Screening of the Original Version of STAR WARS July at Stockton, CA
Time

That’s pretty lame about the screening being the SE version as I only live about an hour away. Though I guess I’m glad now to not have a reason to visit a shithole like Stockton.

With all the fan preservations floating around I do find it hard to complain about George Lucas withholding the original versions of the film. Anyone who cares enough about seeing the theatrical release probably has found a way to watch it thanks to the internet and forums like this.

I hope we see more of process of how Disney make films.

You’ll never see the real process by which modern Disney movies are made. You’ll see the version where everything went off without a hitch, cast and crew all got along swimmingly and everything was just wonderful.

Watch “The Sweatbox”, the unreleased documentary about the making of “The Emperor’s New Groove” if you want to see how Disney makes movies.

Admiral Ackbar deleted scenes - new Tim Rose interview

Recognizable does not equal important. Admiral Ackbar is not important. He’s a gag character; a squid-man from a race called the Mon Calamari.

More rubbishing of the OT to defend the ST. Of all places I expect it to happen, OT.com is not one of them yet it’s where I’ve encountered it the most.

Ackbar like a number of other OT characters were brought back simply to appeal to nostalgia and get bums on cinema seats. Ackbar despite his short amount of screen time in the OT, became one of the iconic OT characters that are loved by fans and he deserved far better than his off screen death in TLJ.

I feel almost as sad for Ackbar’s actor feeling the way he does as I do for the obvious way Mark was affected by how they wrote Luke for TLJ.

Not “rubbishing” the OT. OT is great except for ROTJ, which is passable. Admiral Ackbar is a fun side character, but he’s not important to the story of the OT.

And I’m not defending the ST. Those movies clearly have problems, but giving Admiral Ackbar a sentimental death scene would not make TLJ a better movie. Plus, I don’t think you could get any real emotion out of a squid face. Any attempt at that kind of thing would be laughable at best.

DominicCobb said:

I mean obviously I feel for the actor, who wouldn’t in that situation. But at the end of the day, just because he’s become a meme doesn’t make him a character who’s important to the story.

Thank you. Yes, Admiral Ackbar is a meme and not much more.

To be fair, opinions are subjective. Luke used that quote when Kylo said a wrong fact.

Nevertheless I disagree that the assembly line and trash compactor are equivalent. First, the trash compactor feels like there’s real tension. I think it has to do with the simplicity of it all. No one is shooting or flying around them, just some great editing showing the walls slowly close in on themselves. There’s so much going around on Geonosis it becomes chaotic. Anakin is in trouble and Padmé is in trouble and Threepio is in trouble. Lucas tried to replicate the sequence but overdid it.

I kind of see both sides of this.

I think that Rey is somewhat underwritten, but not enough that I don’t enjoy her journey. Daisy Ridley’s performance is really what makes the character work for me. She elevates the character of Rey, and with a less charismatic actress, I could see myself being more apathetic. Sure, Rey struggles with her identity which comes to what I feel is a satisfying moment of self-honesty and discovery in TLJ. But aside from that, everything seems to come so easy to her which I find a little frustrating. I think we are missing out on a character that could be a bit more well rounded if faced with more obstacles from which she can gain more learning experiences.

Long story short, the writing of her character has been adequate up to this point, but no more than that. I hope she sees a bit more hardship in Ep. IX before it’s all said and done.

Among Disney’s SW, only R1 and TLJ display high cinematography of the same level seen on Episode I to VI. I really wish Rian had directed Episode IX 😦

First time I’ve ever heard someone extol the prequels as having “high cinematography”. Honestly I think they are among the least creatively shot movies I have ever seen. Even in Episode IV–great as it is–the cinematography is just serviceable.

J.J. Abrams is not nearly as creative as Rian Johnson, but his work in VII is so much better than anything in the prequels.

Disney released their entire slate for the next few years. They’re going to alternate releases of each Avatar and Star Wars every December (2021 Avatar 2, 2022 new Star Wars, 2023 Avatar 3, etc.).

I wonder if WB releasing Dune only a month earlier had anything to do with Disney pushing Avatar 2 back an entire year.

Really doubt that Disney would be worried that the sequel to (as of writing) the biggest movie ever will face rough competition against a remake of a box office flop directed by the guy who just made a long awaited sequel that turned out a box office flop (I’m really excited for it though). More likely than not James Cameron himself is delaying it (or, the same reason it’s been delayed for the last five years).

I really don’t see Avatar 2 being a big hit more than a decade after the first one. But yeah, I doubt Disney is worried about Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which is unfortunate as I think he’s one of the best film directors working today. Blade Runner 2049 was easily my favorite movie of 2017 and the best recent release I’ve seen in a long time.

I don’t believe this at all. These George Lucas rumors have been spreading for nearly every future Star Wars project.

This is not a rumor. It is fact. Abrams himself has stated, that they consulted Lucas while writing the script for TROS. He is the source in this instance.

