Here is the video that the Doug Chiang quote is from...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx7YSByPI8I

...the quote is hardly damning. He just imagined the X-Wings looking different in his personnal opinion. Also, he says that he was initially designing the ships for TPM to look like OT/McQuarrie ships but George told him not too.

I think the new Trilogy will be just fine in his hands.

His words certainly aren't as harsh as I remember them being.

I'll withhold any judgement until we start seeing some designs, but I actually do have faith in the guy...

Where is this the full quote (In context) that keeps getting trotted out about young Doug wanting to redesign the X-Wings? Because it sounds to me exactly the sort of thing a young excited artistic kid would rush home and do after seeing Star Wars. I know I used to design and redesign SF stuff in my sketchbook for fun.

It was in an interview on the Ep. 1 Behind the Magic cd-rom. I don't remember the full quote, but I do remember him saying that he thought the spaceship designs in Star Wars were weak/lame/whatever.

True, but for people expecting to hear exactly what they heard in 1977, from John Williams in 1999-2005 for vastly inferior films...

Right, gotcha.

Frankly, if you want to hear something like his OT work, go listen to Raiders.

^Yes! Star Wars and Raiders are my favorite scores and both have a very similar feel. A magical, mysterious feel.

I refuse to be optimistic.

After the PT and Prometheus I don't want to invest time anticipating something that has every chance of being a disappointment.

I hate to stir the negativity, but I'm not hearing anything that I didn't expect to be said... Just quotes that are sure to please all sides of the fan base.

What can be done with Jabbas mouth in Jedi? The puppet looks fantastic until that intricate language comes out of that unarticulated, flapping mouth.

Ady has done wonders with "cantinaization" on Greedo and now Yoda, but it seems to me that Jabbas mouth needs so much more movement than it has that it would start to blur horribly using that technique. Imagine trying to make that mouth make a convincing "O" sound when he says "Wookiee".

If the language he speaks wasn't so human sounding and instead he made sounds similar to a frog... I think that would be interesting. But I love the voice and would really hate to lose that. Not to mention the work that would go into that kind of a change..

Any ideas?

if my mind serves me right, Lucas didn't give him enough time to really work on the scores for the prequels.  And even then, the movies were so bad he couldn't find inspiration probably.

I believe another big problem is that George wouldn't stop re-editing things after the score was recorded and locked in, so much of the music didn't appear in the film the way Williams intended.

quick question

the song that features during the end credits of NOES2

is that the original song because the VHS version I grew up with (can't remember if it's on the DVD) featured some of the film score

I saw a BD projected during a marathon and had never heard the song before (it's like a 50's song I think)

It's called "Did You Ever See A Dream Walking" by Bing Crosby and as far as I know, it's always been there. I consider myself somewhat of a horror buff, and I've never heard of a version that didn't use the song. Do you still have that VHS copy you grew up with?

EDIT: Found your answer. Apparently the studio didn't wanna pay for the rights to use some of the musical selections from the theatrical version when bringing the film to home video. Due to the negative critical reaction at the box office, they were probably trying to play it cheap. All music was restored on the DVD version and now BluRay.

Thanks for pointing this out! I love learning new bits of genre trivia!

I don't disagree at all. That's the same difference between Star Wars and the franchise it birthed. I'm just sayin' that sometimes hardships can inspire better art than sitting comfortably. I'm not sayin' that I have any faith that Star Wars 7 will be any better than.. anything.

It's not difficult to understand why people believe Abrams is getting itchy feet.  This is the guy who initially turned down the job, has refused to commit to the scheduled 2015 release, and has bitched about working in the UK (saying it was making him 'crazy').

These things don't exactly fill me full of confidence in him.

Could be a good thing. Lucas had nothing but trouble and discomfort while working on the original film and look how that turned out. He had no complaints on the set of the prequels and look how those turned out.

Looking back at the Radio version Death Star was the secret code name for the station which Leia accidentally lets slip in conversation proving that she had access to secret Imperial memos.

darth_ender said:

In the radio drama, Death Star is merely a project code name, not necessarily the official name.  I kind of like thinking of it that way: it's a code name that the Alliance adopted for propaganda purposes.  It seems to fit your interpretation perfectly.

Well that's cool. I've listened to the radio drama a couple times, but it's been over 10 years. That little fact must have been kicking around in the back of my mind.

There's really not much point in me bringing any of this up as we never hear civilians talking about the space station and anytime it is mentioned on screen they could just be using the code name (like I said, it was Billy Dee's delivery of "...that DEATH Star..." that got me thinking about this in the first place.) So nowhere to fit any of this into the films. Still, it fits into my own personal cannon quite nicely.

Posted this awhile back in the Revisited ideas thread (thought I was posting in this one). It's still an unfinished thought, but one that I think might be going somewhere...

ray_afraid said:

This is just a thought... and an unfinished one at that...

But does anybody else think the Empire should refer to the Death Star with a different name? Seems to me that "Death Star" should be a slang term the Rebellion uses to show what a terrible weapon this thing really is. Also, it seems a bit silly for the bad guys to call their battle station something so obviously evil. Wouldn't they be promoting this thing as something that is here for the good of the people while secretly using it to enforce their own agenda? And, if so, wouldn't naming it "The Death Star" kinda blow the lid on that?

Not that the citizens of the universe could really do anything about it at this point, but... I dunno. Guess it just seems a bit on the nose. Might as well name it "The Evil Empire's Big Scary Kill Machine".

I think the Empire get off on butch names for their hardware.

Stardestroyer - Avenger, Executor, Devastator and Tyrant plus Stormtroopers is pretty evil.

I dunno.. To me, all of those things sound Nazi-esuqe. Which isn't to say they don't sound Intimidating, but if you were living a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, calling a large battle ship a "Stardestroyer" doesn't seem to be a term you'd find anymore alarming than calling a plane with mass destruction capabilities a "Bomber" here on Earth during WW2.

But a "Death Star"....

Ryan McAvoy said:

Death Star sounds evil but I imagine that was the point when they designed a weapon of mass genocide on an almost unimaginable scale.

haha that's true...

Like I said, it's just a half-thought, but there's something there... I just haven't figured it out yet lol

What got me thinking about it is Lando's line "We'll last longer than we will against that "Death Star"!...." the way Billy Dee-livers that line makes "Death Star" sound like it's a nickname they've given it. So I'm thinking...

What if the Empire refers to it as the "Iron Star"- a giant space station from which they can watch and govern the galaxy. It's a giant, galaxy cruising big brother, able to survey lawbreakers, catch them and even imprison them right inside. What they aren't saying is that it also has the ability to destroy an entire planet with little more than the flick of a switch. The Rebels then give it the name Death Star in their own anti-Empire propaganda.

And I'm still not sure where I'm going here....

Yeah, with all due respect to Mr. Sylvester, I kind of wish he'd redesign the forums, but of course if he did that, it would probably mean jettisoning everything that's here now.

Wouldn't mean losing any information at all. The Rue-Morgue boards switch servers and had a total re-design a year or so ago and lost nothing (and there's way more information on there than here). It was a fairly massive undertaking though and probably not worth it here.

Why would they be listed in the end credits?
I guess so we could credit the model maker? "Dagobah Tree Spider Guy"

Oh, ok.
