Hal, that edit works beautifully! Nice!

Here’s another pass of Ochi (so sorry for inundating you, but sometimes when I have a few free hours, it’s best to work through it when I can!):

For this pass, I redid the roto of the ship with Mocha so the edges should be clean and sharp. I also reduced the jet-stream a bit, added some engine pulses, and sped up Kylo’s hair to realtime. If the flightpath is still an issue, I’d have to rethink the shot a little bit or look for a 3D model (which I haven’t been able to find). Honest feedback welcome!

All good thoughts! I can work on a better mask on the ship (switch to Mocha instead of AE). That should be easy. I should also reinterate that the ship is not a still. It’s video, but obviously I’m limited to the motion in that particular shot, which is just it flying away from Rey. Also, krausfadr, thanks for the hair note. I’ll take another look at that!

Well, here’s a new pass of the Ochi ship!

I stripped out the audio to focus just on the visual for the moment. I rescaled every part of the shot, tweaked the ship and rotation, added some sand blowing texture to integrate the elements, and removed the hyperspace jump to see how that felt. I could also consider reversing the direction of the movement so Kylo is moving the other way.

I would love honest feedback! Generally, I’m wondering how close this is to being usable? I’m happy to keep going, but not sure how much further it can get!

That’s all fair! It feels copy pasted in After Effects, because, well, it is!

Ochi’s ship is not a model in this case, it’s actually the footage of it from Rey’s visions. This makes it harder to change the flight path, though maybe adjusting the smoke path (which is added) can help. I can also add some rotational motion at the very least to the ship.

Kylo moves so much, because if you look at the ground, the camera is moving left. If Kylo was really in the foreground, and the camera moving so laterally, Kylo should actually be moving a lot. Nevertheless, I could try to reduce it.

I can make another pass, but it might never “get there.” Can always try! Thanks for the honest feedback!

Hal, that edit looks seamless to me!

I don’t know where you head it at with a Rey Nobody version, so I can post this in the other thread if you prefer, but I revisited the “Just Rey” edit I did a couple of months ago and made a few tweaks with fresh eyes and ears. I think this is best version yet? It’s also master quality and the link is downloadable.

Hal, I want to thank you for sharing this. I watch the Bakshi LOTR as a funny-bad watch every once in a while, and had no idea this dub existed.

Axlanian, I sent you a PM with some audio that may or may not be good, but either way, I always have fun recording! I hope I get the part!

I feel like this scene is a pretty critical moment in the trilogy. I do wish it had more teeth, in that Chewie’s death had stuck, but at the very least you have Rey being forced to reckon with her dark power. Her need of support/guidance, which she lacked for most of her life, is never more clear, and it’s a great low point to have in a final chapter of trilogy/saga.

I guess the engine sound effects are just a placeholder, right?

Yeah, those are placeholder. I just wanted to show that if you leave the music sting as-is, there should be some sounds of the ship taking off during the last Kylo closeup to help ease the passage of time between cuts. Alternatively, you could tweak and extend the music. I’m not sure which would be better.

My only issue with that scene is the fact they would be flying into oncoming toe fighters. I always wondered how the escaped that chase so ease.

I actually think the ties would be coming from camera left on the last shot. This is based on where Poe points and where Finn looks as he runs back towards the ship. In any case, this is what we could do with the available material. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hal, if you want to go this route I might need a couple clips from you!

  • If possible, try to create a shot of the heroes escaping Passana on Ochie’s ship. It is very abrupt how the next scene is just them randomly in space somehwere when there was a swarm of TIEs

Something like this?

You might want to adjust the music, although the way it drops out felt kind of interesting to me. There’s also a bit of suspension of disbelief with a time jump between shots and going to hyperspace so quickly. We could leave out the hyperspace jump.

Also, fwiw, I like that the Kylo/Rey duel has no music. It feels raw that way, driven by the performances and tension between the actors. And the sounds of the waves crashing provide a great soundscape. If music is used, I do like the edit posted a few weeks back (sorry I can’t remember who did it) incorporating pieces of Kylo and Rey’s themes. I think it should be music that’s personal and relates to these characters.

I also agree with the slight reordering of the opening scenes to break up the Ajan Kloss material! It improves the pacing greatly by making it feel like time is passing, and flows more naturally from the dialogue.
