STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

If it’s up for a vote I am all for cutting Boba Fett entirely from the movie. There’s an iteration of a Yads edit where this is done and it is a huge improvement, there’s actually a lot cut from the Jabba’s Palace scene and it works much better. With the new economy gained from trimming things like dumb humor, needless scenes like the torture droid and all of Boba Fett the whole sequence gains an economy and speed that conveys that Luke’s Jedi powers have grown and he is not someone to be messed with. He has a plan, he comes in and executes it and this set piece is done and we move on to the rest of the movie.

You may want to read Rinzler’s book about the making of ROTJ, it contradicts what you’re saying.

Ewoks … They are absolutely ridiculous and only exist to appeal kids and to sell toys.

Wrong. It’s an urban legend. Absolutely nothing to do with kids and toys.
They only exist because Chewbacca got a main role, therefore they could not be Wookies anymore, as they were in early drafts.
Since it is impossible to replace Ewoks with Wookies, getting rid of Ewoks is getting rid of Star Wars, as they were always part of it, from the very first draft.

Having paid to see ESB in the theater 96 times in 1980

For real?!

I can’t even count how many times I saw Star Wars (now Ep4) in theaters and drive ins across the releases. I know one summer I saw it at a theater that charged $1.50 for a ticket and I would sit through it twice in an afternoon while my dad and brother played golf. I did that every weekend that summer.

I never noticed a continuity issue until just now (saw the movie opening week in 1980 and, well, a lot since then).
Leia orders the evacuation of the rest of the rebels during the battle on Hoth and C3PO is standing next to her, the next scene is a very brief one of Han and Chewie arguing about Falcon repairs and then, not even thirty seconds later, there’s C3PO in the hanger while R2 is being loaded into Luke’s x wing. Either the hanger and the command center are a lot closer to each other then the subsequent escape would have you believe (doesn’t sound like a good strategic decision if you ask me) or C3PO can really haul tin.

Now that the moment’s nearly here, I guess it’s finally time for me to ask something I’ve been mulling over for a while now. Unfortunately, in addition to the fact that I have an extremely slow Internet connection, I also don’t have access to either a DVD or a Blu-ray burner. I was hoping that my circumstances would change before ESB:R was released, but now it’s obvious that won’t happen. So, although I’m a little embarrassed to ask, I wondering if there’s anyone who might consider helping me out by burning me a copy and mailing it to me? Or am I not allowed to ask for that? I’d certainly pay for postage and the cost of the disc. Please advise, friends!

I understand where you’re coming from. I would be happy with a torrent connection to a mp4 file without having to join the spleen or futz around with jdownloader (meganz would be nice). There’s a portion of his audience that is better served via meat and potatoes routes.

I’ve suggested before that for future Adywan projects there needs to be two threads
One thread is news and nothing but.
The other thread is the official thread for whining and moaning that he isn’t doing what you want and can’t you put Thrawn and Grevious in Return of the Jedi and how much longer is it going to take and that column is 1mm off in the frame and it drives me nuts I thought that your edits were about quality control and are we there yet and will the wampa have cling ons in its fur because you know it’s pretty hairy and why don’t you answer my pms am I on your ignore list ady…

I always see new posts for this thread that I then click into to read what people are discussing about revisited and always end up just reading random bullshit LOL (well about 9/10 times).

It would be nice to actually talk about Ady’s revisited once in a while guys. It’s been a long wait but now we have a release month and I’ve had to read through a page or two about smh?

SMH…

The Worst Star Wars Characters

Darth Kylo Brat of Ren/
A whole trilogy revolves around this guy and just such a halfbaked trainwreck of stupid.

(talking with his girlfriend via holo)
Yeah I’m at the Jedi Academy. I hate this place. Yeah it’s run by my stupid uncle. Blows up a Death Star, coulda got all sort of babes but no he’s got to be all celibate and one with the force. No, my parents don’t get me so they sent me here to get rid of me. I hate it. I think I’m going to kill everyone here, that’ll show 'em."

Is the theater where you saw Star Wars still standing ?
Time

I saw it in seven different locations, the first one, a multiplex is still existent as a larger multiplex, I no longer live in that city and haven’t seen a movie at that location since 1989.

The second theater, once a luxury hotel in my hometown, later turned into a movie theater and is now a retirement home for people on a fixed income.

The outdoor theater that I saw it at is long gone, no idea what is on that real estate now.

Venue #4 charged me a dollar and I would sit through it twice while my late brother and father went off to play golf. Probably saw it 15 times that way on that re-release. The building exists still and I think that the theater has been repurposed to a music venue.

The next venue was a free standing movie theater in the parking lot of a mall, the mall is still going but the theater is a Toys R Us, also still going. I saw Star Wars there when Saturday Night Fever was big and the theater had a large cardboard cutout of Travolta with the arm and finger pointing up, I remember thinking who would want to see that when you can see Star Wars?

I saw the 1997 re-release (does this count, too?) at a little four screen tucked into a mall on a college campus, the mall was razed over a decade ago and now there’s a new mall and high rise student housing there.

Lastly, my childhood home where I watched the Ken Films Super 8 cutdowns still exists. The city that it is in is a casualty of 35 years of trickle down economics and the neighborhood has gone to hell. The currently owners have failed to maintain it as a shrine to my youth.

