like flame-bait.

I'm not an expert, however from what I've read, just use CRF settings because multi-pass isn't necessary with more recent encoders.

For allocating less bits or custom encoding scheme just for the credits, I echo my 1st statement.

Help Wanted: Cliffhanger (1993) on TBS WED July 15th, censored for TV version?

Massive amounts of time (and money) were invested in preserving the tv version of Superman. I know because I contributed to that project.

Asking if someone if they could record a broadcast of an alternate version is not unreasonable. It's no different than asking if someone has a rare Laserdisc or VHS. People who've been around this site for more than a few months understand this.

I will try my best not to reply again because I don't think it's worth it, but I  can't believe you're comparing the International Expanded Cut of Superman to the Censored version of Cliffhanger.

For this instance, I don't think that comparison works or holds water and it's somewhat not fair because when you wrote the quoted post I had already stated, "Edit:

And just so no one jumps down my throat, some TV versions need to be preserved, Needful Things for example, but I'm not convinced this one is worth preserving, etc..."

Fortunately, the edits preserve time/date stamps and everyone can see this. I already admitted some TV cuts are worth preserving, I just don't think this one is such an example. I just don't understand people's mee too mentality.

Se7en: Criterion Edition preservation set

Hi all, I like DF's releases, they're really good, however I was looking into Se7en and was wondering, what exactly isn't on the 'Collector's Edition' DVD that's on the Criterion Laserdisc?

DF's Disc 2 contains: Dailies, TV Spots, Original Introduction with Commentary, Make-Up Video Essay with
Commentary, Production Design Video Essay with commentary, over 1000 photographs in a photo gallery,
original motion picture score (audio only) and an easter egg.

And this review site indicates: " It was a fabulous array of material, and the only things missing from New Line's Platinum Series two-DVD set are the make-up effects with commentary by Rob Bottin, the outtakes with Brad Pitt, the deleted artwork for posters, and a few other things (which Pitt and Fincher even mention in their commentary on this DVD release). And of course, the many commentaries — some short, some feature length — seem to be new." http://www.dvdjournal.com/reviews/s/seven2.shtml

What exactly are the "few other things" as it seems DF's Disc 2 has more stuff that's was on the 'Collector's Edition' DVD than wasn't. Can anyone elaborate? Thanks.

The only carry-over is the alternate opening, I believe. EVERYTHING else is new. That review is incorrect.

I beg to differ, does anyone have "Platinum Series" DVD and DF's Disc 2 and have compared already?

Is the difference like the main feature's commentary and the extras that have commentary, the commentary is different? I have found no descriptions that indicate the commentary for the extras is different between the LD and DVD.

Edit: I don't think the DVD is missing as much as is said/implied, but I dunno for sure, however see below. Either way, it doesn't include some  Rob Bottin stuff, which I want to see.

Seems like the "Platinum Series" DVD contains the:

  • Original Introduction with Commentary
  • Production Design Video Essay with commentary
  • over 1000 photographs in a photo gallery (Perhaps not all photos were brought over?)
  • easter egg

What's missing from the "Platinum Series" DVD (which isn't that much) is:

  • Dailies (And possibly some Outtakes?)
  • TV Spots (Or is this included on the DVD?)
  • Make-Up Video Essay with Commentary
  • original motion picture score (audio only)

See: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/site_archive/reviews/seven.html

  • Exploration of the Opening Title Sequence video clip with multi-angle/audio options (3 video angles and 6 audio tracks, including DD 2.0, DD 5.1 EX, DTS 6.1 ES, 96/24 PCM stereo, Concept commentary and Sound commentary)
  • Deleted Scenes and Extended Takes (original opening, animated storyboards of original opening, plus 6 other extended scenes all with optional Fincher commentary)
  • Alternate Endings (original test ending and animated storyboards of un-shot ending both with optional Fincher commentary)
  • Production Designs video clip (with commentary)
  • Still Photographs video clips (John Doe's photos, Victor's Decomposition photos
  • Police Crime Scene photos and production photos, all with commentary)
  • The Notebooks video clip (with commentary)
  • Se7en theatrical EPK featurette
  • theatrical trailer
  • cast & crew filmographies
  • Mastering for Home Theater video clips (including Audio Mastering, Video Mastering, Color Correction Demonstration and Telecine Gallery of 3 scenes with multi-angle/audio options that let you compare the old and new video transfers and DD 5.1 mixes)
  • credits Easter egg
  • PC Friendly DVD-ROM extras (including Script to Screen screenplay access, a link to a "John Doe" website and studio weblinks)
  • animated film-themed menus with sound effects and music

I still don't understand about the cropping or stabilization, however I guess I just see things differently.

On a similar topic which might be better to talk about, I don't understand how quality will be impacted in your plan.

For quality, what is the proper workflow for a project like this?

scan in at least 2x resolution of desired output resolution -> color correct -> stabilize -> descratch/denoise -> resize/crop?

Or does color correction come last as it seems would be in your plan?

Then ignore the thread, it's that easy!

My posts are not bad behavior, nor are they off-topic. Please don't ban or penalize me, please ban or penalize the people who started it. I'm just responding, not even in kind and I'm on topic and I'm being civil. Sheesh!

Edit:

And yes, this post is off-topic, however, there does come a point where there are so many ganging up and so many off-topic responses that it should be exucsed.

Hint: you're an asshole

I'm not in fact what you say and many objectively reading my posts can tell I'm not what you say.

Being able to reduce you to name-calling so quickly says, more about you than me and that if anyone is what you say, it's you! Ha! Put it over there!

Also, for video compression it's all about perceptional quality and if you think otherwise, then there isn't much to say to ignorance.

I'm sorry to say this Skoal but the world doesn't revolve around you.

Now I'm not asking for this so I can fill some ratio or big up my ego. I'm just a fan of this film and since I come from the UK I'm also have a keen interest in movie censorship. Now if a censored for TV version exists I would like to see & hear it. I have no problem wasting bytes because bytes are free to me.

Anything else you would like to add? Perhaps you might be able to record the broadcast for me?

The problem is, I don't think the world revolves around me, however you clearly do think the world revolves around you because you took what I said personally in that you thought I was speaking to you, and as a result you mis-read what I wrote.

I never said you or anyone else shouldn't/couldn't like or watch TV versions. I just said (or to go without saying, didn't say explicity), just don't make a new thread and ask the whole world for help with finding them. Sheesh!

Edit:

And just so no one jumps down my throat, some TV versions need to be preserved, Needful Things for example, but I'm not convinced this one is worth preserving, etc...

While I would use HEVC, it was only a suggestion to look into it, dunno why so many jumped down my throat, just ridiculous.

Either way, can you respond to my comments regarding the cropping and stabilization?

Especially if this is a just a "base version" as you say, I don't know why you're cropping. Seems like you're saying and then doing things that don't quite make sense to me.

I would crop only for a consistent width/height and also stabilize while I was at it, but again, that's just me.
