A summary of GOUT-sourced Custom DVDs
Time

Thanks for this, Moth3r.

I've created remastered x264 versions of each of these films using g-force's scripts. I'm interested in adding several different audio mixes to each of my x264 films and am trying to find out what audio mixes are available for each of the three films. Could you possibly list them in this thread? What are the best mixes/differences between them that are worth adding to each film? I download hairy_hen's recently completed SW 70mm mix today and am trying to source Belbucus' SW 77 Mono Mix (if anyone can PM links to this, I would appreciate that). I gather that for each film the Stereo PCM mixes ripped from the 93 LaserDiscs are considered better than the GOUT stereo mixes, is this correct? Are there anymore mixes available?

Thanks.

My 2p suggestion if the ANH:R v2 does go ahead - the only thing which bothers me when I watch ANH:R is the music transition after Ben is struck down by Vader, where Luke shouts"No!". It just needs a slight re-edit to make the two pieces of music fit together better. I have no problem with the choice of music (I love the prequel music in the duel, it works great) it's just that transition being a little sloppy which bothers me.

Damn, I've always though the DD 5.1 on LD had 640 kbit/s.

But really, just 384. Lower bitrate than DVD, that's surprising.

I also read that the bitrate in cinemas for DD is just 320(!!!) That's shockingly low

On 35mm film, the AC3 bitrate has to remain low because there is very little physical room for the digital information to be printed onto the film stock, whilst also being very prone to damage (mainly because the AC3 track is printed between the sprocket holes) so a lot of the available data bandwidth must also be used for error correction. I'm guessing AC3 soundtracks stored on Laserdiscs have to contend with similar issues, due to LD being an analogue storage format like 35mm, hence the low AC3 bitrate.

This was (one of the reasons) why DTS was invented for 35mm film use; there is only a sync pulse track on the actual film stock which allows the DTS audio tracks to be contained on data CDs which are synced to the film. This negates the problems of data bandwidth limits and physical damage necessitating high error correction.

Technically (because AC3 soundtracks on 35mm film and DVD all use the same compression algorithms) if the AC3 soundtracks are both compressed from the same master, your DVD could have a higher fidelity soundtrack on it than the film projected in cinemas.

also still messin with possible AVCHD versions as well, but I think it might be a good idea to make them 720p as apposed to 1080p as requested, but what is the resolution of a 2.35:1 video for 720p? never messed with this reso before and have no idea what to resize the video to and what size borders to add.

I have all the #'s for standard DVD's to figure that stuff out but not for 720p & 1080p video projects.

So are there people here interested in Xvid versions? and if so I was messin around with making them a few days ago and realized something,we usually clip off the black bars for Xvids, but I will not be able to in this case,at least not on SW and ROTJ,the Alien subs are now in the black border,so what I want to know is will this be a problem for you guys?

I created 480p x264s of the OT using g-force's script. I cropped the black bars off and created an .srt file for the subtitles, which is much more versatile than burnt in subs anyway. I can send you the srt files for ANH and RotJ if you want - PM me.

If you are going MPEG-4 with these, I would recommend doing x264 encodes as this is a much better codec than XviD now, also you could put them in .mkv containers instead of .avi containers, then you can mux the .srt files into the .mkv and it will be one convenient file.

I made an x264 of each of the OT films using g-force's script with the GOUT, and this discussion of different pre-synced audio mixes made me think I would love to mux these into the my OT mkvs so I could choose between the different audio mixes available. We have the Laserdisc PCMs, someone's upconverted 5.1 mix and also M0th3r's mono mix of ANH. Is that all of the alternate mixes available/worth getting hold of which sync with the GOUT?

Would anyone like to upload all of these mixes (and/or any others worth getting) to a torrent site somewhere? I'd love to have them to sync to my x264 video encodes.

Thanks

...NTSC discs don't play in PAL players. The jitter is a result of the format itself and applies equally to NTSC broadcasts as to DVDs. NTSC has a framerate of 60Hz; movies are made at 24fps. That works out to 2.5 video fields per film frame, so they show alternating frames for 2 and 3 fields each. PAL has a framerate of 50Hz, so they just speed the whole thing up to 25fps and show each frame for 2 fields. Some find the speed-up more distracting; others prefer it to the jitter (you notice it most in shots with steady motion or panning — the first shot of any Star Wars film is one of the easiest examples).

There's also the inevitable fact that PAL has a higher resolution — 576 lines as opposed to 486, or fewer in both cases for letterboxed pictures.

