Just sent you the link, jarbear!
Just sent you the link, jarbear!
Hey you caught me at the right moment, pm sent!
That’s something I would definitely consider! Anything is on the table, really, after I see TROS Monday. I should say right now, though, that I’m only skimming comments here because I’ve managed to keep myself spoiler-free since the first teaser trailer, so I only vaguely understand how that would make sense!
I’m very excited and a little nervous (please let this be good)!
Pm sent
Thanks For doing this, Ash! I’m thrilled to be on the spleen!
Hello, I am happy to say that I have posted the V2 of Rekindled! The first post has been updated, and any vimeo links needing updates have been posted as well. If you already have a link to the V1, it’s the same link so no need to ask again if you’ve made a request previously, though you are welcome to if you can’t find it!
V2 is not a dramatic shift, but more of a refinement pass based on feedback and my own notes. I must thank Hal 9000 and jarbear for their updated version of Canto Bight, which fleshes out the casino planet a little bit more, giving it more meaning and showing us broom boy briefly.
There are also many suggestions that I tried, and decided not to implement for various reasons. I’ve listed those below as well.
V2 Changes:
Changes I tried, but decided against:

Exactly, the “miniaturized Death Star tech” line is already removed so I don’t think there’s any need to worry about the laser colors.
I am uploading a workprint now. It’s a render straight out of premiere at 10mbps with 5.1 aac. Total size is 10gb, but it won’t be the same quality as the final, which is encoded with ffmpeg.
It has four changes:
I’ll send the workprint to anyone interested, and overall, my goal is to have a final V2 before the movie comes out, hopefully sooner. Thank you!
Here’s a suggestion: when you inserted a reaction shot of Kylo after the cannon fires, there’s some “light” on his face as the door blows up. Can you do the same thing with your edit of the flying Leia scene where Poe and the others are reacting to the ship being hit?
Here’s a pass at that idea, just adding a little reflection to Poe, Finn, and Billie Lourd.

It’s a small change, but I think it helps the continuity. Thanks for the idea, FreezingTNT2!
@poppasketti Here’s a suggestion: can you remove the “oh no” at the beginning of the film? It disrupts the flow of the scene (seriously, it flows so much better without this) and basically tells us how we should react, when in reality we already know that it’s an “oh no.”
It’s not a bad thought. I’ve seen it before without the line and it does work nicely. I’m not sure that I think it is better, though, just different. The “oh no” does feel Star Warsy to me, if that make sense. Does anyone else like that change?
Make Luke’s lightsaber in ANH and ESB green, and his ROTJ saber blue.
Replace “these are the first steps” in Rey’s TFA vision with “maclunkey.”
Haha! Well, I do have them edited into the sequence currently. Now, I might not have time now to make the master encodes with updated chapters, subs, etc., but would a workprint-type file suffice?
PMs sent!
Thanks, Hal! I think I was able to recreate it, but I’ll let you know after I check it a few times.
That logic makes perfect sense, thanks Hal! That’s probably what I will end up doing as well.
That’s not a bad idea. Not sure I can make it convincing, because it’s a wider shot with a window, but it’s worth a shot.
Here is what Hal came up with after we played around.

