Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years
Time

Amazing that supershadow is still around.  His site used to have a disclaimer that it was all "made up for fun" because Lucasfilm finally went after him.  But I don't see the disclaimer up there now.

I read today that Lucas was auditioning writers and plotlines during that July to August development period for ep. 7.  So he wasn't even going off his old treatments.  He had no clue what ep. 7 was going to be or should be.

For some reason that makes me feel abit better, the idea of him stashing the plots for 30 years and lying about their existence really sucked.

I picture this guy as being the character in those 70 and 80s American high school comedy films where he's the annoying dween in the class that gets bashed by all, but no one feels sorry for him, because well...he just really deserves it for being a parasite of society.

This Rinzler article is ridiculous.  Why didn't he post this information during the writing of Making of Star Wars or ESB?  Oh yeah because he was in on the lie to the fans that ep. 7-9 never existed.

Check out this blog just posted from Pablo Hildago

http://starwarsblog.starwars.com/index.php/2012/10/30/on-the-brink-of-the-future/

The Ep. 7 project was alive at least going back to June 2012.  Lucas was writing the treatment.  Now is this treatment based on old material or new?  We'll never be told I bet.  Most likey hes been lying for years and just never embellished on the treatments.

If Lucas just started the ep. 7 project, that means he did so in order to strengthen the value of Lucasfilm for the Disney sale.  He went back on his word (remember when Red Tails came out and he said it would never happen) and created the Ep. 7 project just to give Star Wars a bigger sale value.

Unreal.  I've always been a Lucas apologist, even though I've wanted the OOT release and prefer the originals, but this is too much.

For those holding out for the OOT Blu Rays, I guarantee some part of the deal was not altering the special editions in any way unless Lucas approves.  And Kathleen Kennedy probably gave him a verbal agreement the originals won't be released.

But who knows, he just sold his legacy to Hollywood which he hated for 30 plus years, anything is possible now.

Everyone needs to watch that clip since you hear it in George's own words. "I have treatments for 7, 8  and 9"

I'm stunned, still processing all this.  George has been absolutely lying for 10 plus years to us.  Sure we knew he was lying or was at least delusional but now its confirmed in his own words.  And he lied to the press, everyone.  Even in the films themselves they have the tacked on wrap up at the end of ROTJ SE.

I think George was done with SW long ago.  He finally got to make the films he wanted to make back in the 70s without budget constraints (the prequels with their large armies and big canvas) and is now giving it all up.  Literally selling the whole lot of characters to be done with.

This is a sad day in a way.  I was never that much of an EU fan, for me if Lucas didn't touch it, it wasn't canon.  Now its all extended universe from here on out.  Yeesh.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I think whats slowly happening is that we have a generation of kids who have grown up with the 97 and later versions and that's "their version" meaning the one they have attachment too.  They might have heard of the OOT or maybe downloaded a copy and decided that the SE had more stuff in it etc.

Sometimes on the forum I'll see posts from people who saw the special editions first but ended up liking the OOT better which is really refreshing.  Technically the originals have a more realistic feel to them (thanks to no cg) so they just work better.  However most of the casual fans would never think about this and those raised on the SE will want their Rontos.

I think someone really needs to do a definitive interview with George on this whole subject.  Why when it comes to these particular films he doesn't believe in a preservation of any kind of the original releases?  Especially of the amazing original effects work? Maybe theres something personal there we don't know about.

That original trilogy change you wouldn't mind
Time

I think I would have preferred them adding scenes then tweaking the effects though I agree with the matte boxes needing to be removed.

I would have added a scene early in A New Hope where Palpatine orders Vader to go to Tarken and watch over him.  That would explain his presence on the space station.  It also would have put Palpatine in ep. 4 which is the only one hes not in.

<strong>Star Wars: Detours</strong> (animated series) - a general discussion thread <strong>(Unreleased)</strong>
Time

Looks like George Lucas was at the Detours panel at Celebration 6!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM5VECv5Y6A

This is an amazing appearance by George in that he comes off like a bit of a jerk

1.  He makes jokes about Seth Greene's and the other writer's height.

2. He makes jokes that he basically can't stand them and can only stay around them for a short time.

3. He makes a racist comment.  All the writers are taking photos of their experience onstage.  George jokes about this and says "The writers are all tourists" and  "Our writers meetings take place in Japan!"  So essentially hes saying that japanese people are known for taking pictures everywhere.  Nice stereotype.