Some of your info is incorrect, RoccondilRinon. NTSC discs play in PAL players no problem pretty much all of the time, and 3:2 pulldown (jitter) only affects NTSC video which has been converted from 24fps to 30fps. If the video was originally recorded in 30fps (ie, TV programmes), then they run smooth. NTSC also has 480 lines of horizontal resolution, not 486.

The reason I posted, though, was to say I created a version of ANH:R which bypasses all of these problems. I took the video from the PAL DVD9, which has the highest quality image available due to having more horizontal lines of information than the NTSC9 release, and slowed this down to 23.976fps to have it run at its native speed. I then took the audio tracks from the NTSC9 release and added these to the video (which fitted perfectly - I checked the video speeds and there is only a 1/1000th of a second difference after converting the PAL video to 23.976fps compared to the NTSC version). I then ran the video file through MeGUI to create an x264 mkv file, muxed the AC3 audio tracks and the whole thing fits onto a 4.7GB DVD5. No more PAL speedup, no more NTSC 3:2 pulldown, and the image is transparent to the quality of the PAL9 video (the highest quality video image available) since the quants of the x264 file all fell below 14.

Obviously, this version can only be played on a PC (which is how I watch all of my films). If people are interested, I could up it to Demonoid?

i have stated already that the original video file for ANH:R no longer exists and that a mkv version would be pointless as it wouldn't be any better quality than someone could produce by using the DVD-9 as a source.

Fair play, must have missed you saying that somewhere else. I'll keep trying to hunt down the PAL DVD9 so I can make the best quality x264 encode of ANH:R as possible.

Also (aimed towards the other comments about MKV), an MKV is a video container, like an AVI. It doesn't dictate the actually encoded format of the video, but the standard in the HD Rip scene is for the video to be compressed to x264 when in an MKV container, but it can contain any MPEG4 video file like DivX, XviD, H264 etc.

also i have had a few people asking me what format the 720p version of ESB:R will be. well it will only be 720p DL-AVCHD for PS3 & blu-ray players & possibly a mkv. i will not be doing a compatible format for XBOX360's and especially a HD-DVD version. HD-DVD is dead guys, please get over it. you should have brought a PS3 (lol). i was recently given a XBOX360 elite and as a games console i quite like it but as a media player it is crap.

I know I've mentioned this before, but it would be really great if you could encode an .mkv of ANH:R, just so we can have it at the highest quality currently available and at 23.97fps. Obviously in Standard Def, but it would be better quality than the NTSC DVD9 currently doing the rounds (higher res for a start since i know you editied it in PAL res) and not have the problems of NTSC 3:2 pulldown or PAL speed-up.

Just a consideration if you're away and fancy leaving your PC encoding for a weekend or something ;)

Thanks

Like I say, I don't think there is anything more you can do, I reckon I'm finally happy with the quality of the OT... short of Lucas putting out a version without that horrible early 90s digital smearing!

Thanks again man, I can't wait to run ESB and RotJ through this bad-boy so I can enjoy them cleaned up too.

G-force, just checking, but are you planning on developing this script any further, especially for ESB and RotJ? Not that I think it's necessary, it's just that I'd rather know before doing 2 more 4day encode-athons for these 2 movies :)

ANH came out perfectly btw, watched it the other night and it looks stunning compared to the GOUT DVD. I'm ripping the selectable Greedo subs off the DVD tonight to add to my mkv file and then it's perfect!

Wouldn't it be something like 854x480 & 1024x576??

That would be the case for square pixels, but the pixels aren't square.

-G

But for my purposes, I want square pixels as I will be playing this on my PC monitor. I've finished compressing the video, added the flag to make it 853x368 (56 pixels from the top and bottom of the image cropping the black bars as much as possible) in the mkv and it has come out at exactly the same resolution as the original DVD.

Thanks g-force

I first altered the line which adds a black box around the film near the end of the script to:

PAL==false ? Spline16Resize(720,384).Crop(8,12,-4,-14,align=true).AddBorders(6,5,6,5)

This cuts out the maximum amount of the black border (to aid compression) while still keeping it mod16 (I've understood the importance of keeping things mod16 now) without over-cropping the image.

It's now encoding via MeGUI (46 hours in, another 45 to go!) to x264. When this is done I will use mkvmerge to add an aspcect ratio flag to the mkv container to make it 853x368 (I think this is the horizontal res you meant, satanika) and then it will display perfectly.

