Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

Is it John Williams who made the arrangements for the music of this trailer?
I know that the score of TLD is composed by him, but what about this trailer ?

I feel that it sounds like a cross between GoT and Battlestar Galactica, with arrangements quite unrelated to what John Williams does habitually. Here, I hear lot of rhythmic violins on a ryhtmic in 3 times quite classical, imposing percussions (drums, bass drums, timpani and cymbals on almost every bounce), quite simple theme played with the brass without any dissonance or change of tone in an heretical way, as he usually does …

I don’t dislike it, but I find that it is very unusual in the work of John Williams.

I’m going to guess the incredibly overbearing and obnoxious percussion is just the trailer arrangement. Almost every trailer now is like that. The music needs to be loud otherwise teenagers won’t pay any attention -_-

Around 10-15 mins could well be just the end credits 😉

True! I always forget that. That makes me feel a little better.

I hope there’ll be a few space battles - though not for the sake of just having them because it is a Star Wars movie - but because it is important to the story, and will have an emotional resonance for whatever it’ll be they are fighting for - to actually be drawn into it.

That’s what Star Wars is all about, Charlie Brown 😉

The Last Jedi will have a run time of 2 hours and 35 mins.

Eesh! Let’s hope it warrants that run time. My biggest fear is that this movie is going to be stuffed with unnecessary space battles.

I liked Star Wars VII a lot, but it really tested my tolerance for battle scenes.

Ah, yes! From a business standpoint, I want to drop 4 billion on a franchise so I can make movies that are very remotely related and will alienate multiple elements from a fanbase and ensure my investment does not pay off. Sounds like a great idea!

From a fan standpoint, I want to watch a series of movies that supposedly take place in the same universe as another series of movies, but without any references, nods, characters, or elements from the previously established series. That’s the sort of thing that helps me connect it to the films I already love! Sounds like a great idea!

Of course I understand that from a business perspective it makes total sense to keep drawing from the same well. This is a safe bet and an Obi Wan movie will make a billion dollars easily.

To your second point: I’m a Star Wars fan, but I want the exact idea that you’re mocking and I can’t possibly be the only one. I want a Star Wars movie without references or nods or recurring characters. Give me a fresh take on Star Wars, or at least a fresh take on a familiar character. Perhaps that’s what this movie will be, but something makes me doubt that.

Disney has an entire galaxy to flesh out and play with, but somehow we always end up back on Tatooine with the same cast of characters. And if I want to connect to the old Star Wars films that I already love, I’ll re-watch the old Star Wars films that I already love.

JEDIT: I loved Star Wars VII by the way. I’m not quite as cynical and joyless as Impscum or Alderaan 😉

I’m sorry, I’m just all sorts of bothered by this. I’m probably wrong and it’s just a title and it’s all going to be good, but this already seems more on the nose than TFA and I loved that film. Sorry bout all this

Star Wars titles past have usually been on-the-nose, as you say:

The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith

A New Hope and The Phantom Menace are more ambiguous I guess.

Star Wars moving forward without Ms. Fisher

no i stand by my idea because she looks exactly like her with make up now a days they could make it work i rather episode ix finish her story the way it was intended then have episode ix feel ruined. i want leia to confront her son having her die would just suck. sorry but it would it’s bad enough han’s dead but killing her character off would be as soul crushing as carrie fisher passing away.

I think that makes very little sense. If they recast Princess Leia, they should do it with someone of appropriate age and acting ability. Taking on the role of Princess Leia requires more than kind of looking like Carrie Fisher.

Anyway, this is all moot because they’re definitely going to kill off Leia. Which I agree is unfortunate as I would have liked to see what the writers had in store for her.
