I did not know that was how you knew how many blocks were in a par2 file. I definitely learned something there........

Help: looking for... Anyone got the 1983 ITV airing of Star Wars?

Here is a post I did a few months ago.............

Firstly, it has the mono soundtrack with the C3P0 tractor beam line, close the blast doors etc

Secondly, I believe this to be a totally different "cut" of the film to the one released on VHS and Laserdisc.

The shot that shows this is Luke's macrobinocular POV shot of the Banthas with the Tusken Raider walking to the side of the frame.

The "Full length" NTSC version shows the view in the middle of the macrobinoculars with no Tusken Raider.

The early "Time Compressed" NTSC version and PAL version shows the macrobinocular squeezed into the frame and the Tusken Raider.

This ITV broadcast shows a completely different view..............

I have to agree with Moth3r that his recording of the mono soundtrack from the 80's ITV broadcast synched and added to the Moth3r ANH is the best way (so far) of watching ANH with the mono soundtrack.

The video is definately a different Pan and Scan cut to the other retail versions released at around the same time in the US and UK. A single screenshot comparison is shown here.

The mono differences are shown here.

Info: British new kid cuddling 3 VHS tapes...
Time
The important thing to look for with any DVD Recorder bought with a view to recording bought VHS tapes is the Macrovision that the tapes are protected by.

Straight from the box, my LiteOn would not allow copying of any bought tape or any premium SKY TV channel - movies/sports etc. I found and installed a Macrovision disabling hack and now it works fine.

I do need to get my finger out and update the VHS page of the site as I now have loads more cover scans and much more details to add.

My entire collection was bought through ebay UK.

The trilogy you "lost" I got for under two quid plus postage and most of the rest were between 50p and three quid plus postage. I paid a bit more for the early releases but they are much rarer. The Executor box set was only 99p plus postage but that was a very bizzarre fluke.

I am glad you liked the VHS page from my site so if you want to see more and look at what LD transfers, edits, projects etc are out there on DVD, go here.

Ell referred to trades that he was willing to do and I suspect that many of the titles he has will be listed here.

Sorry for bringing this thread ever-so-slightly-back-on-topic, but I have been dabbling with getting my fairly extensive UK VHS collection backed up onto DVD using a VHS player and a LiteOn DVD Recorder with the Macrovision block disabled.

Read a bit about it in this thread.

There are a few more details here.

However, a VHS transfer does not look as good as any of the properly transfered LaserDisc releases out there.

This is absolutely stunning and a must have for any Star Wars DVD collection!!!!!!

The on screen video and still images fit perfectly with the audio of the original Story of album and is what every kid in 1977 dreamed of whilst listening to the album.

GL could take this, add a Lucas Film logo at the start and release this as it is - in fact, he could learn a thing or two as well.

Bring on Empire and Jedi NOW!!

'Star Wars: The Interactive Board Game' DVD.......a daveytod release (Released)
Time
Personally, I am kinda grateful for anything new that comes our way and will do whatever I have to do to get hold of the things.

It is either that or get off my fat arse, buy the laserdisc/tape etc, the appropriate player, a Macrovision disabler, capture card and all the appropriate software. Having spent big bucks, I would then spend months working out how to use all the above up to the point that I could produce professional products such as our extremely talented Welsh friend here has done on more than one occasion.

So, I look forward to the next (first!) release of anyone who is not happy here and if that is not forthcoming, I suggest that you follow my example above and be grateful..........

Not having someone seeding can be a wee bit of a nuisance but we all know that it is worth the wait.

Info Wanted: has anyone done a VCD to DVD 'Star Wars Saga' preservation?
Time
There is an Asian bootleg of Ep 1 on DVD from Laserdisc as well as a recent transfer done by a member of this forum of the same Laserdisc.

There is also the TB Release of Ep 1 which is a Scandanavian DVB broadcast captured to DVD. I uploaded a few screenshots and a video clip in this thread.

I am not aware of any Ep 1 VHS or VCD captures.

Info Wanted: CBS VHS Tape to DVD ?
Time
Which VHS tape have you got??

The 1982 US NTSC Fullscreen VHS has been captured and released by The Starkiller who has also done the Laserdisc from the same year.

These are very different cuts of the film. The Laserdisc is time compessed to fit on a 2 hour disc and very different pan and scan decisions have been used all through the film.

From what I have seen, the UK PAL Fullscreen VHS and Laserdisc have identical cuts of the film.

See here for a few comparison shots.

Is your tape one of these???

Info Wanted: What is the preservation project closest to the original 1977 release?
Time
I followed this basic tutorial to record some vinyl and simply swapped cables to my tape deck.

It is simple amd it works although there are probably far better software packages out there now.

Is your recording of SW or ESB??? Either way I cannot wait to hear what you have and for The Starkiller to further increase his "differences" pages.

Mono mix for Moth3r's ANH DVD

Hmm...

Video file 4211 MB
AC-3 (2.0 surround) file 160 MB
AC-3 (1.0) file 80 MB

Total 4450MB

(Capacity of a single layer DVD-R = 4488MB)

So it might all fit on, I suppose it depends on the overhead added by multiplexing..........

..........or by the use of DVD Shrink.

It was such a long time ago and I cannot remember the exact details!!

Mono mix for Moth3r's ANH DVD

I still like the video quality far more in Moth3r's original, and I also realized that I can't make a disc with the mono-mix as a bonus audio track when using the NTSC version. Since the PCM track on Dr. M's disc isn't recognized by dvdauthorgui (as far as I can tell), I can only make a disc with just the mono mix. With Moth3r's, the original audio is an ac3 file, and I know enough about dvd authoring that I could make the dvd a dual soundtrack disc simply by adding the mono ac3. I realize there are likely ways to get around all this, but I'm new at encoding and authoring and all that... I really have no idea and can't seem to figure it out from the information I've found on the subject.

Thanks Scruffy for that comprehensive reply to my request for assistance. I do not really understand or follow how HTML works. The fact that the pages have been done at all as well as uploaded for all to see is a major miracle!!!!!!!!!

I took a "very basic" initial framed layout, cut, copied, pasted, begged, stole and borrowed to get the "Grandson of Frankenstein" you see today.

Below is a reply to some of your suggestions. I will digest the rest later and reply in full

Unless there's something going on I don't see, no coding is necessary for a static website like GTF. Only markup. And some good markup and CSS could make it look very nice.
Looking nice is what I am looking for. I think it looks good as it is but realise that it is far from perfect for the masses.

First thing I'd do, is I'd take that banner, cut out all the black space, and make it a transparent PNG. That way, the starfield (or whatever background you use in the future) will be visible behind it, instead of a big black rectangle.

I tried that and failed so I would love to have your fixed file.

Next, I'd consider making the navigation more logical, or at least more readable.

More readable is also what I am looking for too. The navigation seems to me to be OK, especially for the expansion I am planning but any specific improvements you could suggest for the masses would be appreciated. Doing something "clever" is beyond my limited skills.

I will respond more later.

Thanks again.
