What Went Wrong/What Can Be Avoided Thread

Actually, Neverar, that would have been awesome...though not so awesome for someone like me who saw the prequels first, but still awesome.

I actually think it would have been even better for someone in your situation. It wouldn't have seemed like a big deal at all when Obi and Anikin are talking about him, but it would have built this character up in your mind making his appearance in ESB a bigger reveal.

The Thrawn trilogy is amazing—easily the best by far of any Star Wars books that have ever been written.  I too had difficulty with them when I was young, but when I tried again at a more mature age, I wondered why I'd ever passed them over before.

Maybe I'll give it another shot. I've been trying to dig out my old copy, but I must have lost it when I got rid of my Star Wars stuff. I thought I had it packed in with my other books, but it looks like it went out with the SW collection. I can probably track down a used copy somewhere..

Now, imagine that your great-great-great-grandchildren were about to celebrate Hitlerday.  April 20th arrived. They had long forgotten about Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen.  They had never heard of gas chambers or death marches.  They had purchased champagne and caviar, and were about to begin the party, when someone reminded them of the day’s real history and their ancestors’ agony.  Imagine that they initially objected, “We aren’t celebrating the Holocaust; we’re just having a little Hitlerday party.”  If you could travel forward in time and meet them; if you could say a few words to them, what would you advise them to do on Hitlerday?

I'd tell 'em to have the best time they can possibly have! They aren't celebrating Hitler anymore than a non-believer is celebrating Jesus on Christmas. Despite where the origins may lie, Christmas is now celebrated for all kind of differing reasons and, as far as I can tell, they are all good reasons to celebrate (love, togetherness, peace, hope, the birth of a savior). Going around saying "Christmas is based on pagan rituals and if you are participating then THAT is what you are celebrating!" Would be very silly. Just as it would on this 'Hitlerday' the article made up. Who cares where the traditions come from if it was so long ago that no one remembers? What's important are YOUR reasons for celebration.

Another year and another new batch of Scifi! Here's what we have to look forward to so far:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Welcome to Yesterday

Edge of Tomorrow

Jupiter Ascending

Transcendence

The Machine

Interstellar

Divergent

Robocop

Godzilla

So what are you looking forward to this year?

 Ever-shortening titles, apparently.

Makes a nice curve, doesn't it?

I'm actually excited for Dawn Of The Apes. Rise really surprised me and I've been looking forward to a sequel since. That's almost a non-existent occurrence in my life.

I'll also see Godzilla. I have some hopes for that one.

I've never come into a year anticipating 2 films, so it's really quite exciting for me!

^There's no accounting for taste. I realized when he first started posing movie ratings that his barometer was screwy and that he's probably quite young. Nothin' wrong with any of that.

I'm sure twenty-six is quite young from a certain point of view.

Maybe it is, but I thought you were younger. No big deal.

Aliens (1986) - 6.5/10

I'm really not sure what you're trying to get across here...

That scene has bugged me since 1979. (Not to mention being totally freaky.) There has to be a easier way to dispatch Ripley than shove a magazine down her throat. And it sure isn't going to look like an accident, or the Alien. Was this supposed to emphasize Ash's major malfunction?

Yes.

Doesn't look like lightning to me. Just looks silly.

Still -- in-universe, in the book itself -- it's lightning, not laser bolts.

Right on. There's really nothing wrong with it. It's just that, as a kid, it didn't look like Star Wars to me. And I remember next to nothing about the story, except that, like the cover, it didn't feel Star Wars.
That was 20 years ago though.

Every ounce of it. I know almost nothing of the EU.

 This, seconded, +1, etc.

Have you ever been interested in looking into it? I read 'Heir To The Empire' back in 1991 or '92, but it didn't feel like Star Wars to me, so I never followed up. Even the cover was off-putting. I remember it was like a wizard with lasers shooting from his fingertips. (just looked it up and I'm not wrong!)

But I have been thinking about trying a few other EU novels to see if I can expand my Star Wars world. Currently it's the original film, Empire and a version of Jedi I have cooked up in my head (couldn't tell ya when the last time I watched Jedi was..)

Give Star Wars a break for 6 months or more...watch with a critical eye

Simple solution.

Watch it lo-fi(VHS,Beta,V2000, laserdisc)!

It forces you to focus on the characters and the storytelling and nothing-else.

Effects and sets are obscured by the relatively low quality picture that you have no choice but  to follow the story.

I noticed all of the 'defects' mentioned (and many more) as a kid watching the VHS. They're all still there. Star Wars was a (fairly) low budget film. Not everything worked perfectly. So what?

Also, It's been 2 years since I've watched any of em. How often do you guys watch the films? Just curious.

EDIT- Just remembered that I did watch Harmys De-Specialized 2.5 when it was released, so I did watch Star Wars this year.

The Krayt Dragon Call
Time

Does the shooting script say Obi-Wan is making a dragon noise or was this made up after the film was finished?

Watching the scene, I just don't see how the Tuskins are supposed to think Obi-Wan is a dragon. They turn and see him coming, waving his arms. They run because they know who he is. This gives the impression that the guy in the hood is respected and feared and not to be crossed. The 'Dragon Call' seems to be a SE explanation that, like Greedo shooting first, ruins a character introduction and story element.