From my understanding, this method will keep compressability at a maxiumum by removing the black borders as much as possible, but negates an extra "resize" step, which would degrade the image quality slightly while hindering compressability slightly by increasing the film's image size.

It worked on the 20 second clips I tried it on, anyway :)

Also, I've obviously cut out the subtitle code from the script and will be adding an srt into the mkv container when it's done.

GOUT image stabilization - Released

Hi, found this thread yesterday, was playing with this script all last night. Really well done, excellent project.

I was posting for a little help though. I'm going to run my NTSC ANH DVD through this script, but instead of re-compressing it back to MPEG2, I was going to output it as a 4.7GB x264. I figured out all of the x264 compression things I need to do using MeGUI last night, but I just need a little help on cropping/re-sizing ANH so it will output properly.

Basically, after processing the d2v through this avs script, I am left with an image that isn't anamorphic and has the black borders around the image. What do I need to add to the foot of the script so that I can feed the avs straight to MeGUI and have that output an x264 in the correct anamorphic aspect ratio and with no black around the edges? I've messed with cropping it and figured if I use this at the end of the script:

crop( 6, 60, -6, -62)

it gets rid of all of the black borders perfectly, but how do I then make it anamorphic? Also, do I need to worry about mod16 or anything like that? I'll just be playing this on my PC so does it matter? I'm mainly doing this so I can avoid adding 3:2 pulldown to the video and can play it at 23.97fps on my PC - I hate 3:2 pulldown!

Thanks

Big fan of the jump frame removal Adywan, but i've always disliked how long (14 frames or so) it takes for Luke to react to closing door.

I've quickly removed those 14 offending frames, cutting Luke out with an Animatte in Avid. I'm pretty happy with how Luke reacts to the door now rather than standing there for that little bit extra.

I've uploaded the video to YouTube.

Comparison:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPKH5qjLmog

Single:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-sBXvRjP5g

YouTubes low quality does mask the dodgy outline around Luke and the door and also the flash colour change on Lukes getup. But all could be taken care of at full res.

Anyway let me know what you guys think. Cheers.

This is definitely better, but maybe not quite as quick a reaction as this. Maybe leave it a couple of frames longer, about 1/3rd of second?

Hi Ady, wonderful news on ESB:R being 720p :) Have you thought about releasing ANH:R as a 480p AVCHD x264? Compressing the raw file of ANH:R down to a DVD5 sized x264 instead of DVD9 MPEG2 would save some of the MPEG2 compression artefacts, as well as the colours coming out better too. I also like having films as x264s so I can play them on my PC without having to mess around with DVD menus and having it at 24fps gets rid of all the 25fps PAL/30fps NTSC problems too.

Just a suggestion, keep up the wonderful work, ESB:R is looking incredible so far.

Superman by Taolar (Formally: Son of Jorel) WORKPRINT AVAILABLE
Time

Hi Taolar, I just watched your SOJ edit and I am very very impressed :) Overall, fantastic work, this is the best cut of Superman I and II I have seen yet, you have really utilised the various pieces of Superman II in a really coherent way to extend the first film and make it flow as it originally should have.

Overall, I can see that a few parts (especially in the second half) are a little rough and am confident you will go over everything with a fine toothed comb and make things as perfect as possible before the final release, so I won't go over minor quibbles like these. The main points I wanted to mention are as follows, to give some suggestions and constructive criticisms:

As has been mentioned by lorang, the scene where Lex is explaining the missile launch plan to Superman while stood on the big map in his lair is rather rough and jumps about a bit too much, leaving me a little confused. The one thing that stuck out at me as being most confusing is the very first shot of the missile being launched, it seems to appear from nowhere after Lex and Superman are talking. What I think would work better is if the dialogue continued from that section into his "Now, you may or may not know..." dialogue, but have the first missle launch shot as the visual while he is giving a voice-over explaining his plan. I feel that this would make a much tighter connection between how Lex's "plan" and the missile launch are connected, as it isn't immediately obvious why this missile shot is there, only later on in Lex's dialogue where he explains how a bomb will sink California, by which point I was a asking "What is the missile about?" Then the cut between him smashing the map with his cane and the second shot of the missile going off course really can make an impact and make the audience go "Oh, shit!" Do you get what I mean? It's just this first shot of the missile launching seems a little too abrupt at that point in the scene. Mixing it into a voice-over would make more of a connection in the viewers mind, I feel. It woud also lose a bit of that initial walking around on the map, birds eye view shot, which isn't very good IMO, especially as it looks like Lex is talking to Otis about the plan as SM is out of shot for the first few sentences, and it made me go "Oh, he's talking to SM" when he walked into shot, which again is messy.

