I got the impression in TFA that Leia had been shut out of the political process somewhere in those three decades. (I think someone said the novelization suggested the information about her true father was used against her?) Would that also cause the New Republic leadership to distance itself from Luke and the attempt to bring back the Jedi?
That could also factor in Luke’s decisions.

Bloodline is that story.

Also, sorry guys, RLM sucks.

RLM is amazing. Hands down my favorite youtube channel and I ain’t being sarcastic. They also have great analysis. There are some wonderful half in the bag episodes of breaking down movies.

This. They’re also very funny and don’t take themselves too seriously. But if you’re a Star Wars fan who can’t laugh at yourself, they’re probably not for you.

Hello KK650.
I really love your regrades (though you’re making mostly contemporary films that don’t interest me).
I’m not sure if the King and I (which has a blanket blue tint) is something that would interest you. But thought to bring it to your attention.

Thanks titanic, I appreciate that.

Can I ask where the second screencaps you’ve posted for The King and I come from? They are close to how I would regrade this release myself.

I second titanic’s sentiment for The King and I, which is much more troublesome than The Sound of Music. Would love to see a regrade.

Lando Calrissian with a twist:

Lol.

Dre post with a (giant) stretch.

This is not Lando by any means. At least Han knew who Lando was, and Lando was to some degree trying to play it straight.

This guy, by contrast, is a nobody. No one knows who he is or what his deal is beyond a possible use which they might have for keeping him around.

We have another shady supporting character character betraying the heroes at the end of the middle chapter of the trilogy. He’s Lando with a twist. The twist being, he doesn’t come back to help them.

But Lando isn’t shady by any means when we meet him in Empire. He’s an upstanding citizen and a successful businessman. The only similarity between Lando and Benny del Toro (literally don’t know the character’s name) is that they both betray our protagonists.

HAN
Yeah, a Tibanna gas mine. Lando conned somebody out of it. We go back a long way, Lando and me.

LEIA
Can you trust him?

HAN
No. But he has no love for the Empire, I can tell you that.

Con man + untrustworthy = shady character

Eh okay. I still think you’re picking nits, but I guess this is the forum for it 😉

For me TLJ has much bigger issues than the small similarities it has to the OT.

Well, how else would a ground assault look like? Walkers have been established as an effective force, if they came up with somehting new, people would ask “where are the walkers?”. Also, trenches are a very common defense against ground attacks and if there wasn’t a rebel base, what else would be the target of a ground attack? And the planet is nothing like Hoth.

Why have a ground assault at all? Why have another ground assault in the middle chapter of a trilogy? Why have one that evokes the battle of Hoth? Been there, done that. The planet is white. It’s Hoth visually with a twist.

I also must have missed the scene in Empire, where the Empire blasts a huge door away, or the TIE fighters joinging the ground attack or where Han flies directly at the enemy force to sacrifize himself, or Luke facing Vader to buy his friends some time.

That’s the twist. It’s the hallmark of the ST. Rehash something from the OT, and refurbish it just enough that it can pass off as new.

ROTJ throne room sequence with a twist:

Imperial guards with a twist:

Lando Calrissian with a twist:

Sorry Dre. Can’t really agree with you on this one. Films use visuals from other films as their inspiration all the time. If you work hard enough at it, you can call “rehash!” in most films.

Also, by your logic wouldn’t Lando Calrissian be a Han Solo rehash with a twist?

I think that, plain and simple, what many people wanted TLJ to have been was unattainable. I think no matter what LFL/Disney/RJ/JJ did people would complain. That doesn’t mean complaints aren’t valid. It means they’re damned if they do and they’re damned if they don’t.

Couldn’t disagree more strongly. The overall tone, pacing, characters, and setup from TFA were great. Keep doing that for 3 Star Wars movies and everyone loves them.

Yes. Tone and pacing are two of the biggest problems with The Last Jedi. Small details are irrelevant. The movie fails from the perspective of basic story structure.

at which point he suddenly becomes a retard.

Oh fuck off already.

Before I just disagreed with your opinion on a film. Now I think you’re an asshole too.

How do you keep avoiding moderator warnings with all fights you start

Go ask them, but maybe it’s partly because I don’t use “retard” as an insult?

I have to admit, that’s a pretty weak defense.

“Retard” as an insult is offensive, but “asshole” is not. Telling people to “fuck off” is not, as being belligerent is also not.
Umm… okay.

Your objection is noted.

Using “retard” as an insult makes you an asshole. Sorry.

I see. Calling someone dumb is also insulting. If I call Snoke a dumb character would that also be passing those high and mightly standards of yours? How about Snoke is ugly? Is that an insult, which makes me an asshole, or simply the truth?

I think insulting a fictional character is not really on the same level of dickery as insulting real people, but hey that’s me. Anyways, I will avoid the r-word with regards to fictional characters from now on, as it seems to be inflammatory to some.

Frink loves being outraged. Best to just ignore him.

TLJ is different to me not because of its plot choices but thematically. Its substance, outside of the superficial tropes and rearranged story beats, is incongruous with the rest of the franchise.

There are a bunch of core themes about good and evil, heroism, and redemption, that were essentially the heart guiding the past two trilogies. TLJ goes around to challenge those, and comments on the meta-narrative of the old stories rather than try to continue them.

It’s not different because of what happens in it. I mean, to an extent it makes unexpected choices, but it still borrows plot elements.

What makes it new is how it’s not beholden to what came before and isn’t particularly interested in setting up what comes after. It’s entirely character/theme driven, and the things it explores isn’t even trying to be classic SW.

Thank you.

This is one of the more intelligent and insightful posts on what makes TLJ different. So naturally it’s been ignored.

Looks like there actually was an agenda in all this ST.

Sadly fairy tales all root in the old world.

Please fire Kennedy

Please fire yourself (from being a poster in this thread).

Someone’s getting a little defensive.

I reckon he’s allowed to be concerned about modern day politics infiltrating Star Wars.

Right, how dare they give women equal footing.

Not really the point. Women have always been the smart ones in command in Star Wars.

Point is, telling someone to go away because you disagree with them is not a valid argument.

There are exactly 4 women with speaking roles in the OT. Three of them have less than a minute of screen time.

He said to fire Kennedy because she has an agenda. I don’t see why I should have to make a valid argument when he isn’t either. Calling for her to be fired is just as inflaming, if not more so.

That would be true, except that Kathleen Kennedy is not on this thread.

Also it seems to me that you just posited a valid argument, which you could have done the first time.

Good lord was this ever better the second time around. 100% on board. Fight me, jerks.

I’m hoping that’ll be my experience too. I’m still conflicted.

The Luke/Rey/Kylo story was fantastic. Poe and Laura Dern grappling for command, less so (though I did enjoy Princess Leia). The Finn and Rose story I found uninteresting. It felt like something from a completely different movie.

And I can’t tell you how much I loved the scene with Yoda!

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

I know this is impossible, but I’ve always loved that deleted sandstorm scene after they blow up Jabbas barge. Luke and Han have a very tender and heartfelt parting.

I would have loved to see this scene included in a ROTJ with a slightly darker tone. I’m sure Lucas cut it because it didn’t fit with his happy-go-lucky vision for Jedi.
