Sci-fi Channel's Star Trek Special edition (a WIP)
Time

From wikipedia :

From September 1 to December 24, 1998, the Sci-Fi Channel broadcast a “Special Edition” of all The Original Series episodes in an expanded 90-minute format hosted by William Shatner. Approximately 3–4 minutes of each episode that had been edited out of the syndicated shows for additional commercial time were restored for the “Special Edition” broadcast. In addition to introductory and post-episode commentary by Shatner, the episodes included interviews with members of the regular production team and cast, writers, guest stars, and critics (titled as “Star Trek Insights”). The episodes were broadcast in the original broadcast sequence, followed by “The Cage” (in a 105-minute segment). (for details on each episode’s original airdate, see List of Star Trek: The Original Series episodes). Leonard Nimoy hosted a second run from December 28, 1998 to March 24, 1999, but not all the episodes were broadcast because the show was abruptly cancelled before completion.

Did anybody from this forum record these “special edition” episodes ? I managed to found some of them on youtube, e.g. on this guy’s channel : http://www.youtube.com/user/potablog but all of the segments are

  1. incomplete

  2. very, VERY low quality

  3. watermarked

Is there any chance that somebody of you have recorded the episodes when they were broadcast ? I don’t care about the episodes themselves, the same versions were released on the DVDs which I own, I’m just interested in the documentary segments

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Thanks so much ANALOG for the link! I have had experience in remixing MKV and actually tried it with only the 1.0 and 5.1 included and for whatever reason the mp4 wouldn't play. When I used MP4Tools it said the file had 'overhead compression' ( whatever that means) then it supposedly did a run through to resolve that and then I hit convert. However after that process the file would not play. It's certainly appears to be a complex file but totally worth the trouble so thanks again for the link! JIM

Header compression is unfortunately STILL a big problem for many "hardware players", even when it exists for some 10 years or so already. Get mkvtoolnix, there is also a mac version available (google it). Then do this : http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=151425

I'm sure this has probably been asked before but which Star Wars dvd's would I need to own to download the 1.0 despecialized editions? I already have the 2004 dvds.

It doesn't matter, as owning any DVDs doesn't make it legal in any way.

What the heck are you talking about, Laserschwert?

Are you telling her that downloading any fanedits whatsoever is illegal, no matter what form of media one owns a copy of the original work on?

Not only is this not true (it's profiting from the fanedits that is illegal), but you might as well have told her to stick it and to go away.

There are 2 different approaches - legality and forum rules.

Legality - every country has its own laws. For example in my country I could DOWNLOAD it but not UPLOAD it (meaning no legal movie torrents for me). But in many countries even the downloading would be illegal.

That's why we have the forum rules - to have the same rules without caring about which country you come from.

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)

Just wanted to tell you guys that we're closing in on releasing the first part which is of course Star Wars! (I won't ever call it Episode IV... haha)

DJ and I managed to solve the render problems. It seems avisynth has a limit for how many clips can be combined in one script, and we had many since there were lots of fixed frames to put back into the render.

Now all that is left is for me to make the final decision on the colors, the menu guy to finish our menus and then it won't be long until you have both SW theatrical and 97 SE.

This will be a day loong remembered...

Burn that Lowry "master". Burn it and send it to hell.

Yea they mess up a classic. With color errors, crushed blacks, boosted Contrast. It's just a Cyan/yellow mess. :(

Actually the colour "correction" was done in LFL if I remember correctly. There was some interview with the Lowry team around the DVD release where they claimed that they started with colour "corrected" digital files.

Or is my memory complete crap ?

48 fps!

Thanks for the clarification, SilverWook. I guess I was mostly just confused by the fact that there seems to be such a big discrepancy in the look of video in the 60s and 70s and the look of digital video today. So what, exactly, is it that causes the "soap opera" effect?

A combination of low resolution of analogue video, no film grain, and the frame rate

I was editing video tape in college in the late 80's, early 90's, and it was always 30 fps.

Not really what I meant. Broadcast video tapes. I'm not an expert so I don't know if I'm explaining it right.

Ever watch those Twilight Zone marathons and catch one of the few episodes that looks different, like a soap? Those were shot on tape instead of film to save money.

Edit: I hate to sound stupid, but I'm not even sure what I'm talking about anymore. I was sure I read somewhere that soap operas and othe broadcast stuff was shot at 60, but, honestly, I'm not sure. The Internet is not very informative in this area.

Were soap operas really shot at 30fps? They don't look like it.

Maybe finally seeing the Hobbit at 48 would clear things up.

Film speed = 24 fps

PAL video speed = 25 fps = 50 FIELDS per second (1 frame consists of 2 fields)

NTSC video speed = 30 fps = 60 FIELDS per second

Rick McCallum Exits Lucasfilm!
Time

I'm quite shocked by one thing - he wants to do a movie about the Masin brothers. About thieves and mass murderers. And from the description it sounds like he considers them to be heroes :-(

Zombie - yes, you're the only one. Roddenberry's death was a huge tragedy for the franchise. TOS seasons 1-2 - while he was actively involved - were brilliant. Season 3 - Roddenberry left - sucked. TNG season 1-4 - when Roddenberry was heavily involved in it - were great (even when there were many weak episodes). Season 5 - where Roddenberry wasn't involved at all because of his health status, and later his death - and Season 6 were much weaker, but still good, Season 7 was boring (only the finale was brilliant).

Berman's series were anything from boring (DS9 before the Dominion war), through piece of shit (Voyager). The only seasons which I liked from his series were DS9 after the Dominion war started, and the first season of Enterprise.

Did not read the whole Thread bu you are aware of the fact that there

is a German DVB Broadcast in 1080P in x264 Format out?

Quality is much better than on the GKar Set.

You should read the whole thread....it's a very cool project.

Anyways, the x264 format, this is a compressed format like DiVX or xVid?

Yes, x264 is lossy compression
