1997 Star Wars Special Edition 35mm Project (a WIP)

The audio in the samples is the optical stereo, the DTS CDs we have as well, I am grabbing the optical Stereo so that it is not lost, and people may be interested in hearing it.

These samples have no colour correction, they are not matched to the print, and were scanned in log, so will look low contrast. The print however is greenish whenever there is an optical comp, and the greys are bluish where there is not.
You can see this in the x-wing cockpit shots that are close-up (no-comp, blue-grey) and wider shot (stars comped in, cockpit is greenish-grey).

The grade on all the SE prints of ANH I have seen are really all over the place.
So while these samples are not the grade that you see in the cinema, the differences between each scene are how they are, relative to each other, if you know what I mean. i.e. the inconsistency shot-to-shot is absolutely in the print.

The Death Star is closing in…

Is that hair loose again? Tell me the truth? If it won’t stay put they will replace me with CGI Tarkin.

I should have probably done this before we left…

How come Vader gets the cool ship?

Did I leave the oven on?

Oh crap!

Good, now I have the Princess all to myself.

I’m gonna blow up your Death Star

Oh no you’re not!

Oh yes he is!

Uh-Oh!

Go left… No, your left!

If only I wasn’t broke, this really seems right up my alley in terms of projects to help with. Oh, well.

I’m not sure anyone here is as broke as I am right now 😃
I’m in hock getting Reel6 done.

Reel6 looks good, I swear if I start watching the trench-run sequence, I always end up watching it to the end. It still absorbs me and gets the heart racing even after all these years and all these viewings. There is something magical about it.

Thanks again to everyone that has helped make this possible, I have already found over 120 frames that are sorely needed for the Original Trilogy restoration, so this is going to help a lot with that project as well.

If you have donated and would like to see reel6, please bounce me a PM.
I am using Resilio Sync, you can download it here:
https://www.resilio.com/individuals/
Be aware that the smallest files will be 4GB, and also that others in the group will be able to see whatever name you choose on Resilio Sync, and possibly also your device/computer name.

That isn’t raw, it is pretty much matched to how the print looks projected.
The raw file is a 16bit log file and looks quite different of course.

The Tatooine scenes are probably intended to look sunblasted and a high key look to get across the hot, sunbaked, dry desert feel. The black levels are certainly very elevated on the print, and the image very soft.

Yeah, playing with some of the footage, it does make sense of some of the choices made re colour on the 2004 edition.

Also, the UHD footage I just posted of the speeder and outdoor Tatooine has been colour balanced post scan. On the print, the exposure is very high, it is very low contrast and ‘blown out’ looking, I just did a balance to see what detail was hiding in there, that is not how it looks projected.

Annoyingly, a hair got into the gate of the scanner on Reel3, and I have to rescan the entire reel.

Part of the downside of working remotely.

sigh

Anyway, here is a 720P sample, complete with dancing hair, nothing done other than a very quick levels setting, thought people might want to see it in motion.

Note the Technicolor-style cue-dots/reel markers at the end. It’s about 200MB in size, I tried to make the file size small enough for anyone to get a look at it.

A higher bitrate and bit-depth version is uploading now for those who want something bigger.

EDIT: It’s up. 1.5GB. https://we.tl/SxaAFMqUAg
