Info & Idea: SERIOUS preservationists ONLY
Time

Sad to hear Puggo didn't get to see Star Tours.  But I agree with Captainsolo, you didn't miss much.  If you go watch martinsvids copy, your getting more then the real experience since your seeing the complete preshow.  If you went even in the last 15 years, Star Tours wasn't that big a draw so there wasn't any lines.  You'd be walking right through the preshow catching only a glimpse of it.  And by mid 90s it was pretty outdated, not to mention what it must have been like this year.

For a originaltrilogy convention, how bout renting out one of the biggest screens in NY or L.A. for one night and screening original 35 mm prints of the OOT.  The lobby could also have people's person collections on display etc.

As for the topic in general, I think the OP has still not explained why serious preservationists only need apply to his invite.  Also if you look at the topic all caps are used.  This is considered shouting or for when something is "serious business".  Finally, its well known that meeting strangers right off the net can be downright dangerous.  Theres just not enough in the original post as to why this person wants to meet and also his asking literally anyone to reply causes suspicion.  And again why so discriminatory for serious preservationists?  Is there any such thing as a non serious preservationist?  Like a joke preservationist (maybe George Lucas himself fits this)  I think the snarky remarks are a reaction to that.

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!
Time

daneditor said:

On the plus side, when the prequels make fuck all and the OT make a shit load the truth about his two trilogies might finally hit Lucas.

This was exactly what I was thinking.  I actually enjoy the prequels but I know the majority when they hear 3D Star Wars want ANH or ESB.

The fact that ep. 1 is getting the first release and that we'll have to wait years to see ANH or ESB, is finally showing me that Lucas has finally really lost it.  I've held onto apologizing for him and continuing to watch clone wars.  But this strategy is just insanity.  He is avoiding production on the live action tv series because its going to cost too much, but will fund a 3D reproduction of ep. 1 which most people hate?

Of course those funds could go to ANH being full restored from 1977 as well which makes this all even worse.

Hilarious fan-site, but could it be a fake? (I'm guessing you know which one already...)
Time

Hes been around for many years, going back to ep. 1 pre release I believe.

I'm surpised hes still around.  He would post up fake interviews with Lucas and explain on his site how he helped write the prequels.  Eventually Lucasfilm had enough of him and told him he had to put a disclaimer on this site that it was all fake.  So somewhere on his site there is a disclaimer that this is a website "for fun", or somthing like that.

I believe this guy is taking his fantasy life and putting on the internet for all to see.  I think alot of people fantasize what it would be like to write the prequels or how they would continue the franchise but this guy is literally posting all this on a website.  He probably does have a few mental issues, which is sad.

edit: I just clicked on his site on a whim and hes gotten worse, mentally.  His posts are starting to not make sense at all.  I hope he gets help.

Jon Stewart hour long interview with George Lucas at CV
Time

This was actually a pretty revealing interview with Lucas, if you read between the lines.

Lucas describing how Vader finds out Luke is his son from the emperor is pure Special Edition retconnning.  He references the new dialog by Ian McDiarmid where the emperor explains to Vader about Luke.  In the non SE version, the emperor simply states that their new enemy is Luke, and Vader very quickly responds "hes just a boy" meaning, hes known about Luke and who he is pre-empire.

I guess I was surprised that Lucas would reference the new scene as if it had been there since 1980.

Lucas' daughter writing for the Clone Wars shows who will be keeping the franchise going when hes gone.  Sadly, the daughter is writing an episode about Darth Maul having a brother, which even I as a prequels fan think is rubbish.

Lucas' statement about being "out of work" in the late 80s-90s is interesting.  Any interview with Lucas from 83-97 always had the "where are the prequels" question.  Surely he knew if he just made a few more star wars films or had another director do them the money would be coming in.  He did farm out the ewok adventures but he must have had an idea of what everyone really wanted.

Which leads me to the conclusion I've had for awhile.  Lucas dislikes the original trilogy, or tolerates it.  Lucas never got to make the films he wanted to make, he made very compromised versions of them, with Jedi being the least compromised, which is why the prequels all feel like follow ups to Jedi, seriousness with silly kid humor and creatures.  Finally with digital technology he made the prequels which is his real vision of what Star Wars for him is.  Thats why hes involved with the writing for Clone Wars also, he actually cares for it.  He never cared about the post ep. 6 stories because it never interested him creatively or with what he could do with it.

And all this lying about Vader always being Luke's father (guess Lucas didn't hear about the Leigh Bracket script leak), the retconning, the special editions.  Its all to make it shoehorn into the prequels which is what he always wanted Star Wars to be.  Big armies, lots of jedis, yoda with a saber etc.