How are you going to transition from part 1 to part 2, the couple seconds of Black between them is too much atm, but I guess this is still rough. I'm hoping you lose all relation between part 1 and part 2 and they flow together as one film, I don't want in any way to feel like I'm wathcing two seperate films here.

You said you'll be re-editing the section where the villians first land on Earth, which I feel is necessary, it is a little shoppy here, their first landing scene is probably a little abrupt, needing a little longer before it cuts to Niagra (where the sound should fade in as it is too dramatic a cut for an initial scene which isn't dramatic).

I def agree with lorang's comment about adding in the arm wrestle with Ursa, if only briefly. It does make a bit more sense why the guy goes through the window, just needs that couple extra seconds to tie that together better, I feel. PS love the Johnny Cash music here instead of the Bee Gees, perfect choice :)

I really love how you added the TV footage onto the television of the initial shot of the Whitehouse, that is SO much better than either the silly Mt Rushmore or the footage used in the Donner cut. That is a much better idea. One thing that bugs me though, but I'm sure you can't do anything about, is that you see the back of the presidents head here, which kinda ruins the fake president when the villians first break into the Whitehouse. If someone was paying enough attention here, they would realise that the bald fake president who kneels before Zod initially wasn't the same guy as in this brief scene. It sticks out at me, but I don't know what you could do about this, just something I wanted to mention.

I gotta say, if there is any way you can introduce some Jorel footage back into the scene where SM gets his powers back, I would be very happy to see it. I understand your argument about Jorel lying to SM but to me, this is about a parent protecting their child. He lied to protect him, to try and persuade him not to forsake his powers for Lois. I can accept that. This scene in the Donner cut made me love Superman II so much more as I hated the "mystery" of how SM managed to come back with his powers without any explanation, it just seemed lame to me. When I saw the Donner footage it made me so happy, especially with Jorel using the line "The son becomes the father and the father becomes the son" again, which is so beautiful. This Donner version of this scene really tied it into the first film, and about how SM first loses his adopted father, then, which must be so emotioanlly painful for him, he chooses to to lose his paternal father for the greater good of humanity, which really shows how selfless he has understood he must become to fullfill his destined role on Earth. Sorry to rattle on, but yeah, for me the Donner version of this scene is so amazing that I would be very sad to see it missing from your cut, even though you don't like how Jorel lies to him, I think that from an emotional POV, it makes sense to me and is one of the most significant messages in the whole film.

Finally, I really like your new ending, definitely superior to the super-kiss or the spin-back-time endings, both of which I always thought were lame. I do think that your new shot footage needs to be made a little more subtle, it is a bit too forcefull atm, a subtler cut would probs be better, and the sound isn't mixed to well, there is too much room atmos on the voice, it doesn't sound like it is has been recorded in a studio then played back on a TV set, but yeah tweak that and it'll be great. I think the pace is a little bit too fast though in this final section. After a 3 hour film I think it needs to conclude a little slower, giving more time for SM and the audience to contemplate what has happened between him and Lois and where he must go now, it just seems a little rushed, extend it a bit more and it'll work perfectly.

Hope all this is constructive, sorry if I'm waffling a bit and dont make loads of sense, hope you get what I mean. Overall, this is gearing up to be the best version of SM I have ever seen, with the final touches completed and a final DVD released, it will be a fan edit masterpiece and you should be very pleased of what you have achieved :)

Thanks again.

I've been off work recovering from an operation for the past 2 weeks, and last week I sat down and watched every single Superman film (including both the Lister and Donner versions of II). Not watched the old ones since I was a kid, and it hit me straight away how much potential the first 2 movies have for being absolutely incredible if edited together properly and a hybrid of the 2 versions of II were made. Basically I wanted to say, your project sounds incredible and I'm really excited about seeing the results since I'm on a big Superman trip atm and from what you are letting us know so far, your Son of Jor-El edit sounds like its gonna be amazing.

Hey CW!

This sounds like a magnificent project, I really look forward to its completion, I was thinking about in the NY purchasing the set made by Tim Skutt advertised on his site, but it sounds like your version will be much better than this set with all of the love you have put into making it perfect! From your comments, I gather you may be in the UK. If you can get a set to me (we'll work it out via email, just PM if interested) I will happily seed this to DEATH on whatever tracker people want it distributed on. Good luck with getting this finished, many an English speaking fan of this amazing series will be eternally grateful to you when it is complete!