4. The actor who voices Obi Wan Kenobi for the clone wars shows up onstage and introduces himself to George.  Apparently hes never met him!

This somewhat hostile attitude from George definitely makes me believe the story of the fans who asked him about releasing the untouched OT and him telling them to grow up.  The guy we see on stage in this clip would definitely do that.

Another thing I've observed about Detours is that it takes place between Ep. 3 and ep. 4.  But the main characters are pretty much all OT characters.  Why didn't George make a show making fun of the prequel characters? Oh yeah because he hates the OT and doesn't care.

That article leads me to wonder what bridges exactly did Prowse burn?  He claims to have been unaware of the "I am your father" secret until the film's premiere, yet Lucas supposedly cut off most contact after he leaked that secret.  I know first instinct here is to accuse Lucas of being paranoid, selfish, egotistical, or whatnot, but does anyone really know why Prowse was cut off?  This question probably merits its own thread, but I don't feel like starting one.

Theres actually an untold story about Prowse that I haven't seen on the net before and was related to me from a friend who helped on the Men Behind the Masks tour, a convention tour of Prowse, Bullock, Kenny Baker, Mahew etc that happened during the mid 90s.  This came from a conversation with the other cast members.

Prowse as you known was fond of talking to the press but there was a female member of the press (he may not have known she was press) he had taken a fancy too.  So he decided to take her on the tour of the set, the carbon freezing chamber set!

Now before Empire came out, the real big secret of the film wasn't so much the Luke/Father aspect, but that Han Solo doesn't make it to the end of the film.  Somebody caught Prowse bringing this women to the set and the rest is history.

Best SW score
Time

Pretty much all of ANH is gold to me.  The end titles that go from the main theme to Leia's theme is incredible.  They repeated it with ROTS even though Alderaan was in the film for about a minute!

The imperial march from ESB is probably in the top three themes of the saga (with the Main theme and force theme above it).  Its as iconic as the indiana jones theme and is now in the pop culture.

Jedi has some nice themes.  For some reason I really like Jabba's theme, which is this heavy bassoon thing that is buried in the mix but you can hear it on the cds.  Williams lifted it from E.T. (when they are going trick or treating) but it works well for the tatooine overlord.

The prequel themes are a really mixed bag.  Qui Gon got the best theme I think (all 1 minute of it heard during his first confrontation with Maul) with the romantic theme from Clones and the Anakin/Obi Wan duel also being highlights.

&quot; The People Vs. George Lucas&quot; documentary...
Time

Finally got to see this today.  By the way its a featured movie on the Android market so its going to get alot of exposure.

Honestly I hated most of this doc.  To let you know, I love the original untouched OT and enjoy the prequels.  I also think the preservation efforts of the fans are amazing.

And thats why I hated this doc.  The focus really should have been how we loved the untouched OT and wanted it preserved as well as how the prequels disrupted what came before in the OT.

What we got was about an hour of comedian hipsters ranting about their childhoods and how they had all the action figures.  There was a good 30 minutes devoted to fan films which really didn't have anything to do with Lucas at all but how fans just love Star Wars.

Heres a breakdown of my thoughts

1.  Dale Pollock and Gary Kurtz!  They actually got these people to speak against Lucas (just by appearing in this doc) and they're shown for about a minute each.  WTF  Talk about missed opporunity for interesting stories and insight on Lucas outside the propganda machine of Lucasfilm.

2. David Prowse!  Another missed opportunity of what went down on the ROTJ set in terms of Lucas and secrecy.  He has about 50 seconds tops in this film.

3. Theres tons of commentary by this comedian named Nar.  Hes this ex host of Attack of the Show on G4.  Ex meaning he wasn't considered good enough to stay.  We hear tons from him.  The only good segment he was in was the midiclorian discussion.

4.  The hipster commentators, especially that rock group member who had never seen ROTS, but never really had any SW toys either.  So why is he here?  And why are any of these comedians here.  They aren't adding to the discussion at all.  They were horrible.  The worst was some panel (of people never identified) where one guy couldn't speak a sentence without the F word every five seconds.  I don't mind the F word, I use it quite a bit myself, but this guy had nothing intelligent to say.

