Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

For those who think that this trailer might just be using old footage and are still hopeful for correct colors on the BR, think about this:

If they didn't fix it in the last 6 years, they're not going to in the next 6 months.

I don't feel very hopeful at all to be honest. I wish I could. >:(

Well the trailer for the Blu-Ray is up now. The OT colours are exactly the same as 2004 but yet again they use the new transfer for TPM. Well hopefully this will shut the kenkraly's of this world up now. THE COLOURS WILL NOT BE FIXED FOR THE BLU-RAY. It's the official LFL trailer and you can clearly see that even the crappy sabres are the same as 2004. Just looks at the crossed sabres in front of the Emperor.

http://starwars.com/video/view/001175.html

So September 2011. Couldn't have timed it better. Now i won't have to part with any money for this set but instead get it brought for me for my wedding anniversary ;)

Yeah, saw that trailer on the amazon site as well. It's possible that's just a promo trailer and not an accurate representation of what will come. However, like you said, Episode 1 looks improved, certainly less pink there and the sabers look more saturated, so if that's anything to go by, then this is it - this is what we're getting !

I couldn't really tell much from the limited footage shown, but it looked possibly like there was less blue in ANH where Han is being chased by the storm troopers in the corridor - the walls look more grey than they 2004 DVD but I could be wrong. The Hoth battle clip looked better than I remember it being on the 2004 DVD too, and some of the laser blasts from the ties seem a little greener, but other than that, I couldn't really tell.

It's been so long since I have watched the 2004 DVDs that the changes that I thought I could see in the trailer, might not be new changes at all. The most obvious thing I could see that is unchanged like you said is the crappy sabers.

I'm really looking foward to TESB 97SE comparisons.

It will be interesting to see if Vader has a pink lightsaber when he points at Luke while he is next to the Carbon Freezing Chamber pit - that part in the 2004 SE looked horrible.

Also, another thing that would be interesting to compare, is whether the blue tint on planet hoth is similar when comparing 97 SE and 2004 SE.

Can't wait!
It's not that kind of comparison. I'm trying to limit it to deliberate changes, not transfer mistakes other than random examples. I'm thinking they didn't recomposite the sabers in every shot, which is why Vader's saber is pink in 2004 as they just went back to the 1997 film and messed with the colors. So far, that looks to be what happened.

There are some shots where the lightsabers have been redone, you can tell because they actually have a core. The slomo fight has cores and has been redone. The tauntaun slicing has no core and apparently has not been redone.

Apologies.

I actually should know this, as I have been following! Just got carried away and forgot the topic of comparison.

I hope Ady's computer comes back to life.

He posted the exact motherboard name/specs, but he's not sure he wants to replace it with another one that's exactly the same. I'd be wary too.

Intel Sandy Bridge time?! ;p

Just kidding.

Hope he gets it all sorted, as Ady's computer HAS to be up for the job, or all is doomed. >:(

My word...that was awesome!

Yoda now looks like he is really alive - so much better than any other version done before CGI and Puppet wise. Subtlety is clearly the winner here. No need for reliance on complete CGI characters when you can mix a real physical thing like a puppet and bring it to life with minor digital tweaks. Film makers should take note, this is how you do it!

When you see what can be achieved and brought to life - all fresh, new and exciting, it's so inspiring! It makes me want to literally learn how to do this stuff, because you can actually feel the 'magic'. This what Star Wars is all about, and Ady has really captured this well with his work.

What if by some chance LFL does'nt recycle the HD masters from 2004 and make new ones for the blu-ray release? Then what?

It would be amazing if they did do new masters for the blu-ray, but it just seems so unlikely at this point. But you're right, there is a possibility.

Raiders definitely has had some tweaks. There are some HD broadcasts circulating that show a new CGI truck falling off the cliff. But Raiders is a different beast altogether, as it hasn't really had any major alterations over the years except for the digital restoration work on the picture for the DVD release by Lowry, whereas the OT has had a lot of work done to it already.

