Does the PT work as a fun & fluff comic book production?

Zombie can you qualify your statement about it being cheaper to shoot on film a bit further?

Do you mean back then, now or both?

Or do you mean film vs digital resulting in comparitive image quality? I really don't know what I'm talking about and would like a bit more detail.

Because obviously there are a lot of lower budget films and indie films being shot digitally now and for the cheap with pretty good results (not film quality though)

An example: Was 300 filmed digitally and as of 2006 would it be cheaper to shoot it digitally or on film regarding everything you mentioned above?

Sorry that's a lot of questions and sorry for the derailment but you bought out some curiousity on my behalf.

In addition to your points further cost factors between Ep1 and Ep2/3 would be shooting locations. Ep1 was in the UK at Elstree while the 2 sequels were filmed at Fox Studios in Australia. Australia being considerably cheaper.

What happened to the live-action show?

Think about it guys there's like a 19 year period between ROTS and SW so a 400 episode 18-19 season series seems to make a lot of sense

Lucasfilm to 'Star Wars' Fans: No Blu-ray, HD DVD on the Horizon

Mon May 21, 2007 at 11:59 AM ET

Responding to persistent rumors of a pending release of the 'Star Wars' films on high-def disc, Lucasfilm has issued a statement denying any such plans for the series in the foreseeable future.

Ever since both next-gen formats launched last year, George Lucas' blockbuster space saga has been one of the most highly-requested "holy grails" on high-def.

But hopes hit a new high several weeks ago when early adopters started buzzing about this Amazon.com listing for the Star Wars Trilogy on Blu-ray. Such "placeholder" pages for highly anticipated titles are common practice with the web's biggest retailer, enabling customers to sign up for an email alert when the item in question becomes available. Unfortunately, this can lead to confusion for some consumers, who mistake these placeholders to mean the title has been officially announced.

Hoping to quell the web wildfire, the folks at PC World contacted Lucasfilm for comment early last week, and were told the following by company spokesperson John Singh:

"Lucasfilm Ltd. has no plans to release any of the Star Wars movies on Blu-ray or HD DVD. Listings on Amazon.com or any other Web site are purely speculative and erroneous."

It's worth noting that such a statement should not be much of a surprise (if still a disappointment) to long-time industry watchers. Lucas was one of the longest hold-outs on DVD despite that format's fast-growing mainstream acceptance, waiting over four years after launch before he allowed the first 'Star Wars' film to be released on disc (which turned out to be 'Episode I: The Phantom Menace' in September 2001).

Needless to say, we'll keep you posted on any future news of a 'Star Wars' release on high-def disc. Stay tuned...

The search function here sucks, I can't find the other quote from Rick about waiting for the format war to end.

edit: not a quote but I found this on digitalbits

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa139.html#panrep

Finally today, there's interesting Indy and Star Wars news: At the Star Wars Celebration event in Europe this past weekend, George Lucas' longtime producer, Rick McCallum, spilled the beans on some interesting release plans at Lucasfilm. It seems that the first of several volumes of Young Indiana Jones episodes will finally be released on DVD on 10/13. According to this link at the official Star Wars blog, the first batch of discs will street in October, followed by another in January and one more right after the theatrical release of Indy IV. There's an audio recording at that link of some of McCallum's presentation. Several Bits readers who were on hand at the event have e-mailed us to say that Rick also told the gathering that the Star Wars films will NOT be released in high-definition until there is a clear winner in the Blu-ray Disc/HD-DVD format war (implying that they'll eventually be released on only one of the two formats). I expect we'll hear more about this next week at Comic-Con in San Diego. By the way, the audio recording also offers some new information on the planned Star Wars live action series, as well as the future prospects for a theatrical release of the Star Wars films in 3-D. It's worth checking out.

If it was just Star Wars '77 we'd still have the Holiday Special

I know what you're saying CO but if we're talking hypotheticals here, even if it was just SW '77 that's no guarantee Lucas wouldn't have released a SE for the 20th, 25th or 30th anniversary and that SE could be the only version available to us today. Lucas would probably be just as equally unhappy with SW '77 being in his eyes incomplete as he is today. It's very possible he would be more fixated on trying to fix his little science fiction fantasy from the 70's without the other movies to focus on. And he would still be a very rich man.

Beside reading these boards I have very little discussion in my day to day life about Star Wars. I don't watch the PT, my only reminder of them is what is discussed here and the occasional talk about them with friends, so I can quite easily forget about the PT if I choose to do so. I don't know if I'd want to give up ESB and ROTJ to wish away the PT and SE.

