They can't be from the GOUT, because the GOUT never came out here. I would have offered you Czech subs myself but I don't have any that I trust to be correct.

Oh, I see. But maybe it was released in some neighbor country where they included subs in Czech?

Anyway, to everyone who wants to contribute: Make sure the subs are good, and preferably ripped from the GOUT discs. Usually, the subs found on subscene and such sites are fanmade, full of typos and errors, and are most likely translated from the SE DVDs.

Actually I ripped the CZ subs from the SE DVD, removed the special edition-added lines, and synchronized the new track with English subtitles ripped from the GOUT. I have also done Slovak subtitles but only for Greedo's lines - I was lazy :-)

Probably, yes. When it comes to encoding this, I'm gonna need some advice by some more knowledgeable members here to make sure everything is as it should be to be compatible.

My recommendation is that for the MKV, break compatibility for the sake of quality and compression efficiency. That is, except for software encoders. Go for 16 refs, 16 bframes, any other specialized non-compatible good setting x264 has, etc. This will break the decoding compatibility for pretty much everything except software encoders on a PC, but it will improve the quality and bitrate efficiency by a significant amount. I also recommend ditching the 2pass bitrate for the more advanced CRF setting, which produces unpredictable filesizes because it analyses the video and gives it the bitrate it needs for the specified value.

If people need hardware compatibility (DXVA etc) then they can get the AVCHD and play it on their PC, no? :)

Anyways, I know my way around x264 pretty well so I can probably help with any compression questions you may have. I also recommend ditching any encoding GUI and going for frequently updated commandline builds which in addition to being more frequently updated also give you full control of what settings to mess with and tune. I use JEEB's custom build @ x264.fushizen.eu

Also, since you're going to be using MKV, you could include fun stuff like soft subtitles of the original English version for multiple languages, multiple language tracks in a more effective compressed format like OGG or AAC (=good quality+not much space taken up), and a lossless FLAC encoded audio file of the 2.0 Laserdisc mix that's used as the basis for the 70mm recreations. I also think you should softsub the Greedo subtitles unless you're making them look very specific. But even then, .ass/ssa subs (+Aegisub editor) have a lot of features and allow you to use various fonts and move the subtitles around the frame on a per-line basis, etc. I do anime stuff so that's why I know a lot about encoding, subs, and containers. :D

Unrelated question but for the 2.0, are you still using recompressed sources (HDTV/BD rips etc) or untouched sources (BDMVs, HDTV transport streams, and such) ? I haven't been keeping up with 2.0 much unfortunately. :(

Please NO. I would make the mkv as compatible as possible, and the subs should definitely be a part of the movie, not a special subtitle stream

Whose arm?

You forget that films are not only shot out of sequence but as in S.W. the live action was shot in the U.K. and the effects and many of the inserts were shot in L.A.. The cantina was shot in the U.K. and the characters in the black and white photo are in England. The color photo of Jim Nelson ( BUCK KNIFE NELSON) with the knife was just after I set up the shot with the head. At the time I did not see the footage that comes before the severed arm, just some production stills of walrus man and the guy with the bad complexion from the waist up, and no hands. Thing happen real fast on films , and you are on to something else. Imagine the cost of having the bad complexion guy get on his makeup months later and molding his arm and head and then sending it to L.A.. S.W. took 10.5 mil. to make not 100 mil.. I was just sent the box with the arm and hand and be ready for G. Kurtz to show up. All the parts were already in L.A.. By the way many of the inserts for the cantina were shot in L.A. . All the close ups, the band, and Han in the corner table. That hand was already in L.A. at Rick Baker's. It shows up I think on what we called the wolfman. The Kurosawa connection is right on.

I never saw the flipper you mention except a week ago on this site.

My real first name is Lorne. I thought I was being clever.

Welcome on board, sir ! I just want to tell you that I LOVE your book (Sculpting a galaxy)

Well, I'm still not 100% decided on the BD. I'll only release it if I can make a really cool BD with menus and stuff. But there will definitely be an MKV which should be comparable in quality to a BD25.

MKV will be excellent for all of us who watch all their movies from external discs connected to their HDTVs :-)

Just don't forget to add the czech dub to it too :-)
