R5-D4 A Star Wars Story
R5-D4 A Star Wars Story
^ fair assessment , and I am willing to bet that older sources of media and content look great on it .$15 ? great find Handman !
I dunno. I’m usually a Luddite, the last on the block, etc. I’ve got no cell phone, got DSL via the landline, and so on.
But the crazy display specs coming down the pipe don’t sound so ridiculous to me. Here’s my logic on that: as consumer tech improves, at some point the technology level will be reached where the quality is SO good that there’s simply no room for improvement. And this is a good thing. It then becomes entirely about content and convenience.
I feel like audio storage hit that point with the CD. The problem of storing stereo sound was solved outright, nothing more was needed. Now, there was an attempt to do multichannel via DVD-A and that was technically a remaining problem that CD’s did not address, but the market simply did not care. It then became about content and convenience. The SACD market was an attempt to sell better-mastered content, but was slathered in audiophile snake oil. Better mastering was largely a market bust as well, although it did help fuel the niche vinyl resurgence. Convenience was tackled via digital downloads, streaming, etc, and here we are today, and CD-quality is still the reference quality decades later, even if the format itself is in decline.
Displays are another matter. There are multiple defined market purposes: media playback, static display, gaming, and they each have their own requirements. 8K means pixels disappear even with your eyeball pressed against a ginormous display. Completely unnecessary for media playback and gaming, but still could have some value for static displays IMO. 120Hz and variable refresh rates work for gaming but not much else. Wider color gamut helps everywhere, if only a bit. So, yeah, these are corner cases to be sure, but they do actually address certain markets. HDMI 2.1 will probably mark the point where transmitting video information hits that same point CD audio hit. Then it’s about content and convenience. Oh, and there will surely be another stab at 3D some years down the line, and the market will continue to not care. See? Luddite.
That’s not to say there won’t continue to be tech improvements, they’ll just be elsewhere. On the playback side, speaker tech continues to evolve, and so will displays. But in both cases it’d be about better reproducing the signal they receive, not about processing an entirely new kind of signal. I know I don’t want to buy any new displays until that motion blur problem is well and truly solved, or at least significantly better than it is on today’s OLEDs. Yeah, I’m one of those. Off my lawn!
^ I still rock a CRT Tv and a flip phone . Luddite …pshaw . Get off MY lawn ! lol 😃
^ what ? that makes no sense .
oops , double post
^well, since I am pushing 50 , I guess I am older technology ,lol . And Sony Trinitron and Samsung are excellent CRT models to answer your question .There are also some stores in existence that specialize in old technology and have a passion for it as well as for refurbishing it as the guy in the video does .This is just one such place you might find what you seek …https://www.captainedsfurniture.com/page/about-us.html
^ I have seen galleries of all of the UK covers , I remember at one point they just started using promotional photos or photos from the film itself for the covers and only did a few painted covers now and then .There was also a small gallery of UK covers in one of the US issues of The Empire Strikes Back adaptation and it was really neat to see Infantino’s interpretation of Empire .
just came across this video , the CRT tv and Vcr in this are of very good quality , he is playing the 95 faces vhs of A New Hope on it and it looks fantastically crisp and clear . I think the Faces set may be my new fave as the colors are the most vibrant out of the vhs copies I own and even pop more on the displays I own than the official Blu Rays too . I played 3 of my copies at the same time this weekend …the 92 widescreen vhs on my widescreen hd crt ( it had some dynamic colors but just a little faded ) the GOUT on my 60 inch LCD through a blu ray player ( the color grading was terrible , the x-wing pilot uniforms all had a pinkish melon like color to them no matter how I adjusted the color settings , although the image was very sharp ) and the faces 95 vhs on my 13 inch vcr/tv combo and that looked the most vibrant to me . Still not a fan of the blue tie lasers in Empire though . Seeing the same tape in this video on a big ass CRT , I am even more impressed with how crisp and clear a quality vhs can look on a quality CRT . Makes me want to seek out the widescreen faces vhs box set now . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJjNA4PuiGY
My latest haul of classic SW.
