HotRod's Playgroud - The thread where he can be a hypocrite, a bigot, and a jerk without screwing around with other people's threads
Time

(didn't see your follow up post right away)

Yeah, I'll admit that I often post and then I forget all about it so I don't come back to continue conversation. I'm sorry about that. Sometimes I'll post in the morning, remember that evening that I said something, somewhere, but don't remember where. I figure nobody noticed and my comments were probably ignored anyway, so I let it go. Because of that, I've been trying to keep myself from pressing Reply in Off-Topic.

Oh, it's only bad if it's a new thread?  That's kind of silly too, don't you think?

Yeah, I guess so. It just seems less offensive and bitchy to deal with (or just ignore) the comments you don't like in the thread they were posted in rather than make a new thread and a big deal about it. I dunno. Guess there's little difference really.

Thanks ray.  I'm not a big fan of yours either.  What exactly qualifies as being a justifiable jerk and what doesn't.  You've made rude comments to me on numerous occasions.

I have made comments, but I've never started an entire thread to call someone out. You've done that a lot.

I'm not a huge fan of Godzilla films, but I thought the premise is always that the monster attacks real cities (originally Tokyo, Osaka, etc.)

If you're going to depict a fictional city with buildings that defy the laws of physics, you may as well have it attack Gotham City or Springfield.

If we can accept the existence in a movie of a giant tyrannosaurus rex-like monster that is bullet and missile proof, awakened and powered by a nuclear bomb test and has "nuclear breath", does it really matter if the physics involving building destructing are realistic?

Well, I think what Moth3r is driving at is that if the world the giant fictional monster is in reacts realistically to the giant fictional monster, it makes the giant fictional monster easier to believe in.

I personally prefer a bit of stylized artistic license, for lack of a better term, when dealing with fantastical subjects. (like explosions and sound in space)

Info Wanted: is there a Star Wars Trailer / TV Spots Compilation?
Time

I remember back when I first joined this forum, someone was putting together a compilation of all the trailers, TV spots, toy ads, ect. and was putting them with the sci-fi channel airings of the OT  with intros and bumps from Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fischer. Actually, i think I downloaded it... but I dunno where it is now. I'll have to go through some old hard drives.

Ring any bells to anyone?

Godzilla films have always favored the fantastical to the realistic. Do the sounds and fire in outer space bother you in Star Wars? It's a fantasy film, not a documentary.

That trailer has more emotion, wonder and awesomeness than 'Zilla had during it's entire run time. I already know enough and have seen enough to know we won't be dealing with another one of those. Toho is releasing the film in Japan, so that's a sure sign that it's not another 'Zilla. Frank Daranbonts involvement alone has my butt in the seat. There's no guarantee it won't suck, but it has a lot going for it.

@ImpFighter- What's been done to this shot to improve it? I don't remember a discussion or vid clip of that. (I'm not doubting you at all, I just don't remember)

here is a pretty old clip that shows some of the tweaking done to that shot:

Thanks! That is some amazing work, as always. The color correction alone is astounding. The asteroid belt is perfect. And the 'headlight' effect as the falcon flies through the tunnel is the coolest thing ever.

I also have a retrofit idea for this scene

When the executor pulls out of the asteroid field we should see that sun that happens to be visible from directly looking out the hole. And perhaps quite imposing

An interesting idea Ronster, but the suddenly bright white opening seen in this shot has already been nicely improved now to remove it's inconsistency.

@ Ronster- I really like that idea! We never see a sun in space and it could end up a very iconic shot.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

The prequels haven't reduced what I want out of a Star Wars movie. Just because the prequels sucked so badly doesn't mean that now I'll take anything that doesn't suck like the prequels and that's entertaining and has good acting. Perhaps that wasn't what you meant, Darth Lucas, but I do get the impression that a lot of people feel that way. Also, "fast paced" isn't synonymous with "good." If Abrams' movies are better than the prequels, that fact alone will be enough for many members of this forum, but not for me.

 THIS.

Remember, people, that George is still in the background for Episode VII, and has anyone forgotten about the hype for Episode I 15 years back? With Abrams being a Spielberg clone at best, we might have another perfect storm in our hands. Hopefully Abrams has more respect for SW than he had for ST.

If he has as much respect for Star Wars as he did for Star Trek, you will likely be left to mutter to yourself in a corner.

Nah, I'll be there muttering with him. And that's exactly what I expect from JJ's SW: a very safe, appeals-to-all, Hollywood piece of crap that feels good in the moment but then feels empty for reasons you can't quite put your finger on... then the realization will hit that it's no more than a Best Of collection of moments from the OT with all the soul sucked out.

OR- maybe it'll be a very interesting tale of aging heroes dealing with deeper, more mature themes.

Nah, it'll be their kids running around cracking 'wise' and swingin' laserswords.

EDIT- What a grumpy post! No more replying before coffee!

I am astounded you can accuse me of ridiculing someone else's opinion (which I WASN'T doing btw) when you turn around and call my idea stupid just because it is, without even bothering to actually address what it is i'm saying.

We've been addressing what you're saying for almost two pages now. You're idea is stupid. Drop it. You can do it yourself once Ady is done.

I think his idea is a bad one. But do you really need to call people stupid? Let get go of your hate.

I didn't call anyone stupid, silly.  But the idea? Yes. I'm not stupid, but I've had plenty of stupid ideas. There's a large difference there.

I'll just add that Boba Fett is an incredibly silly sounding name, and he's better off without it. And PLEASE cut him out of ROTJ:R!

EDIT- If you're a prequel person (ugh) then he was named three films ago. Also he was called by name in the Holiday Special animated feature.
