PM sent!
Just to jump back in here, as I’ve been busy of late (also helping jonh with something), but I’d be happy to tackle the double rainbow shot if you send me the assets. I believe it was RogueLeader or jarbear (apologies if wrong!) who posted an early test of it that looked great and just needs to be comped into the shot in motion!
PMs sent!
I think the problem is finding good footage of Adam Driver with a look on his face (and the right camera angle) as would fit with Luke and Leia, something with subtle contentment and little motion. It’s actually hard to find. I think jonh did a great job moving over Luke and Leia- so Kylo can be next to Leia- and giving him Jedi robes, but it was just a still.
Hal, you’re the reason I went from lurker to editor on this website, and you’re just such a kind and generous person. I hope even after all of this is done, you hang around at least to chat!
Woooooo, go jonh!
Rey taking the name and inheritaing the legacy of our heroes could have been compelling, had her relationship with the legacy characters been fleshed out.
I think that was their original intention, but of course, Carrie Fisher unfortunately died. It really does seem like Leia was set up to do some major emotional/moral/thematic heavy lifting in TROS. I think they did the best with what they had to work with, but to me, this is biggest issue with the film.
jonh you have nothing to be sorry for!
It was a just a matter of time
Oh, I agree! Neither bother me. Those are just the two things that would seem closest to being meta to me.
I think the only real meta line is when Kylo says “You have no part in this story.” That’s a bit strange. The other meta bit is the cave scene, which clearly is designed to build anticipation for the audience. For Rey, however, a face would go a long way to help her feel some connection to her parents, something to hold onto.
The rest, I think, is consistent with Rey’s abandonment issues introduced in TFA, which Kylo keeps needling her about in TLJ.
KYLO: Your parents threw you away like garbage.
REY: They didn’t!
KYLO: They did. But you can’t stop needing them. It’s your greatest weakness.
It’s not so much who they were as identity or bloodline but who they were as people. She’s jealous of Kylo Ren; not because his father was Han Solo, but because ”You had a father who loved you, he gave a damn about you.”
That Rey’s parents threw her aware like trash is horrific, an idea Rey had to have considered but couldn’t accept until Kylo forced her to:
KYLO: Do you wanna know the truth about your parents? Or have you always known? And you’ve just hidden it away. You know the truth. Say it. Say it.
REY: They were nobody.
KYLO REN: They were filthy junk traders who sold you off for drinking money.
While “They were nobody” could be interpreted as “They weren’t important”, the takeaway I always got from the scene was Rey’s utter despair at finally acknowledging that she had been abandoned, and any hope that her parents were good people who loved her was a fantasy. It’s terrifying but engaging and relatable; and it’s undone in TROS.
Hal, the vimeo links should show a download button on the bottom right of the player. But I also just sent you a PM with the google drive link.
“Phantom Four” has nice alliteration!
Either yours or mine…
To be honest, when I originally sent in my voice clips I thought Hal only wanted “For Skywalker” so I said that line in, like, 6 or 7 voices and called it a day. I’m more than happy to record something different for my contribution because I agree that too many "For Skywalker"s is a little excessive.
Haha! I did the exact same thing. I’d also be happy to record something else if needed, and my wife might be able to also if you need more women.
I’ve posted the prores files for Option A and Option E to my Master Clips folder!
I toned down the lens flare, and made a couple more small tweaks. I still recommend Option E, because I think the scale and speed is the most correct for the camera lens/perspective. The Vimeo links are also downloadable so you can just select “original” to grab the prores.
Thanks to everyone for the amazing and helpful feedback! It’s always better when we collaborate!
Edit: Hal, that new 3PO works real well!
I think that second one is mine! You can cut it for sure if you want. There’s also some other takes with different energy!
Thumb Wars?
Haha, thanks Chase! I had a lot of fun doing that audio!
Dom, I agree on the flare. It might be just a bit much in the middle of the shot (I agree the 2nd smaller one looks good). If you think it looks good just as it passes the camera, I’ll taper it off much faster so it doesn’t linger so much! Thank you!
Whoa, sorry to pile on, both sound great! This is going to be fantastic!
