Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Harmy I gotta tell ya, the last comparison pic you posted of the sunset scene, it honestly made me a bit misty-eyed. I know how lame that sounds, (lamer to me than it does to you, trust me dear reader) but it really hit me on an unexpected emotional level. For me (and no doubt many others) that scene has always been the most identifiable scene in the trilogy. It's what made the film seem so real. Your colors really restore it to what I remember seeing originally and brings back the beauty that has been lost for so long. Outstanding work. Thank you.

It really bugs me when a film shows a band playing, but the sounds your hear are from different instruments. I know these aren't real instruments, but when it shows the two SE characters blowing horn-like instruments (0.23) with no sound to match it just makes it look silly. ...Then again, the bad cgi, rubber masks and horrible disco tune are already so silly that I guess you'd might as well go the whole 9 yards. Can't we just cut this out altogether?

(EDIT: this is concerning Jaitea's vid. Didn't download Ronsters)

Isn't part of the point of ROTJ that you're supposed to worry about Luke? If you don't, there's no tension in the Emperor's offer.

The problem there, as the film stands, is that past the first few seconds of seeing Luke, there's never any sign that he might turn. He shows up all mysterious and dark, but we quickly see that he's still on the right path and then he goes to Yoda and it's confirmed that he's a goodie. There is no tension in the Emperors offer. The tension comes from wondering if Luke is right and Vader can be saved or if Luke will die doing what he believes is right.

And besides, I wouldn't say that's the point of RotJ, I'd say the point is in returning Vader to the good side and setting things right. Thus Return of the Jedi.

R.I.P?!

Wow, people here do have a problem with Star Wars being part pop culture... Besides, Star Wars being used for ads is nothing new.

+1. What's so bad about it? Remember the Ep.II ad that showed Yoda flipping and jumping around like a cartoon frog and ended with the slogan "Yoda man!" but pronounced like "yo' 'da man!"? Now that was horrible.

I found a link that has the exact quote in text.  I got the gist of it right.

Here's a different take on the edited version that includes the rodent line, but instead calls Peck "Wally Wick."  A video this time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDOi034BEJY

Can't find the weasel line in action, but all good fun.

I remember that. When I was 4 (now 30) I stopped responding to my real name and would only answer to Ray because I love Ghostbusters and Dan Aykroyd. The edited TV version used to make my blood boil with it's lame cuts and dialog changes!

We asked for a release of the OUT, and got one. It was non-anamorphic

How many people thanked him for doing that?

Hilarious.

also, keep in mind that in 2006, your average person had not converted to HDTV or widescreen, and didn't suffer the same issues with that format that videophiles did)

HDTV or widescreen tv's have nothing to do with the quality of that release. I'm no 'videophile", but when I put on a DVD that looks worse than my old VHS, well, we have a problem.

“On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie,” Lucas says, referring to fans who, like the dreaded studios, have done their own forcible re-edits. “I’m saying: 'Fine'. ”

Say what ya will about the guy, but that bold part is pretty cool of him. He really could be a dick about it I suppose.

We both know that that is not true at all.

I've never met anybody who cares about the changes he has made or even future changes he might make. Doesn't mean everybody likes the changes, but if he'd release the original along with his new version, everybody would be happy.

Anyone know why they didn't create the crawl text in 3D (as the storyboard below shows) but switched to just 2D text?

Maybe it was just too complicated to do it "3D", or too cluttered for a long scroll? The 2D is more in keeping with the old matinee serials that inspired it.

But Star Wars in 3D is Georges original vision! Won't be surprised to see LFL use this picture to back up that "fact".

Yeah, you're right, Ray, but I just picture some silly fall, "Oof," har har.  I want it to fit the triumphant mood of the moment.

I'm expecting more of a panicked "Holy carp, this thing is going to blow.  Get me off of this thing."  R2 would yell something more frightened and less cavalier.

darth_ender said:

So I guess it would be ideal to dub 3PO as well.  That certainly changes the mood.

Yes... yes. Love it. Even with 3PO's current dialog it works much better than the origina... at least in my head. It's still a bit of silly, but that's ok by me. I think Lando's smile and "we're on our way!" following their crash would make it a funny moment as well as it would seem the characters on screen find it just as amusing as the audience.

So we're a month and a day into this project, and it has proven popular thus far.  I thought I'd include this picture to illustrate Ronster's idea.