I don’t think George’s input is as great as the media is making it out to be. The consultation probably went like this:
J.J. and Kathleen pitch George their idea for Ep. IX. George says, “yeah, sounds good.”

Honestly, I don’t think you could pay the man enough to care at this point.

I don’t, however, get this feeling from the “You talk first” bit at all. I’ve never understood the issue people have with that one.

It’s a joke quite out of tone that makes fun of the main threat. I would also add it’s not funny. TFA is the less Star Wars movie of the bunch with the way dialogues are written all along. It’s not that the dialogues are that bad, it’s just most of the time they don’t “sound” Star Wars to me. AotC has bad dialogues, but they still sound Star Wars, for example. And during the entire running time of TFA you get this kind of “out of SW” dialogues, giving the feeling of a bad fan fiction (the very weak script and the way older characters interact with the story and th new characters quickly transform what seemed to be a quite fun ride into a painful experience… not even mentionning that JJ filmmaking is very 90’s tv series oriented and looks cheap).

So I totally get that “TFA dialogues” qualifies as “the worst thing in any SW film”. But yeah, it’s not a scene or a sequence.

I loved the “You talk first” line and thought it was very funny and perfectly in line with OT Star Wars humor. It also established Poe’s personality instantly.

I thought the crank call at the beginning of TLJ was dumb and not very funny.

To me these two things are comedically very different. The former is very quick and feels very screwball to me, which is more in keeping with quick-fire humorous dialogue in the OT. The latter relies on a much more modern frame of reference and dwells on the joke for a very long time. Calling him General “Hugs” seems like something a 10-year-old would do. Also, the setup for the crank call was confusing. He calls Hux and then pretends he can’t hear him and then says he’ll hold. That’s not usually how crank calls work.

eiyosus said:

The Last Jedi stops for comedic pauses, while the other films let their humor run with the story.

Like the “Reach out” gag. Both actors pause and slightly break character for the sake of a punchline.

Nothing to do about the quality of the jokes, just the style. The “Who talks first?” bit is the same, but it’s the only moment in TFA with that style, as far as I can remember.

I think you nailed down the difference between TLJ and it’s predecessors in terms of the differences in humor. The jokes aren’t necessarily worse (though I happen to think they are), but it’s more so their execution that makes them fall flat. The crank call joke stops the movie dead and leaves one of those “Uh oh! Awkard!” silences that are more popular in modern humor. Imagine if Han Solo’s “reactor leak” conversation from Star Wars was paced the same way as Poe’s crank call from TLJ. It would be terrible.

That new concept art book cover pretty much confirms the trippy lightsaber fight we’ve been hearing about where Rey and Kylo keep “force flashing” across different settings, some of which being in zero gravity and/or underwater.

Maybe. A lot of concepts that are tossed around in early development never actually make it into the film.

It is a pretty cool piece of concept art though. Hopefully they’ll do something interesting with the final lightsaber battle and keep it from being too schlocky.

Can't be Bothered: justifying Rey's power vs Luke's
Time

NeverarGreat said:

Luke is the best stunt pilot in the outer rim territories, and has clearly been flying for years. And it’s notable that even he never does anything terribly flashy in the OT. Rey’s handling of the Falcon is about how you’d expect in the first few moments, but after that she successfully executes maneuvers far in excess of anything we’ve seen before. If anything, the contrast between almost crashing and ace-level piloting makes her abilities all the more noticeable.

I can’t defend her force abilities, but her piloting abilities being superior to Luke’s can easily be explained. TFA was made in 2015 when anything is possible with CGI. The film-makers didn’t care about making her abilities realistic relative to her circumstances or what has previously been seen in Star Wars. I think they just wanted to make a modern action scene for their modern action movie that modern audiences have come to expect.

They needed an exciting scene with spaceships flying loop-de-loops in the desert that makes me nauseous. So eeny meeny miny moe, let’s have Rey fly the ship.

…making it clear it can not (and never have) stood on its own legs.

This is definitely the most disappointing and concerning thing about this Palpatine reveal. I have my problems with TLJ, but it seemed like at the very least Rian Johnson was trying to move the saga away from the more fan-servicy aspects of Star Wars, the story repetition and over-reliance on plot elements from the previous trilogies.

My immediate reaction to Palpatine coming back is not one of excitement. Rather it feels like the worst kind of deja vu. It feels like we’re going in circles. Didn’t we do this already? It feels reductive and only serves to lessen the importance of this new trilogy and the future of Star Wars. The prospect of going on a fresh, new adventure is now gone because Disney can’t help themselves from serving up that familiar dish that they know most people eat. They had some wonderful ingredients to create something new and interesting. But why take the time and energy to do that when we already know that people like and will eat hot dogs?

What I’m getting is, Rey needs to be jailed in IX for theft. Let’s Make Star Wars Pointlessly Pedantic About Possesions and Inheritance! That’s what the series has always needed. Can’t wait for the climactic court case where Kylo Ren claims ownership of the Falcon.