Even his story that he began with ep. 4 because it was the most interesting is a lie of sorts, since he had to cut down his original treatment to fit budgetary concerns, not creative.  I guess from a business point of view he can't tell the truth about what he feels about the OT, but its definitely there.  And why we will never see beautifully restored non SE versions.  On the prequel dvds, theres always alot of deleted footage, yet none for the OT.  Most likely he considers them so bad, in his own head, that he would never want them out there.  But now he has too, because with BluRay there would be no reason to hold back that stuff now.

Long ranting post here sorry, but it was a good interview I think.

Misheard line in ESB
Time
Thanks for the replies. Its funny how memory especially from when we are kids tends to be faded and misremembered. I think it will be amazing though if another poster remembers this line from the theatrical release! Its too bad Ben Burtt doesn't lurk these boards (or does he??) so he can solve all these audio questions.

Misheard line in ESB
Time
After reading through the thread about the "uncut" Empire 70mm I thought of an instance where I remember something from the theatrical run yet have never seen it in any other version. Mind you I was pretty young at the time but I'm pretty sure it was there.

When Luke is upside down in the Wampa cave, and fails to reach for the lightsaber, I remember then hearing Obi Wan's voice instructing Luke to "use the Force". After hearing this, Luke then reaches out and tries to grab the saber using the force.

The version I saw was most likely a re-release in 1981 or 82, 35mm print. Now it could be possible that I'm simply remember something from the storybook or record or whatever. But heres an instance where I could swear I heard that Obi Wan dialog, and have been looking for it ever since in all the different mixes Lucasfilm has released since.

Anyone else hear of this bit of dialog in any of the released versions?

Help: looking for... Making Of Temple of Doom
Time

Not sure if we’re allowed to post seed requests but thought I’d give it a shot. Theres zero seeders right now and a few downloaders at myspleen for this. If someone can seed this for awhile or repost at another location (demonoid?) I’d be happy to seed for awhile once I get a full copy. This is the most obscure of the Indy docs and one I really want to see.

Thanks!

Natural Born Killers - extended cut (Released)
Time
This sounds like a great fan edit to do. I've always wished that alternate ending would be added to the film so I'm looking forward to this edit. To answer a previous question, the DC did not contain the alternate ending. It simply contained many new shots of violence and mayhem. I actually prefered the R rated cut because the DC is really too much, especially the additional scenes of Mickey raping the girl in the hotel room. However, the DC does feature some great additional shots in the diner and the famous "looking through the hand scene" at the end. Also, I remember reading the original QT script and it did not contain the depth that Stone brought to the finished film.

Howard The Duck - special edition (Released)
Time
As a hardcore fan of this film, my initial reaction after viewing this release: WOOOOOOOW

Ok, that reaction actually occured in the first few min but lasted the whole film. This is an absolutely monumental release. The only other home video version of any kind of this film is from the 1987 vhs/laserdisc. Anytime Howard aired on tv it was essentially taken from this lousy vhs print (you can always tell the vhs print by the small black bars seen during the credits). Watching this version of Howard brought up many questions in my mind. First off, its obvious that at some point Universal or Lucasfilm did a complete THX version of the film, which I would say this print is. Its gorgeous.

So who owns the rights to this film? Did it revert back to Lucasfilm? Someone made a decision to restore the film and then keep it in a vault for some laserdisc/dvd release that simply didn't occur. I guess we can all be lucky that Universal had this print and probably without thinking sold it in some hd movie package to the uk cable station it was shown on. And now we have a near perfect version of the film. My suggestion to anyone even slightly interested in getting a copy of this is to jump on the torrent asap. You should be able to get a nice fast download since there is plenty of seeders right now. I have a feeling that if Universal or Lucasfilm sees this print in wide release, they're going to freak.

My only nitpick on this near perfect release is that I wish the actual shooting script was in the dvd rom section and that we had all the trailers. Its not DarkJedi's fault there is only one trailer there (the tv trailer that aired during primetime a day or so before release) since thats literally the only version you can find anywhere on the net. There were about 3-5 different trailers for this film, including the famous Lea Thompson one where she faces the camera and talks about a hot guy for a min then ends with "and I love rubbing my hand through all his feathers" Then the title. Classic trailer, but lost unless someone can make a copy off of a 35mm print, if anyone even has that.

So major thanks to DarkJedi for this release. One of my favs, commercial or fan released, of this year to be sure
