Info Wanted: has anyone preserved 'Dead Poets Society - Extended TV Cut'?

I have a german DVD of it w/ all the deleted scenes from the TV version - it would be cool if someone created a widescreen version of it.

What is the runtime of the DVD? Are the deleted scenes inserted into the movie? If not, what kind of quality are they in? Is it not widescreen? Can I ask any more questions????

I just purchased a Widescreen Laserdisc of the extended cut. Hopefully I can get it transferred soon.

Does anyone have this preserved? There was a special edition LaserDisc with this cut, but it’s never been released anywhere else. I copied the LD onto VHS years ago. I can’t find the LD anymore, does anyone have this? There was about 14 extra minutes if I remember correctly, and I really liked this cut better.

The “special edition” DVD has about 4 minutes of “rough takes”, or something of that nature, but none match the scenes on the LD if I’m not mistaken.

I may torrent the SL disc or a Divx sometime soon. Any preferences?

(SPOILER) new "STAR TREK" 2009 spoiler thread (SPOILER)

I liked Enterprise. TOS has it's moments, and I love it for the nostalgia, but it has not aged well. But, it is a relatively short series, so just watch it for the background. The movies are pretty good all around, minus a few parts, and a couple of stinkers. The next generation is pretty awesome, minus some tiny things. Never really got into anything after that.

any way to replace agent smith's voice with frank welker's ? LOL

You get him to say the lines into a nice microphone, and I'm on it. While you're at it, get Peter Cullen to recite the ending speech.

i love the 1986 animated movie and hate the michael bay turd, is there any way your fan edit comes closer to the 1980 cartoons?

I would say if you totally hate the "Michael Bay turd", that you probably won't like mine much more(complete turd in=partial turd out). However, if you dislike certain parts of the movie, because they're distracting to the main plot, you will probably like it. I love the old cartoons, but you've got to admit some of that old stuff was pretty lame too (see Seaspray's voice, and Seaspray falling in love with an alien girl). I don't know if the material is there to make it just like G1. All I could do was make it closer to how I would have made a Transformers movie.

skyjedi2005 said:

and the new animated series which looks worse than tartakoskys clone wars don't even get me started on that.

Yeah, I'm not really into that new series. It just seems like Transformers for little pansy boys. They should all strap on knee pads and bike helmets when they're running around, someone might get hurt.

skyjedi2005 said:

as far as i'm concerned this is another alternate universe transformers and has nothing to do with the official universe cannon, i'm speaking of the bay movie.

It can't be canon for the G1 continuity, because it everything happens differently than either the cartoons or the comics. It is an alternate universe. That said, I'm OK with that universe, I just don't like some of the dialogue used in it. I'm thinking/hoping that Bay and co. will delve more into the Transformers mythos with the next two movies. If you look at the first movie as more of an introduction (for the masses) to the Transformers, and as part of a trilogy, it's a little more acceptable. I talked to serveral people who watched the movie an told me that they thought that not much happened. When I explained to them that it was a trilogy, they were more receptive to the events that occurred in the film. I believe this was a planned trilogy, and they knew that they had time to stretch out. If you put robots in the whole (first) movie, you will do two things: Make your budget completely ridiculous, and alienate people who are not into giant creepy robots having giant crazy wars. And that equals the end of the franchise. It sucks that money runs these things, but someone has to pay ILM and Jon Voight. ;) I'm not defending all of Mike Bay's actions, but at the end of the day they did have to sell tickets to continue the series in bigger (and hopefully better) ways.

skyjedi2005 said:

i would put classic g1 first then the simon furmon comics canon, and even the japan only headmasters series before this movie in terms of order of preference.

It's a shame that Furman was not deeply entrenched in the writing of this movie.

never mind that the live action transformers movie a misnomer since it was all fake cgi animated, was a rip off of literally every hollywood blockbuster i have ever seen. not suprising since the only good movie michael bay ever directed was the rock and that was a rip off of both james bond and indiana jones.

Were they supposed to build real transforming robots? I was pretty impressed with the cgi, minus some of the excessive motion blur and some of the robot designs.

Bay is Bay, and he has the Transformers, and nothing is going to change that. I'm just going to try and make the best out of what we got, and enjoy it as much as possible. All of Bay's movies have a great film wrapped in a big layer of cheese. My mission in fanediting is to peel off that cheese. I think I'll be concentrating on Bay's films, and some similar filmmakers with my edits (see Roland Emmerich).

Anyway long story short, try the edit. If you don't like it, give me your ideas for the next cut . And if you don't like that one, wait for my G1 cut. And if you don't like that one, well, pester Sony to release the unaltered G1 DVD sets.

Ok so I've watched your complete edit of the film. My opinion: almost perfect. Your cutting was good. There's a lot of fast cutting in the film of course (official release), some of it not great, so to edit around some of those scenes is a bit tricky. I think you pulled it off very well. The bumblebee "pissing scene" was a tricky scene to edit but it still worked, you did the best you could with it.

The only thing for me that makes this a one or two percent less then a perfect edit are a very few teeny tiny cuts that I don't think you needed to make. The "perfect day" scene for example, only lasts a few seconds but shows characters actually being characters. I don't think the "bring the rain" line needed to be cut. In discussing the film with my uncle (a former Marine who served in Lebanon) he claims that it's not uncommon for "hyped up phrases" to be included in comm traffic in the heat of combat. In any case, I think we can all agree that Bay films in general are very firm in the realm of disbelief, this film very much included. Having said that, It's a hero saying his hero line having his hero moment, and this is of course a hero film. I also don't mind the "back cheek" moment, I think the humor works.