It is not my intent to be overly literal and logical about it all (it’s just how my thought process works), my initial feeling that Rey didn’t have the right to just take the saber from Luke was just that - a feeling, which contributed to my dislike for the character. It is only in discussing and trying to explain it that I am looking deeper myself and laying out my detailed perspective on why I happen to see it this way, often in response to simplistic replies that seem to brush it aside as nothing of consequence despite it having an impact on the judgement of Rey’s moral fibre (which is why I also tie the matter into her physical abuse of Luke and threatening him with the saber which at this point is not even her’s to use).

Hey Dom…you remember how I made that point a while back how I felt that Rey had no right to take Luke’s lightsaber that he inherited from his father? - I’d completely forgotten that Rey also took the original Jedi texts! So while there are some shades of grey and certain points of view (if you will) that can be debated about the whole saber matter, I think the Jedi texts are pretty much a clear cut 2nd example of Rey’s tendency to just take things that don’t belong to her (ie. stealing). Whatever justifications can be made that do ring true, it doesn’t change the circumstances under which she took things that weren’t hers to take.

Lock her up! Lock her up!

I don’t know exactly how they will portray Ben’s redemption, but I definitely see it happening, and I think Rey will play a part of it. I think it will be romantic love that puts the galaxy back together.

It’s a theory I’ve heard often (even literally my mom said this was her theory after she saw TLJ) and while I don’t have anything against it, personally I’d be surprised if it happens in an explicit “Rey and Ben are a romantic pair and will live happily ever after” way.

I doubt it will happen. Other than that scene where Rey and Kylo touch hands, the rest of the sequel trilogy seems weirdly asexual to me, at least in the traditional sense. Like it’s something that purposely being tiptoed around.

Rose kissing Finn was asexual?

Don’t know how I missed this, but to answer your question two months after the fact:

I suppose the act itself is not technically asexual by its nature, but it felt about as asexual as is possible for an onscreen kiss. There was nothing in the film that built up to that kiss or even hinted at any kind of romance between Rose and Finn. They spent almost the whole movie onscreen together and there was very little chemistry between them.

As for Kylo and Rey, I hope the play up the sexual tension more in episode IX, but I think having them end up together would not be a very satisfying result. The fact is that after The Last Jedi, the relationship between these two characters is probably the most interesting aspect of the story going forward.

Let’s not turn this into the TLJ debate thread?

And I don’t think Palpy qualifies as a big dumb bad guy. He engineered a decades long plot to put himself into power and played both sides against each other to do it. Sure, it was almost Rube Goldberg in excecution, but you can’t deny the twisted old fart had a plan.

Yeah, I should qualify by saying he’s no dummy in the prequels, but retconning him and the entire story of the ST to make him the big bad guy pulling the strings may be the dumbest idea that I can think of. It’s fan service and it appeals to the lowest common denominator of moviegoers who need a big bad guy and would prefer it if it’s someone they already know, so they don’t have to think.

I’m not just trying to be cute, but I think bringing back Palpatine shows a tremendous lack of vision.

Is the Lucasfilm story team so unconfident in these new movies that they need to drudge up an already established villain? For that matter why does every big budget movie need a big, dumb bad guy? Do they think audiences are too stupid to enjoy a movie without one?

I don’t think so. I believe that The Last Jedi is a very important entry to the series in story. In terms of making an impact on the franchise, I would say that it’s the second most important Star Wars film.

Guess who’s back!

Since they’re apparently going to visit the wreck of the DS2, I’m guessing Palpatine might appear as either a Force Ghost, or more likely, as some kind of Force Vision. Might be similar to the Thrawn trilogy where the death of the Emperor left behind an imprint in the Force.

Or Lucasfilm could just be messing with us in the trailer. Wouldn’t technically be the first time.

Both Death Stars blew up. There was concept art for The Force Awakens of the second Death Star underwater, but they scrapped it. It seems like they could potentially be returning to those ideas, but it also seems a bit odd because the Death Star blew up in space.

Well, it blew up orbiting Endor. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility that fragments fell to the moon’s surface. Which would also suggest that the forest setting that was shown in a couple of the promo photos might indeed be the forests of Endor.

There is no way that the planet the station is on is Endor. It looks like a different planet.

Possible, but the Death Star remains being anywhere else would make no sense at all. Then again J.J. Abrams has demonstrated time and again that he doesn’t know (or maybe just doesn’t care) how outer space works.

I trust Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, Rian Johnson and the others at Lucasfilm in what they’re doing. Whatever happens with the Death Star’s destruction and Palpatine’s return, I’ll describe what I think when I see the movie. I won’t judge based on the trailer alone.

Okay, I’m not judging. Just saying that Endor makes the most logical sense. You’re the one who insisted that “there is no way” that planet is Endor.
