I keep seeing people ask if Hairy's 5.1 reconstruction is 'better' than the Blu-ray audio, to which the response is always that it blows it out of the water.  What I'm wondering is in what aspects exactly does it best it?

The best way to truly understand is a direct comparison. Listen with headphones or good speakers for the best effect!

Here is a direct comparison of the Bluray and the one used in 2.1 (Hairy_Hen posted this awhile back, but the link went down). The differences are very noticeable. The bluray has added effects, a flat droning bass sound and is first in the comparison. If you listen, you will notice that the Bluray is very muddy (lacking much of the treble sound) and lacks any dynamic range. The sound levels are noticeably clipped and distorted when the death star blows up

Here is also a description of what is precisely wrong with the "official" mix: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-1977-70mm-sound-mix-recreation-stereo-and-51-versions-now-available/post/548812/#TopicPost548812

Oh my god!

The blu-ray sounds so lifeless compared to the other mix! The blaster sounds have so much more dynamic range to them than the blu-ray mix.

I can't believe how bad it is in comparison. Just shows what you get used to hearing.

If h_h is doing corrections to his mixes, would they still make it to the BD release? Hope so. :)

His mixes are awesome. It would be great if he did some further fixes/tweaks to his mixes, but I wouldn't be too bothered if he didn't. The current mix is pretty amazing the way it is, and certainly excellent when viewing the beginning of ANH.

I wouldn't object to the idea if he wanted to do some more work on them though. ;-)

The HD DVD track is bit-identical to the Blu-ray track.

I don't even bother with either anymore. Both the fact the audio sounding less impressive and the increased contrast that makes the green stand out, always puts me off.

It would be cool if we could apply a script to the original DVD and do some kind of upscaling like with the GOUT to make it near HD.

if your looking for a specific screen grab please let me know

Thanks for those. I took your screenshots and my 1999 screenshots and put them on the screenshot comparison website so we can see the differences.

I'd like to compare the 2005 DVD screens with the superbit one at some point as well.

Anyway, here are the comparisons of the 1999 DVD with your Superbit DVD (I tried to get them match perfectly but it was difficult to capture the exact frame):

just doubled checked and the Japanese Superbit DVD's are from the 2005 master

bugger :(

bigrob any chance you can post some screenshots of the Superbit DVD transfer with the 2005 DVD? There might be some subtle differences between them that have been missed.

I spoke to someone on one of the ghostbusters community boards a few years back and they claimed there was some differences in colour timing with the Superbit compared to the 2005 DVD transfer. Maybe less noise in the contrast boosting as well, I can't really remember.

What is the best audio to match with the 1080i HDTV version?

The 5.1 audio from the original WB DVD looks. It's 384kbps if I remember correctly, so it seems the same at the laserdisc. Anyway, I'm sorry, but I can't remember if I put a delay on it or not, but it eventually works.

You know, I've always suspected it might be. When I heard the Dolby TrueHD track on the blu-ray and hd-dvd versions they seemed to lack any impact sounds when people were punching or kicking, it was also similar with some of the shoot out scenes on the roof. I compared them for ages, not really understanding why the original DVD track seemed louder and better to my ears - this is with all the right equipment to play HD audio properly as well!

A couple of scenes I really noticed the difference between the two tracks were:

When neo dodges bullets on the roof

When neo is doing kung fu with morpheus.

Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions

Well, I've seen one of them so far which is TPM. I have to say it is greatly improved over the previous DVD version. The colours are closer to what I remember at the theater and the sound is phenomenal - it sounded like stuff was flying past me in my room! But I can see also the problems with DNR which at times does stand out pretty obvious but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as Predator's Ultimate Edition blu-ray DNR at all.

I haven't seen the others and to be fair I'm not really inclined to. The only one I might check out for the 1080p resolution and HD sound is ROTS since that one was quite good on DVD already.

It's a shame they couldn't do the same colour grading for the OT like they did for TPM. That really does boggle my mind a bit - how Lucas can get the prequels to look spot on colour wise but not the OT - is he beyond caring for the OT now? I really hoped they would fix ROTJ colour problems (I still think it looks the worst of OT in terms of colour) especially the forest scenes having too much blue hue over the greens.

Thank you for starting a torrent for this Grisan. I am going to upload it to the file-sharing sites still, just for those who prefer not to depend on torrents. I've ripped the ESB disc with no read errors, ripping ROTJ now.

EDIT: I will either update my post or post again when each DVD is complete, then you can feel free to PM me for the links.

Ah cool. Thanks Falcon. Like many here, I've been searching for these for years! It's nice to see other versions of the 1997 SE preserved. I've always felt they've been under appreciated over the years.

I hope you enjoy the Technicolor discs and find them worth the newsgroup subscription! ;) Just so you know I don't plan to re-author the '97SE DVDs but simply release a set of fixed audio files and instructions on how to apply the fixed audio to the DVD ISO files.

If you have the hard drive space you could download the '97SE DVDs now and then just download the audio fix files when I release them. Just a thought :)

Is this still happening Lee? I really liked your 97SE versions.

Edit: Just a thought, is it possible to sync the 5.1 from the 2004 versions with these? Although the 5.1 audio of the 1997 SE would indeed be much better - especially for ROTJ over the 2004 one. ;-)

Anyway, when I find the time to upload this for you, do you want to have it color corrected or do you just want me to release it as it is, along with a bright canyon where R2 get captured?

I do know that some people enjoy to just have the transfers preserved as is, so I was just wondering.

Oh wow that was fast for you to capture it. My advice is not to color correct it, as this release does have such an interesting color palette; furthermore, it's the palette I saw the Unaltered ANH as a child. The sunset is mindblowingly different and that's just utterly spectacular.

YES! Totally agree.
