The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

I feel like this scene is a pretty critical moment in the trilogy. I do wish it had more teeth, in that Chewie’s death had stuck, but at the very least you have Rey being forced to reckon with her dark power. Her need of support/guidance, which she lacked for most of her life, is never more clear, and it’s a great low point to have in a final chapter of trilogy/saga.

I guess the engine sound effects are just a placeholder, right?

Yeah, those are placeholder. I just wanted to show that if you leave the music sting as-is, there should be some sounds of the ship taking off during the last Kylo closeup to help ease the passage of time between cuts. Alternatively, you could tweak and extend the music. I’m not sure which would be better.

My only issue with that scene is the fact they would be flying into oncoming toe fighters. I always wondered how the escaped that chase so ease.

I actually think the ties would be coming from camera left on the last shot. This is based on where Poe points and where Finn looks as he runs back towards the ship. In any case, this is what we could do with the available material. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hal, if you want to go this route I might need a couple clips from you!

  • If possible, try to create a shot of the heroes escaping Passana on Ochie’s ship. It is very abrupt how the next scene is just them randomly in space somehwere when there was a swarm of TIEs

Something like this?

You might want to adjust the music, although the way it drops out felt kind of interesting to me. There’s also a bit of suspension of disbelief with a time jump between shots and going to hyperspace so quickly. We could leave out the hyperspace jump.

Also, fwiw, I like that the Kylo/Rey duel has no music. It feels raw that way, driven by the performances and tension between the actors. And the sounds of the waves crashing provide a great soundscape. If music is used, I do like the edit posted a few weeks back (sorry I can’t remember who did it) incorporating pieces of Kylo and Rey’s themes. I think it should be music that’s personal and relates to these characters.

I also agree with the slight reordering of the opening scenes to break up the Ajan Kloss material! It improves the pacing greatly by making it feel like time is passing, and flows more naturally from the dialogue.

Just to jump back in here, as I’ve been busy of late (also helping jonh with something), but I’d be happy to tackle the double rainbow shot if you send me the assets. I believe it was RogueLeader or jarbear (apologies if wrong!) who posted an early test of it that looked great and just needs to be comped into the shot in motion!

I think the problem is finding good footage of Adam Driver with a look on his face (and the right camera angle) as would fit with Luke and Leia, something with subtle contentment and little motion. It’s actually hard to find. I think jonh did a great job moving over Luke and Leia- so Kylo can be next to Leia- and giving him Jedi robes, but it was just a still.

Rey taking the name and inheritaing the legacy of our heroes could have been compelling, had her relationship with the legacy characters been fleshed out.

I think that was their original intention, but of course, Carrie Fisher unfortunately died. It really does seem like Leia was set up to do some major emotional/moral/thematic heavy lifting in TROS. I think they did the best with what they had to work with, but to me, this is biggest issue with the film.

Idea: A TLJ Edit to please everybody?
Time

I think the only real meta line is when Kylo says “You have no part in this story.” That’s a bit strange. The other meta bit is the cave scene, which clearly is designed to build anticipation for the audience. For Rey, however, a face would go a long way to help her feel some connection to her parents, something to hold onto.

The rest, I think, is consistent with Rey’s abandonment issues introduced in TFA, which Kylo keeps needling her about in TLJ.

KYLO: Your parents threw you away like garbage.
REY: They didn’t!
KYLO: They did. But you can’t stop needing them. It’s your greatest weakness.

It’s not so much who they were as identity or bloodline but who they were as people. She’s jealous of Kylo Ren; not because his father was Han Solo, but because ”You had a father who loved you, he gave a damn about you.”

That Rey’s parents threw her aware like trash is horrific, an idea Rey had to have considered but couldn’t accept until Kylo forced her to:

KYLO: Do you wanna know the truth about your parents? Or have you always known? And you’ve just hidden it away. You know the truth. Say it. Say it.
REY: They were nobody.
KYLO REN: They were filthy junk traders who sold you off for drinking money.

While “They were nobody” could be interpreted as “They weren’t important”, the takeaway I always got from the scene was Rey’s utter despair at finally acknowledging that she had been abandoned, and any hope that her parents were good people who loved her was a fantasy. It’s terrifying but engaging and relatable; and it’s undone in TROS.