Rogue One: The Battle of Scarif fan edit (Released)
Time

Very nicely done.
I do have a question, are you thinking of doing a v2.0 of this or is it done?
The music is nice, I personally am fine with the original score however this is a nice take on it.
The reason I am asking is that the jumping from story arc to story arc could be tightened up even more. For example, there’s three shortish scenes of Jyn and Cassian having a shootout at the records tower as they try to hang on, currently they’re individual scenes and if you combine them the scene plays out quite well. The first two scenes are able to be recut together fairly easily, the last one needs help with the music transitions which you’ve ably demonstrated your skill with.
I’ve taken a crack at consolidating as many scenes as possible, not cutting for the sake of cutting instead the goal being a movie where there isn’t so much cutting back and forth so if it is watched before A New Hope the editing styles feel a little closer than they currently exist.
The music cues in this one are a bear, though.

When will suggestions for Return of the Jedi: Revisited be open?

There needs to be two threads.
One is news and updates on progress. No commentary, no whining, no kvetching, no bitching. Updates and that is it. Mods delete with an iron keyboard.
The other thread would be suggestions and comments on released preview clips.

Why the future SW films concern me
Time

I look at the franchises as fanfiction. Some of it is quite good (TESB) and most of it is quite bad (everything else, yes that includes ROTJ).

What bothers me is the merchandising juggernaut. I've seen a lot of the recent SW toys and they're junk. A lot of the pages carrying news about TFA carry a lot of news about the toys and people (adults I am guessing) are going nuts about the toys.

I don't really care about the toys. I know the merchandising paid for the brand as we know it today, but really, a lot of what has been produced is pretty awful. Screw all the toys, the action figures, etc. Please give me a good movie. I'm not expecting sequel quality of TESB but please, at least a lot better than ROTJ/PT.

Visually, and imagination-wise, I don't see how a severed hand clutching a lost weapon is not more interesting than simply falling debris.

For starters there is no hand or lightsaber present while Luke goes skating through the gerbil tube. Seeing as the hand was severed a couple of minutes prior to him taking a leap I would think that it would be present in the gerbil tube on his trip through it. There's a whole lotta places in that big wind tunnel that it could have been sucked into, the thought of it just happening to go down the same pipe as Luke did is pretty lame, the thought of someone recovering it from where ever it landed is even lamer.

It's not so much an issue of whether it is interesting or not but whether it is plausible based on what is in the frame of the movie.

Looking great Adywan, thanks for the clip :-)

On a side note can anyone tell me what it is that falls towards Bespin as Luke lands on the weathervane?

I've never been able to figure it out.

Cheers, Paul

I always thought that the stuff falling was, well, just stuff. I think it was more just a device to show a sense of perspective, you know, holy cow it's a long way down from there and some stuff falling takes your eyes in the direction of the thing that was falling.

I am hoping that the whole spoiler thing is taken out of context. I do think it's lame that someone found Luke's lightsaber from TESB (are you going to tell me that Vader didn't give Bespin a full cavity search for that item? Can he sense it by the force? After all it does have his families Midichlorians in the hand....). Anyhow, if the full spoiler as described actually happens in E7 that would be just lame....huge lame, probably bathed in lens flare.

Idea: What if there was only one Death Star?
Time

A lot of the movie is a rehash of the other ones and not very creative. That's why it's the worst one of the OT.

When I first saw a trailer that had the partially constructed Death Star I thought that the Empire was trying to repair their battle station that exploded in ANH and I thought that was a cool idea. I used to think that it was lazy that they were making another Death Star but hey, it's a tool of war and a pretty good one at that. Zapping a whole planet in a few seconds pretty much ends any war there.

Look at the US nuclear arsenal. Did we stop with just one A Bomb?

If you conceptualize the DSII that way maybe it is easier to swallow, move to more important things like minimizing bad puppetry, cornball throwaway lines, ewoks....

One of the best ROTJ fanedit that I've seen was one of the Yads ones that removed Boba Fett entirely.

Idea: What if there was only one Death Star?
Time

Short of refilming and redubbing parts of the movie this is the weakest link of the OT.

Stick with what you have and try to work with that to improve it.

You're able to read a lot of posts here, some common things that people do is move Luke on Dagobah to the beginning of the movie and cut a lot of the cutesy dialogue throughout the movie.

In my cut I moved Luke at Dagobah to the beginning of the show.

I also cut Ben entirely. He doesn't really do anything for the movie and just barfs up a lot of things said in the last two movies - aside from talking about Leia.

NOW Luke doesn't know that Leia is his sister.

Later in the movie I had to trim some of the dialogue when Luke and Leia say goodbye. No loss, it's a bad scene that goes on too long and really has a lot to lose.

Now the kicker comes in during the final lightsaber duel. Vader uses the force and when probing Luke's feelings about his friends pieces together that Leia is Luke's sister. NOW we have the other and it also validates Luke losing his s*** during the final saber battle, it is literally a revelation to everyone in the Emperor's throne room, Vader included. It also makes a nice call back for folks who like that sort of thing as it was Vader who told Luke in the last movie that he was his dad, now it's Vader telling Luke he has a sister, too.

Just some ideas for you to work with there, cruise through these boards and you will find more.

What is the rarest video in your collection?
Time

boon23 said:

Now I've got it. The rarest video in my collection is a mini fanedit I made: I cut out the dream sequence from th emovie Grand Canyon. Nothing else. But it improves the movie a lot for me. I think no one else has this.

But but but but....my mind boggles.

I do a lot of fanedit stuff myself, too, some along these lines. Mostly I put deleted scenes back in movies and tweak tv shows. I've done all of The Walking Dead to fix various issues and am working on a LOST with no flashbacks and in chronological order, almost done with season 3.

The closest that I did to this was adding the beginning of Terrance Malnick's Tree of Life to Prometheus. I had to cut all the voice overs so basically we now get the creation of the universe and planets, then the engineers arrive, then you get dinosaurs and a comet comes and wipes them out. Cut to the TED talk by Wayland about all the things that technology will do for people if you join him on the ride...
