Lynch doesn't include chapter stops on his DVDs because he believes they need to be viewed in one continuous sitting.  Apparently he's never tried to watch one of his own films while one of his kids was crying.

Actual, literal agreement.

Oddly though, I like David Lynch as a person. He seems like a pretty cool out there sort of guy.

Truth! Also, some of my friends lurk here and always think your posts are mine because they think your avatar (which I'm assuming is you) looks like me. It ain't easy being handsome, is it?

I was thinking the other day about the scene where Han & co come across the biker scouts and that they just seem to de doing nothing apart from one playing about with some kind of tech. What if, instead of this these troopers were near a small bonfire and it looked like a small battle had recently happened. There were bodies of Ewoks lying around and these troopers were throwing the carcases on the fire (a mirror to the jawas in ANH). Not only does this give the scouts something to do which would actually make the distracted, but also show how ruthless the Empire is to the indigenous population and why the Ewoks would be so ready to help them.

I'm not even slightly kidding.  I hate that movie with Gump-like passion.  I think it's a pile of carp, and I don't care about the explanations of what it all means (I've heard plenty of those).  It's still carp!

I'm with ya! All of his films are pretentious pieces of crap. Eraserhead has some interesting qualities, but in the end it's less a film and more an endurance contest.

*EDIT: And not a fun endurance contest like John Waters 'Pink Flamingos'. It's a boring one that gives you a headache.

Ignoring the PT (which was barely a glimmer in Lucas's eye when he made ROTJ) I don't know how one could think it referred to Vader.

I came to the conclusion when I was very young. A little after the film was released, so way before any PT. I'm not saying that I'm sure that's what it refers to, I just came up with that as a kid and it stuck with me I guess.

"Attack of the Jedi"! Too funny! I have no idea what I'd name the film, but Return of the Jedi has never set well with me. It sounds classic now, I guess, so I'm not rushing to make an edit that changes the title or anything.

Also, to bring this back toward topic, your analysis of the crawls (a term I loathe) is very interesting. In 1999 when I watched TPM opening night, I got a bad feeling about what was to come just from reading the crawl (can't come up with a better term for it). It just seemed... different than the others. Couldn't put my finger on why, but it didn't draw me in the way the OT ones did.

As far as the OT crawls go, the only thing I really don't like is in ESB "...led by Luke Skywalker..." Like you said, I never got the feeling Luke was leading anything. He seems like just another rebel to me and I like it that way. I guess he was a leader of Rouge Squadron or whatever during the Hoth battle, but the opening makes it sound like he's now leading the rebellion or at least their operations on Hoth, which doesn't appear to be true.

"Return of the Jedi" certainly refers to Luke's growth as a Jedi.

I've always thought it was referring to Vader's redemption. Leaving the Sith and returning to the Jedi. Or that it refers to Luke becoming a Jedi and therefore retuning the Jedi to the galaxy. Either way, I've always thought it was a lame title. Sounds too much like a generic sequel. Which... hmm...

The idea is that Endor is the sanctuary moon of Coruscant. The Empire is now building another DS in the heart of the Empire to solidify its stranglehold on the galaxy.

It's not secretly building it at all. It's right in public.

Fear. Fear will keep the people in line.

The rebellion needs to destroy this station before its completed otherwise their covert support will flatline.

It's a huge gamble by the alliance. To go right into the heart of the empire to destroy the new station. But they don't have a choice. To sit back and wait until its finished would be an enormous setback the rebellion might never recover from.

So it's almost a dare by the Emperor. I dare you rebellion to come into my lair and try and destroy it.

But to not do so would mean certain defeat for the rebellion in time.

So it's almost a desperate gamble by the rebellion.

They're still beat up and licking their wounds from being hammered during ESB.

But they have no choice.

So the rebels "secretly" go to Endor, moon of Coruscant, to start their plan.

The film opens with Vader traveling to Coruscant to converse with the Emperor.

I would move all the Emperor's throne room scenes to Coruscant. So I would never have him leave that room. So the only view of Coruscant would be a few shots of Vader's shuttle flying overhead and landing to adding distant city lights out the Emperor's window.

Not a cityscape mind you because his tower would reach into the upper atmosphere. it would tower over all.

That would also keep the digital work to a minimum as it would be merely distant city lights.

I love this. It's now a "has to happen" as far as I'm concerned.

It seem like it is slightly tweaked (for the better actually) but nothing as drastic as the pictures on the official site.

Wow, that does look good. Nice skin tone and some detail has been restored (engine on the right). Also the colors of the equipment looks good. Not as flat-grey as the '04. Has anyone seen other pics that show actual improvement over the dvds? This is the only instance I've seen where it doesn't look worse.

Also, Anchorhead - another book you may like (it's one of my faves): The Illustrated Star Wars Universe.  It's from 1995.  It's set up almost like National Geographic, with profiles of the OT planets each told by different characters - an anthropologist who visits Tatooine, an Imperial scout who hates his assignment to Endor, a slimy political yes-man from Coruscant, a poet from Alderaan.  Throughout, there are pieces of art done for the films (concept design work by many artists), complimented by quite a few specially-done paintings of various planet/culture-related scenes by Ralph McQuarrie.  The stories are written by Kevin J Anderson, whose novels were not my favorites, but this book works for me.

That reminds me - it's always interesting when the film concept artists do work for the EU.  I like the consistency of styles.

LOVED this when it came out. Lost it many many years ago. I'm gonna track down another!

Prequelsrule, I think you raised a good point about suspense. It's predictable that Han will return to save the day, but you forget about it at the time because the trench run holds your attention.

Thats like any film, too. If you stopped and thought about it, obviously Indiana Jones will survive any calamity thrown his way no matter how absurd, you know he won't die, but the film tricks you by engaging you so you can't stop and realize that. It creates the suspension of disbelief, not only of the film's world, but that the character is mortal and could die.

Any prequel film is the same. You know Obi Wan will die on the Death Star helping Luke escape so they can take stolen plans to the rebel base. But you aren't thinking that when you watch the prequels. Well, maybe you are, but if so its because the film is boring and that's the problem, not that you know where the characters end up.

Is it boring to watch Robert DeNiro in Godfather II? You know he's just going to end up chasing a kid around a garden with an orange in his mouth and plop to the ground dead as a doornail from a heart attack. Yikes, no dignity there. But no--those DeNiro prequel scenes are the best in the entire 9-hour Godfather saga.

Agree.

Same here. Great points.

I think it makes Star Wars stronger.

Nationalisation on such a microscopic scale in a Galactic Empire isn't in itself a sign of the evil of the regime but rather an indicator of it's reach.

You can be running a tiny farm on a dust ball on the outskirts of nowhere and still be under the thumb of the autocracy.

It's why Tarkin is much more sinister than Palpatine (in either trilogy) he is so much more palpable.

This. And dontcha wish Tarkin could have appeared in all three films? He's my favorite Star Wars baddie by a mile.