I finally got my hands on some Star Wars Weekly magazines from the UK. I found a really great shop in London called 30th Century Comics, with one of the largest and most well curated collections I’ve ever seen in a comic shop.
Cool haul dude ! I love those UK covers , I saw a whole collection of those issues at the Chicago Comic Con back in 95 and was awestruck by them as I never knew about them until then . Unfortunately , I was flat broke and could not buy them . Would love to have them all just for the extra artwork and back up features ,they would be a great compliment to my full set of the US issues
^ yeah , that looks even more like what I was thinking of in my mind’s eye .Good find .
and thank you for bringing up Mr.1B …it inspired my latest artwork which you can see by clicking on my sig if you like

^ 2-1B’s mouth always reminded me of a vintage drive in movie speaker
and both lifted it from the RAF…https://kotaku.com/the-star-wars-costume-thats-recycled-from-a-doctor-who-1571401648
Star Destroyer Halloween Test Drive:
That is awesome , I wish I would have had something like that as a kid . would have been over the moon with joy and had hours and days of fun
^ IIRC he was like that about a great many films (and the sci-fi & fantasy genre in general did have issues with it being looked down upon by quite an upper-class / snobbish BBC at times back then).

^ guess they forgot about their own Doctor Who 😃
^ I enjoyed this and it was a real treat seeing behind the scenes stuff and interviews that I have never seen before . It was great up until about 16 minutes and 45 seconds , and then the host comes off as a snobbish , pompous ass . I mean , wow , he invites Gary Kurtz and Mark Hamill on his show and then proceeds to slam the movie for what he thinks is a weak story , and then provides examples of what he thinks are films with "superior " storytelling . Seems like a dickish move to me . thank you for sharing though , the first 16 minutes and 45 seconds were great .
^ yeah , that is why I said that I would like to see a more concise example . OLED is pretty awesome , a friend of mine has one , that is not what I am interested in though , but thank you for the info .
this is kind of what I am looking for by way of comparison of crt vs lcd display , although , I would like to see a more concise example , this is the closest I have found so far and the black levels and overall picture on the crt in this video look superior to me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5a5kZLvd1w
Nice
^ Really ? you signed up just to make that comment ? Troll , sock or bot ?
maybe that is another reason I like vhs on a crt …vhs was made with crt displays in mind as those were pretty much all that was available at the time
^ me too , though I admit nostalgia plays a factor for me . That and I found an old 13 inch tv/vcr combo at a Goodwill for five bucks about seven years ago and started collecting vhs tapes because of it .Then my neighbor moved out and gave me about 100 or so tapes , some still in the shrink wrap . I also like to collect the hard plastic clamshell vhs movies from the early 80’s ( I have the first two Rambo movies like this ) as well as box sets . I have come to like the softer look of them .
^ thanks for the response ,I suspected as much , I have seen a lot of videos where gamers swear by crt displays as superior due to the rich deep blacks and other things you mention . I wish they would have put the Star Wars films on D-theatre VHS which was a short lived format that had HD VHS tapes …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiu0LPeLQPE I would track one down if they did .
it’s like the behavior of a dog , pissing on every fire hydrant it comes across in order to mark it’s territory
I have always wondered how the display you watch movies on effects the quality of what you are viewing . Say you have a very cheap , low quality lcd tv and a cheap ,low quality blu ray player , and then you have a very high end Crt Tv and a high end vcr …which is the better viewing experience ? I would like to see a side by side comparison of this some time .I have a Samsung Slimfit 38 inch widescreen HD crt tv from the mid 2000’s that has hdmi outputs as well as a 60 inch LG smart tv and to me , the crt looks better .I would like to take pics to compare but I do not have a camera that is up to the task . I have also thought about ( just for fun ) taking my old Sanyo 4x3 16 inch crt from 1997 and hooking an av to hdmi converter to it to see how it looks .anyway , I would be interested to hear peoples meaningful thoughts on this