These are all of course personal preferences. And other then these small things I think the cutting was perfect. I always thought the end battle scene was a bit of a mess in the editing and you improved it A LOT. So bottom line, much rather watch this over the other.

So if you're serious about that focuspuller edition you let me know. ;)

Thank you, I take that as quite the compliment.

I'm trying to talk one of the better graphics editors on the forums to help me really fix the bumblebee pissing scene, by covering up the fact that the agents are wet. Again, at this point I chalk it to them sweating.

Sometimes all the fast cutting helped, sometimes it was a motherf*#ker to get around. I'm most proud of my tiny cuts, that no one will notice, like tightening up the shot where the red haired soldier (scut farkus from A Christmas Story, btw) gets spiked by Scorponok, and when Scorponoks tail pops up on the table. It was weird having to make Michael Bay cuts shorter, to make the action a little faster (confused smiley face). If you go through the cuts list with the movie, you'll see a ton of little things that you probably wouldn't notice otherwise. I would almost recommend watching the theatrical version right before watching my edit.

I understand your thoughts on the "perfect day speech, it just seemed a little too cheesy, IMO. It's not a horrible scene, just not my favorite. To be honest, it was the first cut on my first fanedit, so maybe I was just excited to be cutting anything!

"Bring the rain". I don't know. I'm sure that there is some chatter, but it is discouraged in general according to my younger military sources. It just seemed a little overacted. Not an unusual thing in a Bay movie, but I didn't feel it was needed either way. I fought with that decision for a long time, cutting and reinstating it several times. Maybe in the end I just felt I had to cut it, since I had so much time into getting it right! ;)

"Left cheek, left check, left cheek!" With this one, it seemed that it was a bit unrealistic (yeah, even in a movie with giant alien robots) for him to repeat it three times. I mean, he's fighting an enemy like he's never seen before, and he has time to say that three times, rather than just unloading his gun on a giant killing machine? Nah. So I tried to cut it down to 1 "left cheek", but it just wasn't smooth. That would have gone against my main point of the first cut, which was keep all the cuts as seamless as possible. I've seen too many edits where people get cut-happy, and it ruins an otherwise decent fanedit.

When I start the second cut, I'll make a quick focuspuller edit, but I can't put it out, because I'm really against the "left cheek" scene. When my wife found out I was editing Transformers, it was the first thing she asked about!

Again, thank you for the honest review, I'm floored that people seem to be liking my edit.

I had the same issue with file size problems. I'm using PS 7 (I know, way old). If I did a plain "Save As" and then selected JPG, I couldn't get the file size anywhere near 5K without horrible quality. I ended up choosing "Save for Web". This brings up a separate window with options. I just dragged the quality slider to the left until it was under 5K. I was able to get good quality (as my avatar shows). The weird thing is that I was able to go with the equivalent of "high" quality using this method, the same level of quality of my first attempted and failed method. Hope this helps. Your mileage may vary.

It might also be a problem with PS saving an icon of the image. That takes up file space as well. If you have the "Save for Web" option give it a try.

Thanks for showing how to do this in photoshop! I was convinced my avatar was going to have to be a tiny, blurry piece of crap! I pointed to this thread in the "forum bugs" topic.

I can not upload my avatar. I keep getting the error message about my picture being larger than 5k.

I shrunk it down to 40x40, with the lowest quality settings (photoshop), and it still won't take it. How are you guys making your avatars small enough to fit, while keeping the picture clear?

EDIT:

Never mind. I found a good tutorial on how to fix it in photoshop over in "off topic" under the topic "avatar issues".

The sound of the GAU-8 gun is so fucking awesome and I was disappointed when I saw Transformers and found out they used some dumb standard machine gun sounds or something. The A-10 in Transformers sounds like it's firering a bb-gun or something. Did you by any chance change this for your edit? Probably not. Damn, why didn't I think of this before you finished your edit.
Anyway, I'll download your edit and check it out. It sounds pretty cool.

Nope, I didn't know enough about the A-10 to know the difference. If you can supply me with a good clean ac3 (preferably 5.1 mix) of it, I'll try to get it into the next cut. I did consult with some military friends about the "bring the rain" line, and they told me that it was unrealistic in that military personnel would not add extra chatter when engaging an enemy. So that went bye-bye.

I haven't seen this yet but I'm hoping for the best. Obviously the film could use improvement.

I will say that I thought I read that you removed The "perfect day" scene among soldiers, I hope this not the case. Sappy or not, it's one of the few human moments that really works in the film for me. It also helps humanizes them instead of them simply bieng Micheal Bay puppets.

Whoops. Tell you what. If you want it back in there, I might make a special focuspuller edition for you. Or if you're handy with the editing, you can pop it back in easy enough.

I didn't really mind the scene, I was just trying to get into the story a little faster. Really, I didn't mind the movie as it was released (minus a couple of real cringe-worthy moments), so it's not like I was trying to dismantle the movie out of hatred for it, I was just trying to tighten it up. The hard cut will probably remove the whole soldiers intro scene, and just go right into Blackout heading towards the base.

I hope you guys are finding this, I would like some feedback on it, to possibly apply to the next cut.
