Silly Obi-Wan ANH question
Time
No idea, but an interesting question I'd like to hear opinions on. I don't think there's a definitive answer unless you want to go to the novelisation and regard that as fact. Whatever that may be I've never read it.

For many years as a kid I always thought that sound/shriek was part of the score.

The same way in horror movies where there is a loud boom in the score after a lull to try to scare you.

I'm not going to mention how the SE noise sucks ass. Oh wait.........

2007 DVD repackage
Time
In a catalouge today for an Australian retailer I saw this in an advertisement for the Star Wars trilogy on dvd.

http://www.bigwentertainment.com.au/coverscan/570000/565151.jpg

http://www.bigwentertainment.com.au/product/star_wars_trilogy_565151_67010.html

We didn't get this (best buy?) tin last year. Notice the 30th Anniversary written at the top of the tin

The above link mentions 4 discs but the catalogue mentions 6 discs. Personally I think it's the SE's and the GOUT.

Not really news worthy but I thought'd I'd at least mention it. Another Holiday re-package.

In the fight he did keep going on about not being able to hold it any longer...weak, I'm so weak an' all that jazz.
For me he didn't get burned...Luke never got burned...Anakin never got burned, so why did Palps? If he was burning so bad, why is his hair still ok. That's the first thing to go. Also, after Mace flew out of the window, Palps got up brushed himself off, put his cloak on and went about his business. Not bad for someone who just had their whole face burnt to a crisp by lightning.
Like I said, I think it was all a mask to hide his true appearance.

Or it could just be another balls up by George.

The idea that his hideous face was his true face all along which he kept hidden, I don't know through the force I guess, and was only revealed through a weak moment I like even less.

Did he get burnt? It's been a while since of seen it, but yeah what ever happened to him didn't happen to Luke that's for sure.

Yeah they don't look that alike but the intention was there for them to look the same. They just didn't get the make-up right.

The way he looks in ROTS and then 20 something years later in TESB is the same and then only a short time later in ROTJ he looks different from his established look. This mind you, is all from Lucas' perspective of 1-6, SE's and all. Your average viewer doesn't know that the Emperor's scene in TESB was filmed the same time as ROTS and edited into a 25 year old movie.

A good read, great work again Zombie. I've got no criticism apart from a couple of spelling errors.

Obi-Wan is described as being about thirty years old and wears all black.

The movie and the PT just got infinitively better right there

My take on all this is it's the same film and plot with just some key characters decisions that improve it vastly.

The character of Anakin floors me. I really like what has been done here given his age. Though the young actor to play such a role would be a hard task. I also find Shmi Warker very interesting.

Pros:

Kenobi's age, title and wisdom. Pretty much the Qui Gon role we see in TPM minus the years.

Anakin's maturity.

Binks is slightly more serious. Still comedic relief without the silliness.

Maul's additional presences and dialogue.

Reduced Jedi Council. No Yoda or only for the first movie would of been better.

Cons:

Kenobi only has Binks interact with for much of the first half of the movie. (In theory I prefer it this way but it could turn out worse than the alternative in practice.)

Palpatines rise isn't so clear.

I think with a director other than Lucas shooting this script (George handling the podrace and the like) we could have had a movie on par with ROTJ. It still has its flaws but I like it a lot better.

From the original SW it's safe to say Anakin is younger it might necessarily be spelt out but there are the references to "old man" etc.

The various and changing timelines and ages are examined (quite well and thoroughly) in the "secret history of star wars" which can be found on these forums if you do a search I guess. Forgive me I can't remember who the author is but he is a member here.

Offically there's 19 years between III and IV.

Ep1 - Kenobi is 25 Anakin is 9.

10 years in between

Ep2 - Kenobi is 35 Anakin is 19.

3 years pass

Ep3 - Kenobi is 38 Anakin is 22

19 years in bewteen

Ep4 - Kenobi is 57 Vader is 41

If I'm mistaken someone correct me as I did this quickly.

Add on about 10-15 years and things should be right.

Definately check out the web book I mentioned above. If I have time later I'll try to look it up.

Oh and I forgot to point out one of the features "Interviews with Seth MacFarlane and George Lucas ". I'd be pretty interested to see the interview/s with Lucas when this is released. It should be midly entertaining in the very least.

George: Oh yes, I always envisioned back in '76 when I was making the original Star Wars and Seth was a pre-schooler that in 2007 it would, according to my vision, be lovingly parodied by Seth in an animated pop-culture referencing television show . It was always my intention, as noted in my original outline.

Fox Yes, Lucasfilm No.

