Since Poita has returned, would preserving this in 3D be possible?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/STARCHASER-THE-LEGEND-OF-ORIN-35MM-3-D-OVER-UNDER-LPP-PRINT-1985-MINT-/201271990772

I already have a bid on it.

Yes, it is entirely possible, you scan the print, then split the scan into the left and right views.

You then go through and colour match the left and right streams, and do any cleanup required.

Then it is a matter of stabilising and packing the footage into the 3D format of choice. This will give you something that has the same 3D effect as the cinematic release, except with better colour consistency.

You can then go through and find the areas where the 3D didn't work so well, and start adjusting those to give a better experience.

3D VHD discs are prime to preserve.

Has Friday the 13th Part 3: 3D (field rather than anaglyph) been preserved yet?

Friday the 13th Part 3: 3D

Thank you and Cheers!

I have a very nice quality SBS Version of Friday the 13th part 3.  It utilizes the Blu Ray for One Eye and the DVD for the other.  For all intents and purposes it's HD and looks great.  The 3D effects are absolutely fantastic.  Things just fly out of the screen all the time.  It's effects like these that current 3D has been missing because Hollywood was concerned that it'd be viewed as not artistic enough.  I indirectly offered the files to TeamBlu to see if they wanted to put together a Friday Part 3 project release but never heard anything back.  I'd love to get Jaws 3D as well either officially or at least through a preservation effort.

I have a DVD of the Sensio Jaws 3D disc, it's cropped a bit, but it's SBS.

I can convert sensio to any other format if required.

If you could choose any 3D movie to be restored, which one would it be?

I like the older ones, e.g. Amityville 3D, Annai Bhoomi, The Bubble, Bwana Devil, Comin at ya!, Creature from the black lagoon,  Drive Angry, Friday the 13th part 3D, Hit the road running, House of Wax, Jaws 3D, Metalstorm, Parasite, Rottweiler, Spacehunter, Starchaser, The Starlets, Treasure of the four crowns, Vincent etc.

What would be your choice if you could only have one 3D film...?

I can get most 3D movies on 35mm film, so it would be possible to do a transfer from those sources.

It would be a lot of work, most were over/under 3D (two images per frame), so they would have to be stabilised and converted to frame packed for 3D viewing on current televisions.

It would be possible if one had the time to then colour correct for better consistency between the left/right views, and even fix some of the misalignment errors on the originals.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * <strong>SPOILER THREAD</strong> *

Watching the trailer again, that voice over just gives it such an awful quality.  The Dark Side....and the Light! Sigh

That first shot of Boyega is not flattering to the actor.  They should have picked a better more heroic shot for him.  The Ridley shot was neither bad nor good.

If those are the best shots they have right now, which usually is what a teaser is composed of, then this film could have serious issues...

I like the Boyega shot, he looks like someone stressed and sweating his arse off in a stormtrooper suit. You know, real.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * <strong>SPOILER THREAD</strong> *

I like it for the most part, BTW the effects look far less CGI in the cinema.

The X-Wing shots are lovely, I'm not going to watch any more trailers after this or get into discussions or get on the hype train, I am going to see this anyway, so don't want to see any more until the day.

The sabre? My take was that it was built 'on the rough' so the hilt parts were kind of necessary as some kind of exhaust to stop the thing blowing up. I like the raw sputtery, homebrew look of it. It is a bit cheesy I guess, but so was a lot of the OT. I liked the X-Wing pilout not having smooth makeup, he has blemishes on his chin, I'm hopeful the characters in the movie look like real people.

All in all, my gut feel is I will enjoy this if I don't watch any more stuff or get caught up in discussion/hype train, before it comes out.

If I can go in relatively fresh, and just take it as a fun sci-fi space opera, filled with some old friends, I think I will get to be 10 years old again for a couple of hours, turn the analytical brain off and just enjoy the adventure.

**RUMOR** Original theatrical cut of the OT to be released on blu ray!!

By "smart," he may be referring to at least including the UOT with the SE, if not released separately.  However, if the Diamond Edition line is any indication, Disney usually re-releases a title with some incentive to buy... such as remastered picture/sound, unseen deleted scenes, new bonus features, etc.

EXACTLY - and there's a huge incentive with the UOT, not released in the best part of 20 years!

Nah, even just a remastering of the SE in 4K, and a cinematic release of the SE would still be condsidered 'smart' in most marketing circles. A remastered to look better than before, coupled with some other material and some EpVII stuff, plus a limited run in Cinemas would build hype and rake in dollars, without having to do an OUT.

I don't think there is any evidence either way that they will do an OUT or an SE release. I hope they do an OUT, but can't see anything concrete that they will.

Holy Crap, Fusion 7.5 is now free
Time

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/fusion/training

Blackmagic just announced that Fusion 7.5 (the 2D and 3D compositing suite) is now available for download for free, they also have a Studio Version that is $995, but the only thing really missing from the free version is network rendering and stereoscopic support.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/fusion/compare

The free version works with up to UHD resolution.

This is massive news for anyone doinf fan edits or film restoration, this is a pro level tool that is now available to everyone. I can't believe BMD got this out so quickly after the acquisition announcement.

This will be a game changer for the amatuer film makers, between the free version of Resolve and Fusion, you really can be using the same tools that are used in production, at no cost. Amazing.

Sorry for what sounds like an ad, but this is exciting news for anyone here that is working on a project.

VHS is not a component format, so even players with component outputs will not output the standard VHS tape via component. If any did, it would be the same as using a composite to component converter anyway.

Weird to be correcting poita of all people, but... Although VHS isn't fully YPbPr, it is Y/C thanks to the color-under process. S-VHS machines benefit from this with S-Video output of standard VHS tapes. A few of the enormous "broadcast" decks also have component outputs from their TBCs, along with some D-VHS. Whether they look any better than the S-Video output of the same machine... I very seriously doubt it since the color bandwidth is so low.

A few VHS-DVD combos also offer component and even HDMI output of VHS, but apparently some of them have dot crawl so they don't use a fully separate path.

Always happy to be corrected :D

That is correct, VHS does store Luminance kind of separately to chroma, with the chroma signal downsampled and carried on a  heterodyned 629KHz subcarrier within the 3.58MHz NTSC signal.

As far as I was aware, all playback decks that can play VHS heterodyned the subcarrier back up into the standard subcarrier signal and passed it internally via composite video. The Y/C outputs and YPbPr outputs took the composite signal and combed and split it out again (as most laserdisc players do) I wasn't aware of any decks that would keep the signals separated all the way out on the schematics I have seen. Some claimed to, but when you look at the schematics, they are splitting the already combined signal.

It is good to know there are some decks that do pass the Y/C signal all the way through, it would be very cool, which ones have that capability? It opens up some modding options.
