Everything looks great in those latest screenies. It's just nice to see it looking more how it was before the teal shift but with the extra definition that comes with the latest blu-ray transfer.

Another good test shot is when Arnie beats up those punks, and you can see the lighting around him is blue in the previous releases.

That looks fantastic!

AVCHD 24p playback problem
Time

Both my PS3 and Sony blu-ray player have the 24p/24hz setting enabled and blu-rays play fine and work at 24p/24hz, it's just other video content does not - even though the frame rate is 23.97fps!

My TV is a year old Panasonic GT30 Plasma, which has no problem doing 24Hz playback on blu-ray movies.

Taking all things into account, someone suggested to me the file structure of the AVCHD, so I'm assuming maybe it is not reading it right and defaulting to 60Hz? I'm going to try and play with the file structure of AVCHD and see if that changes anything - maybe I'm not doing it right!

Info: Terminator 2 - in search of the theatrical sound mix...
Time

Is this the first DVD you were referring to:

?

I have this one. The picture is more natural compared to the Ultimate Edition which features heavy contrast boosting and Edge Enhancement. I have listened to the mix a few times and compared it in the past and it seems a little quieter than other releases from memory, but not sure of the specifics. The first release Region A blu-ray is also a lot quieter than the later T2 blu-ray releases, and my HD-DVD sounds (to my ears) the same as the latest T2 blu-rays.

Info Wanted: Superman laserdisc audio - has anyone preserved the laserdisc audio?
Time

I thought while we’re all trying to preserve various bits and pieces from laserdiscs lately, that I would ask if anyone has successfully ripped PCM audio from any of the Superman laserdiscs?

I understand the blu-rays have the original 1978 audio in DTS-HD, but I would like to try and preserve the original 1978 sound from the laserdisc and to also see if there are any real differences. And it would be nice to sync the ld audio with the blu-rays as other optional tracks.

Furthermore, alternatively, we could try and preserve the whole laserdisc with the video as well, as I know some people have always wanted to see the colour timing before it changed on DVD and Blu-ray (myself included) but I assume this is a bigger undertaking.

Not sure how many are fans, but thought I would ask anyway!

What about Adywan's color corrected versions?

Didn't he do ANH & TESB?

He used the 2004 HDTV/DVD sources I believe, which are pretty much the 2004 Special Editions not the 1997 ones.

As for his colour correction, I believe he simply tried to colour correct the 2004 sources back to how they were before 2004, but I don't know the specifics.

I don't know about ANH, but Adywan did recreate the 1997 Special Edition of TESB using the 2004 HDTV sources, and he reinstated the original Emperor using other sources, I assume from one of the '97 DVB captures, although I don't know the specifics. His colour correction was excellent, and it was released @ 1080p. The 5.1 Laserdisc soundtrack is also present.

You're right, he did use other sources other than the 2004 HDTV for his 1997 recreation, but how much more other than the emperor and audio I don't know.

If you want the 1997 Special Editions in their most complete form, original colour timing, original dodgy effects (old CGI Jabba) then dark_jedi's upscale will be the best seeing as You_Too just confirmed they are using TB mainly. Ady's is a good compromise though if you want the absolute best picture detail since it's the 2004 video source. Depends what you are looking for really.

Wow, so the DCP version isn't as blown out? I have missed a couple opportunities to see the film in digital because I assume it'd just be a 4K straight from the Blu-ray master (as with Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, etc.)

Yup, pretty much. It was my first time seeing it on the big screen, and I was expecting it to look exactly like the blu-ray, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it kept the same colour timing as the blu-ray but the contrast was waaay better than the blu-ray. I couldn't believe my eyes, as it looked perfect!

I am hoping if and when they release the 4K remaster that is rumoured to be for the new 4K Blu-ray, that the contrast will mirror what I saw at the cinema. And then hopefully, which then follows, a 1080p version!

Does anyone know if the original DVB captures are available somewhere? I'd even settle for a DVD9 version over the DVD5one.

:)

The best version of the 1997 SE picture wise is going to be dark_jedi's since he is using multiple sources and then upscaling them to 720p with other tweaks to the picture.

From the sample I've seen, these will be the best looking versions of the 1997 SE, and if you want to watch 1997 SE on a rainy day, I suggest you keep an eye on these.