Also, wouldn't it be possible, that the reason Lucas isn't really changing anything to do with the original trilogy is because he is saving that for his later 3D release which will require the most work?

And so, if the HD documentary screens are any indication, and if my above statement falls to be true, then it's extremely possible that we are to get 2004 ported HD content for the Blu-rays. In that case, Adywan, you really are our only hope.

xD

Also, been looking at that clip of the new ROTJ footage, where Luke is in cave with the lightsaber and Vader is on the ship, and it seems there is quite an obvious green cast in parts. It seems either this could be due to the way it was filmed with the video camera, or ROTJ could be following a new green colour scheme, much like how ESB was nearly all blue...

I dunno, maybe I am looking far too much into it lol.

Looks like for TPM they have softened the picture slightly, maybe to look similar to the soft digital look of EP2 and 3?

Still, colour wise, it looks definitely improved. Question is, did they fix the colours in the lightsaber fight with Darth Maul at the end too? The DVD colours always bothered me there.

Yay! new pics!

I actually liked the old transport pic, because it was so new and different, plus it gave a whole different perspective of the Rebel force, which I thought was interesting. But this new one, I have to say, with the little improvements, looks even better!

Nice work.

Btw, Ady is it true that if you donate now you get a small little pressie clip?! ;-P

I doubt that DJ will be making an h.264 MKV version available.  That's what I'll be doing for my own personal collection, but I doubt DJ will be doing it himself.

I really don't understand why this wont be released in MKV. It would take almost no effort to make the encode from the source material.

That would be far superior to recoding from the down sampled audio and video of the DVD9.

dark_jedi has covered this before, but I am going to chip in and say this:

If .mkv will "take almost no effort" to do like you say, then it shouldn't be a problem doing it yourself from the finished material, once dark_jedi has finished.

Right now, he is trying to just get it 'done' and he has other worries like the recent GOUT problem he discovered in the other thread.

I am quite happy with everything the way it is personally (but that's me), anymore work asked of dj is stretching it a bit, given the amount of time he has spent trying to do just the things he planned to do..

I think if people want the option for the other crawl, then they should make it themselves - seeing as the people who are asking know how to do it anyway.

Sorry for the lack of updates but I have been playing Star Wars The Force Unleashed II and God of War Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, but anyways here is where I am currently at on all,

The Empire Strikes Back "Imperial Edition" - DONE
'97 Special Edition Trilogy V2 - DONE
GOUT Trilogy V3 "MBE" - DONE
GOUT Trilogy V3 - Star Wars is DONE, ESB and ROTJ still working on audio.

The reason it has been taking me so long(besides playing video games LOL) every time I check the V2 of the SE Jedi I find something I do not like, so redoing 2 more times and just now finished watching my latest, I can say that I am finally happy with this version better then all the rest I have done, so now that this is my final, SE V2 is finished, and in my opinion only, I do not think the '97 SE can look or sound any better, especially not from a laserdisc capture.

I have already started burning all the peoples packages that donated Verbatim DL's, all I need to finish and author up is ESB and ROTJ and then your sets will be on there way home to you, then after these kind folks look over ALL DVD's(since these folks will be going over everything 1 more time) and if everything is good, then I will figure out how and where and when I will upload.

Thanks for your time

I have to commend you dark_jedi, that seems like a lot of work to undertake in your spare time. I bet you must have been burnt out from all of that, I know I would!

I'm loving the teamwork going on here!
It takes a team to wrap our minds around all of the different versions. I just can't believe we're the first to notice the "there one version, gone the next" scanlines. Not having scan lines in one version I can kind of understand.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_1WBvrwBY-EI/TNHwVyIly4I/AAAAAAAAG-Q/_-kK2ESUF74/s800/capitans-all.jpg

This I don't. The scanlines are going in the complete opposite direction!

Interesting.

Seems like they decided to alter them further in the last one, which I am assuming is the 2004 one - I guess simply because they could?

Just to be sure, which one is which? the last one definitely looks 2004 SE but not sure what the top 2 are.