5.  The biggest crime was the lack of commentary on the preservation movement.  What the whole point of the film should have been.  I wanted to see 10-15 min of Adywan discussing what Lucas wasn't doing with his film on the dvd releases, I wanted to see guys like Puggo (where is his footage!) talking about preserving even the 16mm prints since they are important.

6.  Things I liked: the bit on Jar Jar, the midiclorian discussion, anything with Chris Gore who seemed to be able to put together some words intelligently, the bit on Han shoots first, the mention that ANH is in the library of congress but theres no movement to get a pristine original print of that film.

7.  All the fan films clips.  Talk about not necessary.  You can make an extremely intelligent doc with just talking heads and stills.  I get it, people love making their own SW films.  But it wasn't clever or interesting to show all the footage, it just got tiresome.  Did we really need to see endless stop motion animation done by 19 year olds in a film called "The people vs Lucas"?

Some would argue the film was for casual fans.  This doesn't excuse the overall quality of this doc which was poor.  There just wasn't any center, it was a hodgepodge of random fan interviews and clips from fan films.  It really felt like an extended Attack of the Show segment gone wrong.  If you want to see some good documentaries watch some of Oliver Stone's recent work like his Castro doc and South of the Border about Hugo Chavez.  Thats literally talking heads with some historical footage, and its all riveting stuff.  For a film criticizing Lucas' work, I think they need some improvement themselves (I know that sounds like a TFN comment but theres got to be some truth there)

Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions
Time

I didn't buy the blu ray set but the bonus disks are now out there (thank you internets)

The behind the scenes segments are nice but they are all centered on the design aspects of the film including the effects.  Is funny when they talk about the old models and cut to special edition footage where its all been removed.  The interviews with the effects artists are amazing and fun to watch.

I wish there were proper documentaries for each film, talking about what it was like to film in England, interviews with Lucas on the experience etc.  The only cast interviews are just one 3 minute segment each.  Its as if the they are saying the actors weren't a big part in making the films what they were.  Carrie Fisher's interview consisted of a minute of her saying how she was cast and then saying how "everyone deserves their own theme music" Really weak.

There are nice stills of many of the props and creatures which is very nice.  I really think they did try to make these extras discs worthy for the fans and I almost felt sorry for those who put them together because they're stuck on a set with the altered films.

The deleted scenes are great.  Now that they are on youtube you can all enjoy them but if they weren't (and internet leaks didn't exist) I think they would have been worth the cost of the set.

Those are just my OT bonus disk impressions, haven't watched the prequels yet.  As for the films themselves I'm sticking to the OUT.

Thanks for posting this, can you upload some others preferably from the OT.

I agree with another poster who said the Obi Wan getting lectured about the saber as well as him coming out of the swamp (the apocalypse now shot) would have been great to see.  Much preferred over those random animatic shots anyway.

I think the Maul eyes on Grievous in the animatic is just an ILMer guessing about the character.  They only work on sequences and are not privy to the script or even story they're working on.

It looks like alot of people have the set in hand now.  But none of the deleted scenes have been uploaded to youtube, besides the officially released ones.

Can someone with the set please upload at least the wampa attack and Lukes's training from ESB?  Maybe to rapidshare or even youtube?  It would be much appreciated!

I like that - a lot.  Much more emotional and adult than what was chosen.  Well done.

I can see why it was deleted, Han's line delivery is terrible.  I'm wondering if for the deleted scenes they are purposefully using bad takes so people won't wonder why they never made it in.  I wouldn't put it past Lucas considering its taken so many years for this stuff to even come out.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I turned on my tv today and saw this:

DR. PHIL WITH GUESTS GEORGE LUCAS AND OT FANS

(middle of broadcast)
Dr. Phil:  Now George you wanted to say something.

Lucas:  These are my films, I wrote them, I directed them, its one story and I believe that if I need to make changes I should do so.

OT Fan: But the changes are terrible.

Lucas: They're not…

Dr. Phil: Now let him speak let him speak!

OT Fan: We love these films when they first came out, they were amazing, we just want to be able to see the original films in the best 1080p BluRay quality possible

(audience applause)

Lucas: Nobody would buy them

Dr. Phil: Wait what was that?

Lucas:  We released them on dvd in 2006 and nobody bought them

OT Fan: We all bought them!

