opinions on film restoration/preservation and how it applies to Star Wars - what do you think should/should not be allowed?

I don't really care what the intentions of the filmmakers are--the film is what it is. And that's what I want to see--not the film they wanted to make, but the film they did make.

THIS. I want to see the film I watched when I was a small boy, warts and all, in HD.

If you asked people about the Rocky series in 1992 they'd probably roll their eyes, because Rocky IV and V were fresh in people's minds. Cut to 2000 and the sequels are just the sequels, but the original film is remembered as a classic of American cinema.

I don't think people roll their eyes at the prequels as much as they accept them. At least that's my observation from talking to people about it. Clone Wars is very popular, and unlike the kiddie Ewoks cartoons in the 80's, it's strengthening peoples view of the prequels and this current era of Star Wars. I really don't know much about what people on the net are saying as this is the only Star Wars site I visit and I realize that we are a very small sect of unusual fans, but the majority of people that I talk to about it all seem to feel that nothing has changed and Star Wars has always been hokey kiddie stuff and the new stuff is just as good or bad as the original or even better. I hope I'm wrong!

On the plus side, it won't last, its just the way things are now. In 30 years from now, Lucas will be dead, there will be much less Star Wars stuff, and the original versions will be available in high-def. People will look back on the OT as classics and everything since then as not-classics. It's the same thing with Star Trek: TOS is considered more of a classic now than ever (it was derided as silly in the 70s and 80s and 90s), despite forgettable stuff like Voyager and Enterprise and spoofs like Galaxy Quest. No one remembers the crappy spin-offs, except as a footnote to the classic original. King Kong had a sequel; so did Wizard of Oz; French Connection did too; Breathless was remade with Richard Gere. Etc. At the time, it cheapens the original, but after a while people don't pay attention. Rocky is still a classic even though Rocky V exists.

This is very interesting. But here's something to be considered- none of the sequels to those films were popular- much less top grossing films. With the  exception of the Rocky flicks, they were mostly over looked and forgotten within a decade. This isn't the case with the Star Wars prequels which still have a very strong following. I'm really afraid Star Wars will be "kiddie movies" for the rest of time.

I realize I'm one of the most ignored people on the boards, but I'd like to hear someones opinion on this. Anyone agree? Disagree?

Honestly, I don't think the case needs any work, it is the disc art that needs a bit of help.  It still feels like it is for a fan project and not a studio released film.

Ya know, I don't think I've ever opened a DVD case and been surprised or pleased with the disc art. But then, I'm not usually impressed with the cover art either :P

Personally, I don't think the prequels are salvagable in any form, as prequels

or episodes 1-3.

Tell you what...you stop repeating yourself, I'll stop complaining about it.

Can't we all just accept the fact that some of us like the prequels and some of us don't.

Sure we can. But what Frink is annoyed with is that skyjedi is constantly making the same comments as if he's waging a war. A war to make sure everyone knows that he can say the same thing in every thread on the boards. (I got nothin' against you sky, just so we're clear.)

I hate the prequels, but I don't care if anyone else likes em and I think that's the majority opinion here.

edit- What Frink said.

The Big ESB Reveal
Time

Showed the trilogy to a first-timer a few years ago and to my delight, "No, I am your father." was a total surprise for him! He had, of course, heard the line quoted, but for whatever reason he had always thought that someone made that up and it wasn't really in the film. I realize this has little to do with the subject, but I thought it was nice.

Wait, so is Han just a moron now that he doesn't believe in something that can be physically measured? (I guess he doesn't believe in the Jedi in general, since they were killed off in public 19 whole years ago. Which seems sort of like saying he doesn't believe in the '92 Houston Oilers but whatever)

To me, this is a HUGE problem with the prequels. 19 years before ANH, Jedi were everywhere and well respected. Now, nobody seems to even believe they ever had any power and that they were just a bunch of loonies! It's even more unbelievable seeing as how they had scientific evidence that the force is real and that the Jedi had real power!

MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!!!!
Time
I love me some MK! Deadly Alliance is my favorite so far. Even the rpg on it was great! Very cool to be able to run around in the MK universe and a cool way to unlock characters and costumes for the kombat game. The story was really cool too! And of course most importantly, the kombat game was tons of fun. All my favorite old characters and some great new ones. I'm really looking forward to playing the new one soon!

Perhaps the problem with the ROTS sequence isn't that the CG isn't realistic enough...

On the other hand, I had no problem with rushing forward and plunging over the edge of the abyss with Gandalf and the Balrog and thought it was fantastic, which perhaps goes to show that even impossible shots have their place - in moderation. The ROTS battle just goes on and on and on.

Yep, that's it. And in any case I don't think CG lives up to the realism of models. Nor is a shot made on a computer as impressive as a shot with real models, cameras, lights, ect.

And as for the moment mentioned from LotR, it works because of the emotion invested in the characters and that the film has had time to build to this moment. Also the GC CG looks great. Starting a film off with weak CG in a total CG sequence mixed with a total lack of emotional investment in the characters or scene leaves me with nothing to feel but "Hey, this looks fun. Wish they'd hand the xbox controller to me!"

It's hard to deny that the battle between capital ships at the beginning of ROTS is superb,

Oh, people will deny it. Somehow they will.

I'll do that. To me, it just looks like a video game intro. And I can't even play it, so it annoys me to watch. I love the ideas there: finally seeing big capital ships bombing the fool out of each other high-seas style, but the CG takes me right out. If it was done with actual models that look realistic... blahblahblah you've all heard it before. The Ideas are great, the  execution is weak.

I do agree though that Jedi needs some big ship action as seen in Sith, I just don't want it to feel like the intro to a new SW video game.

The very last one I did was U2 - Pop.  The one before that was Yes - Talk.  I wore the Yes shirt to the Talk concert and several people asked where I got it, because it wasn't at the souvenir shirt booth.

Really? '90s U2? Haha. I hear Pop is very forgettable.

The three albums U2 put out in the 90's are three of my favorite albums of all time! And Pop was the last interesting thing U2 has done. Everything that has come after has been quite dull.
