@poppasketti There’s an edit in which Luke has his green saber from Return of the Jedi. Do you plan on using it for your edit?

I don’t think so. I’ve read many arguments for and against this change, and to me they come out a wash. Without getting too far into it, I think there’s symbolic reasons why the blue saber makes sense in the story.

I may be in the minority, but I admit the blue saber didn’t spoil the surprise for me when I saw it in theater the first time. On repeat viewings, it still doesn’t bother me.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody, I’m glad it’s looking okay!

That looks nice! Honestly that first shot is so quick I don’t think it is really necessary, unless you wanted that attention to detail.

The first shot is actually considerably longer, I just trimmed it in the vimeo post. It starts with the tie fighter crashing down in the hanger and Finn waking up. Rose then drags him around a bit. If I can get phasma to appear for a few seconds in the background, I think that would help. It will take longer, though, because I will have to roto Finn and Rose. That’s the path I’m going down, but it may take a while before I have anything to post.

Thanks again!

Okay, I found some time this morning to play a little, and was able to replace one of the stormtroopers in the wide running shot with phasma. In fact, it’s the stormtrooper that Finn jumps over as they run towards the shuttle. The only question would be how to get her into the previous shot. I think the trooper immediately over Finn’s shoulder would be too difficult with all of the rotoscoping that would need to be done. It also doesn’t appear perspective-wise to line up with the trooper than Finn jumps over. This is first pass, so curious if this plus a more obvious reveal in the first shot would work!

Recoloring the armor with new dubs is the best idea (thanks for volunteering, AbramsPt!), but I have a feeling it will require more than just a power mask in AE. It will probably require fully rotoscoping each shot in Mocha. That would be a ton of work for what, for me, would not be a huge payoff.

I’m not even sure how I feel about completely removing Gwendoline Christie’s voice. I can try a test in the future, though, when I have more time. Right now, work is very busy!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Yes, that would be ideal. The problem is her role in Finn / Rose’s arrest and the climactic moment of Holdo’s suicide attack are inextricably linked. I don’t think there’s a way to do it convincingly. It was silly to bring her back given her arc with Finn was complete in TFA and should have died on SB. Since they brought her back to be a familiar face among the storm-troopers, though, I’m okay with her going about her duty and this time being beaten by fate. Holdo’s shocking maneuver was a more satisfying victory for the rebellion in this moment, and I didn’t want/need Finn to have another showdown with Phasma, which by comparison, seems like small potatoes. I’d also rather Finn express his commitment to the rebellion through his other actions in the film.

Ok, so here’s the augmentation of the legs!

As a note, I thought about trying a removal, and I have the tracking pretty locked down, but painting in the details of the chair and balcony behind chewy is pretty tough without anything to work with. If I had a reference of what that chair looks like from the front, I could possible do a removal. I had to rotoscope Yoda anyway to keep his coloring.

Also, oddly enough, the original motion tracking (presumably by ILM) in the original shot seems off, and background bounces around as the camera tilts. This is easiest to see by watching the top-right corner towards the end of the shot. Unless this is supposed to be the platform bouncing?!

I’m glad the Chewie stuff is getting closer! A second bandolier for the Yoda attack shots sounds like a good idea. I also like the thought of adding another piece of gear like a shoulder pad.

Anyone know where I can get some high res stills of a piece of gear to add onto Chewie?

(BTW, this is my wife’s birthday weekend, so not sure when I’ll get to these last changes!)