This is probably your best option.

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)

Well, all I can say is the latest sample looks stunning on my TV. I love all the dirt, noise, grain, whatever, it makes the whole thing look like an old film print - especially with the colours! It actually looks like I am watching Star Wars for the first time as it was originally intended.

This is some of the best preservation work I have seen EVER. The attention to detail is immense!

I don't mean to keep shifting the topic away from the sound mix, but from what I can tell, the Blu-ray color timing seems closER to the 70mm print I saw at American Cinematheque. That was Halloween 2010, but I still specifically remember being surprised that the print looked closer to the Blu-ray than I expected it would.

Make no mistake, the Blu doesn't truly replicate the look of the original photochemical timing. I remember the 70mm print having more green than I expected, but the modern transfers do seem to take it even farther with the green/cyan cast. The modern transfer is also too bright, especially in the midtone range, and we already know the contrast is blown out, but I was still surprised at how that 1984 print looked more like the newer transfers than I ever thought it would.

Someone in the UK has a Derann 16mm print; this digital camera recording of a projection is too dark, and makes it look more yellow than it actually is (I believe LPP tends yellow-green?), but when I white-balanced the title, it looked closer to the new transfers than the old ones. The campus doesn't look as drab and low-contrast as the 1999 transfer, that's for sure.

Yes, I do think a retiming project using the Blu-ray would be great, especially combined with these sound mixes. If only we could get in contact with this guy who has the 16mm print, it could make a great color reference...

What's also surprising is I recently dug out my laserdisc copy and noticed that the colours were much, much, closer than I expected to the blu-ray. It would be interesting to see if the Criterion laserdisc is different.

I haven't seen an original print of Ghostbusters, but I did see a digital one over a year ago, which had less contrast problems than the blu-ray. I assumed this was either because of the way the projector was calibrated or there is actually a new digital master out there (not the same as the blu-ray) which has fixed the blown out contrast (rumours suggest there is a new 4K remaster coming out in 4K Blu-ray format at some point - maybe it was testing the waters with that?).

Actually, thinking about it, the laserdisc colours and contrast is closer to the digital version I saw at the cinema - which looks fab!

^ No contest. These are the ultimate SE versions of the movies for me as well.

If a certain company with a mouse as their mascot was smart they'd hire AdY and pay him whatever he wanted for future re-releases.

It's such a shame that the 'pros' at ILM mostly just paid lip service when it came to fixing things. THREE friggin' passes were made on tweaking these movies and they still failed in so many areas.

Now that Disney own Star Wars, who knows whether they might hire Ady in the future, especially when the opportunity for another cash in emerges with the release of the new films on the horizon. ;-)

I have the Criterion and '92 RCA/Columbia discs on their way to me. I'll compare the two tracks and sync the winner (hopefully it won't be an apples and oranges situation - hybrids give me a headache).

By the way, I'll be syncing to the official BD rather than any less official versions - I figure that what it loses in accuracy it gains in availability (so my track will be more useful to more people). That said, if someone else would like to put some colour work in on the video, that would indeed be swell.

Awesome news!

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)

The green actually reminds me of some of the footage that was shown in a few Star Wars documentaries which came from an unmodified print. There was a thread where I posted some good screenshots demonstrating this, but I can't find it now! Grr.

The best example I saw was when Vader walked down a corridor to meet Obi-wan, and all the panels on the wall had a slight green shift to them.

All jokes aside, I do have a VCR and it would be fun to transfer to VHS and see what it looks like on the old format. Although I'm not sure whether letterbox or fullscan would be better.

Believe it or not, i am actually making this right now!

I converted the movie to PAL 25fps with a 4% speed up. French audio/French crawl. But it's still quite interesting. I've created a DVD and i'm capturing it on a VHS. I will upload a sample here as soon as possible ;)

Edit: I'm using the V2.0 and i'm doing it in letterbox.

LOL! that's awesome!

LOL!

In all seriousness though, I hope I am not forgotten as I did contribute towards the project a few years ago.

Kidding of course.

I am not bothered what happens to the credits, a nice thank you to everyone is more than enough in my opinion. The biggest thank you will of course be knowing that our help has played a part in helping to make this wonderful enhancement/edit of a truly magnificent film!