But it would be a nice feeling though.

Humourous Rant about Lucas on MSNBC
Time

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21365041/

I guess when it rains it pours. I’ve been posting a few Lucas articles in the last couple of days but they’ve all been at least informative, this one I just find funny.

The last paragraph about the authors background made be laugh out loud, it really applies to a lot of posters on this board, well the whole article does.

Enjoy.

Edit: I re-read the title and did not want to give the impression Lucas was the one doing the ranting so hence the edit.

I'd like to re-read his quotes from like a year ago when he was talking up his intent for both series saying that television was the medium at the moment best for putting your vision out there because it afforded you blah blah etc.

He was singing a different tune back then.

And I really don't have any major ill feelings for the man it's just it's like a car wreck, the car wreck that Star Was has become, I just can't look away.

Yuck.

I won't be watching the live action series, if it indeed does happen, which at this point I can still see it going either way.

I'm not remotely interested in any EU so why start now.

Though in saying that I probably will watch a few of the 3D clone wars episodes as my interest lies more with the quality of the animation rather than it being SW related. I'm a sucker for animation and Lucasfilm's new animation studio should be at the very least interesting.

Is Lucas' 'Star Wars' TV series preparing for takeoff?

Multiple sources have confirmed to EW.com that George Lucas is coming to Los Angeles next week to meet with writers for his long-gestating live-action Star War series. According to one agent familiar with the project, Lucas' plan is to recruit several freelancers - aka "writers of real significance" - to spend a week at the Skywalker Ranch in November to come up with story ideas for the series. The agent also said that Lucas has indicated a desire to hire writers from other countries. The scribes would then disperse and write the 13 episodes that would be produced and financed by Lucas.

When Lucas first began recruiting Hollywood writers for the project as early as February 2006, according to the agent, his original intent was to produce 26 episodes before he went on the lookout for a network partner. The news put fans in the frenzy as speculation swirled that the live-action series would take place between Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars IV: A New Hope, though the agent believes those rumors are unfounded. Plot points for the series, as a result, remain sketchy.

http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2007/10/star-wars-the-s.html?xid=rss-cnn-todayslatest-20071012

Couldn't find an existing thread for the live action tv show.

So if this is true this tells me there isn't even concrete story ideas let alone scripts, which means the series should air in.... oh say.... two thousand and never.

Interesting reading about the part where it says they have cut the number of episodes to be produced before Lucas finds a network to show them to. I guess he's not going to get burnt twice.

Anything? Anything At All? (that is remotely positive or good about the SE and PT?)
Time
SE

    - Cleaned up effects in the ESB snowbattle (ie matte lines and transparency issues)

    - I do like the biggs scene in SW

    - The shot of the ships taking off from Yavin

    - The falcon taking off from the Mos Eisley hanger

    - I don't mind the bantha herd in ROTJ and the extended sandtrooper sequence "look sir droids"

Keep in mind that some of the points listed above are fine in the SE as long as they aren't the only version available.

PT

    - Liam Neeson/Qui Gon Jinn. Although that role should of totally have been Obi Wan. Obi Wan was always "you can't do this, you can't do that" and Qui Gon was more "you can do anything", which seemed to me more in keeping with the Obi Wan of the OT.

    - Darth Maul. Stupid name though and double lightsaber is kinda gimmicky.

    - TPM lightsaber battle when Qui Gon dies and Obi Wan lets loose on Maul.

    - The idea of the droid factory sequence and arena sequence. These ideas seemed to me very reminiscent of the sense of adventure of the original SW and the arena sequence is very Ben Hur-esque and Jason and the Argonauts.... just handled very poorly. It was good to see the heroes in peril.

    - The idea of a detective story in AOTC. Very film noir. Which I like.

    - The idea of Grevious' ship in the beginning of ROTS. Again very reminiscent of the sense of adventure of SW and sneeking around the Death Star. Unfortuantely edited down to a few nothing sequences and bad writting/plotting.

    - Planet designs. Naboo was awe inspiring. Water planet was cool where the clones were made, can't remember the name. Volcano planet and the sink hole planet in ROTS were great also. Visually awesome.

That's all I can say to keep things positive and not turn it into another hate topic.

I really can't get my head around the whole 100 episodes. At 22 minutes an episode, that's over 36 hours of clone wars. I'll say that again, that's over 36 hours of clone wars.

