The most pathetic drivel about the prequels i have ever read.

you know, Shmi's unlikely, unsatisfactory 'explanation' to Qui-Gon in TPM could also be interpreted as a complete 'lie' to Qui-Gon when he has the audacity to ask about it, lol.  At the end of the day, we don't get to know what 'kind' of slavery she's involved in, and maybe she didn't 'know' who Anakin's dad was...  And although there's been some comments about how a 'protocol' droid seemed an unlikely choice to help her out...it would be perfect for interpretive dealings with various alien unsavoury types on her behalf/Watto's behalf, if you get my meaning...  No, no, surely not...)

Would explain why Watto was much more willing to give up the boy. His mom was the money maker. Otherwise you'd think he'd rather keep the younger one who would live longer, become physically stronger and therefore do more work.

I hope Ady will forgive my rough vandalism but if his bridge shot can't be used in ESB:R maybe it could be reworked for a ROTJ edit, either as a set up for The Executor approaching the Death Star or Vader musing on the landing of the Tydirium.

Recycled Ady Shot

I really like that shot, it's a shame ady won't be using it in ESB:R. Hopefully it might make a return in RotJ:R though...

I love this shot too, but I'd rather see it in Jedi than in Empire. Jedi needs more spicing up.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?
Time

Puggo - Jar Jar's Yoda said:

Wrong question.  I actually enjoyed many of the changes... maybe if I went through them one by one, I might discover that I "liked" most of them.  The changes in the SE are all fine... but the changes in the SE as permanent replacements for the original corresponding scenes in the OT are absolutely unacceptable, whether I like them or not... every single one of them. You can't change history because you like the revised version better.

Yeah, I think most (hopefully all) of us would agree. That's what brought me here in the first place.

ANH:

- The new canyon matte and the darkening of the scene
- New sandcrawler shot
- 2004 binary sunset fix
- Mos Eisley matte
- 1997 landspeeder approach
- Wolfman replacements in the cantina
- New Falcon departure from Mos Eisley
- 2004 static when Luke taps his stormtrooper helmet
- 2004 cell block perspective fix
- Improved Death Star chasm echo
- "Close the blast doors!" (admittedly not really a change)
- 2004 tractor beam lettering replacement
- 2004 rotoscoping of Vader's saber while the blast door closes
- Actually seeing the Falcon landing on Yavin IV
- The Biggs scene
- New X-wing takeoff
- Some CG in the Battle of Yavin (but not all of it)

ESB:

- Added shot of Slave I following the Falcon
- Some (but not all) of the expanded Cloud City exteriors (I don't like the new interior windows)
- Restored music cue when Slave I takes off
- Adding the second hatch door to the Falcon
- 2004 fix to backwards Imperial rank insignias

ROTJ:

- Sail barge shadow fixes
- Ropes around Han's feet while he's trying to save Lando
- Removal of Anakin's eyebrows
- Luke congratulating Wedge at the end

I agree with this list. Guess I like more of the changes than I thought.

But what is the "2004 tractor beam lettering replacement"?

I hate that the prequels made no distinction between a Jedi Knight and a Jedi Master - they were merely ranks in the prequels.  Before the prequels, I'd always assumed that Knights were the warriors with lightsabers, and the Masters never used weapons of any kind, and were the wise old ones in tune with the Force who guided the Jedi Knights without fighting themselves.  Obi-Wan was a Knight, Yoda was a Master.

Yet another missed opportunity for the prequels.

YES! I always thought that too!

Also, why did the Jedi live on a planet covered with cities and busy air traffic and loud noises? I figured they would live on a planet full of nature and clean air where they could live and meditate in peace without distraction. Guess I just don't understand... no, wait, guess it's just stupid.

the Fisher hosting segments are not as vibrant as Billy Dee's but she was either allowed more room to speak her mind or took advantage of the situation, so the segments are a little more interesting.

What? Carrie Fisher speaking her mind? Surely not! ; )

I hope the Empire segments can be found. I'd love to see em all again.

Essentially... Lucas produced a million dollar fan-edit, since they were other people's films, even though he had a hand in them. Like all fan edits, his version is good in places, bad in places, with some changes that are appreciated and others that are bewildering, but at the end of the day you would never want them to replace the original.

That's very well put. I guess if things went George's way back in '88, he'd have been sued in '97.

...So, basically, while I agree he should have the right to play with Star Wars to his heart's desire as long as the original version is preserved, I don't think he has any business meddling with the other two films without the consent of at least the guys who actually directed them.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. Didn't Kersh say that he was happy with the SE of Empire? I remember reading that he was happy that it was mostly unchanged and liked the improved sound and picture quality. Still, he had no say in what was or wasn't done to it.

I just can't believe he spoke out against every single thing he did to his own films.

I don't mind what he's done to his films. I think the creator should be able to do anything they want with their product. It's the disregard of preserving the originals that bothers me and I feel that's where George becomes a hypocrite. A colorized version of Night Of The Living Dead doesn't bother me because the original black and white version has been preserved and made widely available in HD formats. Same should be done for every film.

I wish we had an audio recording of this. It would make an excellent basis for a video coupled with footage of the SE.
Maybe we can find someone to impersonate Lucas and recreate it.