I just came to say I’ve updated Options A and Option E of the Falcon end shot (pw: fanedit) with a few new tweaks, and I think this is close to end of the road for work on this! I’ll make both links downloadable and post to my Master Clips folder in the next day or two with any final tweaks.
For both, I made the Lars Homestead smaller by 10%. It may not sound like much, but it is significant. At first, I tried it at 20% smaller and, in my opinion, it felt like the composition was out of scale and unbalanced. I do recommend Option E overall because I feel like the pacing and scale feel much better to me, but to each his or her own!

And here’s that Very Important Update to the Tie Replacement Alts.
Ha! That’s okay! Thanks for checking. It’s good to have a holy grail, keeps me motivated!
There are ROTS soundtrack fan edits with clean versions of this (pulled from stuff like video games). I’ll send you a PM when I get the chance.
That would be amazing (a dream come true)! Thank you, and take your time!
A recent mention of “Anthem of Evil” in this or Hal’s thread brought to mind something that has bothered me for a long time, which is that I can’t find the original Darth Plagueis them from ROTS. There’s plenty of tracks with the opera scene and Palpatine themes, but they don’t have my favorite part, which is the 7 notes that play as Palpatine is saying “Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord…to create life.”
I remember the theories and videos surrounding the similarity to Snoke’s theme, but why I can’t I find Plagueis’ them in the original instrumentation anywhere? It might be one of my favorite musical bits in of Star Wars, which may be an over-the-top feeling based simply on the frustration of not being able to find it!
Here’s a link with two pieces:
https://vimeo.com/422499934
pw: fanedit
The first is from ROTS with the center channel turned off (you can still hear Palpatine a bit as he’s mixed into all of the channels). The second is my recreation of the theme using the choir from Anthem of Evil. I didn’t have all of the notes, and pitch-shifting sounded only okay, so I tried to cover for this by adding some flutes in garage band. I don’t know if this would be useful to anyone, but I love this theme, and thought it would be cool to think about somewhere.
Hal, love the voices and agree that I think at the beginning 2-3 could pop through more clearly through the chatter. Nevertheless, it’s a great cacophony and definitely gives the moment a grandness!
Could we possibly see something built more off option A? I loved the flght path of that one and I think it would be better if the jump to hyperspace is as far out of atmosphere as possible.
I can definitely make that available. For reference here’s Option A again. I’m not sure what I’d do to this to advance it, though. I see now that the speed/scale is way off as DominicCobb pointed out. Otherwise, the path is very similar to Option E (it’s built off the same comp). The hyperspace path could use more blur, and I could add a little lens flare towards the beginning. So I could circle back, and make that a second option. I’ll probably post both to my drive later this week!
Could you try to do something about the Lars homestead in the foreground? It sort of throws the scale off as the Falcon flies really close to it overhead and looks too small. I would suggest to shrink it or erase it completely.
Yeah, I kept trying to make the Falcon bigger, but if it still looks too small, I can try shrinking the homestead! I definitely don’t want to paint it out entirely, though, as it’s a nice detail that’s good for orientation. Another option would be to raise the flightpath of the Falcon slightly so it doesn’t come so close.
Hal, can’t wait to hear the “For Skywalker” moment!
Here’s what I think (hope?) is a refinement of the final shot with the Falcon flying off:
https://vimeo.com/417919422
pw: fanedit
It’s very similar to the previous Option E, but looking at it fresh after a few days, I wanted to add a little lens flare to integrate it, adjust the final trajectory/orientation of the ship and its hyperspace path, as well as a few other minor tweaks like matching the grain in the shot. Hope this is close!
Hal, Chase Adams, my apologies for the link issue! I made a change that affected the vimeo link (honestly, I’m not sure why).
Anywho, this should work: https://vimeo.com/421655865/736f7fb25b
Just thought I should let Poppasketti know that the shot of Vader’s TIE next to Luke’s X-wing is my new desktop wallpaper. 😉
Nice!!!
Maybe Poppasketti can use a model of Vader’s super star destroyer, since that was undeniably present at the second Death Star. 😏
That’s doable. Probably should go between Slave I and the Ferrari. What a weird sentence.
a delorean maybe? 😉
Ah, good call! Should’ve used that instead of the Ferrari.