How much story is there to tell in a 3 year period. The clone wars failed to get much screen time at all in the whole PT yet now we're getting 100 episodes devoted to it. Not forgetting to mention the previous clone war animated series. Like I said I can't get my head around it.

Boo Hoo

I think it's more I can't get the deal I want then I can't find a network to show run my series.

This isn't 1975 anymore when Lucas couldn't find a studio to get Star Wars made. Like everything else Lucasfilm, George is probably asking for too much $

What's the conundrum? George has always said SW is aimed at and meant for 13 year olds, that's why the older fans don't like the PT. So let me save you millions in market research, that's who your audience is, the same one you keep perpetuating.... douche.

Oh well maybe the series will go straight to non-anamorphic dvd

And I'm sure the 100 episodes will soon become 80 and then 40...... "I never said 100 episodes, that was a myth created by the media. I've told the story I've wanted to tell"

Oh George, you'll always be a source of entertainment.

I say forget the OOT on DVD, lets target HD-DVD/Blue Ray Now
Time
I tend to tune out when there is more talk on the Blu-Ray / HD-DVD war on these boards. I see it as a money grab. Is there even a market (beyond a niche anyway) before they create one and tell you this is the next thing you need?

This coming from a relatively early adopter of dvd.

DVD was a no-brainer for movie buff like me.

Until I read this thread now, I wasn't aware there was a clear winner in the war when I guess 4-5 months ago it was all so undecided.

I'm still going to 'wait and see' for a long while yet. The first generation dvd releases were all pretty rubbish so I don't expect it to be any different for Blu-Ray. They need to get some titles out there that aren't just new releases. Titles I care about tend to be older films or "smaller" films and I'm betting they will need work and new transfers to bring them up to scratch to release in HD.

Besides I'll only get into the next format when they stop releasing this hideous standard packaging

http://www.racocatala.cat/lacrispeta/blu-ray.jpg

No different than I suppose Warner Brothers' initial DVD packaging.

A question for you tech savy guys: In regards to 1080p/i and standard dvd's what hardware does the upconverting, the latest HD players or the latest HD displays/tvs? Or both?

So...today I bought Attack of the clones just to have a complete collection
Time
Word.

I picked up on the hair thing the first time I saw AOTC. The wig and fake beard the Ewan wears for the reshoot scenes have to be the cheapest crap I've seen on film. Not to mention the regular hair extensions, WTF? I suppose it's like evertything in the PT, near enough is good enough.

Back to the dvds I have all three PT films on dvd. I don't watch them, they are just packed away. The only reason I hang on to them is, well I've already paid for them, but for all 3 I have the nice region 4 slip covers. Well TPM is really nice and they get gradually worse from there, but at least they cover the horrible cover art.

And who knows I may want to watch them again one day.

Favorite SW Movie Poll at IGN

hahahahahaha!

When I looked at that poll I thought wow Empire is on top and not only that but it's outranking Star Wars by a whole 10%............

Then I realised it wasn't Star Wars in second place, it was just an assumption on my part that SW and TESB would be fighting it out for top place. Definately strange.

Star Wars fandom is in such a weird place these days that I'm suprised anything surprises me.

CO, you've been talking so much sense, I agree with everything you've said.

I'm interested in seeing this new documentary history channel thing everyone is talking about. It might be a bunch of bs but I'm curious.

If anyone else missed it like me and can't find it on the 'net PM me.

I can't say I care too much about the 30th anniversary box set or lack there of. In my mind it was never going to include a restored OOT anyway.

And I wouldn't hold out hope for it on blu-ray any time soon, no matter who is pressuring Lucasfilm. We all know they go at their own pace. It took a long time just to get the OT on dvd and even then they were only planning to get it out on the market after ROTS, but didn't they bring it forward to combat piracy/bootlegs? What a long (unfulfilling) wait that was.

New Clone Wars Trailer!
Time
Yeah the hyperspace thing really stood out to me too.

I'm not really caring too much for this series, to me it seems to be retreading old ground. Though the animation looks really good and I'm an animation fan so it might be worth checking out for some cool action sequences, I don't expect much in the way of story.

I always thought this is the way the prequels should have been handled ie 3D animation. It certainly would have been a bold move, and George could of truly been limitless and really pushed the cg envelope. It would have also certainly seperated the trilogy's as different entities. But that's for a different topic.

p.s using flash video is lame. especially for lucasfilm who were big proponents of quicktime.
