The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)
Time

I agree that ‘just Rey’ works without Rey Palpatine - having her say it in a proud manner rather than a sad one demonstrates she’s found herself - but only if you cut the shots of her pausing to stare at the ghosts. Otherwise it would feel like a conscious rejection of the Skywalkers, in my view. In a Rey Palpatine edit you could suggest she’s looking at them for support with her choice to reject her Palpatine lineage, but without that context, I don’t think it would feel right.

Best HD Version(s) of Prequel Trilogy Deleted Scenes? Check out Hal 9000's package!
Time

Here are a few shots. They’re fairly underwhelming; I don’t think they really hold up any better than HAL’s do - you still have to sit pretty far from your TV, or have a small screen, for them to hold up to the actual Bluray footage. They also suffer the common upscaling problem of being overly sharp, making areas without much actual picture information seem clear and in focus (I think this is most apparent on the Senate Offices establishing shot) when your brain would have done a better job of just imagining that detail in a blurrier image. Maybe a slight softening and fake graining would help that. I’ll keep trying to improve them. Note that the colour difference comes from HAL’s upscale being slightly regraded, I think, while mine aren’t.

I’ve run all the ROTS deleted scenes through all four current (Video) Gigapixel HD algorithms and have been going through deciding which is best for each shot and blending in others if necessary. So far I’ve found Artemis HQ generally works best; CG is cleaner but makes less of an attempt to add detail. I can post a few screenshots later. It’s not that significant an improvement over Hal’s upscales for most shots, honestly. Small faces are a weakness as well - I may attempt to enhance them with Remini but that’s a lot more manual work than I was really intending to put in.

The difficulty with pitching down Anakin’s voice is that the prequels have a lot of music in the centre channel and pitching the music down makes it sound awful. Perhaps with RTX Voice and Spleeter it would be possible to better separate the two, however. Which scene would work best for a test? Bearing in mind that simply pitching Hayden down won’t change the tone of his voice to be any rougher, so lines like “Don’t lecture me Obi-Wan” would still be… sing-songy.

Revenge of the Sith: Refocused - a Clone Wars: Refocused Companion Edit (v3.03 Available now)

The final episode (available now if you convince Disney+ you’re in Australia…) might be difficult to integrate into ROTS. It’s essentially continuous with few clear ‘breaks’ and the tone is very different to the tone of the third act of the movie. Cutting from this episode to say, Yoda vs Palpatine, would be a lot of tonal whiplash. You might have to delay the end of this episode to be part of ROTS’ ending montage.

I like most of your changes. The 'General Skywalker’s are particularly excellent, as are the added Ewan noises when he sees the hologram. A few of the audio additions (esp. Padme’s balcony) feel a little crowded in but such is the nature of these things. Will you be releasing your edit with a 5.1 audio track so I can steal your audio changes more easily, or just stereo like the earlier verson?

Oh, and I can’t work out what Anakin says at the start of palpatinereveal.mp4.

Anakin makes the force choke sound with his mouth by taking a big gulp of air in preduel.mp4

In my ROTS/Siege of Mandalore edit, I’ve cut ‘the dark side of the force surrounds the chancellor’ from the War Room scene (I’m just using the ROTS footage until Ahsoka shows up… it’s a bit weird) and kept just that line in the earlier Jedi deleted scene, since it segues into Obi-Wan’s ‘shift in the force’ line. I then later cut from Obi-Wan’s “The proof will come when Grievous is gone.” to a closeup on Mace turning his head away from Obi-Wan to end that scene, irising out on his face AOTC-Sandpeople-style to the Jedi Temple establishing shot. You lose Yoda’s first “great care” but I think it keeps as much of the War Room scene intact as possible, while ensuring there’s enough material to have the Jedi’s early suspicion about Palpatine make sense; and ending the scene on Mace helps hint that he’ll be the one to confront Palpatine.

It always amused me that during the temple massacre - at least, when we see him enter the council chamber to kill the younglings - Anakin doesn’t have the Sith eyes. It’s only when he’s on his way to kill Wat Tambor that he’s sufficiently evil to qualify. And then he has a good cry over all the dead Separatists :’(

Hedgesmfg, will you be releasing it in HDR, or are you just using the 10bitHDR source material to produce a better quality 8bitSDR final render?

Perhaps we should have a thread - some kind of TCW Radical Redux - for these mashups and other edits of the series, since it seems like there will be at least three two similar edits of this arc and ROTS.

Regarding sharing, you can’t post direct links in your thread, but you can do whatever you like via PM, so that tends to be how edits are shared.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars To Return With New Episodes

The way these last episodes of The Clone Wars are overlapping with Revenge of the Sith, I bet someone will eventually edit them together like the Watchmen and Black Freighter “Ultimate Cut.”

Yeah, I’ve been working on this, and Delpheas is doing a similar thing. The pacing doesn’t quite match up since so much of TCW Episode 9 occurs before ROTS even starts, but if you delay the start of the actual siege a bit then it can help add more excitement to the lul in Revenge of the Sith.

I’ve edited together ROTS, the first two episodes of the SoM and the ROTS Deleted Scenes into something of a very similar nature, though for my first revision I’m not making any changes whatsoever to any of the source material (with the sole exception of cutting a single Mace line from the War Room scene so I could use it in the earlier Deleted Scene without repetition). I also decided not to include 2003 Clone Wars, as the style is too different and it just delays the meat of ROTS. The challenge really is stretching out the actual Siege bit of Episode 9 across the first ~50 minutes of ROTS.

NFBisms, does your extensive knowledge of Hayden’s filmography extend to knowing of any better shots of him standing fairly still and smiling?

Also, while we’re on the subject: why did they just reuse Shaw’s body for the Hayden ghost? Anakin in the prequels has - like most of the Jedi to some degree - a unique outfit underneath his robe. Obviously that hadn’t been designed when they shot ROTJ so they just gave Ghost Anakin the same outfit as Obi-Wan, but if they were so intent to change the ghost for the DVDs they could’ve actually done the full job.

Edit: My bad, I thought I was in OT radical redux.

FaceApp unfortunately only has an ‘Old’ filter, no middle-aged filter, so my crude ageing technique can only do old old. I can approximate a sort-of middle-aged look by blending the old face on top of the young face at a reduced opacity, however.. It doesn’t really resemble Hayden’s actual ageing, though.

Morphing Hayden with Shaw is beyond my capabilities. FaceApp does have a ‘morphing’ feature but it’s fairly terrible and the result winds up resembling neither, nor having the correct facial expression. Perhaps with real dedication I could scrape together enough footage of Shaw to try to do some kind of DeepFake, but given I can only find about six different colour photos of him on Google Images, I doubt I’d have much luck (and besides, I still haven’t finished training my Fake Wedge DeepFake model…).

A test at making TLJ Yoda look more like his OT self: https://streamable.com/vmvf04

How did you achieve this? A still frame from ESB blended and manually warped to match the TLJ animation, or is it something more like a Deepfake?

Edit: looking at how some of his eyewrinkles remain in place - EBSynth?