The packaging is my only interest and why I made mention of it here. Family Guy and Fox really put together a great set and would like to see something like this for oh I don't know... a real Star Wars dvd release.

If it was done by Lucasfilm it would be nothing this elaborate. From every SW dvd release to Indy Lucasfilm's packaging and coverart have, to put it bluntly, Fucking Sucked.

"Family Guy: Blue Harvest" Coming to DVD

http://starwars.com/community/news/media/img/20071105_1_bg.jpg

A long time ago, but somehow in the future ...Fox Home Entertainment presents an outrageous look at the Star Wars universe with "Family Guy: Blue Harvest," a parody of the movie that started it all -- Episode IV A New Hope -- on DVD on January 15. The release promises never-before-seen footage, commentaries, interviews with George Lucas and others, and a first look at the next hilarious intergalactic adventure.

In the season premiere of the offensively uproarious series' sixth season, "Blue Harvest" finds Peter, Lois, Chris, Stewie, Brian and some of Quahog's finest in the middle of George Lucas' beloved science-fiction epic. Feel the Farce in the most irreverent and hilarious way possible; with Han Solo (Peter) Dumpster diving for furniture; Darth Vader (Stewie) soiling his diapers; Luke (Chris) battling against "Thai" fighters; and C-3PO (Quagmire) flirting with a 1980s dot-matrix printer. Featuring hysterical cameos from Rush Limbaugh, Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo and Helen Reddy, "Family Guy" Presents: "Blue Harvest" is "a dead-on homage that hilariously picks apart Star Wars, along with much of real life" (Associated Press).

The DVD features more than four minutes of never-before-seen material; an uncensored track; animatics; commentaries; interviews with Seth MacFarlane and George Lucas; and a first look at a now-in-production "Family Guy" Star Wars spoof (which goes by the working title of "Something, Something, Something Dark Side).

Also available for true "Family Guy" and Star Wars fans is a special edition DVD that features collectible packaging, trading cards, an exclusive brochure, 3-D glasses, a t-shirt and more. The "Family Guy" Presents: "Blue Harvest" DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $22.98 U.S. / $ 25.98 Canada. The special edition is available for a suggested retail price of $34.99 U.S. / $46.98 Canada; prebook is December 19, 2007.

Time
Urghhh.

The thing I hated (well many things) about ROTS was Mcdiarmid's performance.

It's surprising because in Ep 1 + 2 we was great as Palpatine and even Sidious as limited as that role was. But come Ep3 he was off the charts in regards to hamming it up.

And how ironic the guy who invented the Emperor we know and love 20 years earlier totally missed the mark reprising that role. Terrible make-up (not Ian's fault one would guess) over the top acting and terrible voice work (post-production voice modulation?).

I remember sitting there during the Mace/Emperor duel all WTF?? His facial expressions and grunting during the fight were laughable. Like stumbling upon and outtake or parody.

One thing I thing about the PT that they got right was Palpatines arc and really enjoyed that until Ep3. He was slowly becoming more an more evil being twisted by the dark side both figuratively and literally into presumably what we see in ROTJ an old and twisted evil man who is possibly living beyond his years because of the dark side and then with Ep3 that did a 180 and Papatine becomes the Emperor we know because of a fight with a Jedi and his lightning being reflected back at him

Although I must point out that my dislike of McDiarmid's performance has nothing to do with the direction that his character took in Ep3. I hardly think Ian would of had very little input into that at all. The cackling idiot of a jester I think is all McDiarmid's fault. Regardless of any direction George may have given him that's not the character he portrayed in ROTJ and he should be responsible for the performance.

No offence to anyone who enjoys the performance in Ep3 as everyone is allowed an opinion it's just one I can't agree with. Ep1 and 2 I very much agree with though.

Ooh what about Soderbergh, he's his own DP and uses Digital for his low budget indie affairs

That's it for now I'm sure if anything else comes to mind you'll be the one I ask.

Ok thanks for answering my questions.

I know the cameras that indie films use are nothing like those Lucas used. The camera cost would exceed their budget. My point was what you refered to in what digital has done for low budget film making.

In regards to your example Superman Returns and my example 300 (like I said I know nothing on the topic) I was under the impression that digital was choosen for filming because of extensive post production work/green screen, a myth you dispelled in your post chalking it up to producers and marketing. Which is why I though 300 may have been shot digitally.

With this in mind in your opinon why did Singer shoot SR digitally?

Zombie can you qualify your statement about it being cheaper to shoot on film a bit further?

Do you mean back then, now or both?

Or do you mean film vs digital resulting in comparitive image quality? I really don't know what I'm talking about and would like a bit more detail.

