It’s so hot here today. I had to walk the last 500 metres home as the road has melted, and my car was just slip-sliding in the molten tarmac and couldn’t get enough traction for the hill.
The water truck should be by later to water the roads so we can retrieve our cars. It is usually doinbg the rounds of the town, but has been absent today.

The air-con has failed at home, so it is a balmy 46C inside the house at the moment. ( I think that is around 115F for you imperial scum)

Hopefully the air-con can be fixed this week, the forecast is for hotter weather.

Things are on hold for a week or two, the scanner is being serviced to fix the focus problem. Should result in faster scans though once rectified.
As soon as the scanner is back up and running I’ll post a few more images.

We already have much better Emporer footage from the 1980 scans for ESB, I think I already gave Harmy and Adywan the scenes they requested.

I’m sure that you will hear from Mike if anything happens.

Last time I emailed Mike, which wasn’t very long ago, there was no news to tell.

The SE scan actually has more detail in the shadows then I was expecting. I wonder how Empire’s detail will compare to the Eastman prints of the 80s?

The shadow detail is quite good, triple-flash makes sure we get all of it, the resolution on the print is a little lacking, but the dynamic range is quite good, and the print is in far better shape than any of the original releases.

It is being scanned on a 6K sensor, with 4K Full Aperture output:
4096 x 3112 pixels. (UHD 4K is 3840x2160, so the scan is considerably higher resolution than ‘consumer 4K’)

This SE print doesn’t resolve as much detail as the IB Techs from the 70s, 4K in this instance should be more than enough.

Okay, there are a pair of TIFF files on the share that have the IR damage matte in the alpha channel if you’d like to take a look.

Anyone who wants to know what an Infr Red damage matte looks like…

The top image is what the film frame looks like under infra red light, the film is completely transparent to infra red, so the only thing the camera picks up is any dust, dirt, hairs or damage on the film.
The bottom image is the film frame the IR matte is taken from.

On the flip side the first two seasons of Saturday Night Live look great for their age. I’ve only seen one video glitch so far, and I’m not sure it would even have been visible on a CRT. You can tell NBC didn’t allocate their best cameras to the show early on though. It’s a shame they didn’t remaster the film inserts because the telecine they had at the time was pretty awful. (I could get better results shooting a projector aimed at a blank wall.) Whether that footage still exists is anyone’s guess.

It’s a shame a lot of Universal’s 60’s/70’s tv output shot on 35mm hasn’t been remastered. Some of what I see airing on Cozi TV are from really old broadcast video masters.

The company I work for is quoting on a lot of 70s sitcoms at the moment for restoration.
I’ve been looking at a bunch of master tapes of 70s shows over the last few months, and there is a rather awful historical footnote.
The ‘white’ sitcoms were shot on film, and occasionally in the highest tech tape based system of the day, the ‘black’ sitcoms at the same companies were shot on tape, with lower quality gear.
Make of that what you will, but it is why some US 70s tv shows look a lot better than others. Restoring the tape based ones is very hard to get looking good in hidef, but it is being done right now.

As for Syncing, I’d sync it to the DTS theatrical discs I’d guess.
I don’t know about cropping framing vs 2004, I haven’t watched the SEs except when I saw them in the cinema, and now the scans. I have the DVDs and the Blu-ray box set, but have not watched them.

Again, if someone could check for missing frames, that would be awesome.

The width varies from shot to shot, so it would look a bit weird as the frame would suddenly jump between filling the screen and not filling the screen from scene to scene.

Yes, the reds all have more detail, but I think that is also partially due to it not being 4:2:0 colour compressed.

Sorry I’ve not read this thread before, and am late to the party, but those panels are in fact quite green. I saw one of them out at the ranch in tjhe mid 90s when I was there.
Also, on the SE prints, they are pretty much as green as on the IB Tech prints.
The Tantive corridor panels also had a very slight mint-green to them, at least the ones I saw in person did. I also saw the head of the droid in the Tantooine shot, it was more yellow than orange, but not quite as crazy yellow as the bootleg.

The home releases are all over the place, telecine operators tend to balance towards neutral and colour correct on the fly. The operator would have made many decisions that had little to do with how the prints looked in cinemas.

As for R2 looking cyan in some shots, and arguing he should be white, well of course he is painted white, which means he will pick up any reflected light and take on some of that hue. In a predominantly greenish-blue environment, he could look a little cyan.
I’ll post some shots from the SE prints in the SE thread for comparison, but here is one from the SE print.
