How do you feel about the inclusion of “Episode V” in ESB’s opening crawl in 1980?
Time

I love it.
I like the feeling that we’re in the middle of the story, as we always are with anything anyways. Everything has a backstory, so no use pretending that any given point in any story is “where it all started”.
I liked it more before any prequels were made. I’d still like it more that way, but I still love it.
It’s a cool little weird thing.

What did you think you were before?

Cisman with a feminine side.

But everybody has a feminine side.
Masculine & Feminine aren’t gender or sexuality tags, but the two sides of everyone.
I don’t say that to be combative, I just think it’s a healthy thing for us all to remember.
We’re all a masculine & feminine. The amount of which that covers most of yer personal pie-chart has nothin’ to do with your sexual preferences or identity.

Terrible DVD/Blu-ray Cover Art

I’m torn because is a gorgeous shot and super iconic, but yeah, it does spoil the twist.

It’s even more than that it ruins the awesome twist ending, though. It’s also got a horribly ugly gradient map applied & Cornelius looming in the sky is dumb & the whole affair is terribly photoshopy.
But ruining the end is the greatest sin any media can commit. And this cover is going to Hell.
Big time.

Maybe Yoda could say “my child” at one point

Why?

and Luke, as he’s watching the Pyre, could whisper “Asoka…”

What does that even mean??

edit:

StarkillerAG said:

I’m 90% sure Baby Yoda isn’t Yoda’s actual son.

Oh. Is that what Kurgan was talking about?
Yeah. That’s not Yoda’s baby. …I hope.
Is the baby’s name supposed to be “Aska”? Is that what that means?

I don’t think it’s any more “open ended” than the original ending.
What it does do is end the film on a more serious, reflective & emotional scene than the Ewok boogie.
I couldn’t care any less how it ties in to the ST, It’s just a better fitting end to the trilogy.

that only works if you are going to follow it up with ST content

I totally disagree. The pyre scene with force ghosts is perfect closure.

Adywan, in your full list of changes you’ve put:
“Have a small portion of the Ewok celebration which then leads to the funeral pyre scene. This is where the Force Ghosts will appear and the film will end with Luke being alone (which in turn foreshadows TFA).”

And I was just wondering where the stance is on that now…
The real reason I ask is because, if that sort of open-ended ending was still part of you’re plan, then…

Knives Out (2019)
Didn’t like it. The previews made it out to be a very different movie. It looked like a fun “who did it? It could be anybody!” type a thing. It is not.
The killer is revealed right away & I easily guessed the rest of the thin plot early on, then sat & watched as the movie & it’s goofy characters slowly proved me right with no payoff.
Do pass.

There’s one thing in that reconstruction that isn’t quite right: as I understand it, the original idea was to have the background plate be a top-down view of the snowy Hoth plains, so it would nearly be a featureless white.

Once the crawl finished, Luke on a tauntaun would ride into frame, and then the film would cut from a top-down view to a normal perspective.

That’s really cool. Each film having a different pan to the opening action would be interesting.
(though I still prefer the matching starfield/stardestroyer openings)

Adherence to ‘tradition’ makes the opening a little irksome to me. Jambe Davdar’s reconstruction of the storyboarded opening crawl is something I personally find a lot more interesting; a blue crawl over a snow-covered landscape, altogether different from the first film yet similar enough that an audience would be sure they came to the right film.

I dig that too, but I actually prefer all the films having the same opening.
It’s just something I love about the trilogy.
I’d really love to see fan edits with different openings though.

I don’t know if that’s the intended meaning, and I can’t believe I’ve never thought of it myself, but I vastly prefer that interpretation over what I always assumed: that the title refers to Luke becoming the new line of Jedi and thus the Jedi (plural) returning to the galaxy.

But yeah, your idea of Anakin being the Jedi who returns after spending decades lost is much better and more poetic. I love it!

Cool! I always like it when someone’s odd thoughts enhance the experience for others.
This really is how I’ve always seen it, so this isn’t coming from a PT tainted point of view.
It mostly comes from Luke’s conversation with Obi-Wan on Dagobah. Obi-Wan is sure that “the good man who was your father was destroyed”, but Luke is sure he can bring his father back. When Luke says “I can bring him back… to the good side.” he’d might as well say “I can make him return… to the Jedi.”
This may not be the intended meaning, but I contest that it’s stronger than any other meaning I’ve ever seen posited & has a stronger connection to the actual film.

I think what ShamanWhill is talking about actually is what’s happening in RotJ.
Vader can’t kill the Emperor. The Emperor’s hold is too strong on him. Vader needs Luke to do it, which is his real reason to bring Luke to the Emperor. Vader knows that the murder will make him the new Emperor & make Luke much easier to turn to the darkside, where they can “rule the galaxy as father & son.”
I do wish this was mentioned in their scene at the docks though…
Seeing his son tortured is what finally gives Vader the power to break the darkside hold & do the deed himself. And thus the Return of the Jedi & a silent title-drop.

Hmm… But then again, Vader defends the Emperor when Luke picks up his lightsaber.

It’s not perfect, but I chalk it up to the Darkside’s grip. If Vader “must obey (his) master.” this would include protecting him, willingly or not.

And even the Emperor asks Luke to kill him.

The Emperor wants Luke to kill Vader so that he can inherit a new, younger minion.
Both baddies are working against each other.

Is the Despecialized Edition more important than an official release?

Mocata said:

It gets more important every day there is no official release.

This.
But, a correct, official release would be much more important because it would be available to the public at large.
The average Joe doesn’t know what DeEd is & they get confused when it’s explained to them. If a correct OOT was packaged with every boxset, it would make the conversation MUCH easier.
Also, I still have to believe that LFL has access to better sources than anybody else & could put together better versions than the fan projects.

Still, the 4K-- projects are nailing the theatrical experience, DeEd V.3 is gonna be the perfect modern BluRay & Revisited is a sensible SE.
So, I’ve got no need for the current official products!

But I can’t think of anybody being removed from the credits.

I’ve heard that many people cant get into TOS because it’s “Too corny.”
Hot take incoming…
It’s TGN, for me, that is so corny I can’t take it. It’s full of cheesy corn & soap opera antics. Over the last few years I’ve really come to love TOS. I used to think I hated Trek en mass, but once I finally gave it a real shot, TOS won me over very quickly.
I’ve occasionally dipped into TNG, thinking I must have missed something when it was actually on air. I love Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner & LeVar Burton. But, TNG is just not for me.
I haven’t tried the other shows.