Finally got a little time to catch up!
jarbear, what you and Hal have done here I think is perfect! I think it addresses the feedback we’ve gotten about the Jedi boy at the end being too out of context. It also gives you more context about Canto Bight which resonates thematically with Finn’s story.
The only thing I wonder about is where you cut Rose’s line about fathiers “I’ve never seen a real one.” It’s not an important line, but I feel like it finishes the moment of her excitement about seeing them, which is why they ran out to the balcony in the first place. I don’t think the line creates any issues? So I may consider putting it back.
Right now, this and the Phasma body add to the shuttle scene are the changes I intend to make for V2.
Hey Gabe!
Thanks for posting! I appreciate the edit, and it’s always fun to see other ideas.
What you posted is definitely different from what I have. You made it so that immediately after Poe points out the window we cut straight to Leia on the gurney. The thing is, it feels too abrupt to me, and doesn’t pace out right with the music or position of the characters. The bridge just exploded, and we immediately see and hear Leia getting medical treatment. More importantly, because it happens so fast, we don’t have time for it to sink in that anything has happened, and we lose Kylo-Ren’s reaction to what he thinks is his mother’s death, which I think is a very important moment.
Hey jarbear! Great to hear from you, and I just sent you a PM.
I definitely will check out the canto bight tweaks you posted, thank you both for working on that! I think will likely be an essential part of a V2!
For those requesting PMs, I should mention that the latest encode is still the June 21st encode, so it doesn’t have the recent Phasma change (which is currently the only change since). Work is very busy now, so I won’t be able to make a new encode for a little bit.
Here’s a long post of responses to some of the suggestions. All good ideas, and I could change my mind down the road, even if I say otherwise below!
I would like to see a version where Rose knocks Finn out of the way right before the AT-AT shoots him. I think that alone, making it objectively clear that Finn was doomed regardless, would help make Rose’s actions more palatable for a lot of people.
That’s a good alternative idea, which someone could easily make using bits of this version. I still don’t think I’d be able to buy that it wouldn’t kill them both. I also like this being simply Finn’s moment in the darkest hour of the Resistance. He’s lucky to survive his suicide run, but not by being saved. The momentum doesn’t shift until Luke saves the day, followed by Poe, and then Rey.
Do you plan on re-inserting the deleted scene where BB-8 shows Finn a hologram of Rey from the end of The Force Awakens?
It’s one of the better deleted scenes, but I don’t intend to use it. It does provide some motivation for Finn, but I don’t think it’s really needed, and believe it has an unfinished FX shot.
@poppasketti The first Rey and Luke scene looks so inconsistent with the ending of The Force Awakens (in terms of the sky and grass). Do you plan on color-correcting/editing it to look consistent with TFA?
This is the kind of thing that I understand why people would want to fix, but it just doesn’t bother me. I also feel like this is the type of thing that could spiral out of control, because first you fix the color, then the cloud cover bothers you and you decide to roto/replace the sky, then you realize that Luke and Rey look slightly different…etc. At some point, I just became okay that they were filmed years apart.
1# The final scene that ends on the small children from the horse arena. This makes no sense continuity wise especially with the small ring the boy has, since rose never gives it to him. (I used the 1080p version, if you have edited it out in another version might want to include that in the 1080p one)
2# This is a smaller issue, but for saving the focus and tension of the scene (and my sanity). Please would you cut that small scene with the one rebel fighter next to Gareth Edwards on Crait who out of nowhere comments on the ground with salt (the new coarse and ruff irritating sand).
For #1, there’s a chance of bringing back the brief introduction of the horse boy. I think Hal might have been working on that but I’ll have to follow up. But generally, the end of the film could take place anywhere, and those could be any oppressed children in the galaxy. The point is that word in spreading and Luke’s legend has been reignited. There’s excitement again for the rebellion. I agree the ring is a bit out of nowhere but I haven’t found a good way to remove that shot, and I love the scene otherwise.
For #2, honestly it just doesn’t bother me. It’s a strange planet they’ve come to, and he’s commenting on it. Besides salt can be course, but also fine. It’s not like here. Here everything is soft… and smooth— oh no! I’ve gone mad.
I wish…
- …that “The Jedi Steps” played when Luke confronts the First Order. I made my own version of this here, and I think it is SO much more powerful than the music that plays currently.
Hey Ziggy, thanks for the comments and suggestions! For your wish list, I do hope someone incorporates the Jedi Steps into the ending the way you had it. But, for me, “The Spark” is just too good to remove. It’s my favorite track from the new score. The Jedi Steps was my favorite from TFA, and they both give me goosebumps! But I can’t remove an incredible and climactic John Williams track. I hope someone else does, though, because it’s a great alternative!
Hey, thanks for the kind words, eveybody! And thank you for your thoughts and suggestions, I will try to respond to them later when I can (this is the busiest time of the year for me at work).
I hope you stick around these threads poppa, because I’d love to see your ideas for other projects in the future!
I do intend to stick around, as I’ve been following this site for many years! I don’t know if I’ll have another fanedit, but I’m happy to help others with FX work when I can.
It is possible I may do something with LOTR: Return of the King. Last year I started playing with it just to tweak some minor things that bugged me. I didn’t finish, but I may return to it eventually!
