For those of us who had the comics, novel, and storybook growing up, it was baffling that it wasn’t in the movie. As the radio drama expanded on it even more, you’d think Lucas would have reinstated those scenes in 1997. Putting the Biggs’ reunion/vouching for Luke’s piloting skills scene back in only pronounces their absence.

^ totally agree ! When the 1997 Special edition was announced , this was the thing I most wanted to see and I was really bummed out when it did not happen . First time I got to see the Luke /Biggs Anchorhead scenes was on the Behind The Magic cd-rom a year later . That storybook had me imagining what it would have been like in the film for 20 years at that point .

By the time of those George Lucas quotes, he’d already filmed the movie and decided against having any nudity. But the concept art was done at a time when the script was still in flux. Going “the Disney route” wasn’t necessarily a decided thing in 1974-5.

Besides which, costume designer John Mollo wrote in his notes from 1975 that Leia’s outfit was to be “mock-medieval” but also “Tarzan-type” (apparently for the prison escape). Which fits with the loincloth in the McQuarrie sketches.

And as I said above, there was basically a rape scene in the 1974 rough draft with a “half-naked” Leia and the “Urellian trappers”, which was indecent enough that JW Rinzler shied away from describing it on the official SW site.

I really think it’s your own assumption that, since SW is “family-friendly” now, it must have always been that way from the very beginning. The evidence suggests otherwise.

^can you post a link to that script showing where it explicitly states that she was half naked ,or a rape ?
and I will concede that it was not decided definitefly at the start …https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/scope/documents/2001/december-2001/kramer.pdf still do not see a loincloth or nudity in any of those sketches you posted though .

because Lucas conceived the film as a retelling of the serials of his youth and wanted to give kids a modern fairy tale mythology and has been quoted many times as saying so . George Lucas in an interview in the New York Times, published on the 12th of September 1976:

It's for young people. 'Graffiti' was for 16-year-olds; this is for 14-year-olds. Young people don't have a fantasy life anymore, not the way we did. All they've got is Kojak and Dirty Harry. There's all these kids running around wanting to be killer cops.

https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/library/film/091276wars.html

and the drawings appear to YOU to show that , again , conjecture on your part and not fact .

See also…In the cover story of the April 1977 issue of American Film, for example, Lucas is quoted as saying: “I decided I wanted to make a children’s movie, to go the Disney route”; because he had realised that “a whole generation was growing up without fairytales” (Zito, 1977: 9, 13).

^ my response from that same thread…^ I highly disagree in all cases . Artists who have studied life drawing typically draw the "nude "figure and build it up from there , adding drapery and then erasing the construction lines… Mcquarrie has studied life drawing . The "nipple chain " you see is a set of lines to establish form and indicate where shadows will fall . What you claim is akin to saying the artist in this example intended these figures to be nude…https://seattleartistleague.com/art-classes/teen-figure-drawing-clothed-afternoon-july-6-10-ages-13-18/

At any rate , Star Wars was never conceived as a film containing nudity . Do you have any articles or behind the scenes interviews to show as proof of what you claim ?..now you cite some examples here, but your conclusions are pure conjecture and not solid proof .

It is definitely a thing (see here , here, and here). At one point McQuarrie even sketched a nipple chain under Leia’s tunic, likely inspired by a line Katharine Hepburn has about wanting to wear one in The Lion in Winter.

^sorry , but as an artist who has been in many life drawing classes , there is nothing in these sketches to support your claim . What you are seeing is thumbnails in the first three , devoid of detail and meant to block out a scene, and in the final images ,those are construction lines for building up the figure . Mcquarrie and many other working artists studied anatomy and in order to draw a clothed figure , the underlying structure is first established in order to accurately portray how the drapery falls upon it . Had that been a completely finished painting from that drawing , those lines would not be there .

Everyone forgets the T-47 Airspeeder (aka Snowspeeder)…

Did you not spend far too much time years ago playing Rogue Squadron games and using your harpoons and tow cables at AT-ATs to circle around to bring them down before finally getting the hang of it - and then achieving Gold Medal status…?

Bloody hell people, did Dak die for nothing? 😉

^ I battled the Empire in my Snowspeeder way back in 1982 , years before the Rogue Squadron games and was the undisputed champion of my household . Played many times the cartridge would get hot to the touch !..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiSY3pt8jZY Love me some Snowspeeders !

The Unpopular Film, TV, Music, Art, Books, Comics, Games, & Technology Opinion Thread (for all you contrarians!)

I often hear the popular opinion that only the even numbered Star Trek films of the original movies are the good ones . I disagree…I just watched Star Trek The Motion Picture (1979)again last night and I think it is highly underrated . I think it is like 2001 A Space Odyssey on steroids ! It’s trippy as hell and has a poignant story . Some complain about the pacing being too slow ,and I used to be in that camp , but watching it again , I remembered that it had been 10 years since the original tv series ended .This is the audiences re introduction into that world and they are meant to experience the same sense of wonder and awe as the characters in the movie themselves experience .Plus , I genuinely appreciate spending time in thought provoking slow burners such as Bladerunner and Watchmen etc .I know George Lucas has been quoted as saying that the problem with some film makers is that they spend too much time on sets and settings and not enough on story , but the best of them make the settings and the worlds part of the story , almost characters themselves.

Maybe the crowd was just more of these guys?

Or else I think it’s just his personal army of Torgos. ;P

Who exactly are those guys? Anyone know?

IIRC, they were supposed to be his advisors, so pretty much like all the flunkies he kept around in the prequels only less alien.
I don’t think I’ve ever spotted the conehead one in the movie.

What was Kenner thinking making one of these guys an action figure when we never even got a Wedge?

Poor chap never even got a proper name at the time.

^ Wow , I never noticed just how much those guys look like something drawn by Jean Geraud Moebius ! He had an influence on the look of the probe droid , so I wonder if they used him for inspiration here as well ? I would be willing to bet that they did .

^ Hey, I was talking on the phone with my mom this morning & happened, for some reason, to mention waking up thirsty, & she said the SAME THING YOU DID!
I laughed & when she asked what was funny, I just told her “A kind soul just passed off this same info.” 😄
Kinda has me thinking though… Maybe I should cut back on my water intake just so see how my thirst is really doing? Sounds strange, but.

^ Mom’s are the greatest ! Your body does need water though, so I would recommend drinking a moderate amount . Exercise is key and avoiding too many carbs and sugars . Portion control on food . You can still enjoy things but in moderation . You need to burn off what you take in .Wish I had been more aware of this before I was diagnosed . I might have prevented it .But then , I was in my mid 40’s and it was adult onset. plus ,it can be hereditary . 2 of my relatives had type 2 .Even a brisk 15 minute walk per day can help towards prevention .
