Wow, these look great!
:-(
If someone does manage to sync it, please share the exact settings/delay you used to get it in sync with the 4K blu-ray.
Thanks
I think it could look a little better still, but that's just me. I am happy with it, as I hated the previous releases, except for the old Orion DVD release and Criterion LD/DVD.
I don't like the 5.1 one though, it sounds too fake and flat in my opinion. The stereo track on the Criterion sounds slightly more aggressive in parts, and there are other parts that sound clearer. For example, when we are introduced to ED-209 at the start, there is more of a electrical humming/buzz to ED-209 on the stereo mixes than in 5.1.

I have heard that the Ghostbusters Superbit DTS mix is different/better than the other mixes found on DVD and Blu-ray. Does anyone know if this is true?
I used to own these (and Ghostbusters 2). I'm 90% sure they're the same as the mix on the 2005 dvd. I ripped the dts files before selling them, so I could check if there's anything specific I can listen out for?
Hmm, I am not really sure what to specifically compare. However, I always think a good test for dynamics is the beginning at the library right to the scene where the ghostbusters title logo appears. There are probably better ones, but I always think the opening scene is a good one, specifically for listening to the music as the camera pans to the lion statue in front of the library, and the subtleties in the music as the librarian walks through the library.
I know for fact the Criterion laserdisc is louder and better than the the dvd and blu-ray mixes, that is why I am curious about the Superbit DTS mix.

I noticed while watching the Superman IV LD rip that there was a brief view of the LD volume levels being viewed, then it disappeared, it would need to be removed if it were to be a source for an edit. Other than that, it was a decent cap @ only 4GB size.
Thanks for sharing. It was a real treat.
:)
Glad you enjoyed it, you're welcome.

Is the extended cut any better though the original was one of the worst films i have ever seen especially in terms of cheesy bad acting and terrible effects.
Along with Star Trek V it has to have some of the worst effects of the later 1980's.
The extended cut is only 3 minutes longer, with 2 added sequences during the Nuclear Man fight. It doesn't improve the film much, but if it's the way you are used to seeing the film it at least makes it feel complete again. The score is also really good and it continues without interruption with these 2 scenes put back in.

For the audio, I was wondering if there were any differences between the LD, DVD and Blu-ray?
I think they are all the same mix. They are all stereo. The bluray is DTS-HD-MA, so the bitrate it much higher than the DVD version.
But are there any differences in dynamic range between them? I know LD audio can sometimes be better than the DVD and Blu-ray for this.

Hi everyone, hope you all had a nice Christmas.
For the record mine is a PAL laserdisc, so yeah... it is cropped unfortunately.
Booshman has kindly provided me with the missing scenes which I needed, so the only thing I can think of is try and upscale them to fit the blu-ray. However I am more inclined to try and either downscale the blu-ray to 480p so the difference isn't as jarring. But as already noted, the DVD has a colour timing closer to the LD footage... so it's really finding the right balance. I don't know which people would prefer.
I will post some screenshots of my attempt at colour-correcting the blu-ray at some point, which has for the most part, been desaturating it slightly, and to remove some of the teal.
I think if you're going to downscale the bluray, you might as well use the DVD as the source. It looks a lot nicer colour wise and will save you work. I think based off the quality of the rip that the footage will blend better this way too.
I think it is possible to get really good results using the blu-ray source to match the LD footage or vice versa, but as you said, it will be time consuming, and there could be a number of problems making this look seamless.
For the sake of just getting the whole cut out there, I would agree that it would be easier to use the original DVD and the LD footage for the missing scenes, which I may simply do.

Sorry for lack of updates.
At the moment I am trying some colour-correction (or colour-retiming - whatever you want to call it) of the blu-ray. I am trying to remove some of the blue/green tint from the picture, and also fix the red in Superman's costume, which appears to be too rich at times. This is just some experimentation at the moment - I have no idea what the project will become yet.
I will post some screenshots at some point to show you some results when it is looking nearer to how I want it (I'm still learning a few things right now).
You are not alone in wanting to see this done.
The nearest thing that you're going to get for the moment is dark_jedi's preservation of the 1997 SE trilogy. He is doing one film at a time, since he is improving the picture from a broadcast TV source and syncing it to the original DTS sound mix.
As others have mentioned, there are also some projects that are preserving the 35mm trailers.
That canyon looks amazing!!

quick question
is there any noticable picture difference between the original and THX remastered release of Die Hard?
i'm hoping someone preserves the 35mm Stereo track from the original LD and couples it with the 5.1 remix that is reportedly based on the 70mm print. Pretty sure Jonno was in the process of capturing the 35mm audio last i heard
Hoping to see this new 4K remastered print at the weekend :)
I forgot about that, it's playing near me too.
If the 4K master is as good as when I went to see Ghostbusters in 4K, then it will probably be awesome.
Wow, nice work!
Really liking the upscaling results.
lol
Happy Birthday!

just found this rather interesting video on youtube regarding the audio mixes
This is why it's interesting to own all versions.
That's a great find SilverWook.
I did toy with the idea several times of getting the laserdisc and making a preservation, but I am still a newbie with the whole methods with preserving laserdiscs, so felt it was best in someone else's hands.
The BD will probably take an enormous amount of work to perfect to ensure it is working properly for everybody with all the features, so I can understand why Harmy does not want to rush the release. Don't forget it also saves him extra work later on with having to fix things that he didn't spot/notice before.
This is great news! Can't wait!
Apologies, I joined the board and then forgot to go back. Added you to my bookmark list now.
It will be very interesting to the see captured frames from this to compare!
You could divide the iso into smaller .rar file parts and upload that way using places like rapidgator, despositfiles etc.
I take it the version that was briefly available is the restored international cut that Alex S was working on?
It could be my computer monitor but did Ady do something with the contrast/brightness/colours in the new clip? I know he was changing the colours from the 2004 transfer anyway, but something seems slightly different compared to his previous clips.
I love this film. I'm down for $80.
