The Clone Wars Arc Edits [OPINIONS NEEDED] (a WIP)
Time

In my opinion, with Option 1 you don’t gain much compared to just watching the three/four relevant episodes back to back (unless you’re planning to do something particularly unusual with them) but you would lose the newsreel intros which connect the episodes together. Option 2 would have the advantage of giving you a wider variety of material to work with to lessen that episodic feeling, while also condensing the series down to an even more watchable form (but is of course much more difficult to do!).

Personally I’ve wanted to make two 3 or 3.5 hour movies out of the series, dealing primarily with Maul and Ahsoka’s stories, culminating in a ROTS and Siege of Mandalore mashup, but I’ve never actually made any real progress towards this since I’ve already got unfinished edits of all the other movies sat on my hard drive, crying out for me to eventually finish them…

I’d vote to leave Qui-Gon out simply because it’s explicitly stated in canon that Qui-Gon can only manifest as a voice.

Depends on how canon you believe From A Certain Point of View is. The official line seems to be “Although From a Certain Point of View forms part of the Star Wars canon, it presents several contradictions. As such, Lucasfilm Story Group’s Matt Martin confirmed that the contradictions present in the stories were intentional, as that was part of the project’s nature.”.

Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread

Yeah, it’s canon from the Rise of Kylo Ren comic that Snoke telepathically speaks to Kylo (and has since he was a child). I wouldn’t put whispers of Palpatine in in any way which would imply he is still actually alive, since Snoke working for/being Palpatine seems to be a surprise to Kylo in TROS.

Idea: Thoughts on a VERY crude 'The Rise of Skywalker' edit.

Sounds like an interesting cut list. I like your idea about removing Lando from Pasaana - if you can cut around that and still have the movie make sense, that’d be great. I think for a lot of people that’s around the point where the frantic pacing begins to become confusing, and in the cinema I never picked up on why Lando happened to be there; it just felt like an even more egregious version of Han showing up in TFA. Saving Lando for Poe’s moment of doubt would make it a lot more powerful, and IIRC that scene is even structured such that Lando’s arrival from the shadows is something of a ‘reveal’, especially if you could add in Poe saying “General!” or similar. He says ‘General Calrissian’ when they meet on Pasaana but it’s not in quite the right tone of voice.

I also heard this in the theatre, but the subtitles claim it’s “Ghouls.”.

Edit: I’ve read online it’s a reference to this. I feel like we can vastly improve TROS by redubbing masked Kylo with lines from this movie as often as possible.

I really love that. By far the best execution I’ve seen of this concept. My only criticism (besides the minor tracking thing HAL mentioned) is that Luke appears a bit small.

Do you intend to add Anakin? If you found some appropriate raw footage to use, I could attempt to age Hayden up for you (with FaceApp, EBSynth and After Effects) to match the others so he wouldn’t look quite so jarringly out of place. Vader was only 45 when he died, but I’d have to age Hayden Christensen up to look at least as old as ~65-year-old Mark Hamill (playing a 53 year old ghost!) since it would be weird to have the father appearing younger than the son.

Bonus fact: in ROTJ, a ~68 year old Alec Guiness is playing the ghost of a man who died at 57. Every ghost Jedi is cast older than the actual character - well, except for Frank Oz’s Yoda…

Dom's (Possibly) Useful TROS Edit (WIP)
Time

Seamless editing (though the transition to Rey is a little abrupt - opportunity for a wipe?).

What’s your plan for Palpatine’s plan in the movie? Maybe I’m just slow but I never worked out why he asked Kylo to kill Rey. He clearly doesn’t actually want her dead; he wants her on Exegol so he can ritualistically bodysnatch her or whatever. What if Kylo had run Rey through and come back to claim his new fleet? Was Palps just banking on Kylo caring too much about Rey? Palpatine’s prequel plans were hardly airtight either, but I don’t really see what he actually wants from Kylo. Once they’re together he uses the dyad - was that his plan all along?

I like “I’m no one”, but do you think you can get the mouth movements to work?

No, which is why I put it over the shot of her holding the Skywalker saber. Not a perfect solution (would they have ever shot it that way?) but there is a symbolic justification, so I think it works.

I’d love to see a clip of this, if you’ve already edited it into a state you’re willing to share.

Ben & Rey - The Power of One (11:47) by tstudios

I feel this edit does a good job of tying together the arc of these two characters across the three movies in a coherent way, especially with how it recontextualises certain dialogue. It also entirely omits Rey Palpatine, demonstrating how unnecessary that retcon was to creating a compelling story. The ending is a bit OTT and the sharpening on the footage is horrendous, though.

My hot take is that the sequel trilogy are the least political Star Wars movies that exist. ¯\(ツ)

I can’t believe Disney ruined my favourite franchise about anti-imperialist terrorist guerillas and fascist coups in corrupt pseudo-democratic oligarchies by bringing politics into it!

Seriously though, the entire of the Phantom Menace is about a false flag attack, and AOTC is all about how an authoritarian leader manufactures a fake enemy to seize additional power. The greedy Separatists, who’re willing to sell out to basically Satan himself in order to gain power and wealth, have such on-the-nose names as the “Corporate Alliance” and the “Trade Federation”. Their most prominent leader is named Nute Gunray.

EDIT: On topic, is there any mileage in making Rey’s return to Ajan Kloss during the victory celebration feel more bittersweet, like Frodo’s return to the Shire? She already shows up covered in blood and looking somewhat shell-shocked, but the music sells it as triumphant and the movie quickly cuts away to Jannah hitting on Lando.

EDIT 2: I love how JJ put the entire Resistance in the background of the scene of Leia stumbling, and then also made sure literally all of them land on that one Star Destroyer together, so that I can’t possibly move Leia’s death to Act 3.

Revenge of the Sith - Expanded Edition (v2 Now Released!)

I like the scene but you’d have to cut some of the banter between Grievous and Anakin/Kenobi when they get captured.

“You’re shorter than I expected!”
“What? Did you already forget what I looked like from fifteen minutes ago when I executed Shaak Ti?”

It also obviously precludes you from implementing the scene where Anakin kills Shaak Ti. That scene does have the problem of suggesting Shaak Ti doesn’t sense any of Order 66 going on around her, though, and requires some not insignificant AE work to clean it up.

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

We actually know that the scene of Kylo interrogating Chewie was filmed. John Williams recorded a track called “Chewie’s Interrogation” that was obviously intended for that scene.

Ah, thanks. Seeing that and some of the other speculation in that thread makes my soul hurt. I’d double dip for an extended edition, Lucasfilm! It’s not like half of the cut scenes aren’t ‘canon’ anyway because of the novel, so if JJ removed them to attempt to change the story, that’s been undone. If they were just cut for runtime/pacing… well I don’t think there’s a single person who’s seen TROS and would argue it was too slow-paced! And it’s out of theatres now; no need to worry about cramming in extra showings.