Dr, Phil: Now hold on now hold on now, your saying nobody has bought a Star Wars DVD since 2006?

(Lucas silent)

Dr. Phil: Where I'm from that dog don't hunt!

OT fan: Why is it Fast Times at Ridgement High can be restored to BluRay but not the original Star Wars its ridiculous!

Dr. Phil: Now in the audience today is Lucas's daughter Katie who now writes for one of the Star Wars shows, Katie what do you think of all this?

Katie: I think anyone who doesn't like my dad's vision and his changes to make the saga better can go suck it!  You guys can go f*ck yourselves

Ot Fan: Thats not helping!

(The OT fans and Katie are now yelling back and forth, Katie is heavily bleeped yelling F*ck you at the top of her lungs)

Dr. Phil: oh geese

Lucas chuckles: Thats my daughter.

Dr. Phil: I'd say she joined the dark side

Lucas chuckles

Dr. Phil: Now George you know what a narcissist is?  Its someone who thinks only of themselves and I"m sensing that here, now we have some counselors backstage….

Lucas' attitude
Time

This is a good thread but I think its off in terms Lucas wanting to overly explain things for kids.

I think Lucas hated every compromise and prosthetic creature that existed in the OT.  His original synopsis was really a mix of prequel scope and OT characters.  As he began to work more on the script, everything started to become about what could be put on screen budget wise.  When he finally got on set with the mess of the practical crew and droids, it became a nightmare for him.  Worse with Empire since this crazy director he knew from USC was spending too much time and money on how a shot looked.

I think Lucas doesn't care much for the OT personally, or with the changes finds it livable.  The fact that there are incredibly devoted and hardcore fans who love every frame of the untouched OT does not matter to him.  To Lucas, the OT just looks hokey.  I think if Jurassic Park hadn't happened, there would be no prequels.  His answer to every kid about the prequels was "someday" or in his mind "When I can make a film that doesn't look really fake"

I think for years he lived with the fact the movies were not what he wanted and when CG came around, he finally got inspiration to basically fix everything, rethink characters etc.  I don't think it had anything to do with making it clear for kids or even merchandising as much as 20 years of living with something he probably didn't like.  Thats why in all the interviews, the SE is 97% his vision now.  Unfortunately, the 77 ANH is infinitely better without the CG as we all know.  But Lucas will never see it that way.  I think we're lucky we got the GOUT honestly.  Lucas apparently is into preservation but theres something about the OT as it was that he just couldn't stand and which overrides that.

...and WE get the bad rap!!!!!
Time

I think Lucas wore that shirt to look "cool" to fans and haters alike.  He seems to have a good sense of humor about such things.

His opinion on the OT, besides completly ignoring it past 1997, is that he already released them untouched as bonuses and the discs didn't sell.  So in his own world it proves his point that the vast majority don't care.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Here are my thoughts on the box set, mind you I actually enjoy the prequels as well as the OT

1.  The extras for each film on their individual disc stink.  Besides the deleted footage (nice) is the 3D maquette you can turn around which will be fun for about 30 seconds.

2.  Full length dcumentaries devoted to "fandom" and "parodies"  Are they kidding?  Nobody gives a crap about fan films as their pretty much all mediocre and done by bored LARP players.  I can see a 10 min segment on parodies but a huge chunk of disc.  Ugh.

3.  No holy grails.  No Lost Cut of Star Wars before it was re-edited back in 77.  No remastered original editions.  They didn't even put the GOUT on these.  Usually box sets are intended for you to throw out the old dvd copies.  Definitly not here.

4.  All of the box art is wretched.  That Anakin/Luke painting is a disaster.  I don't even know what to think of the Vader one.

5. No isolated scores

Ok what could the box set have had?  How bout a separate disc with the Making of Star Wars and Empire by Rinzler as something you could still frame through.  How bout all the scripts?  How bout From Star Wars to Jedi?  How bout anything of value!

The deleted scenes will be online probably before the disc even hits stores, thats what we all want to see.  But unless the transfer is insane this is just not the uber box we've been promised for years.  Remember when George said "I want the box to be almost a tutorial on the whole filmmaking process?" That was years ago but I guess he was too busy letting Katie Lucas write Clone Wars episodes to remember.

Rant over, thanks :)