Because obviously there are a lot of lower budget films and indie films being shot digitally now and for the cheap with pretty good results (not film quality though)

An example: Was 300 filmed digitally and as of 2006 would it be cheaper to shoot it digitally or on film regarding everything you mentioned above?

Sorry that's a lot of questions and sorry for the derailment but you bought out some curiousity on my behalf.

In addition to your points further cost factors between Ep1 and Ep2/3 would be shooting locations. Ep1 was in the UK at Elstree while the 2 sequels were filmed at Fox Studios in Australia. Australia being considerably cheaper.

Think about it guys there's like a 19 year period between ROTS and SW so a 400 episode 18-19 season series seems to make a lot of sense

Lucasfilm to 'Star Wars' Fans: No Blu-ray, HD DVD on the Horizon

Mon May 21, 2007 at 11:59 AM ET

Responding to persistent rumors of a pending release of the 'Star Wars' films on high-def disc, Lucasfilm has issued a statement denying any such plans for the series in the foreseeable future.

Ever since both next-gen formats launched last year, George Lucas' blockbuster space saga has been one of the most highly-requested "holy grails" on high-def.

But hopes hit a new high several weeks ago when early adopters started buzzing about this Amazon.com listing for the Star Wars Trilogy on Blu-ray. Such "placeholder" pages for highly anticipated titles are common practice with the web's biggest retailer, enabling customers to sign up for an email alert when the item in question becomes available. Unfortunately, this can lead to confusion for some consumers, who mistake these placeholders to mean the title has been officially announced.

Hoping to quell the web wildfire, the folks at PC World contacted Lucasfilm for comment early last week, and were told the following by company spokesperson John Singh:

"Lucasfilm Ltd. has no plans to release any of the Star Wars movies on Blu-ray or HD DVD. Listings on Amazon.com or any other Web site are purely speculative and erroneous."

It's worth noting that such a statement should not be much of a surprise (if still a disappointment) to long-time industry watchers. Lucas was one of the longest hold-outs on DVD despite that format's fast-growing mainstream acceptance, waiting over four years after launch before he allowed the first 'Star Wars' film to be released on disc (which turned out to be 'Episode I: The Phantom Menace' in September 2001).

Needless to say, we'll keep you posted on any future news of a 'Star Wars' release on high-def disc. Stay tuned...

The search function here sucks, I can't find the other quote from Rick about waiting for the format war to end.

edit: not a quote but I found this on digitalbits

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa139.html#panrep

Finally today, there's interesting Indy and Star Wars news: At the Star Wars Celebration event in Europe this past weekend, George Lucas' longtime producer, Rick McCallum, spilled the beans on some interesting release plans at Lucasfilm. It seems that the first of several volumes of Young Indiana Jones episodes will finally be released on DVD on 10/13. According to this link at the official Star Wars blog, the first batch of discs will street in October, followed by another in January and one more right after the theatrical release of Indy IV. There's an audio recording at that link of some of McCallum's presentation. Several Bits readers who were on hand at the event have e-mailed us to say that Rick also told the gathering that the Star Wars films will NOT be released in high-definition until there is a clear winner in the Blu-ray Disc/HD-DVD format war (implying that they'll eventually be released on only one of the two formats). I expect we'll hear more about this next week at Comic-Con in San Diego. By the way, the audio recording also offers some new information on the planned Star Wars live action series, as well as the future prospects for a theatrical release of the Star Wars films in 3-D. It's worth checking out.

If it was just Star Wars '77 we'd still have the Holiday Special

I know what you're saying CO but if we're talking hypotheticals here, even if it was just SW '77 that's no guarantee Lucas wouldn't have released a SE for the 20th, 25th or 30th anniversary and that SE could be the only version available to us today. Lucas would probably be just as equally unhappy with SW '77 being in his eyes incomplete as he is today. It's very possible he would be more fixated on trying to fix his little science fiction fantasy from the 70's without the other movies to focus on. And he would still be a very rich man.

Beside reading these boards I have very little discussion in my day to day life about Star Wars. I don't watch the PT, my only reminder of them is what is discussed here and the occasional talk about them with friends, so I can quite easily forget about the PT if I choose to do so. I don't know if I'd want to give up ESB and ROTJ to wish away the PT and SE.

But it would be a nice feeling though.

I guess when it rains it pours. I’ve been posting a few Lucas articles in the last couple of days but they’ve all been at least informative, this one I just find funny.

The last paragraph about the authors background made be laugh out loud, it really applies to a lot of posters on this board, well the whole article does.

Enjoy.

Edit: I re-read the title and did not want to give the impression Lucas was the one doing the ranting so hence the edit.