Anybody know who did his voice on the Clerks animated episode he was in? That would be great... too funny for the cause, but great.

Nice! That was fast! I realize that this may be the most annoying question in the world, but do you have any idea when this might be finished? I'm not trying to sound impatient, I'll wait as long as it takes with a smile on my face. Just wondering if maybe there was a visible light at the end of the tunnel.

Tell 'em, George! Can we get a time machine and bring this guy back here to bitchsmack his future self?

I'm convinced that Lucas died somewhere around 1990 and was replaced by a brain damaged clone. Can we trade new Lucas in for dead Lucas? And while we're at it, can we trade the guys from Nickleback in for the Ramones?

Damn. Is it only Jedi or is the problem occurring on the other two as well? And honestly, if those are the only instances of this problem, it really won't bother me too much.

Luke vs Han

Ok, lets just say hypothetically that Lucas never decided to make Luke and Leia brother and sister in ROTJ.  Is there anybody out there who thinks Leia should have gotten with Luke instead?  Why or why not?  Just something I've been thinking about a lot recently after listening to the radio drama again.

Empire would have to be very different for that to happen.  I think at the end of Star Wars, she could lean either way, but once Empire starts, it is all Han.

I'll never be able to see Leia going for Luke or any kinda "love triangle" scenario in the trilogy. Seems to me that the chemistry between Han and Leia starts immediately and Sluggo is right, Empire would be a totally different film. The couple spend the entire film becomeing closer and getting to know one another, Leia tells Han she loves him, yet some people STILL thought there was a chance for Luke in Jedi? Madness.

Granted, I haven't seen the finished clip, but I suspect this is a case of knowing that it's a still image effecting the way you watch the scene. If you didn't know, it would just look like the Emperor is sitting very still, and that is kind of creepy in its own right, isn't it?

Yeah, being familiar with the image does have it's effects, but I recognized the star destroyers during the ANH:R Death Star reveal from other scenes in the trilogy and it didn't bother me or take me out of the scene because it looked great. Again, I haven't seen the final clip, I'm just worried that every time I see it I'll think of old Conan O'Brien clips.

Ady, clearly some folk don't pay attention to movies very much. Most actors hardly EVER blink on screen when they're delivering lines, unless it's deliberately done to convey an emotion or thought.

Pick any movie with decent actors in it and watch how little you see them blink, and watch someone without them knowing and see the difference.

The eyes may be static, but the lack of blinking isn't the reason.

Yes, but they are also usually gesturing with their hands, moving their heads and bodies and dozen other things that living people do. The thing with this emperor head is that it's a still picture, and from what very little I've seen of it, it looks like a still picture... Still looks better than the other versions though lol. A little eye movement would really help make it seem alive. The blinking old lady/ape face in the original looked more alive than the unblinking straight staring Halloween mask version in '04 does.

Actually the Emperor hardly blinks at all in Jedi. For example, look at the scene where the Emperor is goading Luke while he watches the battle, then snaps and uses his sabre. Throughout the whole speech he doesn't blink once. The same thing in other scenes

Ture. You win!

I actually watched all the emperor scenes from Jedi this afternoon and was returning to this thread to correct myself. Still, a blink or two would go a long way to making it look more like a living image than a still photo. Then again, all I have to go by is the very quick shot shown in the trailer you made a long time ago.

Anyway, there you have my recap, ray_afraid, thanks for showing interest in this project.

Thanks for all the info. I'd really just like to have the best looking/sounding version of the original cut as possible. I mean, take the video from the best looking one and the audio from the best sounding one. Nothing to complicated. It would also be nice to include all of the bonus material as possible. Documentary's from the directors cut, the original short film, ect. And I'd love to see the extended scene with Donald Pleasance and the children!

Also, Silverwook's screen cap.s on page 2 look good to me! I'd be fine with a dvd of that!

Good point, I guess I was thinking there was more articulation there than there really was. Maybe I was thinking of the original blink.

Good point? I dunno about that. The '04 version looked HORRIBLE and that static gaze didn't help anything. Why wouldn't he blink? He does in Jedi. He isn't some weird eyelid-less creature. Maybe it's impossible to do, but I think there should be a bit of blinking to add life and realism to an otherwise almost static picture.

Luckily for her and the rebellion Number 3 on the list is Tarkin who decides to park the Death Star in orbit of Yavin and wait for the rebel base to come into range.

See above post and the Death Star was orbiting Yavin to get to the moon not just parked there. Also, we have no idea how the DS even moves. It may have to rely on the gravitational pull of planets and moons or whatever. Why does everyone seem to think that giant thing was fast?

The rebel base exposure is more of a problem since it goes against the character. Leia wanted to protect the base more than Kane wanted to talk about his childhood.

But we have no idea how long our heroes were on Yavin IV before attacking the DS. It was obviously not Lukes first time in that X-Wing. He knew the controls, targeting computer, was familiar with the weapons systems, the life support on his flight suit (presumably), knew about the flight squadrons and attack patterns ect. and knew the ship well enough to tell R2 what to fix. Also, the falcon traveled quite a ways through hyperspace. Who knows how long it took the giant, lumbering Death Star to arrive at Yavin. If a weakness wasn't found, the Rebels would possibly have had time to pack up and head out.