This would be cool to see if it could be done convincingly.  My only concern is that it would mess up the timing already in the movie.  The rebels discover that it is a trap, they turn to avoid the shields, find themselves in front of the Imperial fleet and the fighters appear.  Adding this shot would be an interruption to the pacing.

Agreed. I've always wanted to see this in one of the films, but I believe this shot would work best during the DS assault in ANH when Vader grabs his wing-men and leaves for battle.

EDIT: the 'second wave' idea would probably work nicely as well!

The Rebellion shouldn't feel like an organized military so much as a ragtag militia.

But they are an organized military. I think what you guys are discussing would work better for a pre-ANH rebellion. At this point (RotJ), they've had some BIG victories (the ANH opening text refers to the fact that they have already had some big wins and are growing) and would have gained much more mainstream support.

That may make sense realistically but thematically it would be good to separate the Rebels from the Empire. Empire: Big military force of humans. Rebels: Rag tag group of aliens and humans.

And that is exactly what is represented on screen as the film stands. The rebels are out numbered, out gunned, and out classed. Just not as much as they were during the battle of Yavin, nor would they be as I've pointed out already. We see that they are a cobbled together group of aliens and humans alike (unlike the Empire). The only reason the Rebels are launching such a daring assault on the DSII is because they think it isn't working yet- not because they've become such a big military force that they are confident in their abilities and machinery. When they find out the DSII is operational, they collectively shit themselves and without Landos courage and faith in his buddies, they would have turned tail and ran.

I don't wanna be "that guy" here, but the stakes were ever bit as high in ANH as in RotJ and the Rebels in ANH only had two types of ships as opposed to Jedi's four. Why wouldn't they pull all stops during the battle of Yavin?

So you're saying that all the ships in RotJ look like they come from the same place? Again, to me it looks like they come from very different cultures.

Or are you saying that each pilot should have his own ship that they brought with them when they signed up?

but that's what I mean. It seems like the ships were made specifically for them, and not second-hand ships bought off a used lot.

Where's the problem? It's a real world situation. Rebel groups are often funded by sympathetic corporations. And when the small Rebel group has grown as large as the one in RotJ seems to have, their sources for resources would grow larger as well.

The main problem with the Rebels is that the movies make it seem that the Rebels made their own ships.

How and when? I never got that idea. I've always assumed they were manufactured by a company sympathetic to the Rebellion. And as far as a "conglomeration of ships", I'd say that's exactly what we have in RotJ already. The "clam-shell" things, the Calimari ships, the blockade runners and four different fighters all looking like they come from different cultures.

Oh BTW I have a suggestion about the line "I have a promise to keep for and Old Friend"

Should this now be moved to just before Luke gets to tattooine as he would then be refereincing Han probably cut the the word old though so it is Luke saying to R2 "I have a promise to keep to a friend"

This would also co-inside with "were meeting up with the others" just before this line removing the word not and then into tattooine atmosphere

Love it!

darth_ender said:

Ray, I see the logic in your statement, but my thought is this: the Rebellion has never been better off, but they are also a conglomeration of various factions and races and formerly independent resistance groups (hence: Rebel Alliance).  While they are able to supply many newer ships, they also realize that this battle is not simply a scrimmage.  They're throwing everything they've got against the Empire, old and new.  If they lose this battle, they really lose everything.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. But, like you've said, some people would be annoyed with the inclusion of PT stuff in the OT. I can take Addy adding the robot in the junk pile, because  to me it's just another robot- doesn't necessarily tie in to the PT really. But when PT spaceships show up in RotJ, my mind has to decide between "those are new fighters, like the A's and B's." or "The PT really happened and this is proof. Godamit I hate Star Wars." Now, the first option doesn't sound too bad, but it runs the risk of becoming like the opening of RotS, a big mess of all kinds of old and new ships everywhere and I dunno who's who. The Rebels have two new fighters on screen along with new capital ships. The Empire has a new fighter as well as the big Super Stardestroyer (not a new ship, but new to battle). I'd say RotJ has enough new space ships in the battle already.

Hey Ray, don't get too worried....

Here's my problem with using PT ships: Why would they be dusting em off and using em now and not during the first DS battle? Surely thy needed the extra help then more than now when they have 2 brand new fighters at their disposal (A's n' B's). Same goes for adding Imperial craft. They got new ships this time out as well, so I don't see any point in shoving new/old ships onto the screen. I'm all for creating new action with the existing RotJ spaceships though. I'd say adding a scene where the B's take out a Stardestroyer is a must!
